hi everyone, a friend of mine has a desire (stock rom) and always the problem that the internal capacity is full. now we are looming for a stable rom which basicly has sd card limit for apps and is not restricted to the intetnal one.
ive read quite a lot here and lokked at some roms and have some favorites, but i would like to get some input from actual desire users what rom they use and how the situation is with the app storage space.
so what rom do you use?
and hows the app storage situation with the rom?

you're going to get confusing answers from this question in my opinion, though you could try here. if you want stability at the moment stick with GB roms.
best bet would be to browse through a few in the development section, see what your friend wants, rather than what other people tell you is the BEST ROM EVER

virtually all of them will have raised the limit on app storage using various scripts, which is one of the main reasons of custom roms on desire in the first place
each rom will have their own requirements, but generally need an sd-ext partition (use 4ext recovery or gparted) and/or a hboot partition table.
i've always found this guide useful in understanding root/memory stuff.

Supernova,by Droidzone, just do a 2gig ext4 partition and you will have 2gig of internal memory.
This Rom is base on stock 2.3 and is tweak for the better. Super smooth and your low memory days are over. Don' t take my word try it yourself
my HTC Desire runs actually BCM cyanogenmod9 with a data++ hboot
Anyway, you could get free space without changing rom and avoid using sd card ext (which might introduce some lags), by flashing the bravo Sense hboot (saving 70MB and keeping HTC Desire's stock rom).
That's my point, but it depends on your friend's rom preferences
thanks all for the feedback, actually i looked yesterday at some roms and supernova was one of the roms i considered since its aosp based, the other would be mildwild which is cm7 based, i guess i will just add my friend what suits her better and then go with that.
any bugs or other issues i should be aware with theae roms?
oh and i think the device has 5.11....radio i think. will that cause problems?

I just converted to mildwild 4.1.9 and can vouch for it being very impressive. I have setcpu app on it and now have 75% battery at the end of the day. I have a 16GB SD card and loads of storage so far, but I must say I am more disciplined with what I install now, as I used to gum it up with anything and everything! Mine is a desire GSM btw.

It's not AOSP. But Stock HTC Sense with scripts and some mods.
i noticed and im not to impressed by it but mildwild 5 got bootloops. gona try 4.9 or a pure cm rom in the coming days

Oxygen rom is worth a look. AOSP rom that is closest to stock Gingerbread that you'll gonna get for desire. Just use the custom hboot for it found in http://alpharev.nl. (s-off required) and EXT partition on the sd card and it should give you one of the most stable rom with decent space for your apps.
check http://oxygen.im to get the rom.
iv been using mildwild oxygen the past week and got no complaints, i used runnymede aio as my "stock" rom and always went back to it lol but i honestly cant see myself going back this time

we tried mildwild oxygene but after one day and 5 self reboots its clear this is not stable at all.
now i have an other question, i flashed cm 7.2 with full wipe but the device always booted/rebooted into recovery... what can be the cause of that? mithg we have some partitioning problem here?
or something else thats wrong?
i partitioned the sd card with the cwm (1gb ext, 32mb swap) that gets installed with rom manager (5.0.2 or so i think).
if this is the problem, would be awesome to get a link to what we need to make cm 7.2 work. thanks.

well thats nice for you, but my friend got lots of reboots so i dont consider this stable at all and we need to try somethig else.
i guess its like oc/uc nor everything works for every device.
that is nice for me. also could have something to do with that rom manager and partitioning ur sdcard with that crap cwm

maybe you could mention something better instead of just calling cwm crap?
well maybe if u wasnt so cheeky i would of. cwm is known to make bad partitions so maybe try 4ext recovery or gparted to partition. i use 1gb ext4 and rest fat32 (no swap) with mildwild oxygen and iv had no problems so maybe try 4ext recovery

thanks for the information, i will check the partitions today with gparted and probably reformat. i created a 32m swap partition and i dont know if cwm created a ext3 or ext4 partition so that might be the problem...
i did not intend to be "cheeky" (and not sure if i understand it correctly, sometimes im getting a bit upset when people post something like: " it works for me." and do not think about adding some info what could be different:O
if ur gona use mildwild oxygen i dont think u will need a swap size when u partition sdcard, just do a 1gb ext4 or 1.5gb max and the rest fat32

I am using MW based on Oxygen v4 with a SD-EXT partition of 1GB and set-up with APPS+DATA to SD-EXT. Don't think I am close to running out of space. I have 104 apps installed including the big ones like Google+/Skype/etc.

omfg this has been explained so many times, and each have a separate thread on here somewhere, so it should not be that hard to do some searching yourself.
But the latter too moves the data partition to the ext-partition or if you use some other filesystem, a2whatever can let you use that partition on the sd-card. This gives you the possibility to have almost unlimited space for data and apps, but the sd-card is quite a lot slower than the flash memory, so it is easy to see the slowdowns in everyday use if you ask me.
a2sd is when you only move /data/app and possibly /data/app-private to the ext-partition. This doesn't slow the system down as much as a2sd+ or d2sd, because all the important files are kept internally, whereas on a2sd+ dalvik cache is moved as well.
Ok, so maybe I should have been a bit more clear. I have read the threads and I understand the general principles. I was more interested in knowing the practical aspects. With A2SD + for instance of you don't format the extended partition you have all your applications there after installing the ROM. But you loose configuration. Do any of the others preserve all data and apps? As in, after an installation of a new ROM, all is ready to work?

You would most likely get bootloops. When you flash a new rom, it is advisable to wipe everything. Each rom that has a2sd or what ever has different scripts.

Thanks. Based on this I think I'll be moving over to an a2sd rom soon.
Don't use a2sd+ , at least from my experience (at using and flashing all possible roms..Sense roms that is) D2SD (aka D2ext) is by far the best and most stable/fastest depending on your SD card It actually (kinda) adds the ext partition to your internal mem,so you don't have to have an app to check the status and info of your ext/a2sd parition

Is there any desire roms out there that doesnt require a ext partition these days?
I just want a custom rom without the need to always use that one sd card to boot and im not really much of an app user anyway.
a lot of the apps2sd roms will go on without an ext partition - but you'll just have limited space, usually about 73-130mb of the internal storage...
Looking in the android development thread it seems that most of them listed ext partiton as a requirement due to parts of system files are also in the ext partition required to boot.
Check with the dev of the roms for apps2sd ones that you might like... I am sure I saw an 'apps2sd killer' script too once so you might be able to apply that
the 2.1 ROMS usually goes well whitout the app2sd but its highly recommended

If you do go down the road of partitioning as you put it
Save yourself some future hassle and purchase a class 10 memory card and read about changing your recovery program to 4Ext Recovery 2.1.0.

The amount of apps you can install depends on which you choose Link2sd or Data2sd. Choose link2sd if your card is of class 4 or less. Go for data2sd only if you have a good card..

I have both HTC Wildfire S and HTC Explorer. I would still prefer Wildfire S over explorer. The only drawback of WFS is that the processor is slightly older.
But WFS has a good android development team but there is just a single ROM for Explorer.
Go for Wildfire S. Its worth it.

Im asking this because, in the steps for installing HenseMod7 there is some steps only of S-OFF devices... That means HenseMod7 is intended for S-ON devices too (S-ON means UNROOT too)
So my question is the HenseMod7 can be installed on my UNROOTED + S-ON Wildfire S?

You need SOff or S-On with unlocked bootloader + root.
The Wildfire S has that really irritating low internal memory problem when on stock.
Use the Data2SD flashable ZIP included with most ROMs posted up there. You can use ROM Manager to quickly partition your SD card (but it formats it so you lose all data on it).
If you use a Sense ROM, then Facebook for HTC Sense will pump your ContactStorage with profile pics, so even if you do Link2SD (which doesn't link system apps), you might run into low mem after a few 1000 messages and syncing contacts with fb.

.guys i've downloaded some themes for this ROM alpha6.
.after applying these themes, nothing happens. i mean, icons are still the same.
.the only theme that worked for me is the outline theme for cm9.

If your'e looking for a fully stable rom then cm7...but i prefer cm9 but it's not as stable as cm7

in addition to this great post, you should also save what you want if you havent flashed your phone yet, and partition your SD card so that it will have a swap and apps partition that the phone will throw apps to instead of the phone memory by default. i have a 32GB sd card myself so it gets a 4096MB apps ext3 partition, and a 1025MB swap partition. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for better performance. by default, Android does NOT have a very large swap file, if at all. this all can be achieved by using the ClockWorkMod Recovery Image. Use that to achieve your partitions instead of using a PC.

Not when i have a 32gb card... plus, with an ext3 partition, i can backup that sd card in linux.
In other words, when you have the extra space, use it!

Mine also 32 GB. What's your booting time? Mine is pretty fast about 1 mins.

What makes wildchild better than the others listed above? Also I've noticed that de-odexed roms are supposedly slower than odexed roms? Which one is wildchild and would an odexed rom run better on this phone with the low internal memory?

This is the EXACT problem I have with links2sd on the wildfire s I currently have.
However, everyone suggests, on this rom and others, that if you don't have a class 6 or above card, then don't use apps2sd or data2sd (are these the same?)
I have the stock 2gb card that came in the wildfire s and I believe it's a class 2 or 4 maybe? Is this going to be a problem with the stock card?
Also I think this has to be setup as a gold card or something? I can't remember how it works with this phone
WildChild mentions that he has odex and de-odex? Which one does everyone recommend? Odex has 117 mb free, de-odex only has 77mb free.
Also Wildchild only used app2sd, not data2sd.
Hensemod uses links2sd which is where the super slowdowns on my phone are coming from per above.
How would I use data2sd instead on either of these?
(I tested my sd card speed and it's 6mb a sec easy)

Right... I tested many custom roms and finally stuck in stock sense with dust kernal and link2sd.... Pretty good and stable....

.i used 4EXT Method to partition 1GB from 16gb mmc and the process went pretty good inside 4EXT Recovery. (i tried both 3ext,4ext type ).
when phone rebooted,there is no extra space for ext.partition in freespace app,system app and still getting low space error.?
* m i missing something?
p.s i didnt install any a2sd script using emulator because i dont have it :/
i dont have pc so i cant use gparted method.

Lol u can't just make the partition and suddenly have your apps move to the ext. You need a script.
First of all I would recommend flashing a custom ROM. Try mildwilds oxygen ROM since its very fast, stable, and comes preinstalled with a2sd.
All you need to do at this point since you've already done everything like partitioning and what not, is flash the ROM.
Download it, put it onto your SD, reboot into 4ext and go into the wipe menu. Then format all partitions except SD card. Finally choose install zip from SD card, navigate to the ROM u downloaded and flash it.
Then all the apps u install will be automatically installed onto the ext partition u made on the SD card.

seems like u promoting that ROM, anyway in that way i need a fully bugs free gingrbrd rom and its hardly possible for me to find that ROM,if u know about that gingrbread rom (i love gingrbread GUI) tell me

I dont think he's promoting that ROM. Its a GB based ROM one of the fastest, stable and fully functional ROM.
If you need Sense based GB ROM, try Cool Droid V3.

Nope, he's suggesting it and it's a pretty good GB ROM. If you don't want to use oxygen maybe go for one of the CM7 versions, I quite like the JG version though for sense (which I guess you're used to) RSK team had a fantastic gb rom.

I'm not promoting it... In fact I've never even used it. I was just recommending it to you since from what I've heard, its one of the most stable and bug free ROMs for the desire. As a bonus it comes with a2sd preinstalled, so your apps will be installed to the ext partition out of the box.
The ROM is GB, it just has a jelly bean like ui. If you want something like the stock sense ROM, try using the one dvsk69 suggested above.

oops, I forgot to add punctuation. Jmcclue has linked to some which he has experience of, but RSK did have a sense rom, I ran it for maybe 6 months.

.i used 4EXT Method to partition 1GB from 16gb mmc and the process went pretty good inside 4EXT Recovery. (i tried both 3ext,4ext type ).
when phone rebooted,there is no extra space for ext.partition in freespace app,system app and still getting low space error.?
* m i missing something?
p.s i didnt install any a2sd script using emulator because i dont have it :/
i dont have pc so i cant use gparted method.
help me using 4ext method.

I had exactly same problem with using deo roms. After using this method i can install any custom ROM and 4ext is working for 90%.

Due the fact some custom ROMs have preinstalled 2SD different way, Im using scripts attached below the instructions. If script isnt working ( 1%) of all cases, Im using apps showing storage information - if the system information are showing still low memory it doesnt mean its not working. Its needed to use only external app to see reality.( lot of them is on google play).
I hope it will help, cos Im satisfied with it for 100% on all of my adroids .

hoping for some input guys- I have got here an old Desire which runs 4.1 It is extremly slow and as soon as i install a game it shows me that it runs low on memory
i want to give the phone to my daughter but i need a properly working rom. It should be fast and reliable. No extras needed and i should be able to install a few games without running into trouble.
any recommendatios?

Install any of the Mildwild's ROMs. They are light stable and fast.
If you need Sense, then install the Cool Droid V3.
Ics and jb ROMs are not yet fast enough.

Nikez latest 4.2.2 ROMs are nice and fast ( lacks camera though) , I'm using MIUI XJ now, pretty good everything works as it should and also incredibly fast.

A2SD is integrated in the ROM. Since you already have an ext4 partition, it should get activated automatically. No action required from you.

Please allow me to borrow this thread a little bit instead of starting a new one.
I am also interested in getting a custom ROM, but I just can't live without the default Sense UI. I think I read somewhere that Lee Droid is a popular ROM that has the HTC Sense UI. But I have searched for it using Google and they don't seem to have a dedicated website.
I think there is a member here at XDA with the name LeeDroid. Is that the guy behind this ROM?
Is Lee Droid being actively developed at the moment?
How do I download and flash Lee Droid, or any other ROM? I mean is ROM Manager a must? Or can I use the option "install from zip" in CWM?
So except for Lee Droid, and Cool Droid, what other ROMs are using Sense UI? I just need the basic version, nothing extra flashy and HD, etc. I installed Cyanogen 7 once but didn't like the interface so I removed it.

LeeDroid's Sense ROMs are very good too. Just look for the development thread in the Desire Index. If youre looking for good Sense ROMs here are some of the best ones (in terms of stability, functionality, etc)

To answer your question, Cool Droid V3 is not Lee Droid's ROM. Its by another dev. You just need an ext 3 or 4 partition on your SD card and 4ext recovery installed. You should be good to go.

I see that LeeDroid requires ext3 partition for Data++. I'm not sure what Data++ does but I know it has something to do with memory, and I love memory, and this phone (Desire) is known for constantly running out of memory. So I'm interested in that feature.
I used the Link2SD app for some time (on root, S-OFF and stock ROM with Android 2.29) and it worked pretty well until the Netflix app broke it down for some reason. It just wouldn't play nicely with Link2SD, the Netflix app was the only app that did not work. I ended up in boot loop and having to reflash everything with RUU. Luckily I saved my data.
Which one of those ROMs listed above is best for off-loading the internal phone memory and has minimal change to the UI? Do they all have A2SD integrated? I think this part is essential for this phone to work properly. I can't believe they put in so small memory in it. If I knew I wouldn't have bought it. I was not informed about it, I was just swept in all the hype about it that I didn't pay much attention to that aspect of the phone. I think I was under the impression that at least 512 MB would be available for user data.

Data++ is an hboot. An hboot is the partitioning layout of the desires internal memory. There are 3 partitions: system, data and cache. In order to have the most amount of space for app data, you want a bigger data partition. The Data++ hboot allows you to have this. As you can see on alpharevs website, the data++ allocates the memory like this:
System -180M Cache-5M Data-252M
To use this hboot, the rom's system size must be able to fit into the system partition (in this case 180mb).

So HBOOT is not the actual bootloader (IPL+SPL)? Because that's what I thought it was...

So what I need is "bravo_alphaspl-data.img" file from AlphaRev website and the AN-Droid 2.2.0 data++ file? The AN-Droid file is called "An-Droid_2.2.0_data.zip" and it is 154.8 MB. So this will work?...
I have radio 5.09.05.30_2. I checked the HTC Desire stock radio thread. It says that 5.17.05.23 is the latest. Do I have to upgrade mine?
