[Q] USB keyboards on kindle fire. - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a question I got a kindle fire mostly for school. I have not rooted yet(waiting for my prime trial to expire haha) but when I got it I had no Idea USB keyboards were not compatible. What I wanna know is if the keyboards are not compatible due to the, from my understanding, extremely modded gingerbread that the fire comes with or if once I root to an ics rom will the keyboards be compatible.

You can try, but make sure you get a nice, stable ics rom. If none are obsolete, get CM7 from JackpotClavin's thread. However, the keyboard must be one designed for a tablet with micro USB support. If it doesn't work, I could probably piece together a driver..but let's not get carried away yet I'd get the right keyboard and a rom first. Let me know how it goes Oh, I almost forgot, it should be a limitation from the extremely modified gingerbread os

I'm looking at keyboards through amazon and most of them say recommended for fire but claim to be for ipad. I have a microusb to Usb 2.0 converter. Should I be ok with that?

You can't use any old converter. You need one made specifically for USB OTG use. These have a couple of connectors shorted together that tells the device to go into OTG mode.
You also need a kernel with support for USB OTG built into it. This disqualifies all CM7 ROMs.
Support for USB OTG on Kindle Fires is spotty at best. You may or may not need to have a separate power source for this to work. There are many discussions on this in KF General.

[Q] HDMI Out w/ Standard BT Stack

So, sorry if this has been answered before, I've looked quite a bit and haven't been able to find a definitive answer. I'm running Juggernaut 4.1 which doesn't seem to work with TV-Out via MHL adapter. I installed Juggernaut so I could pair PS3 controllers to the phone for emulation. My question is, if I revert to stock ROM but root it, will I be able to run the standard BT stack to pair PS3 controllers while maintaining TV-Out capabilities? Or am I stuck waiting for ICS? Thanks so much to anyone who can provide an easy answer for me, I've honestly spent a lot of time looking for this and still can't figure it out.
I'm using same ROM, HDMI works for me.

Oh Damn, maybe it's because I didn't clear my cache when I updated the ROM? I used the TV-Out with my GF's stock ROM and nothing with mine for some reason.
The Sixaxis app works on the stock rom, but you have to be rooted. I made a video showing it off the first day the dev updated it for our phones http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392898
Basically he worked around our non-AOSP bluetooth stack so it works. No need to use MIUI or CM7.
How they hell do you use that mhl adapter? I have one i got for free, and plugged the tv hdmi cord into it but nothing ever inputs onto the tv no matter what i run/do. Am i missing something major here?

KF USB question

So I am curious if anyone knows if this is possible or if one is even available. I am wondering if their is a memory card reader that you can connect to the micro USB port on he Kindle Fire and be able to transfer lets say pictures o your Kindle Fire?
The reason I ask this is I go hunting and we got a new Field Camera and I would like to be able to take the memory card out of the field camera and copy the pictures to my Kindle Fire to view.
Thank you in advance

Haha. Yes, he did a great job.
The answer, not currently. What you are describing is your kindle acting as usb host. For an accessory to be host, it has to impliment a Protocol called usb on the go or usb otg. It appears as if our hardware supports this, but no guarantees yet. A few have tried to enable this on their custom kernels, but no one has succeeded yet. I hope this more properly answers your question. If someone successfully enables usb otg what you suggested could, ane would likely, be possible.
Android also announced a new standard call Android Open Accessory last year, but I haven't found any products making use of it aside from development boards. Here's the introductory paragraph from developers.android.com USB accessory page:
USB accessory mode allows users to connect USB host hardware specifically designed for Android-powered devices. The accessories must adhere to the Android accessory protocol outlined in the Android Accessory Development Kit documentation. This allows Android-powered devices that cannot act as a USB host to still interact with USB hardware. When an Android-powered device is in USB accessory mode, the attached Android USB accessory acts as the host, provides power to the USB bus, and enumerates connected devices. Android 3.1 (API level 12) supports USB accessory mode and the feature is also backported to Android 2.3.4 (API level 10) to enable support for a broader range of devices.
So if all else fails, I'd still expect to see some devices using AOA hit the market in the not-too-distant future. A keyboard with a sd card slot and a couple usb ports on it would be pretty awesome
This is being worked on in the ics builds. Its in an alpha stage i believe that it works to an extent right now. Should work completely soon, i think its in cm9_2_24

I'm running the 2/24 build and looked around to see where it might be mounting a storage device, but I don't see it. For example, USB OTG is enabled on my Galaxy S2 and mounts storage devices on /sdcard/usbStorage. I've even tried creating that mount point on the Kindle Fire, but nothing happens. Do you have any more details?
im sorry, i mis-read the post on that, he stated that he was working on it, and it wasnt included in this build, my fault. that being said it shouldnt be too long before it is uploaded and made into an update here is the post about usb otg

No harm no foul. I thought I missed something or you had some insider knowledge that would let me test it for myself. Maybe just a little wishful thinking on both of our parts. In any case, it will be a great feature addition to the Kindle Fire if/when it becomes available.

yeah, ive been waiting for this for a while, given our limited storage capacity, usb host would be useful.
I second that. It would be nice to be able to use micro usb accessories but luckily they are working on making this a reality with the CM9 port for KF

There's really no point and I don't think anybody has done it.
I would be interested in the same thing for other android devices. A tablet with hardwired Ethernet would be awesome for setting up routers and switches at new installs and not needing a laptop!

- For use in a setting where wireless networks may be impractical... e.g. interference from other equipment results in poor wireless connections or wireless equipment causes interference for some other critical piece of equipment.
- For use in a setting where wireless networks may be banned... e.g. a security conscious workplace does not allow wireless connections.
- For use in a setting where some services may be disabled for wireless devices... e.g. wireless devices can reach external web sites, but cannot access internal file servers
- For use as a "dumb terminal" of sorts to directly connect to a headless server
What seems pointless to one does not make it useless for all.
I agree with you kinfauns... my reason for asking this question about the kindle is that there is a guy who has a kindle but no wireless at his house.. he has Ethernet but no wireless.. And he can't get wireless
He will need to piggy back off his computers Internet using USB tethering. If he's using the default Kindle OS this will not be possible however.

I may be missing something but I fail to see how it is possible that he has Ethernet but can't get wireless at his house.... The simple solution would be buy a WiFi router and plug that into the Ethernet he already has. Probably cheaper than buying a bunch of adapters to go from micro USB to Ethernet anyways and definitely much more convenient. AFAIK it isn't even possible to convert between the two.
I just picked up a trendnet WiFi n router with dual 2db antennas for $15 on tigerdirect.com and I have seen them for under $10 before.
Not trying to be rude, just trying to understand what the situation is.

Regardless of what his purpose might be, if he is trying to get Ethernet via a USB dongle through USB OTG he would need android drivers for his particular Ethernet USB dongle, right?
Which pretty much means he would have to write them. Then you have to wonder how much power the Ethernet USB adapter would need to pull from the Fire's rather wimpy USB port...

I got here trying to find out the same answer; ethernet to Kindle. WiFi is very toxic for some people, especially very sick ones. But the Kindle is a pleasure; buying new books and reading in bed. This is a serious inquiry on my part. I wish it existed.

I am here for the same thing. Kindles are great, but there are reasons for wanting it connected to a closed ethernet-only environment. I'm one of those wanting to find the people who can help with this. I don't think Amazon is worried, but I DO worry about WiFi poisoning and I also believe it's no one else's business what I do on a device I bought for my private use. I'm hoping there are others out there with the desire and ability to solve this.
Just wondering if you had any luck?

Hello, I am also trying to find a responsible way to connect my Kindle Fire to the internet, as it is necessary just to register and to get some of my materials to read. I am electro-hypersensitive, a condition that disables, developing from over exposure to genotoxic, neurotoxic and immunotoxic microwave radiation used to transmit the info wirelessly (See bioinitiative.org for your own health). This technology takes down the healthiest people, such as military/airforce personnel and firemen... it is that toxic. People get sick and do not attribute to the technologies anti-biological impacts, and blame it on food that is innocent or neutral, or "mystery." I just want to be able to use my kindle without worsening my already depreciated functional state. I got sick because I believed this tech was not biologically active and exposed myself, now am over exposed due to the wireless tresspass into my home environment from neighbors and organizations that place towers, antennas, satellite that blanket radiates neighborhoods. Please look into the military research such as posted on Dr. Magda Havas' site for convenience. These technologies were well investigated in the 70s for weapons use by the military. This is for every one, not just those that are hypersensitive, as it harms all biology, even insects like bees suffer (please see .pdf "Irradiated").

PS/2 to USB adapter for keyboard question

Has anyone had success using one of these adapters (the cheap passive ones) for utilizing a PS/2 keyboard on the Kindle, of course going into a powered USB hub? I'd like to hopefully find a cheap solution because I currently do not own a USB keyboard, only an old PS/2 style. I figured I would ask first before I shelled out a much needed $1 for the adapter. I've tried searching on Google (a half fast search I'll admit) but learned I might need an active adapter for this purpose. Maybe someone can help me out with this question.

I didn't want to chance it as I heard a couple stories of people frying their keyboard by using this adapter. I just went ahead and purchased a USB keyboard.

BTW can you tell me what is the otg cable you're using?
None of those that I use with my phone work with Kindle Fire (for some silly reason).

Nexus 7 2013 USB otg recommendation?

First of all sorry for my bad spelling I'm from Puerto Rico (I talk Spanish )
I'm new to this and I want to know what or which USB otg is good
(from what i read this cable is for connecting keyboards, pen drives, mouse etc.) Correct me if I'm wrong. The point is I don't know which one is the ideal for this things if somebody post amazon links I will appreciate it.
I found one in a old thread of nexus 7 but it cant be shipped to my country (Puerto Rico)

I got this one, great quality.
And I have this one so I can use an OTG device whilst charging (needs a kernel with OTG+Charge support).
Amazon says it ships to your country, with the exception of some hazardous products.
I use ebay. Paid $2 for one from china. Arrived quick, works

So the second one need root right? The first doesn't ?

Well, you need an unlocked bootloader for the second (in order to flash a kernel that can support OTG+USB charging), and you would need to install (or boot to) a custom recovery in order to flash said kernel, that being said, root can be useful with both in order to use stickmount, but you do not need root for either for normal use.
So I'd get the second one, since it will function like the first one without a supported kernel, they are both OTG, it's just that the second one lets you plug in your charger to charge it at the same time (and your kernel supports it), and powers the OTG device, if the kernel you have is stock, for example, the second one will behave just like the first one.
I have both because I got the first one before knowing that OTG+Charge existed...and it never hurts having extras...I also use a powered hub with the second one so I can charge the N7, power whatever OTG devices (multiple) at the same time.
Very useful information thanks. I really like that double use but I'm going to get the first one since I'm going to do the basic stuff.
But I'll will consider the second one for a future use.
Thanks a lot. I just order it on amazon. Again thanks!

No problem, glad to help.
I use these. The straight is great for keyboards and mice, two-pack for under $2.

This right-angled is great for keeping small USB flash drives against the tablet's edge, sometimes $3.99, today $1.99.
