Odd issue with the captivate buttons - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

For some odd reason when I am at work they will freak out and start pushing on their own and its only at work lol and it happens on different roms to I know the signal is low but has anyone else had this issue ? If so a work around maybe thanks

Please post the rom you are currently using too and if you've tried anything to correct it yet.

On blazer 4.1 but did the same thing on aokp and stock el29
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

Also it does not do this anywhere else but at my desk at work
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

I noticed mine doing that today...menu button getting "pressed" when my hand was nowhere near it. Stock el29 rooted rom.

You by any chance using a 3rd party wall charger?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

It's a common issue in low signal conditions. Mine does it constantly when switching from 3g to wifi or when data comes back after sending a text or on a call. There's several threads on the subject but there really isn't a fix as of now. I got around it by using an older version of paranoidandroid rom and using the onscreen buttons and disabling the physical capacitive buttons.
It has nothing to do with rom/kernel combos or if you're charging or not. I've tried it all.

Thanks yea sucks that my desk is right where this happens lol

Black screen during call?

So my wife's epic is on EL30 (no FC09 yet, I've checked) and almost every time someone calls her and she answers, the screen goes black and will not turn on to be able to press anything. Also she cannot hear anything the person is saying on the phone but they can hear her. The screen comes back on when the person hangs up on the other end. Any suggestions?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
It may be a stupid question but is the phone to her ear when it won't turn on? Cuz its not supposed to... also if she is using the 100 mhz frequency try disabling that frequency and using 200 as the min.

Reflash a stock Rom thru odin.

She is actually 100% stock I haven't messed with her phone as of yet. So it is a stock issue. And yes when she pulls the phone away from her ear the screen is still black. And she can't hear anything. Also, the only way she can talk to anyone on the phone at all is on speaker phone.

If you have insurance bring it into sprint... sounds like maybe a malfunctioning proximity sensor... that doesn't really explain the sound issue though... again that also sounds hardware related (seens how your on stock rom). No insurance? Great videos on how to take this phone apart... take it apart and look for any loose ribbons or anything...

Request Dev help broke power button

My phone was bought off Craigslist and I can't afford a new phone my hardware power button got conductive oil inside of it now whenever pressed it acts like. Held and hard restarts, I found an app called any unlock or something like that on the market my problem is when my phone sleeps it kills the process and I cant wake it is there a Dev who can help me make this program start in foreground I read about it but am clueless so I could really use help also if anyone knows where I can order the hardware button part that would be killer cause I could pay a shop to do the circuit soldering, I use this as my work phone and am worried I as I need to invest 500 into tools for work this month and can't afford repair, also my phone is on boost so there is no warranty, I can not take it to sprint, thank you
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If you use CM9 you can set the volume buttons to wake the phone up. Could be a temporary fix for your problem.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
That sounds good but with it is now I'm not sure I can get it into download or recovery, I can't remember the buttons off the top of my head, but if I can that sounds like a good temp solution, thanks ... do you know if there is a one click Odin for that and if I can just flash it over stock rooted el29 also if its ice based apn settings are an issue for me I need to be able to change them to boost mobiles, I contacted a store that does button soldering and replacement so I may give that a shot on Friday

Epic Touch 4g will randomly press 'Options' Menu on any screen.

I just got a used Epic Touch 4g from Cowboom. Today is the first day using it and I really like it. However I am having some weird issues. While the phone is on and I am either in a browser (Dolphin, Stock) or an app the 4 capacitve buttons will light up automatically. Then sometimes after they light up at the bottom of the screen the Options menu will show up. When this happens the phone haptic feed back goes off.
Anyone know what is going on and possibly a solution before returning? I really don't want to return this phone.
I'm having the exact same issue. It started doing this since I installed the "official" ICS. I didn't have this issue with GB. I have not gone back to GB since I really like ICS...

Mine does it all the time being that I never have good signal here in Tallahassee
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Same here I noticed this randomly since I have been on Official ICS.
Has this phone been out for over a year? Since I bought it used I don't know if there is any manufacturer's warranty left on it. I didn't purchase insurance.
I had the same issue for months but only when cell service was crappy. They replaced the screen at the Sprint store and it never happened again.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I had something similar going on. I called Sprint a few times and ended up going into one of the stores with a service center. I left it for about 45 minutes and the guy said the cable that connects the front capacitive buttons had come loose. I haven't had any issues like this in two months, simple fix. Also, I had an ICS rom on the device prior to the official release and the guy didn't say a thing.
Good luck.
Kyle
How long has this phone been out? Is there a one year manufacturers warranty? I may need to see if I can take advantage of that since I didn't purchase insurance.
this is a known issue, if you search the forum you'll find lots of examples of it, most have just taken it to sprint, even w/o insurance they probably fix it/swap it out for the $35 as this seems to be a common problem

I thought this was a common problem with AOSP builds.
It only happens to me when I lose signal.
But this is a hardware problem?

Yeah this is the first time I heard about it being a hardware (screen) issue too. I never had it happen across all GB ROMs, and just about every leaked ICS build. I didn't experience it until I flashed CM9.

I haven't experienced any button lockups, only phantom menu button spam when I hit a extremely low signal. This only happened to me in the 10 months I've owned this phone, after flashing CM9.
I've noticed this when plugged into a car charger and using navigation in spotty service areas. I always thought it was a heat/capacitance issue.

Stock gingerbread touch issues

i work in the sprint store and in the past few days we have gotten at least 4 people with an epic touch still running gingerbread (with no option to update to ics) having issues with the bottom buttons not responding, touch screen acting weird, vibration activating sporadically, and with one case the media scanner runs in a loop. the only way to solve these issues have been to factory reset. but could only be temporary. the customers havnt returned. these issues have not just been happening on older devices but recent activation's.
is this a common issue? is there a fix? (without rooting!) we are a sprint store. we cant promote that lol

I just activated my phone yesterday morning. I am getting very similar issues as the OP. See here. The 4 capacitive buttons when they light up won't respond for a few minutes on mine also. Then the 'Options' button shows up.

Sounds like a batch of bad software flashes from the warehouse. Probably just need reflashed?
FYI, our store hasn't seen this

I thought the same thing but its been mostly from well established customers. It may have just been a coincidence but I'll see how this week turns out. The factory resets seem to have fixed the issues. Just could have been gingerbread getting confused after being used for awhile lol. Which brings me to another question.. is there any way to push the ics update to an epic touch that's still on gingerbread without Odin. Keep in mind this is a sprint store and we are very limited on our resources

Edit: i got 2 more first one i update to ics ota no bluetooth 2nd one i got was already ics with working bluetooth i downgraded to el29 then did the same process as all the other phones but this one works????
Edit: ok so the one phone I got that was already on ics Bluetooth works but its white my personal phone is black I wanted to keep it black but have Bluetooth working so I swap motherboards but then Bluetooth didnt work once it was in the black housing nor did the white one anymore I restored them both to el29 then upgraded back to ics now Bluetooth works on the white phone again with the motherboard from my black phone but still dont work on my black phone even though the mother board in my black phone worked in the white housing, I then realized if I put the motherboard from any of the other phones ive tried in that white housing Bluetooth will work. Is it the antenna? If so y would i have so many with bad antennas plus they all work on gb
