Updating Baseband from EG22 without Odin? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was running ACS SFR 1.2 for the longest time (about a year I think), and yesterday finally decided to update to CM9. I didn't realize it wouldn't update my baseband at the same time (previous roms always did).
I do have CWM 5.0.2.7 installed, and also have successfully used the multiboot FC09 to update my profile and PRL, however, I realized my baseband in CM9 is still EG22.
Is there a way to update the baseband without having to use Odin and losing my CM9 setup? I guess it's not a huge deal to re-set up everything... but I'm a little pissed that Mybackup root wouldn't let me restore my stuff from the backup I made before updating.... so I had to re-install everything from scratch.
I did see a reference to uprgrade.zip, usable from CWM9, but it seems like you had to be on EL30 or something 1st (diff patch?).

Why not just odin the modem (not a full tar, just the modem itself)? It won't touch the rest of your setup.

Yes use odin to flash just the modem you won't touch your rom setup. Search youtube for qbking77 and find his how to video on updating modems. Takes maybe 4 min.

Ok, I was just confused because everything said I'd have to repartition if I used Odin.
Just leary because the last time I Odin'd I damn near bricked my phone...
Anyway... grabbed the FC09 modem.bin, Odin 1.85, Samsung drivers, installed everything on my work PC...
Powered down phone, plugged in... let windows auto update the drivers for the ports ... Booted into download mode (1 + power). Once the com port showed up, I put the modem.bin in the phone slot of Odin ... hit start ... about a minute later... phone rebooted and I now have FC09
Thanks!

Only very few ROMs that did a very specific check could update modems. This was done by using the delta modem provided in the update zip. So you HAD to be on EB13 modem to have the ROM update you to EC05 and that was the only situation supported. There is no way to flash a full modem.bin on the Epic without Heimdall or Odin. There are flashable deltas from EI22 to EL30 and another from EL30 to FC09 but you will need to flash them with the BML CWM temp boot from sd card.

To OP: Below is a download link for all modems from EC05 to FC09, including deltas. Each phone performs differently depending on modem version, so try them out and see which one works best for you.

EK02 OTA Update failing..

Hey guys,
So I am on EG30 modem (stock), and I only installed crawlcj's odexed stock rooted ROM.
I got the OTA update notification today morning and I just pressed update and walked away for like 30 minutes, and when I came back there was a yellow triangle with the android figure on the screen and it seemed to be stuck.
So I just held down the power button to turn the phone back on and it seems that the phone is still working fine under EG30 but EK02 was nowhere to be found.
I'd like to get the EK02, do you know why it failed and what I need to do to get the OTA to install correctly?
Thanks in advance
it failed because you are rooted and dont have stock recovery anymore. so if you want to upgrade to EK02 you should just flash the update that is posted already for rooted phones its fast and easy to do.this is the link to get you right to the new modem. after you flash the modem upgrade just chose a rom that has also be upgraded too. now you have the new update its just that easy

I'm going to jump onto this thread to because I'm having the same issue (and have searched this high and low for a solution). I have Crawrj's Stock EG30 Deodexed with Root 3.0/Busybox 1.18.4 on my phone. All I would like to do is to upgrade to EK02 and 2.3.6 (which I'm not sure if it's one and the same), remain stock but retain root. I don't have an SD card in my phone and I don't have clockworkmod (@ewalk4366 the video in your link assumes the upgrader has CWM). Since the OTA failed, I'm at a loss of how to proceed next. It seems I'm missing one thing or another when it comes to trying to upgrade. Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. Sorry for some noob butter but I still don't have all the terminology down correctly, so there may be times where I say modem but I mean rom and visa versa. For the sake of this thread, I think I'm saying what I mean.
just install the new EL13 modem using odin... i hope you are rooted

Thanks for your response but don't I still have the stock recovery? Crawlrj's odexed busybox rooted 3.0 rom didn't have any other recovery mods..
And I'd like to have the completely stock version of the EG30 ROM and the Modem.. So I should flash both? Wouldn't that erase my memory?
Skoksn,
I was using this thread and a few others to solve my problem which I think was similar to yours

[Q] MTD and Modem flashing

In order to flash the EH17 modem from Cyanogen with the EI22 modem can I just flash EH17 through ODIN, or do I need to return to a stock build, update the modem to EH17, then return to Cyanogen?
Background:
I was on EH17 on BML Cyanogen. I flashed EC05 through ODIN, then ran the EC05 -> EI22 delta through Clockwork. After getting EI22 I went to the MTD version of Cyanogen, and currently have a build with WiMAX installed. My battery life has dropped by 4-6 hours since making these changes, and in my office (a very low service area) I've been having a lot more service issues. My instincts tell me to just update the modem because it's probably exists outside of the BML/MTD world, but I do like my phone working.
Thanks for the help!

Yep just odin it in... odin still works on cm7 no need to downgrade unless trying to get to ei22 because you can't flash the ei22 delta with cwm on cm7mtd...

Questions about Heimdall

Okay, I have a new EI22 Epic 4G and a Macbook on 10.6. I have downloaded Heimdall and have watched like 8 youtube videos and read several guides. I have rooted something like 10 phones, so I'm not terribly dumb, but I can't find one place with the info that I need.
All I want is Clockwork Mod Recovery to install on the phone. After that I can handle myself. Here is what I've done/tried:
1. Found this thread
2. Downloaded the CWM file
3. Put my phone in download mode
4. Booted up Heimdall and loaded the CWM file.
5. When I started the flash it told me that my device was not supported.
Am I doing things correctly? Is there a workaround for the "Device not supported" error? Also I read something about another thing I have to do to make sure that CWM sticks. When do I do this?
Did you run the drivers application and your mac has successfully recognised your epic? Did you download the epic 4g mobile drivers for mac?
Also if you plan on rooting ei22 its probably best to accept the ota to el30 since its the newest but if you don't get one then you can heimdall in the el30 stock package by toadlife..

* replace everything that says "odin" with heimdall
If you plan on rooting you'll need the GB3.tar kernel I'll link everything at the end.
1. Obtain the kernel and the el30.tar package provided by toadlife don't forget to thank him
2. Odin in the el30 package, and then odin in the gb3.tar kernel.
3. Odin in your choice of recovery cwm5.0.2.7 is a wise choice.
4. Enjoy your rooted EL30.

no, you won't have to re-odin, there is a tar file for el30 by toadlife

[Q] Different Modem for CM9 A2

Hey guys!
This is my first post on XDA, though I've been creeping on these forums for years rooting my Orginal Gangster G1 and my Epic 4g. I recently just got the E4GT and I love it.
Obviously the first thing I did after charging it up was start getting it rooted and etc. So started on stock EL29, and with using all of QBking77's great videos, I rooted it with One-Click Root, got recovery on it, then did the whole process of getting CM9 Alpha 2 on my phone. Everything went perfectly and its running smoothly!
But now the question is how can I change my modem? I'm assuming EL29 is from Gingerbread and the F*xx's are ICS (if not just the latest F's?). But regardless of what they there, is it possible to change my modem WITHOUT going back to stock with the One Click root/restore, and then flashing a new modem, and then going through the whole process of installing CM9 again?
If there isn't, could someone please tell me what the most effective and safe way is to change my modem on CM9 is? And what is the general consensus on which modem is the best running with CM9. FC24, FD05, etc?
Thanks for the help in advance! It feels good to finally post!
If you really wanted to you could start fresh and install the modem along with CM9 again.
But most people will tell you to ODIN an EL26+CWM kernel and boot to recovery when it reboots, flash the modem, and then flash the kernel that comes with CM9. Its an easy process.
If I'm wrong, someone feel free to correct me
EDIT: Modems really are hit and miss for me. I suggest just taking a couple days and testing them out to see which one works best for you.
Just to make sure I have this right:
1. Odin the EL26+CWM kernal, just like I did to flash CM9.
2. Boot in to recovery, after Odin is finished.
3. Flash the modem through recovery. From http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352310
4. Then flash the CM9 kernel.
5. And we are good to go?
Question is by flashing the CM9 Kernel do you just mean flashing the Rom zip (cm-update-9 blah blah), or is there a separate kernel file.
That's all correct except for the fact that there should be a separate kernel that you can flash for CM9. I'm not sure about all that so you might want to ask around about that. Just make sure you don't flash a TouchWiz kernel, as CM9 requires an AOSP one.
EDIT: Just looked at the link and make sure that the modem you flash is in CWM .zip format. You don't use tars in CWM.
You can also get mobile Odin from the play store and flash a modem (.tar file, can be found on Calk's ICS 1.4 thread) through that.

That's the method I use. Most people don't want to pay for the app. 100% worth it though.
Another easy method
A free method is to download Odin to your PC, put the .tar file into the Phone slot, hook up your phone in download mode and flash it from there, easy as pie.
Edit: Don't forget to leave only automatic reboot checked in Odin.

This.
Its late here and I wasn't thinking straight. My method had so many extra steps it wasn't funny. I can officially say my badddd.
The extra steps are worth the experience

So I can just flash the modem through odin? Awesome. Do they have the .tar's for all the modems? Or just some of them? And what's the risk of flashing it from Odin compared to method of doing a completely clean install with a different modem?

Clearing up a couple things:
1) Last I checked you cannot flash modems from Mobile ODIN on this phone. I am sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, such as Epix4G...
2) Calk's ROM threads usually contain a list of all modem TAR files so that they can be upgraded.
3) Modems need to be flashed through ODIN as far as I understood. But whether or not you should revert to EL26 before flashing? I can give the CW advice of going back to EL26 (better safe than sorry IMO), but hopefully a person experienced with CM9 can give you better advice on this.
I'm running CM9 A2, and I've been keeping up with the latest modems using Odin. The beauty of it is that it is almost completely risk-free, no need to revert to EL26. Calks E4GT ICS thread has all the modem .tar files in the OP, flash away.
No offense meant, but we are talking about modems, not kernels, right?
