Google's- Project Glass - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So everyone should know about the Glass Project by now and I wanted to know if anyone is interested in them?
Let me be clear, I am not asking if you think it's cool or impressive but would you actually wear them around? What would you think about them if everyone could have them as easily as a bluetooth or phone?
I don't wear glasses so I think I would find them distracting and cumbersome. Also, I think it would do more to separate people.
Also, while on the subject of google products, could some of you confirm that there are actually people somewhere who use any of the google products besides maps or mail? Thanks

I like the idea, but it's a bit too limited right now. Maybe in the future when/if it's expanded upon.
And most definitely NOT at $1500.....
I do wear glasses/contacts, so it wouldn't be too distracting.

Yes, I would actually wear them around. Maybe not all the time, but not just occasionally. Although I'm looking forward to them developing to the point where they can integrate to a pair of "normal" glasses.

I think it's a logical progression from slow information through to instantaneous information (letter->phone->mobile phone/internet->bluetooth/video calling->lightweight wearable visual interfaces->cochlear/optic implants). Whether people like it or not, having more information available faster is highly desirable. As it becomes possible, it is inevitable.

This is true, although this is not a new idea. In some situations, wearable computers with visual interfaces mounted on a "goggle" or "glasses" setup have been accepted for decades. As the technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, it will become more socially accepted. Just think about how acceptable it is now to talk to yourself like a crazy person on the street, now that bluetooth headsets are affordable, easy to use, and common.
And wearing glasses isn't cumbersome or distracting. Just like wearing clothing isn't cumbersome or distracting (well, some clothing). Humans are very adaptable.

In the range of bluetooth is what I would consider a workable price point. And yes on the expanded upon thought... need some good independent devs working on this stuff making actually useful tools and keeping advertisements from encroaching too much.

Also yes. I want an app which shows me that that-big-guy-over-there's power level is OVER 9,000!!!

Did the quality of apps just take a nosedive?

Is it just me that's noticing this? Nowadays most of the new apps are just terrible. For example "IM Buddy", I can't fathom how this piece of shift passed certification. It's mind boggling.
If you think that's bad, just look at 90% of the iPhone's app store! This is why quantity doesn't trump quality.
iPhone and Android users keep quoting the NUMBER of apps in their stores as being somehow the best indicator of how a store is doing, but in the end a store with 4,000 top quality apps is far better than a store with 300,000 rotten eggs.
I mean, does the music business tout how many records they have? Is Sony BMG better than EMI because they've put out more music? Of course not. It's all down to the quality of the artists.
Same with apps.
All app stores will end up with some dross. I pray the WP7 store will end up with less of it. All the dross does it make the cream harder to find.
This is the problem now that MS has where they are being judged by quantity when it comes to apps more than quality so they will put stuff through that they otherwise would not had the media let up on the bashing. Though its worth noting that android has a lot worse and is flooded with pure rubbish.
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks the marketplace is full of mostly crap-ware. Other than games, I haven't bought a single thing from the marketplace. The majority of the apps on there regurgitate stuff you could find by doing a simple goobing search. Most of the decent stuff is freeware anyway, like YouTube, Facebook, IMDB, Adobe Reader.
And how many tip-calculators are there!! Do people really calculate their tips based on how much they paid, how many people there are and what percentage tip they want to leave?? You could just calculate how much your meal was and then round the figure off like every other completely sane person.
Solutions looking for problems if you ask me.

sometimes it's really difficult to calculate a 10% tip.. i have 5 tip calculators just in case one of them messes up.
I'm hoping that once a month or something, they get their interns over there at MS to go through the apps and delete the crap/ duplicate apps and notify the developer that they need to up their game.
Do we really need 8 different live-book apps from the same guy, one of which is about a bridge they put up near him?

I don't think it's any worse than it's been from the start. It's always a lot of crap and some good stuff. I can't agree with the guy who said he'd never purchase anything that's not a game. I've purchased Pictures Labs, Stocks Tile, Cocktail Flow, iKamasutra, Personal Shopping Assistant, Word Explorer Dictionary, and I'll give the $3 to Seymour whenever the trial asks me to. I have another 20 or so free apps installed that are pretty good, too.
i don't think we should be worried about what apps go in. what really needs to happen is that the market place itself needs a bit of a revamp in terms of functionality. Possible things that could be put in which would easily make the market place stand up above all rivals are... an advanced search for it, change logs, friends using app, trial/buy ratio, most downloaded/purchased in last day/week/month, feature requests (with rating for request), dev interactions (someway that the dev can get feedback on a particular feature), app beta testing (e.g. one of us makes an app, and we want just the xda community to beta test it before we ship it out for the masses).
all of these are just little ideas that could easily improve the market, help devs bring better products, and ultimately separate the crapware from the awesomeware.
Where I have spent $$$ on apps..
Games: Many - mostly XBL but a couple not XBL worth buying (try a game called Decent... it's really great looking and fun)
Apps: YomoMedia - it's a good RSS feeder and reader... Converter Pro... very cool app for converting everything including currency. Thumba 2 - best image editor on WP7... bar-none. Morfo - because it's retarded and fun. Metro Web Browser - it's cool but it was kind of a waste - it does add some novel features to browsing but not having it integrated is kinda well... worthless. Collage - another great picture app. Picture Frame - another good one for displaying pictures. Picture Labs... not as good as Thumba. Presenter - cool way to control my powerpoints alas not the best solution without Bluetooth however!
Let's think for a minute. The iPhone App Store is filled largely with...garbage apps. Same with Android Market (perhaps more so). What made you guys think that Windows Marketplace wasn't going to suffer the same fate?
wish they would let US, the community, screen the apps i.e. which gets approved or which gets trashed. just wishful thinking

thanks n8ter. i never knew you could do that. what if there is no decimal to move to the left? but if you move the decimal to the left and the left way is right and the right way is wrong what is left is just the wrong way through the centre and it all becomes mind bottling...
i know it's sometimes difficult to sense sarcasm but you'd think that common sense would factor in somewhere..
but seriously...
there are lots of useless apps in any marketplace but you need that base of useless apps which draws in more users (just because of publicized numbers of apps) and this in turn will attract more developers.
so i welcome all these useless/junk apps.. i won't be using them but they are good for inflating the number of apps in WP7

Well, I'm going to add three QUALITY apps to the Norwegian market as soon as it opens. Might even have to release them as free apps on the american/english markets until the Norwegian one opens, as licenses are bound to the country you buy it from. So...if I sell through foreign market, users will lose their license when they move to the domestic one :S
Crap apps are easy to make
Good apps take time
This is why there were good apps at launch, but now you see more crap. Give it another month or so, and the tides will turn. Keeping the Zune market from being plagued like the Ios store and Android store, that will be hard to do.

[Q] Survival apps for when TSHTF?

I have smart tools, most handy thing out of that is the compass basically.
So im asking, what are the best survival apps?
Im no conspiracy nut, but it doesn't take a genius to realize the earth is going through stuff it never has before.
Survival apps meaning:
Any guides (i already have the US army & Navy guides)
Any tools that utilizes the Epic's tech (i.e compass, solar wind activity)
If we do not already, someone needs to start coding some serious apps.
Also, if anyone knows of any good ad-hoc programs for when cell towers go down.
Having a nice shiny phone wont mean **** when the cell towers go down.
Take this seriously, please.
When the towers go down and all that madness starts happening, how do you plan on charging your shiny phone?
Edit: As snide a response as this is, I'm being serious. There's better ways to be prepared.
In all seriousness, anything a smartphone can do (assuming network infrastructure is kaput) is better done with a purpose built tool. If TSHTF, you really think a day or two of battery life is gonna cut it?
Better to get a standalone analog compass, a good set of maps, and a decent Yaesu HT ham radio. No reason to reinvent the wheel.
(Unless you want to play Angry Birds)

**** hits the fan, you have a phone for 2-3 MAX, what apps are you gonna have that will help you?
You think i assume our Epics are gonna be solar charged or something?
So again, 2-3 days max...what apps are going to be the most helpful?
EDIT: If you're going to state the obvious (phone dying) then dont bother posting, im fully aware of
that as its the big pink elephant in the room.

It's okay. I'm thank-worthy. As much as I love technology and the cool things it can do... I wouldn't really bother. You're a lot better off learning basic things like first aid and having the head knowledge than being reliant on anything. Also, it's awfully optimistic to hope for more than 24 hours max if you ask me.

Lol, you're an interesting fellow -- interesting is the nicest word I can think of at the moment.
I have everything else covered, dry meals, water filters, i have enough first aid kits to aid a village. I have much more aid that i wont list as it comes from ex-military friends, trust me when I say I have everything else covered.
So again, when TSHTF, what are the most useful apps?
I cant even believe im trying to explain to you the importance of having survival apps on your phone, feel like im taking crazy pills or something.
EDIT: and no, you are not thank worthy -- not even close. Please abandon the thread if you continue to think small small-mindedly, on the other hand
if you want to contribute, please do.
They have solar chargers for laptops which will hold over 10 full cellphone charges and require something like 10 hours of sunlight to get those 10 full charges. With them, you could charge your cell phone as fast as you could with a normal power adapter from the wall.
I think they also have $50 range solar chargers which would hold about 3-4 cell phone charges, and get your cell phone charged fully in 3-4 hours from sunlight or from the built-in battery.
I'll take a stab at a serious reply for ya...
Other than a compass, obviously... A GPS program with pre-downloaded maps might come in handy, something like Gaia GPS, perhaps, where you can get maps with hiking trails listed. I figure if something happens to take out the satellites, you probably wouldn't be around to worry about much else!

Gotta love 'em rednecks.
Thanks Nabbed & Dalmus, will definitely look into both of those.
As for the others, the ignorance is amazing.
Ill list some of my own if anyone didnt already know about them:
BrightestFlashlight
U.S. Army Survival Guide
U.S. Navy Seal Training Guide (which i downloaded & loaded onto my phone w/ a pdf reader)
Boskoi (utilizes google maps (albeit if its still up) to show you ALL edible sources around you, nuts, fruits, berries, even fungi.
ICE: In Case of Emergence (shows you First & Local responders (police stations, hospitals) and also gives you information on allergies, specific medical conditions,
how to treat someone who is unconscious, ect.
Also remember, if you have some steel wool & enough tinder you can start a fire with your own battery.
Small-minded thinking gets you nowhere, open-minded with a dash of doubt is most important.
Not just outright "Oh you think you're phone will save you?"

If your really looking for a serious note on this and I am still confused why you'd rely on a cell phone when things go down but I'd get all the guides, local maps, points in interest I.e. police stations, military bases, hospitals and load them into PDF files then save them on your phone so you can have all the info ready. No cell reception required.

You'd be much better served with a glock. If you want to shoot bandits in the case of a national emergency, a handgun trumps the rifle.
Also, you seem to be confused, friend. If you are going up against a totalitarian government, then a rifle is a good choice. A handgun is much better in the case of riots. Your confusion seems to stem from the misinterpretation of the Second Amendment. You see, you can fight against injustice with a rifle, but a handgun is much more useful in case of civil disobedience.
I have to repeat these obvious truths 3 times over because rednecks really don't think for themselves.

Market Place is a dead grave.

I think we all agree on this right and are on the same page on this..
Or is their still some fanboys left who think we will have even close to 25% of the apps/games that andoid and Iphone market have??
Are you really that terrible a troll? At present we have about 1/8th of the current android market. However, we have more than double what either other OS had after it's first year. Can we please make an I.Q. test a requirement for joining these forums?
37400 apps with 16% having trial would be 43000 by Android/iOS standards (you'd get "lite" versions instead of trial). It's not a bad number, and it's growing. There was a slump pre-Mango, but the pace is fast again.
Of course, numbers aren't everything. There are categories with very poor selection such as offline navigation or instant messaging, no support for additional audio/video codecs, and total lack of graphics heavy games. Other than that, and niche single-purpose apps, I'd say WP7 has most bases covered.
I personally have everything I had on the iPhone. And I'm talking about dozens of apps here.
How many torches and soundboards do you really need lol
Dead Grave? I don't think so. I have all the apps I need, even loads of games. Gotta admit though that it depends on people's needs. And yeah, iPhone and Android have better games available so far, but I'm convinced it will change once Windows Phone gains more marketshare.

Its not that there are no apps, or no devs, there is no user base interest....THAT is the problem.
I can count the number of apps I've rated and reviewed on 2 hands. I've tried many times that.
That said, I doubt its a lack of interest. It's a lack of user base, which is something we all know is currently an issue on the platform.

I just really don't find it practical at all.
Let's see... I could either...
A) hit search and type what I want real quick and hit enter
or
B) load up an app, talk to it, have it take a second to figure out what I'm saying, then it searches and, assuming it understood me correctly (and don't give me the BS that Siri always does I tried it and it doesn't), get what I could have spent half the time looking for handed to me....and look like a weirdo in public doing it.
Yeah, no thanks, I'll choose A.
I just don't understand the fascination with this recent crop of voice-recognition software. I get the "natural language interpretation" angle. That is exactly what needs to be enhanced...but...aside from that (and procession power, sampling ability and storage capacity) I have been doing command and action oriented voice recognition since, what, 1992? 1993? It was an addon pack to OS/2 v3.0 Warp. I think Dragon Naturally Speaking came out shortly thereafter....I could be wrong, It's been a while and I was a teenager back then.
Sure, the response is quicker...some times, we are network bound now....and it is a slight bit more accurate, they used to be trained to you....and thank GOD it doesn't require the training sessions it used to, though that reduces flexibility for accents and dialects....but...it's the same god-damned trick. Siri is no different, it's just a slightly (very slightly) more thoughtful implementation of the same 20+ year old technology except now we are server bound which, on Sprint, can be a horrifying experience at times.
I do think this is one of the many "next steps", but, it still hasn't gone gold yet. I'm a little surprised that Apple put out beta software. Especially given that it's been beta for 20 years now. There is no end game. It's infinitely incremental improvement....perhaps that is why. Though I think it is more telling that Apple felt they needed something ostensibly "this big" to compete that they were willing to put out beta software.
Interesting times....
I'm not gonna lie I love Siri for things like setting alarms, meetings, reminders, and calendar events. Stuff like that is helpful and quick but I don't need it to text for me or read me texts or search for me.
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but "Majel" could refer to Majel Barrett Roddenberry, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. She was and still often is the voice of Starfleet's computers.
its funny we look schizo talking into our PHONES... I think its the note-passing tween girl 'social' networking market that keeps not talking on our phones alive... imagine if people were on an old corded phone talking to all their friends as much as people text now... I know I would throw that person out if my house... anyways... I like voice recognition for driving... and I talk texts all the time in my work van... dreaming of sideswiping the idiots texting while driving... seriously... doing makeup/shaving while driving is bad enough... but texting is just silly... youre not that important, get over yourself... I dont care who you are. Heres an idea... here in WA state, we have a distracted driving law... poorly enforced... it would be AWESOME if those who got caught texting while driving had the transcripts of the conversation read aloud in court... and hopefully published if funny enough.
grrrr... phones are for hacking not idle conversation!
I still don't understand why Siri is even this big of a discussion like Matty said, it'd be much faster to do it manually then to wait on a robot.

Someone should hack into CIQ severs and see how much Siri is used after the first week.
My guess? Rarely.
It's just a novelty.

Ways for this to blow Siri out of the water:
Use Majel Roddenbury's voice from Star Trek licensed from her son
Integrate Siri-like voice commands to an API for IP-remote applications for Google TV and other Smart TVs
This would pretty much steal the thunder away from any Apple TV rumor
its gonna be tuff apple fanboys stick around no matter how much better google shows it is

[Q] What happened to the forum???

Not been on the SW3 forum in quite a while but just visited now and it seems that all topic s have now all just been thrown into one section?
What happened to the separation of development, general, help and app topics??

Not enough people to justify a long categories list of watches that nobody use

I'm not talking about categories of watches. I'm referring to sub-categories within the specific watch forum of a watch like General/Help/Development etc. We previously had them in here not gone.
...Also, many, many people use WearOS watches. Especially since 2.0. Not sure where you're getting the idea that "nobody" use them. You're either misinformed or you're just trolling.
I'm still using the watch despite everything.
It still works fine, except for the step counter but I don't care.
If we were to throw away all functional tech products only because of "unfair" business decisions regarding the updates we will waste money for nothing.
Sorry for the OT
