NOTE: before i begin i want to say that im NOT bashing anyone or any developers!!! i love them and thank them for everything that they have done to make android what it is!!!! THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!!
now to begin..
do you guys think that both software and hardware (at least in the mobile world) are moving too fast?
Hardware:i mean look at the tegra series, with Wayne, Grey, Logan, and last but not least Stark (definitely not least; it is projected to 75 times stronger then tegra2) . and now we have a $200 tablet with a quadcore CPU with 178 degree viewing angle. that runs better then a $500 tablet! YES, thats right the nexus 7 run better (as in it is smoother, higher benchmark, and games will run better, less lag) then the asus transformer prime!!!!
Software: look how much has change between gingerbread (2.3.7) and jellybean (4.1). it has grown to be sooooo much. and developers (this is what im talking about at the top... im NOT bashing) but they can't keep up, and not only the people making custom ROMs but OEMs cant keep up. the jellybean SDK is out (and hopefully soon the source will be too) and we dont even have ICS! and look at cyanogen mod they brought ICS nightlies to a few specific devices but soon ICS will be an old version of android. and hopefully they will try to keep up with android. the code keeps changing so developers (like CM, AOKP, and straight AOSP) have to relearn the source code.
the mobile world is changing at a amazing rate and things will never be the same
again im NOT bashing i thank everyone
The devs here are ahead of the manufacturers. It's not really that it's moving so fast, it's just that the manufacturers are behind. Think about it, as a company, would you continue to lay out to your employees to update a phone that you're no longer selling (making money on)?
Realize that the Google phones (nexus etc) are receiving jelly bean, etc as they are built...

yes the one specific device that google planned the hardware for....
but...
look at CM7 it got to a lot of devices (stable) ( i think between 60 and 80) but CM9 has gotten to a select few ( not stable but nightlies) and there is a new version of android that hopefully they will move to
I personally think either the OEMs need to pick up the pace and make a commitment to the customers that they will support their phones for 24 months and that if a new version of android drops. They will have it available for download to that device within. 6months of release. What does this mean for the OEM. They would have to hire more quality employes that can code and bust ass. Or Google needs to pish back releases from once a year to once every 18 months or so. I personally feel the oems should rise up and start making some waves and getting g these updates and phone knocked out. They could do it if they wanted. But they don't want to hire more employees and **** cause that would cut into profits. This k about it. If there was a team of 8-10 devs per device for a manufacturer. Their sole job would be to keep that device updated with the latest software. Once the 24 month mark hit the device. Move them to another new device and start again. Yeah it would cost more. But it would make for happy customers and happy customer buy more phones from you.

I don't think it's moving to fast. I'm a firm believer that tech companies have tech that to us would be 5 years advanced, but they're just sitting on it to stretch it out and milk the money.

Probably most of you didn't catch the Reddit post about Linus's talk recently, but I do agree with him on one thing. "Nvidia, **** you (flips the camera the bird)!"
http://m.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2012/06/torvalds-nvidia-linux/
LOL
" Then he took a bit of shot at Microsoft — the historical rival of Linux. He said that Linux is the only operating system that uses the same kernel across all devices — and that this includes Microsoft Windows. “Nobody has ever done that before,” he said. “[Microsoft] claims they’re trying to [create a single kernel with] Windows 8. They’re lying. They’re not. They’re full of ****.”"
I love Linus for not being afraid to speak his mind wherever that might be.
the only reason i choose the tegra series is because the majority of people know about it and they are very powerful chips

Wow!!! I never noticed that.
I have to agree??? I think that it is moving too fast. You cant even hold a phone for 6 months now with out it being outdated. The nexus was supposed to be the top android phone, and I think google dropped the ball on that with the nexus s, and then they started making them carrier specific, which ruins the freaking point of having a nexus. Now you have samsung releasing "s voice" before google releases "google now", samsung releasing a quad core before google, blah, blah, blah..... I dont know. The majority of phones dont have ICS yet, but here comes google releasing JB. OEMs have been fu**ing off "trying" to release ICS, now they have another hurdle to get over. I dont even care anymore. Hell, I have been looking at buying another samsung moment just to have boring again.

I own a Samsung Galaxy SII T-989 and, because I come from the "Windows" side rather than Linux or Apple, I would like to be able to completely wipe out the Gingerbred ROM that came with the phone and install a "cooked" ROM based on Windows Mobile 7 or, at least Windows Mobile 6.5.
I am hoping that, all those great developers connected to this site and spending so much time on cooking roms and rooting android phones, maybe one day they would look into this project that will become, I am sure, the greatest challenge, the pinnacle of all great things ever accomplished and recorded on this amazing forum.
Would be cool to dual boot like the HD2 days. But TBH Sui, we barely have any devs for anroid let alone start a whole new can of worms with WP7. Like the idea though.... +1

Good Point Kallkti, but soon it will. I was at a mircosoft event and we will see an update in a few months to support it. In theory couldnt we just use one core like ....idk the original froyo/GB code, and keep the second core sleeping. I never wrote kernel code im only asking
lol we dont even have a working CM7 or Miui...yet you want this?! i dont think it'll ever happen
GS2 doesn't meet hardware requirements for 6 hardware buttons and who knows what else, but seems to me if someone wants a WM7 phone, you get one.
Another thought - get an HTC HD2 - ROMs available for WM 6.5, 7 and just about every flavor of android available. A little slow (1 GHz) but satisfies all other requests.
I think it'd be awesome, been thinking about this myself. Probably damn difficult if not impossible to do at this point.
My girlfriend has a Samsung focus and it's pretty sweet. I find myself getting jealous over her phone at times especially with the zune pass lol.

They have not released any dual core wp7 phones.
Windows Phone 7 will never work unless Microsoft makes it open source. The Hd2 was lucky only because the Hd7 has the same exact internals and even that phone doesn't run Windows flawlessly.
Its like trying to put iOS or RIM's software on the GSII. It will never work and if you are lucky to get it to boot it will be extremely buggy!!!!

I just don't understand why you would want that OS on such an amazing piece of hardware. WM7 in my opinion is just too limited in the things you can do, hence the reason why people including myself rid of 6.5 from their HD2's.

Windows Phone 7.5 is a better OS than Android. Does it have as much developer support? No. But speaking strictly of the OS itself, it's much more efficient, handles battery life much better, is smoother out of the box. It just needs more love from software developers.
That said, what the OP is suggesting is never going to happen. Least of all on the Hercules/T989

Not gonna happen (December announcement).
The adaption rate of ICS is abysmal, and non-existent in Jellybean. Then you expect that manufacturers will take on another version in 5 months?
OEMs will have enough trouble dealing with the framework.jar limitation in Jellybean. Not to mention unprecedented fragmentation that we already see would be made much worse if a December announcement was given.

That isn't an Android issue, bro. As long as CDMA continues to be more secure (look how many times in history GSM has been hacked vs. CDMA), and different bands are used in different countries and carriers, this will be an issue regardless of OS. It has been like this for YEARS before Android even existed.

+1 to this , Apart from that a 8 to 9 months release cycle is needed to publish a soid code for all the masses when Jelly Bean is allmost 98% mature as mobile os . We need to think for the Android engineers also working in Google , I know a guy who works in Google and recently heard that next 1 or 2 releases will be based for stabilty rather than huge changes .
Don't care. Happy with Jelly Bean. I just want Google to stop moving so fast so we can get an established majority of 4.0+

I know that they are completely different OSs but WP has always been bragging about smoothness of their OS.
From recent reviews of Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean, i see no reason to ever complain about lagging.
For those who're talking about instability of Android, that is a personal choice of installing ****ty apps and tweaking it in the ways it wasn't
supposed to be tweaked anyway (Android has matured enough from random/"no reason" crashes).
The main thing which I'm interested in is speed and fluidity.

The customers mindset is not the same between desktop and mobile. The salespitch to devs is that EVERYONE will be buying apps like crazy..... But it didn't happen on wp7 yet, and w8 is not exactly turning people into sheeple like Apple has.
Also:

Oh well. I enjoy my dead software for the moment. Then in a few months when some new Nexus or some Nokia WP8 thing comes out I'll figure out what to pick. I've been using WP for 7 months now, I know its flaws but I still like it, good design never gets old I guess. I'm not a fanboy of any OS, when I'm bored about my phone I pick a new one, simple as that. I'm not going balls deep with any platform tho, so I don't really feel like "bragging" about what I have/"bashing" what I don't. Honestly seeing that JB is now smooth can only make me happier, especially because I'm getting a TF300 soon. Peace out.

I recently sold my Omnia 7 because I figured that it will become worthless when WP8 arrives since it can't upgrade.
Looking at the WP8 presentation, I'm deeply disappointed in MS because the main thing they're talking about is still "live tiles that no other phone
has". That's just pathetic. Resizeable tiles?.... It wasn't even MS that brought the idea... I saw it about a year ago from some guy here on xda and
now it's their main thing. Other things are just WP trying to catch up with Apple And Android with the same things they already have (wow... offline maps).
I'm too switching to Jelly Bean. Don't have enough for s3, but closely enough for used Galaxy Nexus

so, a beta release of wp8 is something you seriously consider competition for a 3 month old jellybean?
what do you expect to see to see winning over android as you stated 100% ? sales?
the portion of your comment suggesting that developers are just slobbering at the opportunity to jump from Android to wp8 sounds desperate and delusional. you might find some Nokia engineers out of work and be grudgingly apply for a seat, but I doubt that too.

I'm getting tired of those threads... I guess it's time for me to leave XDA after so many years. That forum is simply not the no. 1 place for MS/WM/WP discussion anymore. Just look at the first page, it contains about 90% Android articles. And I am really getting sick of that repetitive Android is better than everything else bullsh... I want serious discussions about that OS I am using and not those dumb comparisons.

Exactly. People should really start sticking either to the general forum or simply to the one of the OS they HAVE CHOOSEN. This kind of stuff only encourages flame wars and pointless random *****ing. I do understand that this is a critical moment for the platform, but one MUST have something better to do then cry about it all all day, let's try to be constructive, please.
My intentions when opening this thread is to see a real comparison between features and performance of WP (no matter which version) and Android Jelly Bean.
Sorry if I started another flame thread.
I doesn't matter if its 7.5 or 7.8. MS was always talking about smoothness of their OS, but Jelly Bean responded with Project Butter.
What is MSs response to that?

Not going to happen, sorry. RT is entirely different. I believed the same thing until I researched it.

Ok, you may have a point for some devs with the rt/8 possibilities. as stated, they're both vapor ware still. will it cause developers to salivate thinking of the money to be made? dunno
so what will get the consumers minds racing, then? you need consumers to feed those devs .
mmmm, even this is off topic it seems. sorry, op, but its difficult to compare vapor to a working product.

I hate apple of sh*t!
Great video. I really hope thats not what the new ios is cause thats too lame.
But then again it should be more than enough for google to ban sales of anything using it with the way things are unfortunately happening lately.
I couldn't make it to the end of the video..looking at ios5 put me to sleep!
Apple is pathetic, they can't compete with the software that Android has become so they are trying to limit consumer choice to the almighty (POS) iPhone.

It is not a pos, it is a great phone. Android also has some great phones. But the two are great for different reasons. It is a matter of choice, and consumer choice should rule, not litigation.

If you refer to advertising and the great marketing, I agree with you, but Apple became kind of the new Nokia. If someone without a clue of technology asks me what phone they should buy, i hesitate to say Android, because it needs more effort and intelligence to set the phone up... But Nokia failed with their bad developement, so will Apple. Project Glass will whipe out smartphones & Apple
project glass?

I would have been inclined to agree with you 4 years ago...now, not so much. Android is painfully easy now. In fact, a lot of things are even easier than iOS until Apple steals more "innovations" from Android and Windows Phone for iOS 6.

- Apple - Innovation through litigation
- Apple iPhones - smartphones for dumb people
- An Apple product is like being at a great buffet but not being allowed to eat much
Some of the stuff I think to myself when I look at my buddy's 4S
Apple makes great products, they innovate and when they don't they compensate with their design, packaging, marketing and branding which is world class, appealing even sexy. Then they start dictating what you can and cannot do with their stuff, after you've paid a premium price for it, and that's where they lose me.
sammy shoulda have shown this video on court
Very nice, gotta love pointing out the obviously copied ideas. Just watch them try to patent the ideas now.
Thanks for sharing this.

So when will they patent software and method for showing notifications, with a pull down menu from a bar blah blah blah?

That's some funny stuff.. I couldn't watch the video because I was trying to catch all the one liners in the text. Lol

I'd have to disagree on this, My mom had no issues picking up a MyTouch 3g and using it. Only thing she had to get use to was using a touch screen and it took her all of 2 weeks to get use to using a touch screen. She easily setup a password, sync'd her contacts, added music, etc. and that was on android 1.6

Uuuuh, 2 huge things I can think of off the top of my head.
1. Only allowed to download Apple approved apps from the app store, no side loading.
2. Entire file system is not accessible by the user.
Just these two put up some huge barriers for people who want to do whatever they want with the hardware, and furthers the idea that they only let you do what they want you to do.

I'm very interested that they have created a deal with a hardware vendor. If I'm not mistaken this is essentially what MIUI has done with Xiaomi in China. I hope it works for CM, they have done as much for Android as Google has in some regards.
I wonder if it's HTC? I'm always rooting for them, I can't believe they're doing so poorly. Says the guy with an LG phone but still.
Probably oppo or Sony. Both of them have helped with CM and contribute more source than legally required.

I would have to tend to agree with the Readers over at Droid Life, this is NOT really good news when you consider what is more then likely going to happen when it comes to investors. Mainstream is gonna change CM, it has to for the average user.
I hope that AOKP is able to survive the fallout (so to speak) if the mainstream does bring drastic changes!
Hmm, I can see another OS for android coming on the scene now. With that in mind it could work out for the better, although that doesn't happen to often in these type of situations.
Just MO!
Open source has to financially sustain itself, look at Ubuntu attempting to get corporations involved.

I think there are some pros and cons. Ultimately I think as long as they do what they have stated they will continue to do, which is keep the software open source and develop in accordance with the Apache Licensing guidelines then I imagine it will be ok for the most part. I'm personally very excited to see CM being the default ROM loaded onto point of sale devices.
If xboxfanj is right, and oppo or Sony is the hardware partner these could be great phones. Both hardware manufacturers have made some very high quality handsets in the last year or so and appear to be the manufacturers that are kind of flying under the radar at this point.

Sounds like CM isn't going to keep everything open, based on what xplodwild is saying. They wanted to license Focal differently and keep it partially proprietary while not giving him anything even though he made the app.

Steve Kondik and Koush have told a different story. I will find the article I read where kondik said in no uncertain terms they planned to keep everything open.

All I can figure from this is that is gonna be hard for Cyanogenmod to win back the community that's supported them this entire time after alienating them like this. Ugly stuff going on behind the scenes in the community, I mean half the reason people on this site support Android as their mobile OS of choice in the first place is because of how open it is.
I look at Boxee as an example of what happens when a community supported open source project begins to make compromises for the sake of corporate partnerships. I think CM are killing themselves because their user base has no interest in a watered down ROM.

Have read this. I prefer to give then the benefit of the doubt before assuming that they have embraced evil and will do nothing more than screw everyone that they ever looked at.
Kondik has made several statements to the effect that they have no plans to close anything off. At the end of the day we will see. Until then, CM had given a LOT to the Android community and I think they have earned at least a little trust. Innocent until proven guilty after all.

Xplodwild's post certainly makes sense and he was pretty loyal to CM. He made this project to spearhead Project Nemesis. I understand that CM needs to be able to make money, but I definitely don't want that to be at the cost of user freedom and the dual-licensing seems pretty sketchy. Steve's response as grabs popcorn certainly doesn't alleviate the fears of CM taking the money and running as it were and doesn't reject Guillame's post at all. It all but confirms it. Plus, it certainly doesn't seem fair that only Steve, Ricardo, Koush, and other full-time employees are the only ones being rewarded here. Obviously, you can't pay everyone that fixes spelling mistakes in the code, but Guillame and Andrew Neal (dev of Apollo) or Nebkat (dev of Trebuchet) have made apps in their free times for nothing, which they thought was contributing to a free project, but to have others make money off of their work seems like insanity to me.
Its time to start changing from cm ... If it wasn't for all the devs out their they wouldn't b in the position they are in to profit and claim that hey once u help us we get to do what we want and if u don't like it take a hike ... I'm all for cm expanding into bigger and better but not at the exspense of the people who made them and got them to the status they have ....
