It was requested so I offered and made a video showing boot up, and general usage in the newly released CM9 RC1. It is running the stock CM9 kernel, not HONOs kernel. It is fresh, 3rd boot after flashing. It is rock stable so far with no issues since flash. If you are considering using it as a daily driver, I would say go for it!
If you have any questions about it, just ask and I will try my best to answer accordingly.
And NOW, the video

p.s. excuse the rotation, there is supposed to be a fixed one on my channel soon but Im not sure when it will pop up.

What about battery?Better?

Battery
For me, its pretty decent. I dont constantly run 4g and usually have it disabled altogether because Im on wifi pretty much everywhere. I leave wifi on all the time and gps too. When i flashed it yesterday at approximately 2:30 pm local time, It was at 71%. I did not charge it and used it fairly minimally(around 20 mins of gaming, some wifi browsing, a handful of calls, playing with it while shooting the video, and a couple text messages) and i started charging it at 11am today with 35% left. Is it better than gingerbread? definitely. I havent tried HONOs new v4 kernel though. Of course YMMV.
oh, and btw for those wondering, I havent had any issues at all since flashing. No crashes, no force closes, and everything is smooth and buttery.
Also, if there is anyone who would like to see something specific on video, I could do another if necessary. I tried to get the basic out of the box experience into that one.
I've been using it since it came out on the 26th as well. Maybe it's a placebo effect... But it seems so much smoother and with no force closes.... But... That could also be because I did a full wipe when I installed... And I haven't done that since installing the first nightly... Bottom line... I loving it. No issues so far. Also thanks for the video.

And I agree with your sentiments exactly. No issues for me and extremely smooth. I see no reason yet why this shouldn't be daily driver ready.
oh well if you dont mind, can you do a video of web browsing, showing youtube, playing flash videos, and heavy gaming. lol i know its alot but i can either get this phone or the exhilarate, and i just wanna know if this phone is worth getting

I will see what I can do but it wont happen today since im already at work. Probably tomorrow sometime. Everything is really smooth though, im not sure what you expect to see...
Oh and an update on battery. I know that this is only a short term test but in the last 2.5 hours since i unplugged, i have made 1 phone call, had wifi on the whole time, and done a few texts. Im still at 100 percent. I used to be at 95 or less by now...

i just switched from the epic 4g to the evo (tried for 30 days, but the pentile matrix was a deal breaker). I flashed myn's rom. and netarchy's latest stable kernel. 4.3.1 -conservative, screen off profile too.
is it supposed to be this slow? I had to remove all the animations just to bear.
is it supposed to be so choppy?
why can't websites load quick enough? is it the flash?
the text is so blurry, is there a sharper font?
the battery? wtf. if i put it to sleep, it's ok. but with the screen on (relatively light to medium use) it won't last the day.
how do i watch videos?
am i missing somethings?

I dont know what you're talking about. I'm running the plain myn with the kernel he provides and it's fast as hell and stable. Maybe the kernel u installed is causing problems.
Try doing a full wipe and reflashing with whatever he provides.
As far as the internet goes, there is a problem with the hosts file that myn has in rls5. Download ad-free from the market, click Revert, then download the newest host files. That will fix your slow internet.
Sounds like something is jacked with your flash of the rom. Did you download rls5? What radios do you have? RLS5 is blazing fast.

i actually did try that, but the battery was draining more that i liked. it probably was something that i did. I will try trouble-shooting later. Thanks alot though.
Sounds like somethin in your setup is acting up...
I've tried 3 different ROMs (CM6 currently) and havent ever had "bad" battery life... and I do use my phone, have email/FB/wether updating hourly and I check other Email, news, etc all the time... watch a video here and there.... My battery never lasts less than a day...
I'd say just wipe everything and try another ROM/kernel... hopefully that'll help
Just like everyone says wipe your cache & Dalvik. Matter fact do like i do if your running clockwork wipe it 2x or 3x's. Get Rom Manager and and update your clockwork to the latest 3.0.0.2 <<--i think thats it.
Wipe and re flash should solve your problem. I run Myns Rls5 and its flawless...
I was only on Myn for a day, but I didn't have any problems with it. I set up my friends on it though and he's been using it for the past few weeks with no speed or lag issues.
I have had the problems you describe on a few different ROMs if I'm using a kernel that doesn't play well with the phone/ROM. I would play with different kernels until you get a setup that works.
Hope that helps.
If your using Set CPU make sure is not throttled way down because this will lag and freeze your phone up. Kernel is probably making things worse as well.

I'll confirm this. I got rid of set cpu all together. battery life is just fine. get to about 10-15% by the time i charge at night.
I just want to say that compared to the Epic the EVO screen is crap. You are going to have to deal with that. It will never be as good of a picture. As for battery life this is a known issue. Battery life on the Evo is terrible. There are certain tweaks and settings that will work to where you can get the whole day out of your phone. Just try different kernels, settings and what not until you figure out what works for your phone. Believe it or not all Evo's are a little different and what works for one may not work for yours. May I also suggest purchasing an extended battery. You can find cheap ones on ebay for around $10. These will give you better battery life. Enjoy the Evo bro and don't worry you will find out what works best for your phone. Just come here and read everyday and try new things and sooner or later you will be rocking the Evo just the way you want it.
I know that CM7 is a great rom, but are there any cons or known bugs in everyday usage?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA Premium App
It's stable and has a good battery life, I haven't encountered any bugs and judging by the change log RC1 has everything solved except 720p recording which isn't even a stock feature but an improvement.
I'm curious also, so you're saying every feature that works on stock (minus motoblur) will also work as it should (or better) under CM7 ?
There's nothing like no wi-fi or gps not working or anything at all ?

There are plenty of dialers on the market. I opted for Dialer One, though it's quite an overkill, all the options it has. Ray Dialer is cool as well, a bit lighter and faster. Both have T9 and are free even.
Main bug is flicker when recording video... jumps when playing back as well.
But it's got awesome battery life and speed!

A very good thread!
So far, we always heard about pros on CM7. Now, we can get opposite info in one thread. It's good for developer and user. Long live to CM7!
It's better than the stock roms in every way.
My quadrant on UK stock 2.2 was 900. On CM7 it's 2200
Gallery (4 photos then crash, no picasa albums), facebook (did not sync properly) and unexpected 100% processor usage -> battery drain are other reasons to ditch stock roms and go fo CM7.
The defy is a fantastic phone, once you take the motorola software off it!

its best
thx very much Quarx
i hope Quarx make cm7 for atrix too
i recently installed rc1 and the only bug ive noticed is laggy video recording (playback is flawless - not the laggy recorded one - even in hd). and when booting in android, launcherpro force closes, but after a restart it works fine. cm7 is really a superb rom, would never go back motos ****ty sw...

Aside from poor camera and video recording performance, CM7 is better in every way than moto's ROM. I'm sure quarx and co. will fix those bugs real soon.
CM7 is the best ROM running under Android 2.3.4 but it's main problem is the battery consumption (it's just draining two, even three times faster than Froyo) In other every aspect, it's just awesome.
This is why I get twitchy about installing anything.
Person A says ' oh the battery life is awesome'
Person B says 'its got a big battery problem'
Who to believe....
Been using CM7 for more than a month already I think. I started with Beta6. Currently on a nightly earlier than RC1. Only a few things that I noticed that are not so good.
- Camera quality is not as good
- Video camera recording skips frames
It seems like most issues are with the camera. Speed is good with CM7.
I noticed that if battery life is not as good all that is needed is to check that you have the correct baseband set and to reboot the phone if you already have the correct baseband.
I have never had any issues with wifi or 3g so far. GPS I dont really use.
Hope that helps
Caveat emptor: It makes your Defy runs faster and more updated and deny you the opportunity to explain to your spouse the rationale of buying a new phone every 12-month.
Man, isn't that hideous?
Hmm no one else reported any GPS issue, so I guess it's just me. It's not able to find and lock my position. Will have to look into it. Currently on Beta 6

mine battery life is great
if u set network on 2g
use auto task killer
and display time out to 15 sec
and with normal use . battery use about 2.5 - 3 days for mine
The bugs I found are the auto brightness not stable & video recording can't turn on the flash light, others all perfect for me,including battery life(same as Froyo) & GPS locked within 10s under clear sky
*I am using full sbf from the official Froyo 2.2 SEA18,just flash the RC1 & gapps then good to go
You know, I just don't get it.. I see some folks getting 4.5+ hours of screen on time which I can get from Calkulins EL29, but I am lucky to get over 2 hours of screen on time on ANY ICS ROM.. Folks say it must be rogue apps that are causing wakelocks. My question is why do wakelocks seem to be so rampant on ICS, yet on EL29 I had no issues? I reinstall the same apps with every ROM installation. Same settings, no additional apps, no less apps than what I had on the last ROM. So I have to ask, what gives? Is this purely an optimization problem on the software to hardware end of things that varies by device? Bad luck? ect?

Are you restoring data? that can have issues. Also some of the apps you use might not work the best on ICS. I would say install them 1 and a time and see when you battery drops. I can easily go all day with ICS

I am, yeah. Honestly I hardly use most of the apps on my phone. I use Opera, stock sms app, navigation sometimes, I use Mr. number which is a call blocking program, the stock music app and youtube. Pretty basic stuff really, I have a few other apps but rarely if ever open them.
Im not a dev or anything, so my understanding of this stuff is limited.
What would Samsung do to fix battery life that the devs on this board can't? srs question

They could do what HTC did with their latest phone and install an auto task killer which kills running apps. I hope they don't because I was reading in the one x forums that if you just switch apps real quick say from the internet to messaging and try to go back to the internet 20 seconds later it has been closed and reopening it takes you to the homepage. that's one idea

Probably ICS is not reading screen on time right. They last almost the same to me but ya ICS screen time is half of gingerbread but I've used them the same amount, I do the same thing everyday at work so my usage of the phone is always almost the same.

and the specific reasons for it !
stock V11a rom - rooted
i am using it because it actually has decent battery life (unlike the v10 series) and because i am waiting for tuesday to put Cyano on it.
I would also like to see the different reasons for using particular roms, good thread idea
@ aaki_rocker what is your rom and why?
For me lol.. depend on what i work on.. right now i use cm-9-20120629-UNOFFICIAL-p930 (my compiled CM9 test build)
CM9 RC1. Running like gravy since it launched. Its fast, smooth, and offers pretty sweet battery life even without HONOs kernel. Oh, and many of the things they released a couple days ago at the Google IO conference work on ICS(google chrome for android is ICS+ only).
Just a few of the perks of running a CM9 rom.
im using hono! not with hono kernel since max keep goin down to 100mhz

Stock gingerbread ROM with HONO's kernel for me! CM9 just isn't as smooth for me, and while the ICS leak is as smooth (if not a smidge smoother than GB stock), the screen digitizer driver seems to not be perfectly calibrated (most noticeable and annoying when using swype or other "dragging/drawing" apps) on the ICS leak, AND it seems in ICS they screwed with the way zooming on images is handled.
1.) First, when web browsing, text doesn't auto align like it used to in GB, regardless of browser (with the exception of Opera, but I don't really like that browser very much)
2.) In email apps which DO allow pinch to zoom on emails with lots of images (such as touchdown and K-9), you can't seem to zoom out anymore in ICS when you could in gingerbread, so you're forced to have to slide around a ginormous email image to take a look at it rather than zoom out entirely and get an overview.
If anyone else knows of an email app that allows pinch to zoom to zoom OUT of a large email far enough to get a complete page overview in ICS, let me know. (I'm aware K-9 and touchdown still allow the zoom function, but they seem to cap how far you can zoom out in ICS far below getting a full image, when this isn't the case for these programs in gingerbread. Some strange global setting in ICS, it seems...)

Thanks for the suggestion!
I gave it a shot. Unfortunately, it also won't allow zooming out on emails if installed on ics even though when it's installed on gingerbread, it zooms out just fine. It's definitely a systemic issue on all ics-based roms for all phones. People have been complaining about it for all ics phones, not just the Nitro. Oh well. Till they change that, I'm sticking with gingerbread! Because of what I work with, tons of my emails are ginormous, and I need to be able to get a full overview for it to be useful. I don't have any major qualms with gingerbread anyway. Honestly, I just wanted to get rid of the color banding, but that'll just have to wait =P

I've had my galaxy nexus for a while and i've put up with the slow response and lag up until now. Most of my apps take forever to use and other just don't even work anymore because there's too much lag. If i even have more than 1 or 2 apps opened, my phone (for whatever reason) just can't handle it, heats up like crazy, and just drains so much battery that I have to take out my battery and wait for a few minutes just so to let it cool down and reset it.
I've tried a few of the better options which is to root my device, get slimkat android 4.4.4 (which kind of worked), and get lagfix premium along with greenify. But after all of that and trying a few other options, my phone is still as slow and laggy as ever. what else is there that i can do? If I need to provide any other information on my phone, let me know and I will reply.
So just to clarify, when use installed your roms you did a full clean wipe, yes?

so you already tried the slimrom, that's normally my solution to phones being slow I personally use ziyan's cm 12.1 beta builds and for me they are really fast and pretty reliable, they've for just a few minor issues I don't mind, maybe that's something for you to consider
