[Q] question about poor signal and updating radio, pri, nv - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've had my evo for a little something close to 3 years. Most of that time i've been in the Los Angeles area and get full bars pretty much everywhere. I recently moved out of state for a few months to a sprint dead zone and was using a microcell. Just came back to the LA area a few weeks ago and my signal strength has been pretty poor compared to what I used to get.
Sitting at my pc I've got 1 bar of signal. Going outside it'll usually go up to 3.
I haven't updated my radio, prl, NV, wimax or hboot. Currently using 2.15.00.11.19, which i guess is the radio (says baseband version) and it looks like that's a few versions behind. Although the numbering scheme for the radio's is a bit confusion since it seems to go from .11.19 to .04.08, .05.02, .08.08 - not sure how .08 is newer then .11
My hboot appears to be 0.97. Not sure how to check pri or nv version - or even what pri or nv is.
Anyhow, is it worth trying to update the radio or pri or nv? Any chance of mucking up the phone or can rollback to my current version if a newer version mucks something up? I would assume I don't need to touch hboot?

Who is running 3.4X radio's on Verizon?

Did you think it was an improvement over 3.37.78 or not? Any better GPS locks?
Hello. I am running ROM 1.15.VZW & radio 3.42.30 & no GPS signal. I went thru the whole process of unlocking it but it looks like there is no luck. I still don't get any signal. I even waited outside in open air for 30min under the LA's heat but no signal. Maybe I did something wrong.
I'm running that newest radio and I haven't noticed much of a difference at all. Maybe some weird radio bugs were fixed, but nothing you'll see in day to day use. It's not really worth the trouble, IMO.
I am not sure how we can unlock the GPS on Verizon touch. I went thru all the steps of unlocking and still there is no signal. Any body out there that have tried this to see if it really unlockes the GPS or not?

This personally worked for me on my Verizon XV6900: LINKY
The attached cabs in that post are both GPS registries, not to be confused with the carrier cabs. Pick from the two, I recommend the Telus. Also I said V13 in the post, but obviously you should flash the latest ROM when you finish flashing everything else.
There was a thread on this very same issue a little while back, the consensus was there was virtually no difference between the two, despite the larger number the 3.42 radio was in no way really 'superior.' In fact, some people reported better reception on 3.37. Having used both, I would agree they're indistinguishable.
i get 6-8 locks in google maps within a minute and im using 3.42.30
I'm on Sprint... And I use to use 3.42.50 and my signal was not really good. So I recently switched to 3.37 and my signal is great... I have a question, is it not smart to use a Verizon radio on sprint..?
I used .50 bell for many months. Switched back to VZ radio a few weeks ago. A very slight increase in reception. I can go about 3 feet further in my house and still talk than I could with the bell radio. No real diff though.

Very bad WiFi connection?

I apologize if this has been asked before. I searched (possible that I didn't search hard enough) but couldn't find anything.
Anyway, is it normal for the EVO 4G to have pretty pitiful Wi-Fi? What I mean is that I get terrible reception. My girlfriend's blackberry and my two brother's 2nd gen iPod Touch's get great Wi-Fi throughout the whole house. Both of my parents have notebooks and they don't have any issues either. If I'm about an inch from the wireless router I get full bars and 12mbps down (it's a G router) 12mbps up (according to the speedtest.net app), but the connection speed and signal immediately drops a significant amount as soon as I leave the room. The other devices don't have this problem. They maintain most of the speed and only lose a little bit of signal strength.
I know Sprint released an OTA update prior to Froyo that was supposed to address WiFi issues, but I was never able to do it because I was rooted and running a custom ROM (not based on that OTA update) prior to that. Now I'm running the latest Cyanogen nightly and I still get pitiful Wi-Fi
Anyone else experiencing similar issues?
Thanks!
Have you flashed the latest radio's?
My wifi reception was mediocre at best on 2.1, and when I went to Fresh 3.1.0.1 Froyo it pretty much was the same. Funny thing is though, I had only flashed the most recent radio (.28), I hadn't flashed the wimax radio because I don't live in a 4g area and didn't see the need for it. A few days after I flashed the new rom and radio I decided that it would probably be good to keep everything up to date regardles of whether it was needed or not, so I flashed the latest wimax radio. All of a sudden I have excellent wifi reception, before I could barely get a working wifi signal 20 feet from the router, now I get the same signal I was getting at 20 feet from the router 75 feet away.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea why it did this after flashing the wimax radio, as I was under the impression that the wimax radio had nothing to do with wifi, could be a coincidence, but it worked for me. The highest I ever got before at 20 feet from the router was 2 bars, now at the same place I get full bars, and I now get 2-3 bars at the opposite end of the house from the router where I got no wifi signal at all before.

Awesome I'll give that a shot!
Yeah it makes no sense at all, and even if it was only a coincidence I'm still willing to try it. I too upgraded to the latest radio but skipped the 4G radio update because for 1, my area doesn't have 4G, and because the ROM I'm currently using doesn't support 4G yet
Thanks again! I'll report back with my updated findings!
Unfortunately I don't think I helped my wifi signal definitely worth a shot though. I'm going to Nandroid backup my cm6 and flash to a rom based of sprint's Froyo update to see if wifi signal strength increases.

[Q] How to upgrade PRI

Does anyone know how to upgrade the PRI version on the Incredible. I have an AMOLED Incredible and my friend just bought a SLCD Incredible. Sitting side by side running a speed test, his phone is almost twice as fast as mine. Looking at the settings the only difference I can see is the PRI versions are different. Mine is 1.28_002 and his is 1.70_002. Does anyone know if this could be the reason why his is faster or perhaps it could be something else? If so, does anyone know how to update the PRI version?
I would also like to know how to do this, and what the latest stock verizon pri for the incredible is? I would also like to know if pri's are different for each verizon phone or just the same pri for the entire verizon network.
Sorry if this sound dumb im kimda a noob.
I updated mine by dialing *228 and choosing option 2
I am pretty sure *228 only updates the PRL not the PRI, But i could be wrong. Anyone else know if this is true or not?
well I was averaging 2 bars were I live with really slow data and lost signals on calls. Did the *228 with option 2 . Now I get full bars and excellent service. My pri is 1.70_002 and prl is 52169. So I'm assuming it worked.

You are correct. It would seem that the member you quoted is mistakenly thought the topic was in regards to the PRL rather than the PRI.
Me too!
I would also like to know how to update the PRI. My PRL is up to date after a *228, but PRI is still at 1.28_002.

since the evo radios work on our phones i wonder if anything else is compatible.

I'm skeptical that the EVO PRI would be compatible. Seems like the PRI and PRL are more unique to the specific wireless carrier.
I may be wrong, but I won't be the first to find out if it doesn't work.
Anybody....
It's looking like nobody has an answer for this question. Maybe I'm a little impatient.

I doubt EVO PRI files would even flash; they are specific to the device. Anyhow, if you look on the EVO forums it seems a lot of people who manually updated their PRIs experienced data connectivity issues, so I wouldn't sweat it. I just returned a reconditioned AMOLED Dinc that had PRI 1.50, and compared to my first and current AMOLED DInc (which have 1.28), it wasn't any better or worse. Wikipedia seems to suggest that PRI is network resource control, although I didn't find anything specific to CDMA networks. If anything, I would bet it's the comm protocol compiled for specific chipsets' version/assembly date, thus the reason why various SLCD owners' have moderate --> High PRI version #s.
I too would like to know if incredible users can upgrade their pri like the evo guys

[Q] Radios-understanding speed tests/dBm

I've been playing around with the 7.28 and 9.01 radios. My dBms are higher with 9.01 but the dowloads on speedtest are generally better on 7.28. The upload is usually slightly better on 9.01. I want good signal strength and good 3G. I am understanding it correctly that dBm is signal strength and speedtest shows your 3g?
Also, I'm on PRL 52999. I live in Alabama and used to be on Alltel. I'm on a Verizon plan now. Would changing to a hybrid prl inprove my signal strength? I've got great signal in Montgomery but get lower test results and dbms at my house in the suburbs and at my parent's lake house. I used to get better signal strength but it's gone down recently. Maybe there are tower's damaged by April's tornados.
When it comes to dBm, a LOWER number is better. It means you have a stronger signal. That could answer why your downloads are better on 7.28 which has a lower dBm, correct?
Also, when I flashed a hybrid PRL (I'm in NY and CT), I actually had worse signal, and my 3g speeds were slower, but of course, your mileage may vary.
At work I average about -49 to -55 on 9.01 and -52- to -59 on 7.28. So, the dBm on 9.01 should be better. After a while of 9.01 settling in it seems the upload speeds have increased. Maybe I jsut tested too quickly.
I could always try the hybrid prl and then change it back if no increase. In Montgomery the signal is great but in the suburbs not as much. I had much better signal in the suburbs before I went to Cyanogenmod 7. I understand that it doesn't show as many signal bars. Virtuous used to show 4/4 bars. My wife's Env always seems to have more bars.
Can a rooted droid with cyanogenmod 7 receive prls pushed from Verizon? I know *228 doesn't work and you hve to go back to a sense ROM to update the prl that way.
Every time I've run *228 on CyanogenMod 7.03 I've gotten a response saying that my roaming capabilites were updated successfully. The only difference is see when I do this when on stock Sense is that the phone reboots itself right after, I have to manually reboot with CM7.
I've done *228 and its worked fine on CM7, you just don't have access to the menu that lets you manually update PRLs. As for data speeds, they vary so much even in the same location with the same radio, its hard to tell if one radio is appreciably better than another in that regard. Also I've found that the speedtest.net app is super inconsistent and buggy, I'd recommend this browser based test instead: http://i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.html
Verizon is going to push the latest hybrid prl. How long should it take to show up on my phone? Do I need to *228 after that? They said a hybrid prl may benefit me in my area since it was once a huge Alltel area.

Be sure you're on a Sense 1.0 rom, and do a *228. If they said they'll push it, then I don't see why you can't try it now. Then once you do a *228 (or even a *22899 if you want to skip the menus), reboot and see if you have a new PRL.
So I won't get the prl update if I'm on Cyanogenmod? Will I have to flash to my backed up sense rom for a few hours and hope it pushes then?

No, the higher number the better. -30dBm is better than -40dBm. Since -30 is closer to 0 than -40, it is actually a higher number.

all true....too bad my coverage sucks regardless what I do. tried every combo of prl and radios and still average at -92dBm. sprint users average in mid -70's. I'm close to a tower but it must be weak or damaged

2.22.401.5 update

Right so since I updated the phone to as per thread title and since then my reception has been craps. Where I had reception before I ain't getting any now. Now I'm s off and super cid. Tried all off the wwe radios and where I would get somewhat better reception I would loose my high speed data all I would pick up is edge data( sheer useless). Then I tried flashing previous updates and downgrading and upgrading but nothing. It's only a new SIM card this 4 months.
Flashed new roms just for the sake of it and nothing.
Anyone else having the same problem
I'd like to see more responses to this - I've seen a couple of reports of this in the ARHD thread, could anyone else confirm if they have noticed any loss of reception quality?
I have the unbranded M8 (BS_US001). I went s/off and SuperCID, but could never get better than HSPA+ (5Mb down) on any ROM (ARHD, Maximus, Viper) until I changed firmware to 2.23.502.3 with an AT&T RUU. I finally have true LTE (35-40Mb) that I should be getting I my area.

Weird because I actually have very good data reception and speeds. Saw on some local sites that they're happy with their LTE speeds(In major cities, LTE available only in like 4spots in this country...lol) reaching 17mbps =o/ Where I'm at in the middle of nowhere, I only get HSPA+ but still manage speeds 23-26mbps, which is clearly faster than some of the LTE speeds they get in major cities.
Oh and I'm also on 2.22.401.5(HTC__203) Completely stock.
