The us s3 is a dual core chip with only two threads available at one time at the most, same as our phone I presume. Which means you will probably are better off with the s2 until the s4 comes out.

Seriously?
GSIII
GSII
Twice the RAM, can handle an SD card twice the size of the S2, the screen is almost a half inch larger, the screen resolution is higher by a long shot (1280x720 vs 800x400) and a larger battery. I'd say the dual-core processor is a non-issue. Aside from benchmarks, you won't be pushing either of these phones enough to truly take advantage of those two cores let alone two more.
Edit: Forgot to mention, the processor is the next gen Snap Dragon S4 whereas the GS2 has the Snap Dragon S3 processor. Newer tech, better use of what it has.

I agree.. I mean our phone kicks ass. But there is not doubt that the S3 is better
I like my Roms the way I like my women..... Clean and smooth
What's also great about the s3 is how they are identical wit all us variants. The body is the same with all s3 models. Which means development is merged with Sprint atnt n Verizon. Then you have accessories that fit all models which means more to pick from.just overall a better phone not just spec wise.
My wife still had the s2 which is why I'll be on both forums but I feel there is more potential with s3

The s3 does have better hardware, but with the software available, you will notice very little, if any difference in anything you will use your phone for. You could have 8 cores, it's not going to make your phone do anything noticeably better than the s2 or gnex. I think until we get the software to utilize all the cores, the only things that really matter right now are better camera/battery/screen..

I went to t-mobile today to see the phone in person.
First impressions were less than exciting. Even though the resolution is far better, its pixel arrangement makes it look grainy. Ours seems just as sharp from normal hand held position. Also, even though its much faster, ours keeps up with all the current software and games.
On our S2, GTA 3 runs smooth with resolution on high and draw distance about 1/3 (everything else maxed). The S3 could probably handle full resolution and distance, although thats quite a bit more screen space to fill...
I would appreciate a wider variety of accessories and rom options, however ill definatly wait until its cheaper, or see whats next.
Zomg you fools. The s4 krait CPU in the s3 demolishes EVERY SoC out except the quad core exynos. Stop comparing the s4 to the s3 in our phones just because its dual core. Put it this way. The s3 in our phone is the Intel core2duo. The s4 is the Intel core i3. Both dual core but the i3, because of revamped architecture and smaller manufacturing process completely destroys the core2duo. Actually it also out performs core2quads. Cores and MHz don't make the end product. Look up benchmarks and you'll see the s4 has almost twice the performance of any dual core SoC out. Even beats tegra 3...

The s3 has a PenTile display. Pentile = poop. And as far as the processor goes yes is very nice but I think that hardware has gotten to kind of a plateau in that even with the new quad cores out there the performance jump is minimal at best from ours. My Tegra 3 tablet runs ICS equally as well as my Snapdragon S3 and can't tell the difference.

People go overboard with the pentile thing. My epic 4g had a pentile screen. I did notice a difference between that screen and this one but it isn't a deal breaker. A pentile screen at a 720p Res on a 5 inch screen wouldnt noticeable whatsoever. The difference was minimal at 480p. I doubt you'd be able to tell a difference at a high res like that.

it won't be very different on the international S3 either because our OS doesn't even utilize all 4 cores correctly..... and wouldn't 2gb ram be better for multitasking given that the OS optimizes with the utilization of 2 cores.
It might eat up numbers and crunch in more numbers per second but it can't do more things at once than its supposed to. The Intel i3 is a dual core but it's limited to two threads I think and if that use the case do is the core duo. Even though numbers might be able to conceive at the right time if the processes were not stream independent, important things like talking recording downloading streaming and torrent cannot be done any better with a resume boost.

Since it's release date on October 10, I've been debating on whether or not I should get this over the Amaze 4g and after 4 days, I decided that the galaxy s 2 is the best choice for me. Now after watching some videos of the original galaxy s 2, I want to know what things were left out in terms of processing power. All I know is that it uses the snapdragon s3 processor which runs on an a8 cortex as opposed to the a9 in the exynos processor. I know that speed is one of the things that the exynos has over snapdragon and also the fact that it's asynchronous as opposed to qualcomm running one core at a time (correct me if I'm wrong here, not savy on processors). The biggest things I know I will use on this phone is Internet, photos, media, and some gaming here and there. On YouTube I saw the original galaxy s 2 capable of running an N64 emulator with virtually no lag, though I don't know if sound was included, and the same goes for the psx emulator. I also saw how it was able to play multiple video formats (including 1080p mkv files) with no issues whatsoever. I want to know if the snapdragon processor would still be capable of running emulators at similar speeds and still have support for multiple video formats even though it's not as fast as the exynos processor. Help is definitely appreciated.
P.S. This was typed on an iPod so sorry if there are any typos and grammar mistakes.
The Qualcomm chip is asynchronous.
Right now, I don't know how much Samsung did to fine-tune the system to accommodate the hardware differences....but like you said, the Qualcomm chip is A8 and the Exynos is A9.
That speaks for itself.

Essentially, the Qualcomm chip is running on an older architecture relative to the Exynos, which is typically why the Exynos outperforms the Qualcomm even at lower clockspeeds. I'm guessing T-Mobile needed the SGS2 to be on par with with its siblings thus the higher clockspeeds (1.5ghz) to accommodate the older architecture.
The iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S if I'm not mistaken are also running chips that are based on the A9 architectures.
There is a difference when using the original SGS2 with the T-Mobile version...but it's not too drastic. What the CPU makes up in lack of speed, the big screen more than makes up for it.
I'm quite new to this forum, therefore I can't post external links yet. However, perform a google search for "How Samsung's chip change-up affects the T-Mobile Galaxy S II" the first link is an interesting article.
The normal clockspeed for this processor is 1.5GHz

What I took away from that article is that they went Snapdragon in order to use another modem chip to be able to do 42Mbps. The sacrifice is graphics performance.
Hmm, it plays my HD movie great. Not sure I will ever play a first person shooter on it...

i was about to point out the same
the Qualcomm CPU stock speed is 1.5 Ghz, the same CPU on HTC Sense was actually under clocked to 1.2 Ghz
so the new HTC Amaze is using the CPU at is normal speed like on our phone

It also sacrifices general OS performance, at least in its current state. Looks like Samsung did no optimization on this guy for the qcom SoC. As it currently stands, I find it more laggy than my (admittedly) highly optimized Epic (single core). Hopefully things will improve with devs, etc.
I had the original and was using it on att gophone,
and sold it to get this. I needed to be on a contract and Tmobile was my only option so I got this
User interface was faster and smoother, apps opened and closed in the blink of an eye
games also ran with no lag whatsoever
Screen is bigger, no hardware buttons, and faster data is a plus for me
Tmobile is very spotty in my area tho
Sometimes I feel like I should have stayed
This phone has been behaving differently
The user interface is nearly as smooth and some of my favorite games lag
(Dragon fly, modern combat 2)
Still a great phone but these 2 Arras are disappointing for me

To be clear, gaming performance will never be as good on this platform. The GPU is severely weaker than the exynos models. What remains to be seen is if the rest of the OS can be optimized though.

I am one of the people who forked out full retail. I can take a picture of my receipt to prove. We nit pick at every single phone that comes out. Trust me when I say this phone isn't a slouch. Yes it stutters once in a blue, but its fast and pretty smooth. All we need is an official update from Samsung to fix the issue or get a few custom roms. I've owned literally every smartphone that came out for T-Mobile this year and the previous years and I can honestly say this happens to be the fastest, even with the slight stutter it gets every now and then. It's just a slight software issue. I believe that this processor is capable of getting the job done.

I also paid full retail (pending Prime announcement), but I can tell you that my highly optimized Epic is smoother than this phone is right now in day-to-day use. Now, hopefully that means that there is a lot of room for improvement as this chip is theoretically faster and dual-core, but it is an open question of whether that promise will be realized.

This processor is the same one used in the now defunct HP touchpad. People have successfully overclocked their touchpads to 1.7ghz with minimal to no additional drain on battery but a noticeable speed boost. I imagine our phones will react much the same way
Ok so my question is this...
The HTC One X ( Evo 4G LTE ) will be coming with a 1.5 dual core processor... yet I hope that the SGS3 will come with a Quad Core processor... am I missing something here? Why is the One X being shipped with the same power as our current SGS2? Or can someone educate me on this? Is the One X really more powerful or is it that the U.S. carriers cant afford to sell a quad core phone for $199?
SGS3 is going to have the quadcore 1.5ghz Exerynos (spelling?) processor, apparently that's almost certain. Samsung has a even processor already built ready go that's even better, 2ghz dual-core, but they're saving that for the generation after.
And E4GT has a 1.2ghz processor? How are they the same?
Anyways the main features for the new phone are the HD display and stock ICS and LTE especially.
the architecture is different with transistors and things much closer together on these newer chipsets. just cause its the same clock speed doesnt mean its not better.

Ok so this is what my question was, because they are both dual core phones... that doesn't mean that the ET4G has the same power right?
So how important is this when choosing a new phone in 2012? I am asking because I am looking at the Galaxy Nexus or the Evo 4G LTE.... But from my experience the processor is what makes the phones faster when playing games or loading movies.
The chip in the new evo is the s4 dual core from qualcom. Otherwise known as krait. This chip gives the tegra 3 a run for its money

The chip on the EVO is better but remember that Sense isnt a light skin to carry. The Nexus runs AOSP android and doesnt need much power to run it. In real life theyre both just as smooth as each other.

Actually, in theory, a good quad core should win out in terms of battery liFe. More cores at lower frequencies.
As long as software is developed to properly utilize the hardware of course.
...
People buy based on specs. If tegra3 had onboard lte, then HTC would use it without a doubt, even if the s4 is faster and lighter on the battery.
I agree though, I would rather have a dual core processor on my phone. Especially if that means they (manufacturers) will spend more money on a better radio chip set and antenna design.

they could always make the phone a few millimeters thicker and make the battery cover the whole back, or even be the back.. but still have it removable, like my gfs phone the back is the battery, that would make it much larger still be just as slim and Ave like 3x more battery.. this phones pretty thin, if they made it as thick as the droid x or x2 then it would probably have the life of the maxx

I ment that dual core is potentially faster for android . The misconception I try to address is a cpu core exist more or less as a fpu unit, integer unit, cache space and usually other units that function as extensions like sse used to. Just because you have more doesn't mean they are more powerful.... quite the contrary usually out means lower transistor counts per core. What I understood Samsung had touched on is to simplify chip construction just adding say 40% more transistor to a very similar design they just update with newer memory, gpu, radio, etc to address power further smaller construction process like 28Nm I think and more clock states and voltage starts especially to regulate the gpu and memory...... serious weak point in our chipset/ software

Hey guys,
iam thinking of selling my galaxy nexus and buying one of the new quad core devices,
i was really excited about the new coming Huawei Ascend D quad since it will features the fastest CPU and a 16 core GPU. However, i have recently heard that it will be delayed because of some issues with the CPU until late Augest or September.
i already have a Sony Xperia S and after a small comparison between them in term of screen, camera, build quality, CPU/GPU i think that the other device was slightly better, i have already found a buyer but i still hesitate because the Gnex will get Android 4.1 and 5.x before any other device out there.
so, what do you think guys??

The galaxy S3 has the same screen as the galaxy nexus. However, the last one has more pixel density because the screen is slightly smaller, in my opinion the sony xperia s has a better screen than both with 344 ppi reality display with mobie bravia engine,
The HOX has several problems already with wi-fi connection and some other software issues,
I dont prefer the user interface of the LG optimus 4X

What can a quad core do that a dual core can't? (Besides scoring better in benchmarks which we all know are meaningless)

Hmm.. better battery life ?? Snapdragon S3 and TI OMAP 4460 are built on 45 nm
Exynos quad 32 nm and the snapdragon S4 28 nm
I know how my S3 works, you only get one CPU online + full adreno 220 support,
The other CPU will only work if you need extra power which is rare
So it is only about battrey life, you dont really need a dual core or a quad core CPU.
I like the idea of big. LITTLE CPU which is basically contains a powerfull cortex-A15 core and a cortex-A5 core which do easy to medium tasks efficiently, in case you need more power the other core wil be online to finish the job and then ofline again

Back to my point, name me a few applications that use more than 2 cores. As far as the battery life, when you have all four running, battery is gonna take a hit
In the end its your decision. You're posting this on the GN forums, you're obviously gonna get a biased response

This is correct for the current quad core cortex-A9 CPUs
However, things will be different with quad core cortex-A15 CPUs since they are so efficient
nVidia tegra 3 has 4 + 1 CPU, so they are telling us that . Our CPU is not so efficient since it was built on 40 nm and that's why we need one underclocked CPU to save battrey for the background process, people like woooow this device has 5 cores !!!!! Iam going to buy it now but they don't really know the truth about it
In other words.. we will have "real" quad core CPUs with a cortex-A15 in term of battery efficient and speed

Well, i respect your opinion and thanks for the one star rating.
However, i like to "learn" from my mistakes,
As i said before, i think that buying 2 phones of the same generation was a mistake
And that was not going to be happened if i asked people how knows about phones more than me before buying the second identical peice of plastic.
There is no harm in asking people for help and then make my own choice.
That's why we have this section, to "ask" other people
To get some informations from them
And then to make our choice

When apps become multithreaded it will have more practical use. And what? The four cores don't always fire. Battery on my S3 blows away battery on my nexus and it is only 100mah larger than the extended battery.

If no phone is worth buying to you as you said in post #3, then don't buy another phone?
You seem like you want us to justify YOUR purchase. Its your money, do some research, if you don't like the phones out right now, then wait. Simple.

My question was,
should I sell my Gnex and keep the Sony,
And "wait" for new and better devices or should I keep both?
I don't know why ppl keep telling me its your choice
Ofcourse it is my choice, iam only asking for other ppl opinions
Which will help me to make my final descion.
Just because iam thinking to sell my Gnex doesn't make me a bad guy
Isn't it?
Please, no more Angry Birds, help me or don't waste my time
I wouldn't worry about it.

No ones the bad guy in here. Simply put, whether you know it or not, chances are you've already made up your mind and like others have said, you are just looking for justification for whatever you are about to do. That simple. Whatever responses you get here are completely biased and might not reflect on your way of thinking.

For those of us still on a SGSII, no matter what the reason is (no money, no stock, price too high for s3, nothing worth a 2 year extension), what would make you upgrade?
For me I'm hoping that the next Nexus will be the super phone of my dreams AND available for t-mobile.
Specs:
Quad Core Exynos LTE Enabled 1.5Ghz processor
2 GB of ram
16/32 GB storage (expandable)
12 Megapixel camera
4.7 inch 720p screen (retinaISH dpi) One X style, Iphone style, SuperAMOLED+ style idc aslong as its high pixel to screen size and beautiful
FM Radio (stop taking **** out of phones us carriers)
Pentaband
Huge REMOVABLE battery
2 Megapixel FFC
Notification LED
MHL
Jelly Bean +
Beat headphones lol (why not)
Dedicated Camera Button
I'm tired of phones getting ****ted on when they get here to America just so Mr. corporate can make mucho mas denero.

No beats because they are only optimized for crap headphones. Once you start (I know its not the best quality... but its better than any crap headphones I can buy) streaming to your done up car stereo, that can handle REAL audio quality... then you don't want any help at all.
Just today I discovered lows I never knew existed on one song because I'd never played it in my car.
Not to mention beats are just another brand grabbing money.
Other than that i like it.

Money is always the reason.
If someone were to buy my phone for a decent price, I'd upgrade.
Other than my 2 years between upgrades being up, the things that would make me upgrade would be:
Much faster processor (better than Qualcomm S4)
720p non-pentile display
Overall size not significantly larger than t989
2gb ram
Most importantly for me: DAC as good as Wolfson
And nothing missing the t989 has. I'm extremely happy with my S2.

You hit the nail on the head with the wolfson dac. That things kicked SO MUCH ASS with my epic and nexus. Also I'd take a quad core s4 SoC over a quad exynos any day. 10 bucks says quad core s4 ass rapes the quad exynos when released. The dual core s4 krait SoC is the second fastest SoC out behind the quad exynos.

But to answer the question the next nexus will make me upgrade. Having already been an ex nexus s owner I've experienced how much better the dev support was on that device. Worlds ahead. I had aokp on my nexus last year.. with the same exact features aokp milestone 6 has and more. With the nexus you could raise the wolfson dac 5 decibels above its stock setting for some AMAZING sound processing and you could tweak the amoled screens brightness contrast and colors with all with voodoo sound. I NEED that back in my life. Call me insane but I've considered taking the huge performance hit and going back to my old nexus s because of how amazing the benefits are over this t989.

I'm also talking in the box, you can always buy better headphones, but if i'm paying (600) 200+ for my upgrade then I want the best + as much free **** and features a phone can have!

Truthfully, this. I know we're all here cause we care about benchmarks and the latest software, but I can't think of anything I want to do on this phone that it can't deliver.
I'm pretty happy with my phone now too. One of my friends just got an s3 & I got to play with it for a while last night, and I can honestly say I was NOT blown away. I ran some benchmarks on it and my phone either came out ahead or VERY close on each test. I'm sure it's probably all due to software, but still. I thought the screen on mine looked better too, honestly. I could see the pixels more clearly on his even though it's higher-res. I'm perfectly happy with the t989's performance, the only thing that could make me upgrade would be a significantly larger display since I'm a size queen, lol... I've heard that the Note will be coming to T-Mo this month, so that's what I'm saving my pennies for
I agree if the nexus came out for tmo I'd hop on it quick!

Nothing.
I don' t NEED the latest greatest, BUT, ONE THING that would make me upgrade, a camera capable of shooting over 200dpi, NOT the 72dpi garbage we're being given.
Otherwise, the SG2 is an EXTREMELY capable phone and they (manufacturers) are just tossing little bones to try and get people to ugprade and keep up with the Jones'..
....forget it, no thanks.
Saving my money.
I love the HOX+ its a great phone, but i also love the features of the Note II. I just recently got a contract with At&t and have a few days left to decide if i wanna keep the HOX+ or switch for something else. Only other phone i would switch with is the Note II or just wait for the Nexus 4. But the thing i'm worried about(which i'm having the same concerns with most phones) is At&t versions hardly getting any support when international(waaay more expensive versions) get the best roms, mods, etc. Any opinions on this matter would help.......thanx

I had the HOX+ and even though it's a nice phone. I keep coming back to the Note 2. I honestly believe that you'll be happy with the Note 2 for the simple fact that even though AT&T is slow with updates. Everything from the International version is able to be ported over to us, and there are some busy Devs at the moment keeping us happy.
Here is the order of phones I just tried... Note 2 --- IP5 ---- Note 2 ---- HOX+ ---- Note 2 ----- IP5 ----- Optimus G ---- NOTE 2... and I'm keeping it for a while this time LOL!
Lots of cool ROMs with the att gn2. I would not let that deter you from getting the phone. Be more concerned about the size and screen quality. The HTC one x+ has a killer screen!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
All the Note IIs are so similar. We will see a lot of international ROMs and plenty on the AT&T base. Check out the dev section. Anything with Multi-View is a port from the international version. Plus it probably won't be long until there is a really easy way to port your own ROM of choice. On the GS II they called it Hell-Raise. It was a two step process: flash what ever international version you wanted, then flash a tiny package that made the right changes. And that was with phones with different button layouts, and some weird physical microphone differences. The 317 and 7105 are virtually identical.

The number of people that don't feel burned by HTC in one way or another gets smaller each day. Whether its being obsoeleted with a new flagship after just a few months, or promised updates that never arrive, or both (the One X is still on the list for JB right?).
Being on a Samsung phone again is like breathing fresh air again.

Exactly HOW is the HOX+ "much faster on paper"? The extra 100mhz over the 1.6ghz in the Note 2? If you think the hox+ is much faster than the note 2 even on paper then you have very little knowledge of mobile hardware- Tegra 3 can suck my bojangles. You do realize the HOX+ only has 1gb of ram too? In virtually every comparison done, the quad exynos has dominated Tegra 3, even the higher clocked new Tegra 3 is killed by the quad exynos. I don't see any spec where it's "much faster" than the note 2,in fact, the only spec it "wins" in is internal storage.
The only devices that give the quad exynos 4412 a run for its money are the quad kraits and even then the exynos wins in many benchmarks/usage scenarios that the majority of people care about. (the only benchmark the hox+ sometimes beats the note 2 in is quadrant and it's not by much. Sun spider, antutu, geek bench all go to note 2- quadrant is heavily reflective of gaming performance only whereas the others are more demonstrative of daily use.)
Go to engadget and read the Nexus 4 review. They compare the note 2 to the Optimus G and Nexus 4. Go see how the exynos did- the devices it beat would dominate the hox+.
I'm shocked you think the hox+ is faster in *any* category- on paper or not. Half the ram, crappy processor... Yea.

Dude... calm down lol. I was referring to the quadrant benchmarks. Engadet did a review of this device and it destroyed all on that test. It also did a little better than the Note 2 on a couple other tests. I did however forget that it only has 1 GB of ram. It seems like every flagship phone that comes out has 2 GB so i assumed that HTC would be smart and follow suit. But like I already said, using the device it feels very slow compared to my Note 2 despite the higher clock speed. The Note 2 is DEFINITELY a better buy.

I dont think its fair to say benchmarks mean NOTHING...they have a story to tell as well, friend.
I personally came from the ONEX to the N2, and I gotta say, I can never go back to HTC....

HTC typically has good build quality on the outside. They have a premium feel. Other than that they are inferior in every way to Samsungs latest devices. Just my opinion. I think they are much better then they use to be but still not quite on Samsungs level.

As an ex-HD2 owner I completely disagree. HTC is only going downhill and their market share and share prices reflect that.
Since the Nexus 4 was mentioned in the OP: I had the Nexus 4 for about two weeks and it was definitely the faster than the Note 2 as far as interface goes. The Note 2 has some barely perceptible lag at times, but the Nexus 4 is instantaneous and comparable to the iPhone 5 in terms of UI response. This might simply be TouchWiz vs. no-skin and it's possible the Note 2 is just as fast on AOSP/AOKP.
I kept the Note 2 for the features, expandable storage, removable battery, battery life and since I needed something to replace my phone and tablet. If Google releases a 32GB Nexus 4 for $350/400 I would strongly consider it.

I also had the N4 and the difference is pretty minimal. It is pretty much entirely Touchwiz, which offers way more featueres at the cost of some noticable lag.
With CM10 surely coming in a more fully functional manner shortly, the Note II will be just as fast (if not faster) than the N4.
I wouldn't compare those 2 phones in any way, there is zero I was wowed about with the N4. I would rather have my Lumia 920 or GS3 back before the n4.

I thought the difference was noticeable though.
I don't think the Note 2 could be faster than the Nexus 4 if the latter has a custom kernel (e.g. franco's) to take care of the abysmal thermal throttling issue. The N4 just has faster core hardware.

It is definitely noticeable, Touchwiz is without question laggy compared to AOSP, no matter what phone you have or how hard you tweak it. This is the smoothest TW experience I have had though.
I think on even software it would be hard to see any performance difference of the N4 S4 1.5ghz quad vs the Note II's 1.6ghz Quad Exynos in the OS anyway. I will be surprised if CM10 (once closer to a finished product) is any slower than a stock N4 AOSP experience.
That all sad I'll take the minor TW lag over the N4's poor build quality (Humming, rattling, creaking), dull screen (doesn't have to be AMOLED saturated, but those colors are just bleh), poor battery life, slippery back, and onscreen buttons that hog up precious screen space. My personal opinion of course, YMMV.
