I flashed the most recent TBASGSIII 2.0 ROM. (FF18 stockish tw ROM with agats kernel/recovery).
I was installing my apps setting up my bootanimation and removing garbage and think i removed/disabled the wrong thing.
Programs are acting like they have no root access. Cant quickboot or remount /system. Mobil Odin cant recognize device to flash gb kernel to restore nandroid.
Im visiting with the inlaws and have no usb cable. I have a laptop, wifi, kies, and my E4GT as my only tools for survival.
I have no way to recover from a brick except to reactivate my HTC Hero (epic fail).
My most recent nandroids are all ICS using agats recovery to backup. Im not sure if its safe to restore using even his safe recovery or if that will even fix my issue.
Last things i remember doing before this were flashing a boot animation zip, replacing the boot animation and sound files in system, and disabled a couple apps (talk, task, not sure).

You must have deleted super user
Try flashing su.zip
Also mobile Odin needs root access so you can't use it
But you can use odin

Can u link su.zip or post i can get it from? I cant get xda app to load for some reason.
Superuser app shows binaries are installed, but cant gain root access to update them.
Is it safe to nandroid restore with agats kernel/recovery?

As long as you can still get to CWM this should do the trick for you. Flash it in CWM, reboot your phone, and you should be good to go.

Good luck!
PS - Restoring a nandroid from Agat's recovery is completely safe.
Agats had proven to be safe for me. I have flawlessly backed up and restored using it. Even wiping everything works. Just make sure you don't wipe after you restore if your recovery isn't agat's... YOU WILL BRICK HARD. If you did a nandroid, Agat's should save you.

Thank you all. I did eventually make it home and odined to el28 and restored from there to be sure.
Im glad that agat's kernel is safe for recovering too. Definitely loving the green menu, too

I'm on cyanogenmod 10 beta 3 and wanted to go back to AOKP Milestone 6 but I'm having problems with superuser (and therefore cant use mobile odin) so I was wondering if I could just restore my nandroid back to EL26 via the JB recovery mode and then flash the aokp ROM through that recovery like normal? Or would that not work/brick my phone?

Bump, really need some input on this. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

Safe bet as I had the same issue: use sfhub one click to go back to el29 w root, then one click root to el26 cwm access and then you're good to go. Just make sure whatever road u take it leads you to el26 cwm by chris41g.

I don't really have a PC at my disposal at the moment though is my biggest problem :/ which is why I was asking if restoring back to my nandroid back up via JB recovery would be safe?

Hey, quick question.I'm just trying to do some reading about safety and such, and came across your post. Wouldn't it be safe to JUST Odin EL26 CWM alone? Without going back to EL29 first? Is that necessary? Again, not being a smartass and trying to call you out, I'm just really trying to get a hold on what is safe, or not, and procedures.

Well the main issue is it seems he lost root access....just saying its safest to start fresh. Only takes 10 extra minutes. If he had root he would've been able to just mobile Odin el26 like he stated, but its not an option.

Exactly. That's the problem I'm having, which is why I'm asking if (since i dont have a pc to use) It would be smart and safe to just restore my nandroid (which is el26 with root and cwm) from the JB recovery (cwm6) and then just flash my original ROM through el26 cwm.
Anyone think this is safe?

It sounds safe, both are quoted as being safe recoveries. I even restored a nand from a broken phone onto my replacement one yesterday so I'm sure what you're doing is far less risky. Its the wiping in non-safe recoveries that caused bricks, you should be OK as long as you don't do something stupid like pull the battery during the restore.

Someone else told me that even while restoring a nandroid backup, it still wipes data, so if you're on an unsafe kernel, it still can brick. Just so everyone knows, I was on a safe kernel when I bricked mine. Apparently there was a mis-merge that happened that caused the safe kernel to be unsafe for a few days. I was very unlucky, but its one of the risks we all take when doing this. I'm planning on odin-ing el26 kernel whenever I need recovery from here on out!

Just thought of something: if you lost root, how do you still have a custom recovery? You may want to wait til ur near a PC to do el26 flash!

Now you find one of the "rogue" kernels. Look for el29 rogue kernel. After getting that kernel you need to use odin. That kernel is a zip. So we need a tar version of the el26 kernel. That one is by chris41g. You load up the drivers for this phone(setting up samsung kies is easiest.). Then you download odin 1.85. Install and open it. In the pda slot put the el26 kernel. Do not touch anything else. Click start. By the way should have said this earlier. Once odin is installed turn your phone off. Push and hold volume down and powerbutton simultaneously then keep holding until you see a warning in green.push volume up. Now you are in download mode. Connect your phone via usb. You should see the first box in odin pop up with a number. If not do not proceed. It does not matter what numbers are in the box as long as there is a number. Now put the el26.tar into ghe pda slot. Then press start. Once done, push and hold volume up until you get to recovery then let go. Now use the volumes to scroll to backup and restore. Click it then backup. This is only taking a system image. If you want the contents of your as card backed up you need to transfer those files to your computer.

Or searh youtube for qbking77 video. Pretty sure he had one on how to do that.
Or use sfhub autoroot package?
Tappin' Typin'
So here's my issue. My phone no longer allows me to flash roms from my external or internal sd card safely. What happens with every rom I flash is twofold. Data connection is always lost, and any reboot causes the phone to boot directly into download mode bypassing the odin flash page. The phone recovers from this with a simple odin back to stock. However, not being able to use non stock roms is no bueno to me.
Does this sound like some internal hwr problem? Is this an SD card issue? Would love some insite.
Which recovery are you using?

Using clockwork recovery current version
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Every ROM I flashed had some bugs and they started to multiply. I used Super Wipe and killed EVERYTHING.
I then loaded every zip onto my micro SD via my computer and put it in my phone. Flash and Go.
I went back to stock rooted MA7. The glitches were gone,
So my suggestion is to do a recovery of your first full backup or do what I did.
Okay will try super wipe tonight thanks

Okay, I can't find the thanks button for you guys. THis is the solution. Don't use CWM recovery. TWRP worked wonders, and because I didn't format recovery in cwm so superwipe would probably had helped as well
Glad its working now. I have never used cwm on this phone. But twrp has been smooth sailing.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda premium
Use twrp on my s3, and cwm on the wife's note 2. Never had a problem with cwm. Sounds like the problem was not doing a full wipe with cwm (and not a problem with the cwm recovery itself)? But, whatever works for you.

Can you wipe data in recovery at all? As long as you can get into Download mode, there's always a way to save the device by flashing back to stock and starting again, so don't lose hope.

Honestly, I have never, ever had any luck with TWRP, and I've tried it many times on many devices. It looks great, but it's just not as reliable as the good old CWM recovery. This isn't to start a flame war with TWRP fans. I'm just stating my observations over the last few years of trying it.
I am with you I have been flashing for years this is the first time this has happened. Now I am in the process of going back to stock with a slow ass computer. Thanks
Sent from my GT-P5210 using xda app-developers app
If you can get into download mode by pressing both volume keys while plugging in the usb cable connected to your PC, then you are not bricked, just do a factory image flash and start over, it happens even to the more experienced.
I btw use CWM but I don't flash ROM's that much.
Erik
You also posted the same issue in at least 3 different posts. Limit it to one post and you might get more response.
I had that happen with one of the TWRP files floating around here. If you wanna use TWRP, you need the hacked e986 one which works splendidly on my e980. Hardcore CWM fan, myself, but I love the ease of just using the touch screen.

If you have an SD card you can download the CWM .zip from here, put it on your card and flash that from within TWRP. Then you just have to reboot the recovery, wipe and restore. This is the CWM included in FreeGee. I personally tested this version for @Shelnutt2 a while back and have used the .zip a few times, since.
I did it and it worked thanks
