GPS/Charging problem - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

My wife has a evo 4g and she just went to florida, used the google gps which worked great. One problem she had though was at some point during the trip it stopped charging, battery died, then shuts off and when rebooted started charging again till it was full with a charge. Tell me if you think im roght but i was thinking it was over heating from being on the charger and having the backlight on full brightness. I had my old evo shut down from this before so i was wondering if there is a setting in the navigation to dim the back light when the navigation is not active? to keep it cooler! Im also gonna have her use the 1 amp charger to instead of the 2 amp so it can be less hot... Any ideas would help guys i want to make sure my wife makes it back trouble free with my daughter.

This overheating is likely caused by GPS overworking the processor.
Once the processor overheats, the batter charging cycle stops.
If you put the phone in front of the AC vent it will help cool it.
Screen dimming and making sure other apps aren't running helps a little.
You will see a similar effect in a poor signal area.

I'm wondering if it would help to take the case off. she has a ballistics case. I'm going to have her take off the case and then dim the screen. I found the option to dim the screen during navigation.

Sprint Galaxy Nexus Overheating

I'm hoping you all might be able to help me. I am having overheating problems with my new Nexus. I have found that any time I have my Nexus charging in my car and my navigation running such that the screen is on, within 10 minutes the battery starts to overheat and the phone stops charging. Through testing and trial & error, here is what I have found.
1. If the phone is charging while using navigation and the screen is on, it will overheat such that it stops charging.
2. If the phone is charging while using navigation and the screen is off, it will NOT overheat.
3. The first two are true whether other radios are turned on (wifi, bluetooth, etc) or not, doesn't matter.
4. If the phone is just charging it is fine.
5. Switching ROMs doesn't help.
6. Also happens with the stock battery and the Seidio extended battery.
7. Happens whether I have the screen brightness on the highest setting or the lowest.
Basically, what I it has come down to, I can't use navigation with the screen on.....which kind of defeats the purpose.
Has anyone else had similar issues?
I am currently running Are-You-Jellin-M1
Reported to be moved to Q&A where this should have been.
Onto the question. Seems like navigation is a really CPU and GPS intensive activity so I would say keep it off the charger.... just doing normal things this phone will heat up and I'm in WiFi. And being on 3G that thing will cook your hand. Only thing I would say is keep it off the charger... and change the timeout for the screen which usually navigation will keep the screen on.

Sure, but the phone is such a battery hog that you go anywhere and then you are without a phone. Then, how do you navigate back.... Navigation is one of the biggest reasons I have a smart phone. I find it absurd that this phone can't use one of it's most important features while charging.
Take your phone back to stock and do the same thing you were doing to overheat your phone. If it still gets REALLY HOT you might need to take your phone in for an exchange. My first nexus had a heating issue and I had to exchange it. It will get warm when using GPS but not so hot your phone acts up. You might also try using a different kernal with hour ROM as well.

You do realize these are dual cores... more cores... more heat. You could possibly have an issue ... and its not a battery hog... had to use Nav this last weekend and it did great. Only lost around ±20% which is not bad using 3G and listening to music with it as well. However I use custom kernels which are undervolted far more than the stock KERNEL.

Just do a warranty exchange in your carriers store. I use GPS all the time while charging and it doesn't heat up. Best advice I can give you. I'm on the same ROM as you also.

What was the temperature outside? Also is your phone in direct sunlight?
The Chicago region has been getting 95°F+ temps, and just from my drive home to work with the A/C on, I have to put my phone in my lunch cooler so it will charge.
You're phone, just sitting idle in direct sunlight on a 90°F day, will heat up your battery past it's 49°C overheat condition within 5 minutes.

Relative temps outside have been cool. I tried on my way into work this morning with a different rom and the temp outside was 75 max and there wasn't any sunlight hitting the phone.
I even tried blasting the air by holding the phone up to the vent and it didn't help. The only way I have found it to cool back down is to turn off the screen.

Boot Loader solving my over heating problem
I was getting some crazy over heating issues especially when I would try
to do a backup using TWRP recovery my screen would even turn odd colors.
I am running a JB CM10 rom and I have been using the ICS boot loader because it
didn't seem to be causing me much problems. I recently decided to change my
boot loader and all of my over heating issues have gone away.

HUGE PROBLEM!!! help

so just a minute ago i had my nexus hooked up to my tv via hdmi mhl and i was using for about 5 min.. then i plugged in my headphone jack .. then a minute latter i smell an electrical burning smell so i look down and i get a google plus notification and the notification light turns red.. even though the screen is on. i pick it up and the bottom portion of the phone is scorching hot and so i quick unplug everything and then the light turned light blue..!!!
i as fast as i could ripped off the battery door cover and yanked out the battery.. waited ten minutes for it to cool down and anytime i reinsert the battery it turns the light on the same light blue and heats up!!!
i think some solder might have melted over.. but does anyone know why??
or has this happened to anyone before??
so it has stopped heating up now.. but it is stuck in that cyan blue color alllll the time off or on..
warranty isnt really an option im pretty sure its voided..
but if anyone wants to buy a cheap 1 month old galaxy nexus with a broken notification light let me know..
haha life ...
balls !
there is no way to get at the circuitry for the noti. light without seperating it from the glass..
guess i cant fix the melted connection
Also media volume doesnt work on external speaker but ringtones and alerts and alarms do.. but all barely work through headphone jack...
I keep mine ventilated when I use the mhl. And under clocked for that reason.
need more high def music...
Found some replacement board parts on eBay and a good deal on a damaged gem nexus so I can swap parts from it..
hopefully I can salvage this thing..

I would play Nova 3 on my TV for hours at stock clock speed and with a ps3 controller connected via Bluetooth and never did it get so hot!!
Mhl is pushing two screens at once and taxing the CPU and gpu, GPU especially. This problem could've happened over time. Too many people ignore keeping electronics cool, even lowly wattage mobile devices. It will happen again if you don't take preventative measures. You're not the first.
need more high def music...
You can get your warranty back if you flash 100% stock ROM via fast boot or toolkit and provided your warranty is still in date (12 months?) See if your issue still occurs.

Just wanted to post my final results...
In case anyone else has this issue..
I replaced one part and all is well again..
if you take apart your phone and underneath the headset and ext speaker module you will see the micro USB port attached to a board.. the board is connected to three others in an L shape via some ribbon cables..
I replaced that whole piece and everything is great... it cost me 17.99 and went from California to new York in 2 days!!

Help! Screen keeps turning back on after turning it off.

My vzw galaxy nexus keeps turning the screen back on as soon as I turn it off, killing my battery at an average of an hr, at most 2... Downloaded an app that tells u which apps are turning the screen on (wakelock) and it says none... App also tells how long phone has been awake vs asleep... Phone been awake for about 95% of the time... Please help... Phone almost unusable unless connected to charger... Oh, btw... As soon as I plug it in to the charger the problem disappears...
Running unrooted, stock 4.2.2 from vzw... If it helps...

I have recently come upon the same problem. Its from a galaxy nexus also from Verizon running 4.2.2 I recently got this gnex as a replacement from a lost gnex. Either refurbished or new the problem starts after I disconnect charger. Have you found any solution?
Sounds like a problem with your USB port.

Yes I tried wake clock but it didn't help. Strangely it happens randomly. I took out the battery for 10 secs put it back in and is working properly. I will wait a while and post back tomorrow morning.

If you've used the app, you should know there's hardly anything random about it. When a particular wakelock has exceptionally high usage, Google about it (can be done from within the app) and get some insight into what is triggering it. Then you can disable/suspend that app/service.

Problem is no longer there. Just stopped doing it. ??????
My dose it when I'm at 100% battery after it drops below 90% stops doing that

Mine was having the same problem, but I followed the advice of an earlier post by Godra and it has stopped turning on automatically. Basically, I used my pocket knife to clean out under the pins in the micro USB charging port. I also bent it up just a little bit (be very careful not to break it) to keep it away from the metal housing, which is a ground. Something must have been shorting one of the pins to ground (the housing) causing it to continuously wake.

solved
Prying or cleaning the USB connector did not help in my case. Battery charge indicator sometimes stayed on, but sometimes not. Battery drained really fast.
I bought a charging flex connector board replacement (they are really cheap on ebay), watched some youtube videos explaining the how to change the board and when my new board arrived, my phone was fixed in under 15 minutes.
My gnex now holds charge for over 24 hours with moderate use.
With Jelly Bean 4.3 installed and a new charging port, it feels like a brand new phone!

Hi,
I have developed an open-souce (GPLv3) app that helps save battery when this happens.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484871
SnooZy Charger turns off the screen on these ghost connections, saving battery consumption by the display. It does not fix the charging issues, but it reduces the battery drain when this happens.

ps: sorry if this is considered as self promotion or xposting but this issue has been reported on multiple threads..
Hi, i had the same problemen as you all, but i solved the problem by remove all the dust from the input of the charger connection from the phone. I think that the dust was maken some kind of shortwire and that that was the reason for it to turn on the screen, after i cleaned all the dust from the charger point in the phone, my problem seems to be solved. Can some one else confirm this?

I happen exactly that, how could you fix it?
Had the same Galaxy Nexus problem with the display switching on sporadically or turning back on seconds after the phone was manually switched off. The display was the number one consumer of energy due to energy statistics even without using the phone. Bluetooth, GPS were disabled and no special apps were running on the phone.
Hint:
The battery statistics graph's detail view logged charging events although the phone was not connected to a USB charger/port. The display was logged as active parallel to these events. So basically the phone thought it was connected to a charger and switched on the display which it normally also does, but since this charging status was repeating over and over, the display wouldn't turn off by itself.
Yesterday, I examined the USB port with a magnifying glass in bright light and noticed quite some fuzz build-up in the port. Otherwise the port looked good and not oxidized or damaged. So I removed the battery and cleaned off the fuzz from the micro USB port. I used a thin thread to loosen the felt-like lint which took me quite some time. Vacuum cleaner didn't work well. Compressed air might be helpful.
What shall I say: The phone charged very well and behaved normal the whole day without any unusual drain and NO pseudo charging events in the battery statistics!
Should this success not persist, I will report ...

Overheating when used as navigation?

I realize this is a worse case scenario, but i used my phone as navigation for the first time today and after maybe 20 minutes of having it on my dash, charging, listeing to bluetooth music while navigating it quit charging and the red notification light started blinking. I had power saver on with the screen at its lowest Automatic Brightness set. I know this is a stress test for it, but lots of other phones I've had didnt have a problem like this. I dont use it as navigation too often, but it cant not charge if i do use it that way.
Anyone elses do this too?

Mine starts to get pretty hot with the basics....browsing..youtube...charging while not using. It's not happening all the time but it gets frustrating. This is my second m8 ( I returned my first for heat issues) so it's happened on both non-rooted m8s.
I went back to the tmobile i bought it from, they hooked it up to a laptop and ran a few tests on it and declared it fine. They said to call corporate tmobile tomorrow (since they took the holiday off today) and tell them whats going on and they can put it in my notes to have the store replace my phone tomorrow.
Anyone else's phone do this? I ask because corporate gave the store the OK to exchange my phone, and if this is a problem with all M8's, theres no point to exchange it.
I am debating on getting a different phone all together. I flashed a few Roms.... Still having the heat issue.

So I was able to trade my phone for a new one at the store,...I'm now past the 14 day trial, so I hope this one is OK.
Are you guys sure it gets that hot? This is the same thing with the M7 and people were saying the same thing. It's thermal conductivity which you guys are feeling. Keep in mind just because your other phones don't feel as hot doesn't mean it's not the same temperature. Here's a video about what happens and how people confuse themselves. The M7 and M8 are different and the M8 should conduct more heat due to it being more metal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqDbMEdLiCs
Although yes, it's hot to the touch, I'm talking about the battery getting so hot it quits charging , the Orange led blinks, and the battery starts going backwards even though it's plugged in to the car charger.
That's why I was making sure if it isn't merely it feels hot, and not actually being hot.
Are you using a 1.5 amp or something higher? I notice when I use large amp charger it'll get hotter than usual, but it does charge quicker.
It's a Verizon generic car charger, 1 amp. I'll be using the replacement phone tomorrow afternoon for navigation, I'll report back if it's any better with it.
I Just found a 2.4 amp Rocmetfish charger that gets good write ups at best buy. Wonder if that would help.....2.4a is a lot more than 1a.

Ha,...no,..it was on top of the dash, and here in S. Florida it was pretty hot (90F). But, with that said, I had the windows up, AC on. My previous phones (I'm a phone-a-holic), the S4, G2, Xperia ZL, and Note 3 all worked fine in the same situation. If its a common occurrence for this particular phone in general I'll deal with it. But if its unique to mine I will exchange it. But I'd rather not have to restore another phone if the new one will act the same way.
Maybe I should mention the phone has a clear hard case on it, too.
Hot day, phone in direct sunlight, phone in case, Bluetooth, screen, data, CPU probably running at max, it's all going to contribute. Obviously the phone couldn't keep up with the power requirements. Do you use an official HTC car charger?
I have no problems with charging using Navigation with Co-pilot, it does get warm, but so has any other phone when using Nav apps. I wouldn't use Google navigation as that doesn't have offline maps and will tax the phone even more.
Thanks for responding,...I had it in power saver mode and auto brightness at its lowest setting. I'm not even sure there is an official HTC car charger,...is there? Maybe it's a by product of being a metal case, but my past phones, the G2 the note 3 and Sony xperia zl never had this problem. If this replacement (I was able to swap for a new one at TMo yesterday)phone does it too then I'll deal with, I just didn't know if it's the phone as a whole, or my particular unit.
