I want to unlock the BL of My Arc S that is on Stock 4.0.4 and wondered if there is a way to do it as the Sony Instructions don't work on ICS, I really don't want to have to find and flash a GB ftf file to unlock the BL unless it is really the only way to go as I'm un-rooted so can't do a NAND backup of my phone with CWM.
Also where would I find an ftf of the 4.0.3 Kernel along with a 4.0.4 kernel ftf so I can root and upgrade the Kernel to the latest 4.0.4 stock one?

Sigh! Use the search.
The Sony unlocking method should work regardless of what version of Android you run. Unless of course, your bootloader unlocking status says No.
For the kernels and rooting, again, use the search. Go through the threads already on the topic.

First of all sorry to open a new thread but I've been reading a lot and can't find clear answers to my questions.
I have a Taiwanese R800i, retail not locked to any carrier, running 4.0.A.2.368 (2.3.3)
I already unlocked the bootloader to root my phone with 2.3.4, but the requirements to do that is that I'm already running stock SE 4.0.2.A.0.42 FW and because I unlocked my bootloader I can't use PC Companion to upgrade to 2.3.4 anymore.
How do I know which firmware version of to use 4.0.2.A.0.42 NA/UK/TW?
(TW version is not available in XDA forums anymore, dead link)
Are they safe to use even though I'm in Taiwan? I really don't know the difference between them.
I do know I can get the Chinese input running with Touchpal but:
What else do I lose? Only bloatware? (that's the reason I want to root on the first place)
As far as I know any version should be fine, but make sure you flash R800i firmware and not r800at.

So the only thing I need to worry about is whether the FW is for GSM or CDMA?
i have a unlocked boot loader if i wanted 2.3.4 could i just use the ftf file from att? i do not use my r800x as a phone. is 2.3.4 better and how so?

No, since they're different models. The ftf signature checking will deny you the ability to do so.
Go with CM7.2 or CM9 CDMA builds instead for a different experience. You could also go with the UK 2.3.3 ROMs if you want better compatibility for the touchpads in games.
Hello,
Been looking around on the forums, and kinda got a jist of how this works for the ARC, I've rooted my own Samsung galaxy S2, but Im trying to do the same for a friend.
as mentioned hes currently running 2.3.4 on LT15i 4.0.2.A.0.62. From what I've read you have to downgrade to .42? if the bootloader is locked. however it it is unlocked (which I think it is/is unlockable) then what do I do next?
I plan to root the phone then probably install cyanogen mod on it instead.
Thanks
You got 3 options with unlocked bootloader
1 you can still down grade to .42 then root with either flashtools or with zergrush easy root method.
2 with unlocked bootloader flash a custom kernel that has root already. Ie doomlords
What ever you do if I bootloader is unlocked r do not update over the air as this will brick you phone.
3 Out perhaps another option would be to flash ics room and get root very easy look for binary part in dev section.
Hope this helps

will i get ics update through ota after unlocking and re-locking my bootloader...can i install ics 4.0.4 if i receive it through ota...bcoz i read somewhere in the forum that if install official ota after unlocking bootloader it will brick the device...please help...i m using xperia arc...
There is no OTA update for the arc from GB to ICS. You will have to either flash it using FlashTool or through SEUS or PC Companion.
If you re-locked your Arc's Bootloader, yes, you can update to 4.0.4 OTA if your SI matched with the ones in the list here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/38387
If not, don't worry, I believe you will get it soon.
Edit: you need to restore your ROM to stock (GB) too, as ROM cook not really compatible with official OTA

OTA is Over The Air. There WILL NOT be any OTA update from GB to ICS!!!
ICS is a totally different version of Android. It's not something that can be added to GB like functionality etc. This will have to be done using your computer.
Really? so there will be no update OTA methods for Arc? Cos I just saw my friend update his HTC Sen XL from GB to ICS by OTA a few mins ago!
Well, that is what Sony announced. HTC may do things differently.

So should i update my phone manually....

Why don't you flash the 4.0.4 fw using Flashtool? Head over to the General section and download the link from there.
Cheers!
Figured it out!

Well u can still root your phone even it has a locked bootloader. u just cant have cwm recovery and cant use a custom kernel.
Thanks! Are there any other roms or tweaks that I can flash to my locked Xperia ion? It is an LT28at, but I flashed the LT28h onto it excluding the baseband so Im still getting my LTE from AT&T. Fairly new to all this and think its incredible!!! Thanks for all the support.

You can actually flash another version, like the lt28h, root it and install cwm. I have the lt28at flashed with lt28h jelly bean, rooted and have cwm, its totally possible. Just have to read the threads, then read it again and follow the instructions closely. Once you have cwm you can flash other roms even with a locked bootloader.

THANKS! Can you send me a link on how to root my now LT28h (Originally LT28at) so that I can flash over CWM, I seem to have lost the page that showed me how to root my phone.

Unfortunately once we have JB, CWM doesn't stick, actually it doesn't work at all. So the best I have right now is a rooted flex with the official OTA update...but no CWM At this point I only know of one other rom that is available, Ice cream flex and that is with ICS of which CWM works with.
