(Feel free to read the TL/DR section at the bottom. The top section is just more detailed)
Hi,
Many months ago, I bought a MyTouch 3G slide as a replacement phone on eBay. The listing mentioned a few problems with the phone but basically it all seemed to be working. (P.S., here is not the time to lecture me about eBay!)
When I got it, I discovered the description to be in error. The phone is unable to connect to any network (roaming or my Tmobile), it occasionally has trouble booting and the battery reads strangely (it shows 100% for most of the day, then drops to 80% around 5PM)
I used this phone in conjunction with my G1 (MyTouch for webbrowsing / games, G1 for calling / texting), then bought a G2 and put in on the back shelf.
I just got back from a trip to Europe on which I brought the MyTouch as a possible time passing device. When in England, I bought a Tmobile simcard to get some data there. I never ended up using the MyTouch except as a convenient way to store my US simcard. When I got back to the US, I swapped my UK SIM into the MyTouch and the US SIM into my G2. I powed on the MyTouch to check the time (G2 was nearly dead) and suddenly it connected to the network and downloaded the little text that told me how much it would cost for various services.
Why would the UK sim work on a US network, while the US SIM does not? Is there a chance that there's a software problem with the MyTouch?
TL/DR - I have a MyTouch 3G slide which works on US networks with a UK simcard but not with a US sim card. What could be causing this?
Thanks for reading!
Maybe a problem w the sim card itself? Go to any Tmobile store and theyll swap it out for a new one.
As for ur battery problem, did u buy the phone new or used? Either way the battery is probably old. If it was new it may have been sitting on a shelf for a long time. If used, well, it may be getting to the end of its life. Ive seen some weird stuff happen with old/used/3rd party batts.
U can find replacements on ebay and amazon that are very inexpensive.

when i bought my G2 i was told i could keep using my old sim card from my G1. my G2 average network speed is like average 500-800kb/s, sometimes 1200kb/s, rarely from 2300-3000kb/s, and every blue/red/black moon it will hit slightly more than 4000kb/s. i live in LA and work in Beverly Hills, so im covered.
i know bandwidth can affect the speeds, but i'd expect to get on average at least above 1200kb/s. my question is could my sim card be having any negative effect on my speeds? should i put in the new one?
oh yeah and i have not recieved the OTA yet either.
The thing is that HSPA+(pseudo "4G") isn't available everywhere. You're probably only on HSDPA which is quite a bit slower than HSPA+.
I don't think changing your sim card would affect your speeds at all, because the sim card doesn't interpret or recieve any data from the cell towers (correct me if I'm wrong)
It just says "HI I'M MIKE'S PHONE AND MY PHONE NUMBER IS XXX-XXX-XXXX AND HERE'S ALL MY INFO"
^_^
thanks for the reply!
i checked the coverage maps and according to them my area is covered. what can i do to get those speeds? i dont think ive ever been on hspa+
IMO I don't think their coverage map is that accurate. For example my house apparently has HSPA+ according to them. However no phones (tried on AT&T and T-Mo) are able to get very good signal at all, with my G2 unable to get data at home. However if I walk to the end of my street I am able to just barely get HSPA+.

I have a bad feeling about that email I sent with all my bank details to the guy from Nigeria who I was helping transfer some money
changing ur sim would help if u are getting poor signal/coverage and thats only if you are using a very old simcard such as ones from voicestream. also does your G2 banner (when u pull down for notification alert) say T-Mobile | Get More? if it does you may need to update ur sim and it will remove that and just say T-Mobile.
For what it's worth, my SIM card is about 8 years old and I get some really nice speeds with my G2. So I'd say it has very little to do with your SIM card.
The only thing that matters is the radio that the phone supports, the sd doesn't matter. Go into teting via dial pad(*#*#4636#*#*) and force the network type you want.
Just for the hell of it I called T-Mobile today and activated the new SIM that came with my G2. The one I was using was from two phones ago when I had my Sidekick. But even with that SIM card I was getting exceptional speeds. I've been using it for weeks in my G2.
I also told T-Mobile to make sure my web was provisioned with the newest plan.
I haven't used data much since then, because it was only a few hours ago and I use WIFI at home. But if I notice a big difference I'll post here.
I would say that you probably just have a very busy network in your area. Data speeds depend a lot on how many people are using the network in your area. Or maybe just the towers aren't fully upgraded yet.
apprecaite all the help!
my sim card isnt that old, its the same one that came with my g1, which i bought in 2009. i talked to a rep earlier today, he said it might affect the speeds because they made new sim cards this year? idk cause then the rep im talking to now says it has no efffect. i think im just gonna cahnge the sim just cause i want to, if it actually makes any difference ill let you guys know
ok i just changed the sim card, and the speeds did actually improve. aside from that, accoding to the speedtest results, im now actually connecting to hspa+, before all it would say is cell, now it says umts sometimes. overall seems like an improvement

Yeah me too only it was a pretty white girl from Ghana....wondered why so many women that look like college cheerleaders are there clearing up their father's Estate......hmmmm.
I have my Desire on Three UK network. It used to fall back to a 2G signal when there was no 3g coverage, for example when I am at home.
I noticed yesterday that my phone just wouldn't get a signal in the house, I then checked my old N95 which still has a Three Uk sim card and same problem.
Anyway I went to work and same issue inside the office. Can get a 3g signal when there is one but no 2g signal.
I deceided to phone up Three customer service to see if there was a fault or something but no real help there apart from they said they would report what I said to their technical team.
I then come home and look on the net and see things like this....
http://www.gogadgetnews.com/2010/11/08/3-starts-killing-off-2g-coverage/
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems ?
If they have switched of 2g here then I am fuming as it means I cant receive any calls at home !!
The 3 network hate to 2 use 2g because thay have to pay 02 to piggy back on there network

They used to use O2, but they switched to Orange some years ago.
If you no longer get a signal at home or work you may be able to get out of your contract.
Regards,
Dave
Yes. so much so i have got out of my contract eary without penatly, over the last 6 months the 3g transmiter works for a few days every time thay fix it.
Thay have turned off 2g now a quick look on Google will fill you in with the information.
I recently purchased a G2 and was wondering if there is any benifit in activating the new simcard? I live in an area where 3G is everywhere but inside the city limits. I used to work at At&t way back when it was Cingular and I briefly remeber telling people something about upgrading to the 64 or 128 bit simcard (can't remember for sure). I have been using the same simcard for two+ years. If I travel to area's outside the city, I can use 3G speeds.
Your Knowledge is greatly appriciated.

Why not?
You have nothing to loose!
...and I'm nearly certain it doesn't give you any extra benefit; I've had my SIM Since, the T-Mo Wing[?]
& Its still Going Strong!
Just replace it the sim technolgy has been the same for several years but if its real old the new 4g network might suffer a bit but still won't be to bad but it comes with a new one so just update it. Make sure that you back up any contacts you may have saved on it first though

I called a T-mo rep about it and he said the sim cards have a expeiry date based on network transitions. He told me to activate the new sim simply because it was able to "recognize" more available bandwidth and that it did not expire from transitioning from umts, hsdpa, and hspa+ quickly where as he said mine would. (I find this bogus because my voicestream SIM card still worked)

I personally think that T-Mo are talking BS. I'd be happy to be wrong if someone can provide proof that they're actually correct on this issue.
Actually its probably best. I checked my old sim card with the new sim card and the copper connector on the back is different from the new and old sim cards. Plus after activating the new one, I didn't have hiccups transfering from E to 3G to H whereas before it would randomly drop from H to E. But thats for me.
Multiple of times a day, my wife gets an "x" on the status bar of her mytouch 3g slide where the 3g internet sign and bars should be. After a minute or so, her phone reboots on its own and then establishes a data connection. Does anyone know why? Could someone please help? When the X pops up, she can't access the internet, can't get any calls, etc. It just says no service.
i have the same prob with mine. i found out that my SIM card comes free from sliding the phone open and closed and causes it to reboot. it happens about 1 every 2 weeks for me.
The X ,like you said, means your not in service range or in the coverage area that your network uses. Happens all the time when I'm at school or heading down to the country.
That's what the X usually means, but since you have rebooting issues the issue may be something else entirely. Seeing as I've never encounter this I can't be of help on that issue.
This used to happen to me on my old hd2. After numerous calls to t-mobile we figured out it was caused by an old, incompatible sim card. I have been with t-mobile for the last 6 years and when they started rolling out 3g, the sim cards they started using changed as well. If shes had her sim card for a few years look into getting a new one (they should replace it for free). Hope this helps.
Thanks guys! Much appreciated. She's going to see what the problem is next week. May even get a new phone or sim card.

I asked this same question on the Inspire messageboards, and was told I may get a better response here...
I am taking a trip to the UK. A friend of mine gave me an AT&T Inspire to use during my trip. I rooted and unlocked the Inspire. My trip will take me all over the UK (including Scotland.) Which UK sim card should I buy for my Inspire? Which UK sim card will be the most reliable and have the greatest coverage in the UK? I see myself using the data (which unfortunately will only be EDGE) more than making calls with the phone. Should I buy a UK sim card now and have it shipped to me, or should I wait until I arrive in the UK to buy the sim card?
If you can get one shipped, giffgaff. £10 goody bag, unlimited Iinternet, plus calls and sms. Uses o2 network which I believe the best..

all networks have similar coverage tmo and Orange use each others towers so they will be best for coverage, U could, wait and get a sim for as little as £0.75p. This is pay as you go u can use the O2 network and purchase bolt ons which add internet from a day to a month calls you can top up money on your phobe, calls are around 20 to 40p a minute. I'd wait and go onto the phone shop here, tell them what u need and they should provide you with a package to suit your needs, shop around as well to get the best deal.
Also I hope you have a gsm phone because cmda phones do not work in Europe, where would u put your sim?

3 will give you the best deal but weak coverage. vodafone has the best coverage. if i were you i would research online then buy when you come here. and like jonnibravo says, make sure your phone is gsm.

My HTC Inspire is definitely a GSM phone. However, for 3G data, the Inspire uses the 850/1900 GSM bands, and in europe 3G is 900/1800, so my Inspire will have to use Edge data instead of 3G while I am in the U.K. Since my phone will not get 3G while in the U.K., which sim card should I purchase?
Definitely second the recommendation of giffgaff. Edge is stable on o2, coverage one of the best and the giffgaff pricing is the best deal around bar 3 which if you are stuck on Edge won't work anyway.
Which sim card for trip to UK
If you purchase an International Roaming SIM when you travel, instead of taking your UKI mobile with you whilst you travel , then you should save at least 70% or more. I am sure that you would rather keep your money in your pocket., I'm using holidayphone during my foreign tour. They providing cheap and best services.
