Overheating when used as navigation? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a T-Mobile M8, but didnt get much response, so I'm posting here in hopes of more answers. I realize this is a worse case scenario, but i used my phone as navigation for the first time today and after maybe 20 minutes of having it on my dash, charging, listeing to bluetooth music while navigating it quit charging and the red notification light started blinking. I had power saver on with the screen at its lowest Automatic Brightness set. I know this is a stress test for it, but lots of other phones I've had didnt have a problem like this. I dont use it as navigation too often, but it cant not charge if i do use it that way.
Anyone elses do this too?

Ha,...no,..it was on top of the dash, and here in S. Florida it was pretty hot (90F). But, with that said, I had the windows up, AC on. My previous phones (I'm a phone-a-holic), the S4, G2, Xperia ZL, and Note 3 all worked fine in the same situation. If its a common occurrence for this particular phone in general I'll deal with it. But if its unique to mine I will exchange it. But I'd rather not have to restore another phone if the new one will act the same way.

Maybe I should mention the phone has a clear hard case on it, too.

Hot day, phone in direct sunlight, phone in case, Bluetooth, screen, data, CPU probably running at max, it's all going to contribute. Obviously the phone couldn't keep up with the power requirements. Do you use an official HTC car charger?
I have no problems with charging using Navigation with Co-pilot, it does get warm, but so has any other phone when using Nav apps. I wouldn't use Google navigation as that doesn't have offline maps and will tax the phone even more.

Thanks for responding,...I had it in power saver mode and auto brightness at its lowest setting. I'm not even sure there is an official HTC car charger,...is there? Maybe it's a by product of being a metal case, but my past phones, the G2 the note 3 and Sony xperia zl never had this problem. If this replacement (I was able to swap for a new one at TMo yesterday)phone does it too then I'll deal with, I just didn't know if it's the phone as a whole, or my particular unit.

Hacking the Sony Liveview

Despite the bad reviews I picked up a Liveview yesterday. Was $50 brand new off Craigslist. And surprise surprise, it turned out to be a turd. Well, I don't like to waste money, so I set about modding it. Thought some people here might be interested to see what I did.
So far I've waterproofed the case. Next I'll be building a better strap, one that doesn't make it huge or block the USB port. http://www.jax184.com/projects/liveview/liveview.html has everything I've done so far on it.
Nice i got that thing and it "worked" but still with the having to restart it all the time was very annoying but i ended up sending mine back
So I've been using the Liveview for a couple days, or at least trying to. Even after doing a full reset of the device, reinstalling the software on my phone and removing all the plugins, it has a battery life of about 6-8 hours. In that time I turned the screen on twice, and it briefly lit up to tell me of an incoming call. No texts, no alerts, and I don't have farcebook/twatter/etc turned on. It sat 2 feet from my phone the entire time. If I actually try to use the damn thing to, say, control the media player, the battery goes dead in 2 to 3 hours.
Pathetic...
I've decided I'm going to build it into a custom case for a friend of mine with a much larger battery, since the stock one is completely and utterly useless. So much for my gasket job...
Not sure if the battery is just dying on yours or what but if I never touch the screen, mine lasts for a couple days at least (and that's with alerts!). Sad to hear yours has issues :\
Mine's brand new and running the latest firmware/software with the bare minimum of functionality enabled, so I'm as confused as you.
I have a liveview and i absolutely love it. I dont have any connection issues but i mostly just use it as a watch with out having it connected over bluetooth and the battery lasts for days when i do that. I do have an issue now where i dropped it and the select button on top doesnt work anymore
Can I connect multiple liveviews to my phone?
I just bought 4 of them for $15 a pop !! Sweet
I know I can use it with torque which is cool
what else can I do with them? Can I run album art to it from say player pro? or Pocket Casts?
is there a decent list somewhere of "interesting" things you can do with the little buggers?
Hi, do someone know the dimensions of the battery, because i have one with death batt. and need a replacement.
nice mod! Based on the pictures I can see the battery size in case I need to replace it, by the way using notifications my watch last 2.5 days, using a plugin last only 30minutes or less

+1 I just got one for $15, I wanna find some cool things I can do with it. What have you done to set yours up?
its a pain in the freaking butt. cool potential poor execution.
it constantly gets disconnected when something goes wrong ON THE DROID SIDE. terminating the app and relaunching it solves the problem for X period of time (few hours ??)
the most convenient access is also the worst designed. the watch band. YOU CAN NOT CHARGE IT WHILE IN THE WATCH BAND.
what freaking moron though that was a good idea to force us to remove it (VERY difficult) to charge it.
if the software bugs get worked out I may look into modding the stinking socket so I can charge it while in watch mode (thinking of RIVETING the case to the band) then I won't need the little watch pin thingy that is keeping me from charging it while its in the watch band.
and there is just not that many "cool" apps to use for it yet or the few out their are poorly executed.
how hard can it be to reliably push the freaking album art to the watch ?

2 Generations of Liveviews
Just to be clear, there are 2 versions of this device floating about... The older one goes for around $20 and is not much more than a novelty... The newer model runs around $100 and seems to have fixed the battery life issue... One should look at the Pebble once it is available as a possible alternative...

I started creating a usable gui for the openliveview project. Theo openliveview project is an open source reimplementation Of the liveview app.
You van follow the development in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422106&page=26
Note: you have to uninstall the liveview app bevore you van install openliveview

Where can you find one for 15 bucks? Even if it did nothing, I'd want it for 15 bucks, just to have as a key for my phone using tasker. I supposed I could get any old bluetooth headset, but I wanted something wearable.

Yeah, $15 is AWESOME!
$18 with Free shipping on ebay buy it now is the best price I can find so far.
I bought four of them and donated 2 to the local hackerspace.
Would be wicked to control more than one at once. I'm trying to find some chick to wear two as earrings.
Perhaps one controlled with Sony app and one Open Liveview App each for one mac address.
Contrary to earlier post, I seem to be able to have both Sony and Openliveview apps installed at once (though haven't tried RUNNING both) yet.
My battery life across the two that I've evaluated and (a third I lost to the ocean) seems significantly better than the average reported above.
But a LOT of variables have changed since the OP. New firmware, new app, new phone, new bt stack, new android versions...
My impression IIRC is that this thing is ROCK SOLID on CyanogenMod7 or CM9 on evo 3d.

Note 3 powering off by itself

Hello, I would like to start off by saying I'm new here AND in Android culture. I was an iPhone user, but decided to swith to something different. Since I live in Europe (in Lithuania, to be exact) I figured that it wouldn't mean anything here if I bough a blacklisted T-mobile Note 3 4G LTE phone. Now to the main point - I got the phone yesterday and noticed something suspicious. Firstly, it came with aftermarket charger and usb cable (not usb 3.0, just a simple micro-usb to usb 2.0). My first problem is that when I am charging Note while it's on, it almost doesn't charge at all. Only when I turn off the phone I can expect the phone to charge to 80-90 percent in 8 HOURS! That's insane! Needless to say, I WILL be getting original samsung charger... Now other complaint is that the area around camera gets hot even when changing settings. Not really sure what causes that, so I did 4 factory resets yesterday.... Today it gets warm, but nothing suspicous. Disabled KNOX and other crappy programs. Not sure if it's the chargers fault, but battery life sucks. Phone drains the battery like crazy, the percentage drops about 1 in minute or so. When I use the power saving, reduce the brightness, use airplane mode, it's better, but even If i charge it and use my phone at the same time, the battery percentage still keeps going down
Now, the biggest wtf moment is when the phone is not plugged to charge, if i press the sleep button, the display turns black and after a few second the phone shuts itself off. No sounds, no vibration or notifications, it just silently goes to sleep. I can only turn it on again. I could even successfuly unlock the phone to use with a sim card, the phone is also making fun of me! Not really sure what's happening with my note that i bought off ebay and spent quite the amount of money, but I am starting to get into depression...
Please, if anyone has ANY idea what the hell is happening (apart the stupid charger), i would really appreciate any answers. And sorry for the long post and my english, as it is not my native language!

Could be a counterfeit - Check the serial with Samsung and make sure it has all the crazy samsung sensor, the counterfeits usually don't
Make sure the power button isn't sticking, I had an iphone 4s that did the same thing and it was due to power button hardware problem.
For the charger just get a cheap one off ebay with the right power ratings(find them for your country on samsung.com) and I find Toshiba sells replacement USB3 cables for their hard drives really cheap - That can save you 30$
Blacklisted IMEI phones are a gamble, if you can prove it's a counterfeit then ebay should refund you but it might also be a phone some bad man/woman/other stole and might have been abused. If it's the latter then that's a shame that he ended up stealing from two people...

Thank you for your answer
Well, the power button isn't sticking, I can clearly feel and heal it click when I am pressing it. The IMEI under the battery matches the IMEI in android system settings. I checked my IMEI on swappa and it says that phone was reported stolen (yay..). On imei.info site it says a different model (n9005 instead of n900t), but whatever.
Thank you for the info about toshiba usb 3.0 cables, might as well buy one right away
To be honest, I feel like it's a faulty item (even though seller assured my that the phone is working like new and that he replaced the battery). The battery life, as I said, is terrible, it doesn't hold a charge, the vibration motor seems very cheap (it's too strong, it sounds very strange), speaker seems to be not-ok too (distorted sound not even on full volume), screen-capture with palm doesn't even seem to work properly, I can't choose various music eq's (it says that this eq is not supported with speaker), I can't get my sim to work with this phone. Well, according to the ebay ad, phone should be working properly without any problems. The fact that the battery or charging mechanism sucks determined that was a lie...
Now I'm wondering if this info would be enough for paypal to refund me, because the phone is almost unsable (with self shutting of while it's not charging) and sad battery life...
Sorry for double post, but I noticed something very strange...
Well, turns out, that when the airplane mode is off, the phone gets very hot around the camera and battery is draining like mad. BUT, when I turn on the airplane mode, note cools off, battery still keeps draining, but it seems that not as much... Anyways, is it possible that the cellular module or something like that could be a cause of all my problems? (and to keep in mind that I haven't been able to use any sim with it, as it keeps saying "searching")
Sim won't work unless it's unlocked.
My suggestions are to:
1. Stock restore and then root the device.
2. Just sign in to phone using WiFi and download chain fires region lock away. Roughly $3 US.
3. Then try out Sim card, see if you can get signal.
If you can get that far, it will tell us what other kind of problems the phone is having on its own. Sounds to me at the moment it is trying very hard to find the signal and causing battery drain issues. The random shut downs could be due to the phone over heading and shutting down as a fail safe.

I did everything exactly as mentioned in the thread that you've posted the link to. First of all, booting logo changed, then my phone became unlocked (when I inserted the SIM, it didn't ask for unlock code). However, even with apn settings, it still says "searching" and gets quite hot in the upper-left side of the phone (when screen is facing towards me). I was really hoping this would help, but it didn't do much, as it seems... Anyways, I appreciate your good deed trying to help me I'm really desperate to make this phone work with my phone, but can't seem to manage to do that, which is very sad...

Mine starts to get pretty hot with the basics....browsing..youtube...charging while not using. It's not happening all the time but it gets frustrating. This is my second m8 ( I returned my first for heat issues) so it's happened on both non-rooted m8s.
I went back to the tmobile i bought it from, they hooked it up to a laptop and ran a few tests on it and declared it fine. They said to call corporate tmobile tomorrow (since they took the holiday off today) and tell them whats going on and they can put it in my notes to have the store replace my phone tomorrow.
Anyone else's phone do this? I ask because corporate gave the store the OK to exchange my phone, and if this is a problem with all M8's, theres no point to exchange it.
I am debating on getting a different phone all together. I flashed a few Roms.... Still having the heat issue.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
So I was able to trade my phone for a new one at the store,...I'm now past the 14 day trial, so I hope this one is OK.
Are you guys sure it gets that hot? This is the same thing with the M7 and people were saying the same thing. It's thermal conductivity which you guys are feeling. Keep in mind just because your other phones don't feel as hot doesn't mean it's not the same temperature. Here's a video about what happens and how people confuse themselves. The M7 and M8 are different and the M8 should conduct more heat due to it being more metal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqDbMEdLiCs
Although yes, it's hot to the touch, I'm talking about the battery getting so hot it quits charging , the Orange led blinks, and the battery starts going backwards even though it's plugged in to the car charger.
That's why I was making sure if it isn't merely it feels hot, and not actually being hot.
Are you using a 1.5 amp or something higher? I notice when I use large amp charger it'll get hotter than usual, but it does charge quicker.
It's a Verizon generic car charger, 1 amp. I'll be using the replacement phone tomorrow afternoon for navigation, I'll report back if it's any better with it.
I Just found a 2.4 amp Rocmetfish charger that gets good write ups at best buy. Wonder if that would help.....2.4a is a lot more than 1a.

[Q] Phone charged, but now won't turn on. Suggestions?

Okay, so a little background. I was at the gym last night, warming up with jogging on a treadmill. While I was running, I was listening to music through these horrible, horrible headphones. When they are plugged in, sometimes the phone will skip tracks forward or backward for no reason whatsoever, even when I didn't press a button. This was happening last night at the gym, and then all of the sudden, I heard this static crack and my phone turned off. Now my phone won't turn back on. I have tried everything. The phone was charged to about 75%, was running the new unofficial CM12 ROM, and was perfectly fine before the headphones zapped the life out of my phone. I'm almost positive it had nothing to do with the ROM. I have tried almost everything to get it to turn back on, holding the power button for a full minute, the power up and volume down combo for a hard reset, letting the phone sit for a while, even letting it sit on the charger for a while. It won't even take a charge now. It's been a full 12 hours of phone inactivity. Any suggestions?
If it still does not power up, your choices are:
Instant replacement: Verizon store
If you have 6 days with another phone: get online with HTC and get warranteed
I've had better luck dealing with HTC directly. Third party refurbs have a bad reputation
on many posts all over.
Hope it suddenly starts so you can keep trucking...

So you think it's broken? It just seems weird for it to be broken after it was working perfectly fine. Plus, I am trying to buy a subsidized Nexus 6 through Verizon, but it's not in stores yet, so I don't want to get the phone replaced if I'm going to buy a new one. It's a dilemna

Hope it doesn't come to this: if it's dead, HTC owes you a warranty repair/replace. You don't want to be left
with a doorstop. Worst case: you get it fixed, treat new one like your Princess, then sell it on Swappa or EBay
when you get your hands on the Nexus 6.

I had the power button fail in mine. Drove me nuts too. In the end it wasn't all that terrible to replace and cost about $10. what happens if you sorta play with the power button and wiggle it etc...?
You are still getting the charge light too right?
Success! It finally charges now! It wouldn't charge before. For a whole day it wouldn't turn on with any button combo. For a whole day it wouldn't take any charge. Until now. I plugged it into my laptop and voila! The orange light started flashing, and it finally got to the point where the orange light is stable. It is currently now accepting charge from a power outlet, and I assume it will turn on. I'm not gonna push it yet though. But now it charges, so it will work! Thank god.
A valuable lesson was learned throughout this process (and it applies to daily life): never give up and always be persistent! Even if you have a good connection, and suddenly those connections break, you can still rebuild them again. You can still fix these connections (relationships in life) will a little hard work!
My phone just did this again. This time I'm guessing it is a bug with the unofficial CM12 Android 5.0 ROM on high volume. When my headphones are in and I'm playing music, usually at the highest volume, the phone sort of makes this weird static noise and then turns off. Hopefully this time my phone turns on, and hopefully it doesn't take a day and a half to accept a charge. I fixed it before by pluggin it into my laptop, but now that won't work. I guess it's a waiting game. Idk, I just hope it works
You sure its not your headsets causing the problems? I have ran the same ROM vol high using my klipsch earbuds and no issues. Will test again to see

I'm not totally sure. I mean it still could be. I hate these damn headphones. It's fairly annoying though tbh. I have no idea when it will be open to accepting a charge. I just kind of have to see if it'll turn on. I guess I can check again with another pair of headphones when groupon finally sends them. I'm just nervous that if it happens again, I'll have to wait again. Let me know what happens with your phone. Also, I'm open to any suggestions on how to turn my phone back on or charge it again. Thanks.

It depends. Like the first time it shut off I was listening to one song on full volume. Then after it finally booted up, I was listening to the same song on high volume and it turned off again, but that time it booted back up. This time however, I was listening to a different song and it happened. It's not really a matter of songs played, but rather which song is played. I'm not totally sure though. It's just stupid.
OK I played 4 songs now and did hear a buzzing sound but phone didn't shut off or anything. Remember this ROM is still alpha build status. You could try backing up your phone and flash another ROM and see if you can recreate the issue. That way you know for sure if it was ROM or headphone related
I've heard this buzzing in practically every aosp ROM for the m7. It isn't often but does happen occasionally. It had never caused a reboot or shutdown. My guess is that the headphones are bad. I would stop using those lol.
I guess it was the headphones. Finally got new ones, and everything is fine. I think 5.0 definitely aided it though. My phone turned back on a few nights ago, and I forgot to mention it. Every time I've had to wait almost exactly 24 hours to charge it again. It almost seems like a defense mechanism. But alas, it worked!

While in the Woods..

Hey guys,
I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S9 and previously owned a Huawei Nexus 6p, both devices, while in the woods, behave very strangely. Since I don't own the 6p anymore, I'm only going to speak of the S9, which is brand new and in brand new condition. But this used to happen on my 6p as well!
A good 75% of the time, when I take my phone out of my pocket, it will be at the boot pattern lock screen. The screen will be on and the battery will have drained substantially. Somehow, the device is rebooting while in my pocket. This ONLY happens when I go camping in the woods here in Ontario. NEVER happens any other time. And it won't happen just once or twice. It'll happen a dozen times over the course of a day easily. My battery, while out in the woods, never lasts more than a day, even though I almost never use it.
Yes. I'm positive I'm not pocket rebooting. I'll move the phone into my cargo pocket, which has TONS of room. Same thing. I'm running stock Samsung, no root, nothing. The stock experience so far has been very smooth and stable. I've had no reboots, very little lags, etc. I step into the woods, BAM, starts acting a fool.
I have a Garmin watch connected via BT, but the watch is ALWAYS connected. NEVER had any issues with the Garmin device. Thought I'd mention this, since it's the only device I have connected to my S9.
Anyone else experiencing this? Or do I sound totally crazy here?? It bothers me because I don't want to go camping with a power bank. I'm often resorted to turning the device off completely and leaving it in my backpack, which isn't ideal.

Hey guys,
I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S9 and previously owned a Huawei Nexus 6p, both devices, while in the woods, behave very strangely.
Check if Settings > Display > Navigation Bar > Hard Press Home Button & Unlock With Home Button are disabled, otherwise it is very easy to turn the screen on when you pull the phone out of your pocket, was happening to me for a while until I realised what was happening
Battery drain could be coming from low carrier signal forcing the phone to search for a signal a lot more than usual
I'd stay out of those woods! ?

Those settings were actually one of the first things I disabled on my S9. SUPER ANNOYING, but those aren't the causes for my strange behavior. I've experienced this same issue with all those disabled, as well as on a completely different device that doesn't even have those settings.

Really?? I did not realize this was a thing. Something to keep my eye out. Most places I go camping, even though deep in the woods, still has cellular reception, but usually not LTE, only 3G or no-G even some times. Are you able to enlighten me on when the S9 drains the most when it comes to it's carrier signal? I just want to know how to set my phone next time I go into the woods for best troubleshooting.
Thanks for the reply!

Last I checked, they are probe-free woods. My phone is probably the one getting the probe.

I generally have 4G most places I am so I can't help there, but I would try setting the preferred connection type to whatever you seem to get in the woods the most, so if it drops to H+ or E or whatever you get when 3/4G isn't available, set it to 2G or whatever the lowest available is in connection settings, could be that searching for a 3/4G signal constantly is causing that drain so telling it not to even look for one could help, but also could be that this radio type is causing that drain itself, maybe 3/4G signals are a lot less power hungry regardless of whether or not the phone is set manually to them or not
You could test it in the house now, set it to 2G and do a battery drain test vs 3/4G you usually have, if there is no extra drain in the house, there should be no extra drain in the woods, but if there is then 2G and lesser obviously uses a lot more power

This guy gets it. You have been warned, lol. If you have a logcat I'm sure someone would be able to identify the problem.

Haha!
Logcat is a good idea. I think the next time I'm out there, I'll pull one and we'll see what's what.
Should be going back into the woods real soon. Blair Witch be damned.
