[Q] how to update with root and more - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I rooted my xperia play 2.3.4 with zegrush. I tried to downlaod rommanger but my r800a is not supported. A friend told me to get nandroid but i cant find that in google play.
Not sure what these progrms do but i think its for updates? i just wonder also if these program are for OTA updates to keep my root. Could someone point me in the right direction. Do i need rommanage or nandroid?
My root is acting great. No problems as of 5 days of root. (keep fingers crossed)
I found this app called voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Am i on the right track for OTA updates?
Im using titanium backup for saving my apps, system and app data.
I am using wotan server if I have any problems to flash my phone with 2.3.4. Is that like a factory reset?
Thanks for your help guys! I always give thumbs up for just a reply

wotan is like flashtools. it download the stock firmware and install it. so your phone is like you use it for the first time.

Quick question for a noob rooter....

So I'm new to android, rooted on the most recent ota, then wanted to try cm6. I had to get the bootloader 76.
So now I'm back on the 3.26 build. I'm not rooted but can confirm s off how can I root again, just rerun un revoked?
If so how can I get back up to the most recent ota and root?
Tried installing the new ota rooted zip and that didn't work.
Any help is appreciated, thanks xda community!

This post might be of interest to you.
It worked well for me. Just make sure you flashed Unrevoked Forever (So you won't have any chance of loosing root)
Also, NANDroid backup.. just in case.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790394
Also, everything has to be stock or the update will fail.
i.e. Kernel needs to be the proper stock and all the .apks need to be there.
It seems like a lot of work, but it only takes like 5 min... the update takes the longest.

[Q] 2.3.4 update: keep root?

The option to update my phone just popped up on my Arc (with Rogers.)
Any body know if it will keep my root, like the previous update, or will I have to reroot afterwards?
I am aware that there is a forum for QnA, but I imagine that this thread will be a common occurance in the upcomming days, and it may be beneficial to have
one that will hopefully be answered here for a few days while people get their udpate notifications.
I also should have named the thread "2.3.4 OTA Update: Keep root?"...

You had right now 2.3.3??

Yes, I currently have stock Rogers 2.3.3 rooted, and just got the notification that OTA update is available.
I also have a bunch of bloatware frozen with titanium backup. Should I unfreeze it before updating?
I need to keep root and want to avoid flashing if at all possible, so if OTA doesn't work I'll just live with 2.3.3 until I have the time to deal with flashing.
Last time my contact book was completely messed up by the backup and restore.

Download latest 2.3.4 and update via flashtool. How about root i dont know. I have bootloader relocked and then root is always.

So I would need to update with a separate tool?
I'm sorry but your english is a little hard to understand and I want to be sure about this before I do it.

Flashtool is good. If you uncheck "wipe data" than you data will be keept. When you do OTA(overtheair) update then i dont know about root. Problably you lose it. And i think over wire update is best option.
And via flahtool you keep Root.

Alright, I'll just be patient and wait for someone who has tried it.
2.3.2 root -> OTA update -> 2.3.3 did not remove root
It would be great if I could keep it that simple again.
Thanks for your help though, I'll do what you suggested if OTA doesn't work.
Look neo forum and ther is thread about updating 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 via flashtool without losing root.
Regards!

There's enough threads in this section that cover it.

I don't want to use flashtool though,
I just want to know if I will lose root from an OTA update,
as the last OTA update did not remove it.
You wont lose root if you do an ota update

I decided to try doing the OTA update, and now I'm suddenly "up-to-date" but I only have 2.3.3.
Did they remove update, or would there be a reason I suddenly can't get the update?

No problem at all with rooted arc to update by OTA... ;-) Just relock your bootloader (otherwise you brick your phone when you use the official OTA :-S)
After you updated, you stil have complete root access..! ;-)

Awesome, now I just have to figure out why the update has disappeared.
And I don't believe I unlocked bootloader, is there any way to confirm?
My phone has gone 2.3.2 -> 2.3.3 OTA -> flash 2.3.2 -> root -> 2.3.3 OTA

Disable OTA ?

Hey guys,
I finally flashed to the .62 Firmware on my Play and also run the DoomKernal CWM. However is OTA disabled through Doomkernal or is there something I have to do to disable it ? Dont fancy bricking my phone by accident.
Thanks guys, you rock.
Your device is not able to update through OTA anymore after tinkering with your device. Rooting it and it's enough to make it unable to update

i've disabled any updates by freezing the update centre using titanium backup. if you dont want to pay for titanium, you can also freeze it using link2sd which is free. As far as i know, OTA's are not disabled by the kernel.

Help with Installing the Update while Rooted

Okay so the official update is out for all my friends and I want it too, but I'm rooted. Any help?
I know that I can unroot and then install the update, but if I unroot, do I lose all my apps? What happens to all my root apps? Do those disappear? Because once I install the update I plan on rooting right back so would all my current root apps have to be reset?
Can someone just give me a quick run-through of the easiest way to get this official update, whether it use unrooting or any other method available.
Thanks
You'll lose root for sure but its no problem as you can just root it again afterwards. Your root apps won't disappear they just won't have that access till rooted again

[Q] Question - Just Rooted Tab 10.1, how do I update going forward?

Hello
Thanks to this forum, I was able to Root my Tab Pro 10.1 and edit my permissions.xml so Apps can use my SD card.
Now that I am rooted, what happens if Samsung pushes a update? Are they any apps that help preserve root over a update (I used to use Voodoo Root Keeper on my old Asus Tablet).
Or do we update and have to wait for a new root method?
Sorry if this has been asked before, I appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Jason

I don't think you'll be able to do an ota update. When I have my rooted Tab Pro 12.2 check for updates, I get this message, "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available." Hopefully SamMobile http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ has the update soon after the ota. Then download for your region and try to root again. It'll be a first for me too.

First of, you should never have to root again. The scary part is over. You should however install TWRP. Then when a new ROM gets released, you do a TWRP backup, and flash the new ROM . No muss, no fuss. You should also be using Titanium Backup on a regular basis so that you always have a current backup of your apps and data. Much faster, easier and SAFER than an OTA backup from the manufacturer.

Hello Aybesea69, are there just stock ROMS of the OTA released?
I am familiar with TWRP, TB and flashing.
If you're feeling adventurous, there's this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2776206
It's still in the early stages, but looks promising.
I was only able to update using Kies, not OTA. Root was gone.

So you were rooted, and updated using Kies? Then you lost root? Were you able to re-root?

Sorry, I haven't tried to re-root. I'm going to wait until custom ROMs are available. But yes to your other questions. While my device was rooted, whenever I checked for updates from the tablet, I kept getting the error message that my device is modified and no updates were available. So I installed Kies on my PC to check for updates. Kies found the latest update and installed it successfully. I lost root once the update completed.
