[Q] Radios-understanding speed tests/dBm - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been playing around with the 7.28 and 9.01 radios. My dBms are higher with 9.01 but the dowloads on speedtest are generally better on 7.28. The upload is usually slightly better on 9.01. I want good signal strength and good 3G. I am understanding it correctly that dBm is signal strength and speedtest shows your 3g?
Also, I'm on PRL 52999. I live in Alabama and used to be on Alltel. I'm on a Verizon plan now. Would changing to a hybrid prl inprove my signal strength? I've got great signal in Montgomery but get lower test results and dbms at my house in the suburbs and at my parent's lake house. I used to get better signal strength but it's gone down recently. Maybe there are tower's damaged by April's tornados.

When it comes to dBm, a LOWER number is better. It means you have a stronger signal. That could answer why your downloads are better on 7.28 which has a lower dBm, correct?
Also, when I flashed a hybrid PRL (I'm in NY and CT), I actually had worse signal, and my 3g speeds were slower, but of course, your mileage may vary.

At work I average about -49 to -55 on 9.01 and -52- to -59 on 7.28. So, the dBm on 9.01 should be better. After a while of 9.01 settling in it seems the upload speeds have increased. Maybe I jsut tested too quickly.
I could always try the hybrid prl and then change it back if no increase. In Montgomery the signal is great but in the suburbs not as much. I had much better signal in the suburbs before I went to Cyanogenmod 7. I understand that it doesn't show as many signal bars. Virtuous used to show 4/4 bars. My wife's Env always seems to have more bars.

Can a rooted droid with cyanogenmod 7 receive prls pushed from Verizon? I know *228 doesn't work and you hve to go back to a sense ROM to update the prl that way.

Every time I've run *228 on CyanogenMod 7.03 I've gotten a response saying that my roaming capabilites were updated successfully. The only difference is see when I do this when on stock Sense is that the phone reboots itself right after, I have to manually reboot with CM7.

I've done *228 and its worked fine on CM7, you just don't have access to the menu that lets you manually update PRLs. As for data speeds, they vary so much even in the same location with the same radio, its hard to tell if one radio is appreciably better than another in that regard. Also I've found that the speedtest.net app is super inconsistent and buggy, I'd recommend this browser based test instead: http://i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.html

Verizon is going to push the latest hybrid prl. How long should it take to show up on my phone? Do I need to *228 after that? They said a hybrid prl may benefit me in my area since it was once a huge Alltel area.

Be sure you're on a Sense 1.0 rom, and do a *228. If they said they'll push it, then I don't see why you can't try it now. Then once you do a *228 (or even a *22899 if you want to skip the menus), reboot and see if you have a new PRL.

So I won't get the prl update if I'm on Cyanogenmod? Will I have to flash to my backed up sense rom for a few hours and hope it pushes then?

No, the higher number the better. -30dBm is better than -40dBm. Since -30 is closer to 0 than -40, it is actually a higher number.

all true....too bad my coverage sucks regardless what I do. tried every combo of prl and radios and still average at -92dBm. sprint users average in mid -70's. I'm close to a tower but it must be weak or damaged

Very bad WiFi connection?

I apologize if this has been asked before. I searched (possible that I didn't search hard enough) but couldn't find anything.
Anyway, is it normal for the EVO 4G to have pretty pitiful Wi-Fi? What I mean is that I get terrible reception. My girlfriend's blackberry and my two brother's 2nd gen iPod Touch's get great Wi-Fi throughout the whole house. Both of my parents have notebooks and they don't have any issues either. If I'm about an inch from the wireless router I get full bars and 12mbps down (it's a G router) 12mbps up (according to the speedtest.net app), but the connection speed and signal immediately drops a significant amount as soon as I leave the room. The other devices don't have this problem. They maintain most of the speed and only lose a little bit of signal strength.
I know Sprint released an OTA update prior to Froyo that was supposed to address WiFi issues, but I was never able to do it because I was rooted and running a custom ROM (not based on that OTA update) prior to that. Now I'm running the latest Cyanogen nightly and I still get pitiful Wi-Fi
Anyone else experiencing similar issues?
Thanks!
Have you flashed the latest radio's?
My wifi reception was mediocre at best on 2.1, and when I went to Fresh 3.1.0.1 Froyo it pretty much was the same. Funny thing is though, I had only flashed the most recent radio (.28), I hadn't flashed the wimax radio because I don't live in a 4g area and didn't see the need for it. A few days after I flashed the new rom and radio I decided that it would probably be good to keep everything up to date regardles of whether it was needed or not, so I flashed the latest wimax radio. All of a sudden I have excellent wifi reception, before I could barely get a working wifi signal 20 feet from the router, now I get the same signal I was getting at 20 feet from the router 75 feet away.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea why it did this after flashing the wimax radio, as I was under the impression that the wimax radio had nothing to do with wifi, could be a coincidence, but it worked for me. The highest I ever got before at 20 feet from the router was 2 bars, now at the same place I get full bars, and I now get 2-3 bars at the opposite end of the house from the router where I got no wifi signal at all before.

Awesome I'll give that a shot!
Yeah it makes no sense at all, and even if it was only a coincidence I'm still willing to try it. I too upgraded to the latest radio but skipped the 4G radio update because for 1, my area doesn't have 4G, and because the ROM I'm currently using doesn't support 4G yet
Thanks again! I'll report back with my updated findings!
Unfortunately I don't think I helped my wifi signal definitely worth a shot though. I'm going to Nandroid backup my cm6 and flash to a rom based of sprint's Froyo update to see if wifi signal strength increases.

Evo 3G really slow, connecting from out of state?

Hello, I have noticed that ever since I have gotten my EVO that the 3G speeds are insanely slow. I've ran speedtests all over the Los Angeles area and they average download speed never exceeds 1 Mbps. Anyways, I have been without proper internet since I have moved, so I have been USB tethering to my PC. This has compelled me to look into the slow 3G matter more. I ran a speedtest from my PC browser and noticed that the central server(gold star) it recommends is in KS and im in CA. This is suggesting that the best speedtest is in KS, meaning that I am probably getting 3G connection out of state
Is this even possible? And how can I adjust my 3G connection?
Well there are never radios which could potentially help, but a lot of that data speed just varies.

Thanks for the suggestiom, i've already updated the PRI, WiMax and Radio to the latest(I never read about NV or HBoot updares, so i'll stay away from those for the time being). I just updated to the deodexed version of the latest rooted HTC sense 3.70 update. Results have been constant from stock up until this point though.
Yea my 3g at times are like but I notice it when I flash different radios & prl from new to old they say u should always stay updated but notice the best results when I use the old radio n old prl but now I use the old radio and the new prl 1.90 get results n u should playing with the home agents
YKGHTC EVO XDA
I would have agree with the OP. I live in the Atlanta GA area and typically where I would I get 5+ bars of signal, but I get speeds averaging .600 mbps, its ridiculous. With my old Hero I would always get +1.5 mbps in the same area. Now there have been times where I would get 1.5 to 2.1 mbps on my Evo on 3G... but a lot of the times it would only last for a day or 2. Then I come back to work the next morning and these speeds are back to being craptastic even while still displaying 5+ bars.
At home its always been worse. But I would still be able to run Pandora and run a 4 minute or less youtube video on regular quality without too much stutter. Now I wouldn't dare use data like that on my Evo w/o flipping on WiFi now though. Its pretty ridiculous at this point...

[Q] Poor cell signal- often roaming

I've had the E4GT for less than 24hrs, and biggest issue is the less than splendid cell reception. Sitting in my living room i used to get 2-3 bars- this thing constantly throws into roaming. I updated my PRL, Profile, and Firmware. Didn't know what the latest PRL was that was out.
I know this thing has only been out a few days, so i understand some bugs. Is anyone else having signal issues where they didn't before?
I'm really trying rock this for a couple days stock before i root the hell out of it, lol.
Thanks for any input. Link me to resources if you like, i have no issues reading up on my own if this is a common issue.

Ditto! I even have an Air Rave and reception is poor.
I am running into the same situation. It keeps on switching between roaming and normal for no reason. I usually get pretty good reception in my room. It will sit there at about 2-3 bars reception, few minutes later its roaming. The phone hasn't been moved at all.
This happened to me 20 minutes after I got it on Friday but after a reboot it was fine. No problem since then. I assumed it was a network issue.
Same issue here, even with Airave (evo next to SG2 has better signal)
Huh, I'm getting better reception than my Evo 4G. The Epic Touch now works in my condo elevator at basement garage level where the Evo would consistently drop a call.
has anyone did a signal strength comparison instead of bars. they may have different values per bar on different phones.
Returns are warranted?

I wonder if there is a difference in radios or something. My experience tells me that this radio is finicky as heck, and I don't know why.
Is there a way to find out if Samsung used different parts or suppliers to make the Epic Touch?
I remember HTC doing this with their phones, and some would be fine, and some would not (different issue each phone, lol)
Mine was doing the same i switched the phone to only go on sprints network and has been fine. I rarely need true roaming but it would go into roaming even when sprint service was available.
I think Sprint may be doing network upgrades/maintenance. The same phenomenon occurs on my Epic 4G Touch and multiple Nexus S 4G's. I'll see signal jump from -106 dBm to -76 dBm and in some places go into roaming. Nothing to worry about as long as it works. They may be upgrading equipment to support EVDO rev B hopefully.
I get much better 4G reception on the E4GT than the NS4G, FWIW.
My signal isn't as good as my photon was better then my evo 3d. I usually don't roam much. Trust me when I say this, reception could be worse lol ill deal with it!!

I hope the poor signal has to do with upgrading to EvDo RevB on Oct7
Thank God I am not alone. My cell reception too is finicky. In places my old evo (which my girl use now)have weak signal my epic touch would roam in and out. Sometimes it won't leave roaming even after I get to a known good reception area. Only a reboot would kick it back to sprint network. I read somewhere that calling sprint and having them reset my phone on their end might help. I am going to try this out as soon as I get home.

(Q) downgrading pri and NV helps data speed?

I have been modifying my Evo for close to a year now. What a fantastic device. Here recently, I have been plauged w horrible data speeds. Called sprint, complained, they told me my area is below the standard for speeds. Which is odd because away from work my speeds are nice and no real complaints but I work on a Verizon dominated AFB and no real support for sprint. I had been on the new radios, pri and NV for a while and decided while I'm taking a little break to test out something. I flashed back to 1.77 pri and NV and in the exact same spot my ping went from 900s to 130s. My do speed went from 50kbps to over 1mbps.
How is this? Is it possible the old pri and NV make that much of a difference? This is the same data are for the last month I have had horrendous speeds and immediately after flash my speedtest locks in faster. Everything is working better. Anyone else have this experience?
After extensive testing this is the only answer I can come up with...it makes my phones data 10x faster in over a mile of different locations. Held over 1mbps in all areas where previously for over a month have been barely 100kbps. The best was 1.8mbps dl speed. I am super excited.
You can prove your speculation by flashing back and forth between version 1.77 and 2.15 and try speedtest at the same time and location. I tried both and didn't see any noticeable difference in speed test.
Weird. Maybe not for everyone but it has definitely helped my phone.
Even had another stock Evo 3d beside my Evo 4g and I consistently pulled over 500 kbps greater than his E3D.
Does anyone know exactly what pri and NV do?

When WiMax signal drops, my whole data connection goes away for about 10 seconds.

Hello,
I am currently running CM7 nightly sept 30th. Whenever I am in a 4G(WiMax) area i can connect, albeit slower than I would like, but once I move around a little and the signal degrades I have noticed that when the signal quality reaches a certain point the 4G connection drops, and when that happens my 3g connection goes out. All i am left with are my signal bars or my signal level in dbm (depending on which i have it set up for that day).
However, today I was feeling like I wanted to tinker with my phone a bit. SO i flashed back to mikg 3.11. And noticed that my 4G signal never dropped once, where usually it will drop 1-2 times on my drive home. I also noticed when it finally did (after I passed the last exit with 4g in the area) that my 4G immediately was ready for the handoff and my data was working fine, as if nothing had happened.
SO my main question would be: Is that a known issue? Is it a CM7 issue? AOSP issue?
I did upgrade my radio to 2.15.00.12.19 after I flashed MikG 3.11. But I have had that same radio installed along with CM7 and had the same issue, so I dont think its that. But I did the usual profile and PRL updates so maybe that is the reason.
I will be flashing back to CM7 shortly, however I wont be able to update you guys until either tomorrow on my drive to work, or tomorrow on my drive home.
Any input or help is appreciated.
Thanks
Update: using cm7, it dropped once after having full bars. while sitting still haha.
The rest of the drive home it didn't drop. Speeds were slower than mikg, but still never lost data.
Looks like radio update helped. Because when I was out of range of wimax it shifted to 3g flawlessly.

Wimax and 3G are two separate radios and they don't always trade off correctly because they don't run at the same time. Same thing with 1x and 3g. Plus Wimax is spotty and not reliable, hence the switch to LTE.
