hello all had my desire for a good few months now, totally clean unbranded device. Now after quietly perusing these forums for a while i feel the next best thing i could do is flash it with a custom rom, i am drawn towards leedroid 2.3c, however i would like some advice first from the experts....All You.
is leeddroid a good stable rom with all the feature that i currently have on a stock desire?
what is the simplest way to flash?
do i have to do anything prior to a flash? ie backup anything, or make a backup of my stock system? if so how? i have xp in iphones and nothing needed to be done there just plug in and flash?
i need a simple guide
many thanks
Before you do anything, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the 'Software version' number and post it up on here. We'll go from there...
android version 2.2
baseband version 32.49.00.32u_5.11.05.27
software number 2.29.405.5
Right, awesome. You're totally unbranded so that's a good thing!!
First thing, download the RUU for that ROM so you can go back to stock should you need to. Get it from:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
If that link fails to download then get it from:
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...Y-6AY_5A3EXnBSZIg&sig2=ToMSUjUY0tdbmxGYNI13-w
Or
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...cZlrId8Dkc9IAPJsg&sig2=upnnZhtKGWqyen3hhAeVvA
After that you can look at rooting the phone. I just re-rooted my phone on 2.29.405.5 using unrEVOked 3.31 and it work fine. You can get it here:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Once rooted, go look at the different ROMs available and take you're pick!!
There you go about rooting the phone from EddyOS.
Leedroid is a newbie friendly rom, it is stable, fast (faster than the original), has relatively better battery life than the original and everything is working, not to mention, it is also a Sense rom, just like your original rom.
So, yes! Leedroid is a good pick to start.
Note:
---- IMPORTANT----
1. The first thing you might want to do directly right after rooting is to create a nanddroid bckup and copy the bckup into your pc directly after creating it.. Do it before flashing, formatting, creating partition, or anything else.
---------END----------------
2. You might also need a card reader and a software such as partition wizard, gparted, or similar to create an EXT partition in your SD Card since most of the custom roms will need it. Create the EXT partition before flashing.
brilliant thanks for the links and tips, is there any particulat software i need to perform this "create a nanddroid bckup"
Once rooted the custom recovery has the nandroid function in it
Have a read of this, should help explain things:
http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting.html
Hey eddyos many thanks for taking the time to answer.
now i take it i do not need to make a gold card as my phone is unbranded, so my steps to take are :-
a. root...using unrevoked
b. nandroid backup...using clockworkmod recovery supplied with unrevoked
c. flash whatever rom i choose.
now once i have done step b. do i store this backup on my pc? if so whats it gonna be called and where will it be on the desire
in order to flash a rom, where do i put the rom i download to flash to the htc? on the memoery card?
once i have done c i am no longer able to get stock updates.
once i have done c do i need to set up anything so my phone can make calls or access the internet etc, or does it behave like a new phone out the box and you whack in the info it asks for ie google account stuff.
once again many thanks
The Nandroid is stored on your SD card. You can make a backup of this on your PC should you wish.
Once rooted you can no longer get OTA updates so you'd need to update your ROM as (and if) the dev does so
You download the ROM file and stick it anywhere on the SD card as you can browse for the ZIP in recovery.
The phone should go through a setup and automatically set the APN but if not you can manually add it using the operator details on their website
cool many thanks m8 for your time, now its just down to me to select a rom.
m last bit of info i need for now is looking in the android development bit there are various roms etc, some say rom, froyo sense, aosp kernal etc. been a novice/virgin i have no idea what these titles mean, i assume i should just stick to anything that has rom next to it?
is anyone able to reccomend a beginers rom that i can try out
? whats this all about?
create an EXT partition in your SD Card since most of the custom roms will need it. Create the EXT partition before flashing.
how big should the partition be? 512mb
As it has been said before Leedroid is a very good start. The latest version should be the Leedroid 2.3c.
Try that one out and play a little while before trying to flash other ROMs.
EXT partition is needed for A2SD/A2SD+ ROMs (do not play around with D2EXT/D2SD at the moment, you are not ready yet for this).
A2SD means Apps to SD, means more apps can be installed since they don't go to your very limited internal memory.
Make 2 partitions on your SD card but be sure to copy everything inside the SD card to your PC just to be sure before making arrangement for those partitions.
First create a FAT32 partition for your datas ( such as music, videos, etc.) as the first partition, set it as primary and then create a 512-2GB EXT2/3/4 (I recommend1GB EXT 2 or 3 at the moment) as the second partition, set it as primary.
Be sure to have the EXT partition after the FAT32.
Windows can only see the first partition, that is where you are going to put bck all the files you have copied from the SD card before making all of those partitions.
Interesting thread as I am considering doing the same. Main reason for me is the clash between HTC Sense and the bluetooth stack not allowing for a bluetooth keyboard. Any particular rom recommendations for this - Leedroid, Cyanogen?

FroYo = Android 2.2 (what you're currently on)
Gingerbread = Android 2.3
AOSP = Android Open Source Project )ROM built from the source code and now ported from another device)
As for EXT, I have a 1GB (1024MB) one and it serves me well
i am using leedroid for sometime now 512 MB EXT3-4 partition is more than enough i have 110 apps installed and still have 351MB free
once again many thanks for the replies.
what is the simplest prog to use to create the partitions? scrap that just used minitool partition magic i have an old 1gig card am gonna try will that be ok?
i have a fat32 partition size 533mb set as primary and a 362mb ext3 partition does it matter if the fat32 primary partition has a name?
looking at leedroid i think i need to install 2.3b before i can install the latest 2.3c
You can either do it in the recovery (I use Amon RA as mine but I think CWM does it too now). Otherwise you're better off downloading a GParted Live CD, boot your PC from that and then partition the card
When you're rooting Desire, have a look at good ol' turkeh's guide. Not only you have an excellent root tutorial, but you also learn how to properly flash ROMs, how to create and restore a system backup, how to backup apps, how to create ext partitions to enable app2sd and how to unroot the phone in case you need your warranty back.
Note: when performing the s-ff process (for data2sd), read carefully what it says and be aware that it can brick your phone if not done properly.
Turkey's guide is OK but is out of date somewhat, could do with updating to include the newer versions on unrEVOked
Hello guys
I´m new here and also quite new to the custom rom scene.
You can skip my story if you want. The questions are below
I bought a Desire (bravo Amoled) around a year ago with a T-mobile Branding.
At this time the actual android version was 2.1 Eclair. Later tehre was 2.2 Froyo out. Becaus i didn´t wanted to wait for the T-mobile update I debranded my phone so get the open 2.2 Froyo update.
I was so happy Froyo had the App2SD function, because now i can intall more apps then before. But with all the updates for google maps, google mail, facebook apps...and user that have to stay on phone memory and the user apps moved to SD still storing data on the internal memory and the dalvik cache i soon again had space problems. Still i can´t install all apps i like.
So lived with this problem not aware of a solution till 2-3 weeks ago, where i finally rooted my phone and installed a custom Rom with A2SD+.
Now I have a rooted, S-OFF phone with Insertcoin V49 A2SD+ Version. And i thought there would be no more space problems, because the dalvik cache and all apps are now on the fake internal memory (1,5 GB ext3). But NO, there are still apps storing stuff on the real internal memory. At last i had problems to move Plants vs. Zombies (~70MB) from SD (Froyoinstall) to the ext, because the internal mem hadn´t enough space and it wouldn´t let me move.
Next step CM7 Hboot?
So here are some questions to understand how that works.
1. When i install a CM7 Hboot, the data partition (internal memory) will be bigger, yes? Means there will be almost double space for app DATAs?
2. The system partition, where the actual ROM is stored and booted is smaller?
2a. But that means some parts of the ROM need to be moved to the SD?
2b. Doesn´t this make the entire phone slower? Because reading from the SD card is slower then from nand? (8GB Class4)
2c. Is there higher power consumtion because of constantly SD access?
3. The cache partition is dramatically decreased to 5 MB. What is ist used for and will there any diadvantages because of the small size?
4. What happens with the Dalvik? Where is ist stored?
5. Does A2SD+ still work with the CM7 insertcoin version? (big ext 3 fake internal memory) or only Froyo A2SD with the bigger real internal memory?
6. How do people get 160-180 free RAM? I have around 100-110 MB.
So my goal is to get as much space available for user apps and getting a faster device (or at least dont get a slower one)
Hope someone read all my questions and can give me clarity..
Thanks in advance

Hi beegee,
I'm new to this myself, so not an expert, but I just flashed the CM7r2 hboot myself and will help where I can. Note, I am using CyanogenMod7, not InsertCoin.
1. Yes, the system and cache partitions used by the phone ROM are decreased substantially, system decreases from 250MB to 145MB and cache from 40MB to 5MB. This extra space is then added to the internal data partition for your apps and games. I only have a few apps installed at the moment and my data partition is 287MB total, 21MB used, 266MB free space.
2. Yes, see above.
2a. No, the ROM only requires 145MB, none of it is stored on the sdcard.
3. I'm sure the cache must be a fixed size. Mine (with CyanogenMod7) has remained at 4MB since install so a 5MB partition is large enough.
4. I store dalvik-cache on the ext3 partition of my sdcard as you are doing now. If you moved it back to the phone memory it would be stored in the data partition.
5. I use a version of A2SD with the CM7 hboot and it works fine.
6. I've not used insertcoin but as I said in the first answer I have 287MB data partition in my phone now. This is due to using the CM7 hboot.
Hope this helps,
Steve
The larger cache size from the stock Hboot is meant for OTA updates so we have no use for that. It's also used to flash radio images from recovery. If your cache is too small, like it is in the CM7 and Oxygen Hboots, you will need to flash the radio via fastboot but you don't really need to worry about flashing radio's anyways..can look into that later if you want.
Thanks for the answers by now.
What i found out:
The Insertcoin is a Sense enabled rom. The zip of the Rom is about 288 Meg big. Its not an AOSP like Cyanogen, which is so sleek to fit completely in the smaller system partition. I extracted both Insertcoin A2SD and CM7 zips and found that they have a sdext folder. On the cm7 version it is 365 Meg and on the a2sd+ 80 Meg big. So both versions install files on the external partition.
Only open question now is if the CM7 version supports A2SD+
Edit: Obviously the CM7 version has no A2SD+
Also the the new bigger system partition only has ~ 80 Meg free after first boot ?!
Hello. I haven't installed, yet a custom ROM (I'm still on Rooted Stock), but documented a little to understand even better what each ROM does.
1. I saw that you wanted a very fast ROM, the only ones that are really fast are the AOSP ROM's since they are in the most minimalistic form possible --> ~150MB
2. You should also take in consideration that a small cache partition may slow down some games. This was tested and problems appeared at some games, which use some improved graphics. The games also store there some of the "graphics files"? and since the partition is too small, it has to constanly read/write/delete.
3. CM7 version supports A2SD+: you should read the whole thread from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=917570. It explains all. As I have read some of it two things popped-up:
-CyanogenMod do not officially support a2sd, i'm working on it because desire (not only) desperatly need it (cutted down Firerat script)
-Other a2sd can be used, this is just the easiest way: use recovery to partition your SD then install cm7_legacy_a2sd_rX-signed.zip
Hope this helps you.

Hello
Thanks for the infos. I know the ASOP roms are faster, but i don´t want to miss the Sense UI.
To 3. I think there was a misunderstanding. When is say CM7 i dont mean the rom "CyanogenMod7" but the CM7 Hboot Version of Insertcoin rom.
I just tried to postinstall a2sd via http://www.darktremor.info/files/a2sd/dtapps2sd-2.7.5.3-beta04-signed.zip
But after installation in recovery, the phone wont boot Insertcoin. Stuck at Alpharev Bootstreen now.

Presumably the HBOOT and Radio partitions are the same size whichever HBOOT you use, and Radio immediately follows HBOOT. Otherwise you would have to flash the Radio if you changed he partition map by (eg) going from Stock to CM7.

If you've done a nandroid back-up before trying to flash the A2SD+ scripts (which is advised!!!) you should go back to recovery and restore it. You should go back to your InsertCoin again and try the steps once again. Maybe you did something wrong or got a wrong file.

No, i didn´t made a nandroid backup, because ist was a new Insertcoin CM7 install. No personal data to lose.
I just wiped and made a new install. Now i have 199 Meg internal memory free.
Edit: After installing DT A2SD in recovery again, the phone is again stuck at Alpharev splash What now?
Edit2: After installing the Rom over without wipe, Insertcoin boots normaly. But i encountered, force reboots when installing any app.
So i made a new fresh isntall.
Conclusion: Insertcoin uses my Ext4 for its Data. But will not use it as fake internal memory. My Ext4 is ~1,5 GB big. Insertcoin uses 600 MB from it and the leftover 900 MB are wastetd, because no one uses it.
Edit 3: Insertcoin doesnt like Ext4. Everytime i tried to install Astro File Manager fom Market the phone rebootet. No problem with Ext3
Hey guys! Im totaly new to this and am not really sure that ive postet this in the right forum section, but i'll give it a go anyways!
I've rooted my Desire, and the tutorial i followed did ofcourse not mention that i really should grab a backup of the default rom, so i didnt back up.
I installed CyanogenMod, but i didnt like it (due to the fact that it doesnt have the sense widgets) so i tried to find a Sense Gingerbread rom to use, so i installed this:
RCMix S v2.0
That one worked rather horribly, or i can go so far tosay that it didnt work at all. My phone stucks all the time, and ive havent gotten past the htc setup yet.
So basicly what i need is someone to point me in the right direction, i need a good ROM that is like the original HTC Sense for Desire, but with gingerbread.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Nymo.
If you want a ROM with SENSE, LeeDroid, of course !

RADIO
Is a software part of firmware (rom), this manage the phone network (3G/2G) for calls and internet connections. Each radio has features that make the consumer less appropriate according to the telephone operator (orange / vodafone / wind / plus), which uses a different frequency, if a particular radio set is better for some frequencies, for example -75 dBm and 19asu (drawer -> setting -> battery -> network) with certain radio I have a better battery performance compared to other operating frequencies higher. If you have «branded phones», you have at default better radio that «not branded phones» becouse ruu of «branded phone» have different radio of «stock ruu» for wwe.

Partitioning memorycard means partition your sd card. You can do this from recovery.
And next time use the search. Nearly all questions like these are already answered.
I was stuck at an airport for like 6 hours, so belive me ive searched alot.
Which one do i use, the LeeDrOiD A2SD++ Edition or the LeeDrOiD Data++ Edition??
EDIT: I have decided to postpone my change of ROM untill i recieve my 16gb memorycard. I Only have a lousy slow 2gb card atm.
stuck on pink light
i installed startburst froyo on my htc desire. but when i restart my phone for data2sd. it stuck on pink light. i wait around an hour but nothing happened. i create 2 partition before installing. 1st fat32(3gb) and ext4(1gb) both are primary. now what to do

Both versions have their dis-/advantages. Just try.
Rom
Well there is more to root to it. If you read carefully through the forum you will find everything there but I will try to sum it up here.
First you root. That gives you a lot more permissions on your phone ( like installing custom Rom's) but that is that. Your phone still has the stock (factory) hboot meaning that the space for the system and apps is not changed. This is probably what got you into trouble. You may have installed a Rom that is not compatible with the stock partition of the phone. What you now have to do is change this partition acording to the Rom you want to install. There are two options:
1. extend your phone's internal memory to the SD card ( there are guides on the forum on how to create a EXT3 partition on your SD) and go with a A2SD type Rom ( this type of Rom installs the apps to that EXT3 partytion on the SD card ). I chose this option and I would recomend LEEDroid or Insertcoin Rom's as they both have sense and work like a charm ( I prefer InsertCoin because with LeeDroid I have some issues as I reject some calls when I take the phone out of my pocket)
2. change the internal partition of your phone and instal a custom HBoot. For this you got to be S-OFF ( clear another type of security built in by HTC, this is higher than root) and you can find guides for that here. Then you can install a CM7 Rom
But you should take the first route if you are a begginer since is not as dangerous.
If nothing works for you, find a Stock Rooted Rom and install it. This won't cancel your root but you go back to the factory status of your phone. You can install anytime another custom rom, after you find out more.
Thanks guys!
So i should wait for my new memorycard, considered i just simply cant change the memcard beacuse the apps (and part of the os?) are stored there, or can i just copypasta them onto the new card, after ive created the partition on that card too?
Also, this radio thing. Do i have to figure this out before i install a new rom?
Oh, and btw: I Have decided to go with the A2SD++ version.

Hi.
You must flash the radio before flashing the new ROM, or there will be conflicts.
How To Flash Radio:
Code:
1. Go into recovery
2. Choose install zip from sd
3. Choose zip from sd
4. Confirm
5. Reboot
OR through fastboot command, if you know how to use it:
Code:
fastboot flash radio c:\radio.img
assuming radio.img is on C:

What about this thing?
Success!
Successfully flashed to LeeDroid AP2SD++ today, couldnt wait for my new memory card lol.
I had a lot of trouble with creating the EXT3 partition, i managed to create the partition with Minitool partition manager (something like that, cant remember the name), but it got the E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 error all the time.
What i did was just install Cyanogenmod and use ROM manager to create the partition. It only created a 512mb partition (1gb is recomended for leedroid) but it works fine.
The radio flashing went really smooth, no problems there!
Thanks for the help guys, much apreaciated!
Still, i havent gotten the answer bout the new memorycard thing. When i get the new memorycard, do i have to to a new installation? Or can i just backup the ext3 partition and copy it over to the new ext3 partition on the new card?

Greetings,
I've just given cyanogenmod10 a try, after 2 years of having the same 2.3 rom.
All is going well, but even after 'installing' a2sd, I only have 150mb of app space. Needless to say, after 5 apps, it's full.
Is this normal? I had tons and tons of apps with my previous rom.
Thanks in advance!
Install m2sd, and move dalvik to sd.
You should ext3/ext4 partition on sd card. The rom will use that for phone apps. Btw even after that you will still see internal ram as 147m, but don't worry a2sd will use ext partition for apps and you can install many apps without any issue of memory.
Same rom working great for me
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Thanks for the replies!
I'm a bit stuck now as there is no rom installed on my phone and my sd card is empty. But I'll put a rom on my sd card tonight with another phone so I should be ok for that.
My problem still remains though.
I can't get a 1gb partition. I have tried external methods with my pc: partition wizard, easeus partition and those 2 can indeed partition my sd card, but when I unplug the usb cable, my phone says the card is damaged and needs to do a full format. After that my partition is gone.
The other method I used was to get s-off, so I could get the recovery of 4EXT. I tried to switch s-off with revoked, but I couldn't use that as my hboot is 0.80.x.x. So I had to try with alpharev (I used both cd and usb) but it was stuck at the 3rd step, I left the process running for 5 hours and there was nothing changed.
So here I am, clueless about what to do because if I can't get a partition I can't get a2sd and if I can't get that I can only install 2 programs, which is quite rediculous.
Please, what is there left for me to do?
edit: I'm going to put a 2.2 froyo rom on it and see if I can try again with alpharev. I read somewhere alpharev isn't always working with certain roms.
Update: flashing a froyo 2.2 rom before letting alpharev run did the trick, my phone is now s-off. Going to try to get my full sd card back as I seem to be missing 500 mb.
Update 2: with 4EXT i could format my hidden ext partition and make a new one of 1gb. After that the a2sd worked!
So problem solved, thanks for reading!
Hi,
I cannot find an answer for my problem. I have rooted Desire. I have installed 10 different ROMs on 2 different sd cards and my phone is regularly freezing at least twice per day. Phone dos not answer for calls, screen is black and I cannot switch it on, I have to remove battery. It happens that it freezes 5 or more times per day. It is really annoying. I have no idea why it happens. Freezing is wierd because the screen is black and not responsive but e.g. radio is still playing. First I thought it is ROM's fault so installed few of them. Then I changed sd card but this also didn't help. I think the problem may be in storing apps in sd card because if there is no apps installed the phone is working fine.
Please correct me if I am wrong. Is it possible to install custom Sense ROM on e.g. CM7r2 so there is more space for apps but without sd-ext partition? I have tried to do it with one custom ROM but it did not even start. So how to remove/disable/switch off app2sd, data2sd or int2sd from custom ROMs? Or is there a CM7r2 ROM that is not using sd card for apps storing? I don't want to return to stock hboot and stock system because then I have too little space for apps (147M) but with CM7r2 hboot (287M) should be enough.
I am not sure if my thinking is correct, I will appreciate any help. Maybe there is another solution for freezing system problem?
Piotr
My phone now:
Recovery: 4ext
S-Off, CM7r2
Radio: 5.17.05.23
hboot 6.93.1002
Card: 8GB class 10
You may be having a faulty sd-ext partition. How did you partition your sd-card?
Any AOSP GB rok should fit in the cm7r2 hboot. Just delete a2sd scripts from the system>etc>init.d folder, and you shouldn't have problems.

Thanks. I partitioned sd card using linux, alligment is checked. Should i partition it using 4ext recovery? does INT2SD has scripts in the same folder? if I remove sd-ext partition totaly will android still work?
Roms with int2sd won't work without an ext partition.
And yes, follow the guide in my sig for a correct partition.
It works now!
Before I was always using Sense ROMs and all of them were freezing on my phone. I have done sd card partitioning again using your guide and I have installed system you use MildWild.Since I installed it I didn't have any problems! Thank you very much. I don't know if it is partitioning or new system that helped but most important is that works fast and stable for 2 days now with all my apps installed!
This is great I don't remember when was the last time my phone was working for 2 days in a row without freezing and taking battery off! So much better now
Thanks!!
No problem.
Installing CM7/r2 HBOOT
This is actually realy simple,
Before you do anything, Backup everything PLEASE.
This will erase your current rom, so you have to install it again.
go to alpharev.nl and scroll down till you see Bravo CM7 r2. Click on Download. Not the regular Download,
But the download after that. it's called : PB99IMG_cm7r2. Download that, and remove the _cm7r2 text. So
that the file is named PB99IMG.
Put your SD Card into your computer, and take this file ( PB99IMG) onto your SD card.Boot into the bootloader, ( By pressing Volume down + Power ) and wait. it will say something like : '' Would you like to update? '' Volume up for ''yes'' Volume down for ''no'' .
do ''yes'' . After that , it will ask you to reboot. You want to do that.
After that, i faced the problem that 4EXT Recovery didn't work. Solution: Go again into bootloader, and select clear storage.
