Jellybean batt life observation - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Seems jb batt life is pretty bad. 2%/hr idle. Alot of wake locks also from maps and networklocator. :Im assuming all from google now?

Noticed that over the last 24 hours battery life was worse than usual while I was on jellybean. Think you are probably right that Google now is the culprit, I really hope that it gets better before the ota but at the moment it just doesn't seem like it will be worth "upgrading".

Well, it must be Google Now. I turned it off and my battery is relatively the same as it was before. When using background location update, you can expect it to drain battery a little. Google Now uses your location data quite a bit.

I left my phobe at 96% came back 4 hours later and still on 96

I thought JB was pretty good on the battery from my experiences. Did my overnight sleep test and it drained 3% in 8 hours just like ICS did.
As for screen on time, I feel that it's even better than before.

I would be getting 4 hours screen on time if the battery drained to 0.
I'm very satisfied.

I'm getting pretty good batterylife with JB. Over 10 hours on battery and over 3 hours of screentime and I still got 40% left with 2000mah oem battery.

I have yet to flash JB, but one thing concerns me. Is this not just a dev preview and not the final product that will be pushed out mid-July? Not to sound harsh, but I don't see why complaints are being made about battery life at this stage of JB. Just my 2 cents, fyi...

My battery life is no different.
You also have to remember this is a developers preview build and not the official release.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

My battery life over the ~12 hours i had jelly installed seemed the same. Good standvy times also. I think it will depend on how much of the new stuff google added you use that will determine battery life. Some of that stuff will make a big impact.

Even though its just a Dev preview and to early to comment on this, I think its about the same on ICS if not better.

If you are getting bad battery life and wake issues, check your apps. I've heard LightFlow was causing wakelocks b/c it isn't optimzied for JB yet. I've deleted it until they can get it updated. So far, my battery life hasn't been great b/c I can't keep my hands off of it

Yeah, I would agree that battery life seems pretty good. It seems a little worse on Franco.kernel than stock, but hey, it's a new kernel and he is still trying to get all the kinks worked out. Also, no wakelocks on Light Flow, but I hope they update it soon, lots of my notifications stopped working.

Ehh I don't think its terrible at 2% an hour. Better than 10% an hour. I'll take a little drain for the beauty of JB
Sent from my JellyBelly Gnex

IMO I think it's draining a little fast, but I think that's because I keep flashing kernels and add-ons which reboots and causes the battery to drain super fast... and I've been messing with apps a lot too. So I'm gonna give it another day or two for a definitive answer.

I don't understand what people expect??? They want to have an awesome huge screen, fast processor, 4G speeds, want to run apps like crazy and then have Google Now constantly updating and expect the battery to last all day?? People just need to be realistic!

I'm completely stock and my battery is almost the same. Think it's a bit early to tell yet, we've all been playing more with the new rom
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I am under the impression that the drain is slightly higher than on ICS, I am now 5,5 hours after charging, with 88% left (and a screen time of 18mins). On ICS I would be around 90 to 93% (with the 2000mAh battery). But nothing really to worry about.
Having said that, I did have lightflow installed and it did show in the wakelock screen, so I uninstalled that to see if the next charge gives me even better endurance.

3-5%/hr on an Android, even in standby, is great. That means you're getting somewhere between 20 and 33 hours of standby. That's far better than any Android phone I had in the past.

IMO the thing we should be concerned with getting down is battery drain while screen is on. I'm completely stock and if I hardly touch the phone (10 minutes of screen on) I can have 85% battery after 12-14 hours on 3g with Bluetooth on (no wifi and I'm on att). But if I calculate my screen on time it's about 3 hours before the phone is getting close to dying, which is pathetic. If we could use some magic kernel or something to get 6 hours of screen time, then I think that's something to be happy about. But unfortunately I don't think that's possible without a giant 3200 mah battery which Samsung probably won't ever release.

Yeah my battery drains super fast when only on 3g. Nothing else running. When i try to actually use it like my last phone the thing drains like crazy. Tried both cm and stock. And diff kernels. I let my battery die and charge it fully over 5 times already. Another thing I noticed. I went to bed with 93% I wake up 8 hrs later. And its drained half way. Mind u its not even being used. I'm confused. the GSM g nex I used to have before used to last over 24 hours for me all the time no problem. If its the same phone. Why are the results so different. Its a huge difference. I find myself having to turn my phone off for a couple hours just so it can last thru my work day without dying on me.
Can it be the 3g that's making it drain so fast? What makes me believe this is when I am on 3g the top part of the back of the phone gets extremely hot. But when I'm on wifi. Its cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Which kernels besides franco give good battery life?
If you're getting 1.5 hours battery life then you're NOT using your phone, period. This is a smart phone, if you can manager more than 1 hour then you probably should have kept your StarTAC.

If you are on 3g/4g and a verizon nexus on stock battery...2 hrs screen time is normal. Get used to it. Sorry. My wife's on stock 4.0.2 does exactly that. Pathetic. We bought an extended battery. Still might get in the 4 hour range. I love the nexus but damn the battery is terrible. I get 6-7 hrs screen on time on my maxx using 3g/4g. Today she got close to 4 hrs but it was a 4g/Wi-Fi mix.
Verizon nexus on 3g gets around 2 hrs screen on time if you actually are using data and keeping everything synced like a smartphone should be able to do.

[Q] JB Battery performance

Hi!
Just wondering if someone has tested the battery performance for JB compared to stock ICS 4.0.4.
Less than 24 hours is not long enough for any definitive tests.
Too soon too compare... :screwy:

Now seriously, jb is so recent...

if you connect phone to mobile version of nuclear reactor... you will never have to charge it again... EVER!!!!!!!!
and for the this first day of use... playing with phone every day (I have my nexus one week old now, so Ive got new battery), Im on 37 percent left now, but its a really very very early to compare
My phone is down to 47% with 4 hours in, and an hour and twelve minutes on screen..but it is my first charge, And stock kernel.

So far 10.5 hours and 1:45 screen time I'm at 48%.
Pretty much the same as ICS for me.
JB has been brutal on my battery life so far.

I wonder if that is due to the new governor that instantly ramps the CPU to max speeds when a touch event is sensed or expected.
With bixie's ROM and the stock kernel, I'm estimated to get 4 hours screen on time which is excellent. Pretty much the same I've gotten with ICS.

Maybe it's just because your screen is on more since you're still "exploring/fiddling"
It's actually much better for me than ICS - already 4 hours of screen time (68%) and I'm still left with 35% battery.
This is quite impressive to me because I could barely make it to 4 hours on stock 4.04.

Well, I'd believe that if the "normal ICS" dips was off-screen usage, but they are the same apps I used before and after.
I'll wait a few days, since JB is likely doing some background processing for its new features, but I can say the device was running hot since installing it.
Well I got an app to measure CPU usage and jb certainly does ramp up the CPU to 100% when simply dragging your finger across the screen.
I wonder how Google offset the battery loss caused by this. I'd certainly take ICS smoothness ( which wasn't bad) for longer battery life.

Since upgrading, my battery is being punished by Media service - it's used over 60% in a couple of hours!
Something not quite right here. I didn't format the SD partition when I updated (but I did do data/system etc. Maybe I need to format the SD too, but I don't see an option in CM for that?

Unimpressive battery life

Anybody else not terribly impressed with the battery life? Last night my bar Terry was at 87% and I pH Fayed about 30 minutes of of riptide and finished at 52% Rooted Running slim bean ROM, stock kernal. Not sure if this is normal but seems like it isn't as efficient as my former iPad 2.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I played Riptide 2 with 80% brightness for 1 hour and it only drained around 15-20% if I remember yesterday and I got my tablet yesterday as well so the battery hasn't settled in yet.
No complaints about battery life here. It's outperforming any expectations I had previously.
At the beginning, my battery drained heavily after a few hours with the screen off! After a couple of days however, battery life is the greatest than on any device I have owned. Perhaps it takes a couple of days. Overnight idle, only 2% battery drain.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I'm using Carbon rom with Elemental kernel, and my battery life is awesome. Try a different kernel, and you might get better results
Stock Rom + Jassy 5 Kernel
1d 7h 45min run time (51min screen, with gaming RR3 for 9min) Gives me still 78% battery life left.
No fancy settings.
On stock Kernel, i was getting roughly 2 1/2 - 3 days battery with 4 hours of screen time and 60-90min of intense gaming.
So I think you might have a rouge app or its the rom/kernel (yes its stock to the rom but is it modified in any way?)
Just plugged my n7 in this morning to charge, was at 6%. 6d12h uptime, 7h20 screentime (90% reading in Google Play Books). Stock, rooted, wifi set to off when idle.
Gonna have to mess around with some of the settings. Just watched a one hour show and battery went from 97-76%

I'm getting about the same battery life as the old one streaming Netflix. But if it's just regular browsing is a year better

Might want to see how stock does first? then maybe try a rom.
I had terrible battery life too, even on standby. Turns out it was a faulty unit.
Try it stock then compare. I got awesome battery life on mine stock better that OG N7

Are you guys having the battery drain while plugged in and watching Netflix? I feel as if this isn't normal. I even had lux installed with brightness at -50%

I think the problem is that you're comparing the battery life to that of an iPad. iOS devices are going to blow most Android devices out of the water when it comes to battery life.
Having said that, my new N7 seems to have better battery life than the 2012 N7.
I have been out of the loop with recent android updates, and my most recent exchanged device has very high Mediaserver usage-56% used, 10h kept awake and my battery is currently at 54%. Neither of the previous N7s I had showed this same issue, and I have used a very minimal amount of time actually using music/pictures apps. Disabling the stock media apps (gallery, play music) did nothing to stop it.

According to Aanandtech Nexus 7 2013 mini review, N7 2013's brightness is 86% brighter than N7 2012, 43% brighter than ipad 4, 54% brighter than Ipad mini, hence why when all are set to 100% brightness the N7's battery life will be substantially worse. Be more conservative with your brightness levels( 54% N7 2013 brightness =100% N7 2012 brightness) if you want battery life that is similar to Ipad2.
I've actually been very impressed with my 32GB battery life. I had the Nexus 7 (2012) 16GB and it would go dead running AOKP if left off the charger (no actual use) for like three days. I have stock 2012 32GB and have been using it heavily (same apps) and it will definitely get me through the day even with what I would consider very heavy use. If I know I'm going to be hanging out at home playing a game with bluetooth and max screen brightness I always plug mine in though.
Overall, in my opinion, a definite improvement over the 2012 version, and I have no complaints.
Edit: I was also going to suggest getting the app "Battery Drain Analyzer". It provides some cool features the default battery drain section of settings does not. It includes a percentage drain/charge per hour, estimated battery life, some charts and stuff too so you can see what is using your power.
I'm getting 10+ hours battery life.
Compared to my iPad Mini's battery life, yes my nexus 7 battery does not impress me. I guess I shouldn't expect great battery life when I play games. Maybe it was a bug but once I was playing Dead Trigger and turned the screen off but the battery still dropped VERY quickly
L. Ive also noticed that playing some games, like SVZ Defense 2, pretty much keeps the battery level constant while charging.
But other than gaming, I find battery life adequate. It's not great, but good enough for my uses. Once I take the time to do some research I hope to find a ROM that will increase my units life.
But yeah, DO NOT compare battery life to an iPad's. You will not be happy. Oh well, at least these things are better in ever other regard!
