I have heard you can brick your phone by trying to do a factory reset in cm9s recovery so how would I go about doing this?
Flash el29 cwm via Odin, do your needed wiping, then flash back the rom you were on or one that u want.

Thanks, that's what I figured.

No, in order to return to stock you would have to flash a stock, non-rooted rom/kernel.

No, A factory reset will only wipe Data/cache etc..
I've honestly never unrooted a phone so if that is your goal You'd probably have to look through the dev forum a bit to figure it out.
If you were just wondering about the factory reset, then we're good.
*note* Don't use RoM manager for wiping/factory reset if you are on an ICS RoM.
To unroot Odin a stock unrooted tar and profit, well nonprofit cuz ur phone won't be rooted anymore, check the stickies in the dev section for the tar file and the download for Odin and the drivers if u don't already have them. A factory reset will only return your rom to the condition it was in right after flashing it, it will erase all user data/settings and start your rom fresh.

how do i get the phone to not bootloop, i did everything right! i just got into stock recovery and did a reset and still nothing
try wiping cache and dalvik
just reinstalling a custom clockworkmod n go but to being rooted
Every time I've gone back to stock, unrooted, I get a bootloop. Best bet is once you flash back to stock, wipe cache/dalvik, reboot to recovery, wipe cache/dalvik again and reboot. This works for me and I only stumbled upon it whilst troubleshooting a bootloop at work, away from my puter. Good luck!
Boot into recovery and do a factory reset. Only way to completely get rid of all issues after unrooting.

Hopefully it's not a dumb question but I can't find the answer anywhere else.
I have a rooted phone w/ CWM and faux's kernel.
No 3rd party ROM installed.
I got the update today. Can I install the update with the kernel or will that do bad things to my phone?
Do I have to go back to a stock kernel and recovery to do that update or is going back to a stock kernel good enough?
I don't mind losing root, I can always reroot it. I just don't want to do something stupid to my phone.

You definitely have to go to stock recovery...i also went back to stock kernel too..then applied them back without error after update

Thanks, another possibly stupid question.
Is there only one stock recovery or are there different versions between the UVKL1 and UVKID recovery?
Will this recovery work with my UVKL1 phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319830
It's the same. To prevent having issues, I recommend doing a factory reset before flashing back to stock.
Just back up whatever you don't want erased. You don't have to worry about the external sd, the reset won't touch that.

Can you flash a different kernel after installing the latest update? Yes. Should you if you want a flawless ICS update this Monday and possibly avoid a brick? Probably not. Up to you.
Simply put, NO. As mentioned above Odin fully back to unrooted stock for he update to flash properly. Otherwise you'll have a soft brick on your hands.

Also, if you're on ICS right now, you may get boot loops after flashing back to stock. Just do a factory reset in recovery and you're good to go.

It depends what you're coming from and how/if you wiped your phone.

That looks fine. If you're on ICS and reboot after wiping to get into download mode, some apps will automatically install on first boot so you will get boot loops after you flash back to stock. That's fine if you do, just do a factory reset in recovery.

Just as a follow up to my own thread.
I followed this guide to go back to stock and then did the maintenance update.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/16727-howto-restore-stock-rom-recover-bad-flashes/
I backed up everything just in case but I didn't lose any data and it took about 10 minutes to do everything.
I'm just going to run stock until I get ICS and then reroot again.
Hey I've been tryin to flash roms for a coupla a weeks now. I know how to do the flash I'm trying to install the zips but every it just comes up with Installation Aborted. Do i need to have the bootloader unlocked to do this. Or do the zips have bugs in them.
What kernel/recovery are you flashing? What ROM are you currently running?

You need a safe recovery, DOWNLOAD THE ROM YOU WANT FIRST... Then install mobile Odin and flash a kernel called el26 then when the phone turns off quickly hold power and vol up. Then wipe cache, dalvik, and factory wipe(above cache). Then flash the ROM YOU WANT

Thats what i keep doing every time it fails. I'm using AGAT recovery stuck on FI27. i am trying o flash the Jelly version of MIUI. what is considered a safe recovery for that rom. I also have to download roms and stuff through my phone because our home internet is so slow its only 60KB/s so then i plug in my phone and move odin to the desktop. Is that causing it to fail.
as mentioned above help me
im desperate, i have flshed a dozens stock roms, factory restored, wiped cache, wiped dalvic cache and still when i flash stock rom via odin i get the bootloop . help me plz i have searched everything on this forum and nothing seems to work.

i wanted to go back to stock after installing a buggy cm10
Take out battery. Insert it back, goto recovery(HOME+POWER) & select "wipe data/factory reset". This worked for me!!
Or else, try flashing it again through odin. Ensure that it's the correct firmware suitable for ur device.

U should wipe data and factory reset before and after flashing via odin.
Then it will take about 3.4 mins to start up.
