Battery Life? - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Hey guys! I got an xperia ion yesterday! (Had an HTC Aria before). Very nice phone and i was looking at this, gs3, and HTC ONe X and i had to go with this. SILKY SMOOTH OS! holy crap. i hate touch wiz and the only reason why i didnt get HTC One X was because I put use my phone as camera, music player, and I put a lot of media on my phone and I already have a 16 GB class 10 micro sd card which Im not going to put to waste and lets not forget the 50 dollar price tag!
Main reason for this post though (just registered on xda!) is because a lot of people are complaining about battery life and I just charged it yesterday and I woke up today at 6 and around 7 i pulled it away from the charger and its still running!
Just to give you an idea of what i did on this phone today since 7 am. Ran gps, called for maybe 20 min total. Wifi browsing, made a test skype call (lasting about 5-7 min), text like crazy, played the video that comes with xperia ion about two times through with max display (the display was on about 3/8, a bit low but i could see which is all that matters), took some pictures (to test it), and it lasted the whole day.
The only thing i can say is that I use wifi a lot more than data plan since I only have 200MB data plan so i turn off my data whenever i can other than GPS (cause usually im out on the road)
I attached a pic of the battery

My battery life is good... Its like the xperia play and x10 i had... Gets me through thr day since i play alot with my phone. From brwsing to gaming to watching youtube and alot more...

Mine was bad (just over 7hrs then dead) but once I let it go all the way dead then recharged full its been better 11hrs today and have 21% left.

After the first 0-100% charge, my ion has lasted me about 24 hours before it reached 10%. This is with mild usage throughout the day before until today. It's was mostly texting until I got home around 1-2pm. From there I was playing games, music, youtube, etc on the phone while having an hdmi connect it to my tv and also on wifi.

I feel like my battery is crap but then again I use it for music for a full 8 straight hours awake the entire time. It usually goes down to about 45ish. I'm going to let it completely die tonight and recharge to 100 see how it does tomorrow.

That was a huge leap forward. My wife had two Arias...both shattered with minimal effort. Sony has always had more durable hardware. It can store a lot more than the Aria too. I hope you enjoy the ion.

I have been playing with my ion a lot since I bought it on Sunday, and have noticed the battery does quite well. I have played games, downloaded a lot of apps, and used it to take notes. Tonight I heard the low battery beep for the first time. I usually charge it when I go to bed, and the battery icon has consistently been green each night. The battery does much better on my ion than it did on my X10.

I liked my Aria though it was small and pretty good until and its still unbelivable that my ion does not have ics yet and the aria does but its CM9. I can't wait to root this phone and get CM9 although I won't lie, i really like sony's UI its very light yet adds in a lot of nice features.

It definitely gets better. Ive run mine through 5 cycles now and im seeing almost a full day. Its definitely the most ive ever seen conditioning impact a batteries life.
Getting a little happier with the device every day.

Sony phones have a reputation of needing battery calibration. Too bad we cant try the old x10 method thanks to no removeable battery.

Its confitmed for any rechargable baytery that if u let it go to 0 then charge it to 100 and let it go to 0 again it will last longer and perform better.., and yes for the first time you have to let it die and charge it for 16 hours.. Then ull see how it works...

Turning off LTE mode
If someone could find a way to switch off LTE mode and switch to 3G/Edge this will help on the battery life.

After 20 hrs. of moderate use, I'm at 30% battery. That's a significant improvement over last week. Just keep discharging fully and recharge. Battery life is better than my cappy now. Cant ask for more considering the size and speed advantage of the Ion.

this will force the phone to use HSPA/+ EDGE instead

That method most definately will work the closer to first use the better. Otherwise it'll take several cycles to callibrate all the while giving inaccurate readings. Works for all phones and the more this is exercised habitually the better as well. eb

As mentioned already in this forum battery life will most certainly improve once we have root access and can erraticate all the damn services they have instanciated. Hate to be redundant on the att bloat issue but after receiving mine yesterday and pulling up the "running services" settings page all I can say is DAMN. I'm surprised as is one doesn't actually see the meter move down as it depletes.
Oh and other than the obvious and already mentioned issues my biggest complaint about the hardware so far is the difficulty in triggering the back soft-button. Maybe its something Ill eventually get used to but as of now I find myself repeatedly tapping in order to trigger. earbrain

I don't have an issue with the touch buttons. They are definitely easier than the Xperia S to me. They aren't a simple light touch. Just give it a more form touch and they work no problem.

Yeah, spec I'm already getting used to em. Went from the Droid to X10 w it came out. The Droid2 I believe had similar but soft-buttons but X10 actual raised buttons. Im just used to the X10 so that was a personal adjustment issue and not hardware.
I havn't yet encountered any other of the address book/sync issues/bug. eb

I ended up getting 9 hours out of the battery today with pretty heavy use. I'm going to run it down to zero once more, and I should be good with the calibration.

[Q] Battery Life, Standby Current

Hey all,
I just picked up a G2 and got all excited and dumped Virtuous onto it (I'm very used to Sense).
I soon realized that the battery life of this thing is ridiculously bad. I put CurrentWidget on it (I switched from Android on HD2), and noted that it's draining, on standby, at ~60-80 mA. That's very high; on the Android on HD2, it sometimes is as low as 7-9mA (on average).
I'm not doing anything particularly special, and I've got the same settings on both. It's unlikely it's the reading, as the percentages go down like crazy on the G2 (or get stuck; it often gets stuck at 96% for an hour or two and then goes down very quickly). Quantitatively, it's about 1% per five or ten minutes, while I could get maybe 1% per half hour or 45 minutes on the HD2.
Has anybody done any CurrentWidget tests on their G2? I've searched around, and it seems that not many others are using this test (it's very popular over with the HD2 kids. ). Does anybody have numbers they'd like to share? I'd be very interested in seeing them!
I'll, meanwhile, try the AOSP and stock build again to see how the widget performs on that. I'm very sure this isn't normal, though...
Thanks!
The norm for me is 28-38ma on stand by, you will not be able to get it as low as the HD2. It stays at 100% for about 1 1/2 hours after that it drops and at the 60's slows down again.

I've posted before and was able to get the phone to last 12 hours on 1%. It drained at such a low mA that it said 0 and 1 often. I will try to get it that low if i can again since i changed to RC4.
Will post screenshots and logs of information on apps running then make a guide about what settings need to be where and what files need to be deleted and added.

That's odd, though. I would've expected otherwise, considering that Android on HD2 requires most things to read/write to SD card, which would supposedly be more power-hungry than writing to NAND...
Nope; I've run tests on almost pure stock builds (just Astro + CurrentWidget + SetCPU installed, but I don't even have SetCPU running...). Happens on both Virtuous and Villain (Sense builds). Thanks for your input!

That's amazing. Please do post additional information when you have time! I'd be happy to spend some time in the coming weeks to replicate your behavior.
for some reason my g2s battery got better as time progressed.
fresh out the box=needed 2 charges a day
3 weeks later= 7am-10pm still at 36% with HEAVY use.
Shouldn't Standby eat more than the HD2 based on it being 4g? Also I use the GSM/CDMA Auto which has increased my battery life significantly. *#*#4636#*#* phone info. My time without signal was around 9% and is down to 0 since changing it. I am a pretty heavy user and I usually go about 24-30 hours on a single charge. (I'm using the chitech 1800 mah battery though.)
Edit: I'm OC'd to 1497 with 245/245 screen off profile.

I really want to get that type of battery life! It might have something to do with batterystats.bin being well conditioned. I've tried running to zero and it seems to help a little little bit...

That might be true, although I don't have any 4g around in my area. That said, I think HSPA+ is just another bit onto HSDPA, which is what the HD2 has anyway. I don't think it should consume that much more power... (3x fold!). I've tried switching to GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL), but I was using GSM Auto already. We'll see if it helps too!
Thanks guys for your input and feedback; I hope it'll help others, too.

ics and battery life

At first my girlfriend had her Nexus S updated to ics and immediately we noticed a huge difference in how long her battery lasted and she is the furthest thing from a heavy user.
So when I heard that ics ws being released for our phone my first thought was i hope that what she experienced won't be what i do as we have a better phone right?
Well I am sad to say on a stock but rooted rom I experience the same lack of battery life as her.
Now I am no beginner to Android and have changed all sorts of settings available and nothing syncs on its own and when I unplug my phone from charging in the morning I will need to plug my phone in at night before bed as my phone will be completely dead.
I have to say I am very disappointed in the battery life of thr the stock rom and hope some good kernels make it out to help.

Have you tried to find out which app/process is draining your battery? Better Battery Stats can help you identify what is using up your battery.
I had a big keep awake problem when i first installed stock ICS on my T989D. I did a full wipe of the phone and formatted my internal SD card (after backing things up of course), reinstall the same stock ICS and everything works great now. Battery life is about the same as before (stock GB w/ Synergy kernel), which is about 30 hours with moderate use.
Try CM 9. I get almost 2 days of battery life.

I've never had better battery life personally.

Though I am now on AOKP, I had great battery life on stock ICS as well. But, everything is subjective. How many email accounts are being synced? Do you have Facebook / Twitter / G+ updating every hour? Do you have news feeds continuously updating as well?
I have to agree with the poster above. Get Better Battery Stats and find the culprit draining your battery and work from there.
biggest thing draining the battery is the screen.
you can literally watch the battery usage drop 10-15% in a period of 10 to 15 minutes which is absurd when its set to low.

Wait for kernel development. Its underway as we speak. It will make a significant difference.
Some battery saving tips:
- use juicedefender and set it to aggressive mode.
- use romtoolbox or other programs to underclock cpu frequency.
- also try using telus stock ics. Very good battery life.

I have a brand new T989D (I'm new to Android, former iPhone user) and got the ICS upgrade the day I got it (9 days ago). Battery life is terrible, I'm lucky if I get 10 hours of moderate usage. The phone also tends to run very, very hot. Sometimes apps freeze and all I can do is either wait or, in some cases, remove the battery to reboot.
I'm open to any tips that will get this fixed! I haven't rooted yet (no time). I think I will try those wipe tools and reflash the stock ICS ROM.
First post btw - glad to have joined XDA!

Stock, not rooted, my battery life is great. Something is using your battery up, and flashing some exotic kernel isn't going to change that. The stock kernel works fine. You'll want to find the root of the problem. Keep a real-time (or 1-5s interval anyway) eye on the phone's current (mA) usage, and when it's high for no apparent reason, you'll know that whatever is sucking your battery is doing it right then. That should help you characterize the problem. I've noticed when my WCDMA/GSM radio signal sucks, so does the battery life, so I either turn off the radio or switch to GSM only when I'm in that area. If your display is what's eating your battery, well a kernel can't stop that. Turn the brightness down, leave it on auto-brightness, or just deal with it if you need the display on all the time. But if tweaking and modding makes you happy, by all means...

I have the same complaint. The "screen" battery usage is just unacceptable, especially compared to GB. My phone has been draining from a full charge for ~4.5 hours and my screen usage is 70% and battery is down to 65% with hardly 10 minutes of screen-on time.
I use an app called autostarts and you basically enable/disable apps that start running when certain events happen (phone startup, wifi being turned on, incoming call/sms/mms, other apps turning on, etc.). Just make sure you do your homework so you dont disable something critical. Hopefully this app works on ICS. You'll be surprised what different events make certain apps turn on automaticly. Screen, data/wifi, gps and bluetooth are the biggest battery drainers. No matter what Rom you are on if you don't keep control of those items your battery will drain fast. Keep ur screen on auto, let it go off @ 15 seconds ( you have to be pretty used to your phone for that setting not to annoy you), turn OFF your data or wifi when not in use. With bluetooth and gps...well u know that when you use them your battery is gonna drain faster than normal...just keep that in mind. Its all pretty much common sense.
I'm not going to tell you how much battery time I get cuz its nonsense. There are times my phone lasts till the next day and others Im charging it by sundown. Then again Im still on Juggs n Darkside kernel and Im gonna wait a bit still b4 I make the switch. Also don't go by what other people say on battery life cuz if you might not get the same results on that ROM. Everyone of our devices is unique and acts different. Everyone user uses their phone different. You can't define "light, moderate, heavy" use so don't go by that either.

After upgrading to ICS stock unrooted battery life sucked (5-6hrs). I did the whole remove battery, factory reset and still sucked.

Bingo. Vastly different battery life between ROM's is generally BS. Every once in a great while one of these threads has merit but typically someone saying ROM X had "Killer" battery life is clueless and drinking the koolaid. Then a placebo effect takes place. And definitely someones "Heavy" use is subjective. If someone says they get a day out of an android phone they are not heavy users by my definition. It doesn't happen with heavy use. Perhaps the Razr Maxx or another phone with a very large battery but I've had 5 Android phones. If I get past noon it's because I am not using my phone that much and forget about a full day. It's never happened in the 4 years I've used google OS phones. Never.

Rogers Galaxy S3 battery drains ultrafast

Hi folks,
I have had my rogers S3 for several days now. while i love it very much but one issue frustrates me. I get only about 6-7 hours for one charge on a maybe a little bit more than moderate use.
I read somewhere there was an error in one of the system config files but that article was talking about the international version. do any of you experience the same?
My GS3 battery life is going against all the reviews. help.
I had the same problem, I did a factory reset and it seems to be considerably better now.
not sure why the phone kept going into deep discharge, but it hasn't done it since and it's been a week or so now.. is your phone also warm near the USB connector?
The error in the config file was just in regards to the reporting of usage.. Cell Standby usage was being over-reported.. I am not seeing that as being the case on my Rogers SGS3..
One thing I did do is nuke all the rogers installed apps.. I got sick of the VVM+ whining constantly about not being able to work over WiFi.. I just used Titanium Backup to freeze all of the rogers apps.. (rather than uninstalling them).. battery life is quite good actually.. very surprised.

Well.. this may not be a fix but it really worked forr me. Battery time was at least trippeled.
I drained my battery until the phone shut down, then I connected the charger WITHOUT turning on the phone (allright I KNOW it sounds stupid). Noticed the time to charge it fully increased from 1.5-2 hours to 4-5 hours.
I had to charge the phone during the day before, now it last for 2 days at least.
The cell standby is still wrong but that is just a indication fault, this was a real problem for me.
it's the rogers apps!!!
FYI - disable the rogers apps (all of them) and your battery life will DRASTICALLY increase. I've tested this with them enabled (battery life sucked), and disabled (battery lasted for like 1.5+ days).
Oh and let rogers know their apps suck like I did. The more people that report it the more chance they might actually fix them. A fun way is to do it to their twitter account @rogershelps
If you decide to keep them disabled, be sure to call Rogers and tell them to remove any of the features those apps use...thus reducing you monthly bill.

With root you can either delete them or use titanium backup to freeze them (stop them from running or updating).
I did this (freeze the Rogers apps and most of the samsung ones) and get all day battery life (6am to midnight) with between 4 & 5 hours of screen time.

I've found that battery life is related to cell coverage. If I have 3-5 bars and I'm not using the phone I could lose about a percent of battery per hour and my phone will run at a 40-45 when I do use it. If I only have 1 or 2 bats and it keeps switching between 3g and 4G I could easily lose 6-10 percent an hour and my phone will run at 50 or so degrees celcius. A restart seems to help the phone get a better lock. All this temps were cpu temps.
I just did a wipe/reset and found that this worked for me. I couldn't squeeze out a day with it and now go to bed with 30-40 percent left.
Battery life
My battery life on a debloated stock build was average. I was getting about 16-18hrs on moderate use. I've recently tried CPU Editor battery saver profile and so far its going great. I'll post back on the results after I go through a few charging/discharging cycles.
The forum page for the CPU Editor is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798765
[MOD/SCRIPT]CPU Editor SGS3 Edition - Secret to Die Hard Battery
I'm with rogers and my battery is pretty awful too. Not quite as bad as yours, but still not as good as I'd hope with LTE off.
What kind of usage do you have though ? For example I work with a guy who has the same model and was complaining about battery. I checked his stats and was at 35 percent battery with 4 hours display time. If you're getting 5 to 6 hours screen on time that's enough to kill battery. If its in standby for 6 to 7 hours and battery is dying then something is wrong

I've had very similar issues. Tried several ROMs and had charging problems and finally ended up on cm10 and it took about 3.5 hours to charge from 30% to 85%. Then dropped to 80% after only thirty minutes off the charger. Not sure exactly what to do to fix the issue.

Excellent! with heavy use of ~ 200 emails a day 1h on internet and about 30min looking up news and 1-2h of calls i get 12-16h.
I tried the best I knew how and I couldnt kill the battery for 2 days. I ran everything at once (not truly everything) and it just wouldn't die.

Battery is ridiculous. After diagnosing my wifi wakelock issue and installing jedi rom I get 4 hoursish per 1% when it goes into sleep, and that's in a basement mostly with horrible reception.
im getting worse battery life ever since the multiwindow update. not sure if anyone else has the same issue, but it seems like tmobile users are complaining about the same thing. it might be due to lack of battery calibration.
Well, here's a visual. Just achieved this impressive feat. 81 HOURS on pure battery! Almost 3.5 hours of screen-on time. I choose to not utilize my phone much over the holiday weekend, so that explains the low screen-on time. Regardless, I think these results are more than impressive. Nothing was restricted on my device. Live wallpaper going the whole time, auto screen brightness (usually a high setting), WiFi going, auto-syncing from emails to Facebook to Twitter, watched a bit of "The Dark Knight Rises" in full-1080p HD, made a bunch of miscellaneous phone calls. I am more than amazed at this phone and its battery. Haven't seen anything close to this in more than five years or so. These results are after updating to 4.1.2 with multi-window, and these are the best results I've ever gotten on this device.
On a side note, if anyone is getting results like the first poster with 8+ hours of screen-on time, it would really help if you described what you typically do with your phone and what you may have done to your phone. Just posting a screenshot tells nothing. You could be web browsing all day with your screen set to 20% brightness, and nothing more. What are you doing? Watching movies? Listening to music? Emailing? Texting? And if you're rooted that makes a ton of difference, so the results wouldn't be exactly truthful or accurate I should say.

Sorry for the lack of detail, I should have included that. I was browsing the net on wifi, playing Words, emailing/texting, various phone calls, watching youtube videos, and spending time on the XDA app. (of course)
I'm rooted and using clean rom 3.5. Auto brightness is on and I'm about 50% on the slider.
Here is where I sit today: (not much youtube though)

^^^ Thanks. So, that does change things, since you're rooted. The reason why I'm making a big deal about it, is because your results (and anyone else rooted) aren't typical results of someone stock. So a person not knowing any better would assuming they'd get your battery results from stock.
How is that possible? I use my note for about 5hrs of screen time and it's at like 3%. I am on an international rom and I undervolted along with perseus 1.8ghz kernel. Even when I did not have perse us, I never got above 6hrs? What settings do you use? I'm on wifi all day with the brightness All the way down. Please let me know! I really want to get that 8hrs of screen on time!

Clean Rom 3.5, I also make sure and close out of anything I'm not using. I also use the ES Task Manager widget to clear my ram before I power down for any period of time.
That's about it, besides not having a ton of widgets running.
I didn't get much over six hours of screen time with my Jedi Rom, but in fairness to it, it was my first rom and I don't think I did it quite right, installing other things with it that probably weren't compatible.

Like Dr. Evo points out, one of the great things about custom roms is they get rid of all the bloatware from ATT and other carriers. Stock I was lucky to have 1gb of free ram at any time, now I'm always around 1.1-1.2gb free without much effort on my part.

Xperia ion not so great battery life...

Hi guys,
I used to have an LT22i with GB, and even though I was not thrilled with its battery life, I could perfectly live with it.
Right now I'm using an LT28h with ICS, and I was expecting to get much better battery life because:
. the battery is something like 1900 mAh, rather than the LT22i's 1380 mAh
. It's running ICS instead of GB
. I know the screen is bigger, but I often use it with less brightness than the gorgeous LT22i display did
Nevertheless, my feeling is that battery life on LT28h is roughly the same as what I had with the LT22i.
I checked the battery menu and I can see that Android System is what uses the most battery. On LT22i, it was the screen.
On the battery menu, when I click on Android System, I get:
CPU total: 4m21s
Keep awake: 5h48m36s
The keep awake time seems huge!
So, I've installed BetterBatteryStats in order to find the main battery consumers included in "Android System". But BetterBatteryStats tells me that the phone is in deep sleep most of the time.
I also have installed SystemPanel but I don't see any System Processes taking away much CPU.
Any clues on what's going on here?
Thanks in advance!
Bigger screen = bigger battery consumption
Well other than that, ics use much battery

Yes..bigger screen use more battery usage..I'm suggesting you to use app Greenify to hibernate apps that always running at background..Updating to JB rom is better than ICS because it have extended battery mod..It's similar to Juice Defender..

I think there is something wrong with Ion's buttery. Maybe my Ion. My brother XS hold atleast 12 hrs when my Ion hold 8 hrs with same usage. Tried many ROMs but with no luck.
Ps. This thread goes to Q&A section. Thread reported.

Nop. I compared with untouched stock firmware on both. Using exactly same apps. (6 hours of different is too much)
When I bought my phone it hold for 2-3 hours with ICS (too little for a phone). But now when I use JB at least I an use for 6 hours with less usage.

Hmm maybe screen size is factor of this?It is true that Ion got 1900 mAh,but its screen 4.6" HD + 1900 maH vs 4" qHD + 1350 mAh...soo...maybe that's the only factor?

well for me battery in JB is good but battery life in ICS is way better. well you must need to have an app called greenify.. it helps you to hibernate all the apps you dont use and also you dont need that consumes the battery juices from your phone. my ICS ion .68 is indeed superb well why i love the ics rather than the jb? stock JB makes my ion freeze when using 3g/4g conectivity and most likely to happen when downloading in the play store so i used the ics which suits me way better since im an data user not a wifi user.
so try it out pal and hope it will help you..
Keep awake times of 5+ hours is definitely huge and wrong. I have had the same issue many times, usually it comes down to Google's location services. Check your location settings and see which ones are turned on, and also go into Google maps and find the settings there, it has it`s own location settings too. If no luck there, try turning off auto-sync for different apps, go into e-mail settings and click auto update every hour instead of every minute, check wifi settings to make sure it`s always on only when plugged in, because if it`s not off when your phone is sleeping and you go out it will try to find networks. Play around with it until keepawakes are under half an hour or so each day.

Hi there,
here's a screenshot of my battery usage (the fact that "screen" isn't the first one on the list is what made me try to figure out what is happening).
In terms of settings:
. Google location services are on (though not GPS). My Xperia P also had them on and "Screen" was always on top of the list
. Google maps is a bit useless without location, but I'll try to disable it... Once again, my Xperia P had Google maps location on
. I've turned autosync off for pretty much everything (and I use JuiceDefender to connect once every hour)
. e-mail is set to update once every hour
. wi-fi is only on when plugged in
Thanks.
The only other thing that's worked for me when android system or android os starts glitching with wake locks is restarting my phone right after I've finished charging it. Most of the time after doing this a couple times it seems to sort itself out.
Sent from my LT28i using xda app-developers app
Hi guys,
after having disabled all Location Services yesterday, battery life was not short at all - last night I still had 46% battery after a 16h40m on battery time. Nevertheless, Android System is still using 42% of battery and has a keep awake of over 6h (see attached screenshots).
Other notes:
. I don't restart the phone every morning after charging (actually I do restart the phone every night before charging) but today I did it and battery life is not appearing to be better - actually it appears to be worse
. I can't use greenify because I'm not rooted
So what is going on here exactly?
I'm out of ideas simply because android system has so many processes under its name its hard to tell which one exactly is acting up. I've put a couple screens of mine to show it is possible lol. All I got left to say is update to jelly bean and hope things get sorted out.

The strange part is... battery life is not exactly bad... it just isn't spectacular, and maybe it could be if keep awake time was less.
Note: I will update to JB only after I manage to un-soft-brick my Xperia P... just as a precaution... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2262035&page=3
All the luck to you. And yea, your battery life is pretty good considering, but if you use your phone a lot and have quite a bit of screen on time then it'll all add up.
