I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem, but my phone seems to store some apps' cache in "USB Storage Data." The result: some apps become ridiculously large in size. My Google Plus, Google Maps, 500px, and Between apps have gotten to over 1gb each! The worst part is that this area is not affected by clearing an app's cache, and I have yo delete the app's data to do anything. I would think that this phone would have some kind of automatic data clearing procedure or something? Why are really old Google plus posts, for example, being kept on my phone's memory long after I read them?? Also, this is causing my phone to become noticeably laggier over time. In fact, before my last reset a week ago, some apps had gotten so large, that the phone no longer loaded their sizes. If I go to the app info page, it just says "loading..." next to the various areas, and even after an hour of waiting, nothing appears. Thus, I am unable to clear cache/data! I've had this happen on 4.0.1, 4.0.2, and 4.0.4 and CM9...so every single OS I've had on the phone! Surely, others must be experiencing this problem? Or is everyone here changing roms every week? :S

P.S. I've looked up online, and the only topics I've found complain about Google+ USB Storage Data being too large, however, I'm noticing that many other apps are doing the same, as I mentioned. Is this an inherent flaw in ICS?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
No. Maybe Google +, but not ICS.
I don't have even one app doing that.
Google Maps does it too though! The only difference is that Maps has a button to reset this memory within the app. There's still no way of doing it through settings. I feel like if a developer makes an app work this way and does not include a setting to reset this memory from within the app, it'll continue to climb indefinitely. Speaking of Google+, is there a way to reset that app's excess memory usage that climbs indefinitely? Its ridiculous that Google hasn't resolved this issue when it has been reported so many times.

This is definitely an issue on the Gnex (specially the int'l that is 16GB only). I am looking into getting the int'l Gnex and I'm looking into all these things. Perhaps I can do w/o Google+, but not w/o google Maps.

Of course it does. It caches what it is downloading for faster fetching.

Thank you! Finally some acknowledgment that I'm not the only person with this issue. Indeed, I do have the 16gb GSM version Are there any workarounds aside from flashing a new ROM every few weeks and losing all my data?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I would complain to the app developers you have issue with. Otherwise, clear data on the apps you have issue with. I am using the same data on my phone from over a month ago, and do not have this issue. It is likely I don't use the same apps as you, however.
These are temp files these apps work with. There is no real workaround other than what I posted above.
Thanks for your suggestion. There are, however problems with it. Namely, that it erases all app data, such as anything I've saved, etc. Also, the fact that once the USB Storage Data exceeds a certain number, the app info hangs up on "loading..." and the buttons to clear cache, and clear data are disabled. Even clicking uninstall hangs on "uninstalling..." This seems like a big flaw to me that I wish Google would address...

Same problem, a solution without having to do a factory reset?
Anyone come up with anything here?

Been having a weird issue with my phone lately. I'm rooted, s-off, running stock 2.2, no custom kernel.
Lately what will happen is my phones 3G won't work for loading pages, apps, streaming video as it'll be stuck "uploading". By that I mean the upstream arrow will either stay lit or blink. I've tried to pin point an app that would be doing it with no success. It'll do it for a minute sometimes two then work normally. Seems to happen most often when I wake the phone. Any thoughts?

Hmm, sounds like it might be some app, or service phoning home and hanging. Try using a process manager app to see if you can detect which apps and services are running when your phone is doing that. Try killing all nonessential services, then see if the condition persists. If no, then reactivate one service at a time until it does. If the problem persists after killing all nonessential services, have a look at running processes, and kill any that seem suspicious. Once you know which app, service l, or process is the offending party, try uninstalling the related app.
Hope that's helpful.

I'll give that a try. Thanks.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
So after a few weeks of trying, killing apps or processes does nothing to stop the issue. Its very random when it happens and when it does I can do nothing that uses 3G.
Anyone else have an idea?

Is there an app that will show what's using my network in real time? Not a stats app but actual, current usage.

Could it be PRL and location based? Starting to get real frustrating.

Sorry you're still having trouble
Hi Phaded,
Sorry that my suggestion yielded no positive results for you. If you've killed all non-essential services and processes, and it's still appears to be "uploading," something is definitely not right. I don't think it's PRL, but I personally don't know enough about how the radio works to say for sure.
At this point, you could try a different ROM. If you don't already have it, I recommend ROM Manager root. It's totally worth the $ and is available on Android Market. It makes trying different ROMs really easy.
Trying a new ROM would also effectively reinstall your radio, which might do the trick. Before you flash a new ROM, do a nandroid backup from recovery, and backup your apps with Titanium Backup, which is another must-have, IMO.
If all else fails, RMA? It could be hardware... A genius with this stuff I am not, but I have beaten my head against many a wall..
Good luck!
I installed Virtuous 3.1 last night and so far so good. Going to keep an eye out for the rest if the day so hopefully it is fixed.

24 hours and no issue with it. This was a multiple time a day occurrence so safe to say it resolved itself.

Congrats Phaded!
Welcome to the ranks of the Virtuous! Glad to hear it's resolved.
Now you've got ROM Manager, you can safely try a host of different ROMs and themes. I recommend the Revolutions theme on top of Virtuous - it's very pretty.

Having same "stuck in upload mode" issue
I have a non-rooted, stock G2 (from T-Mobile) running Android 2.2.
Every day, as many as twenty or thirty times per day, the phone gets stuck in "upload" mode. The data icon shows that data is uploading (or trying to) and I am unable to use any data-related services (whether tethered or on the phone itself). When it happens it can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. The only way I can forcibly stop it is to completely shut down the radio by toggling airplane mode off then on, forcing the phone to reacquire a data signal.
I've tried resetting the phone, deleting every app, reinserting the SIM card, and even formatting the SD card. Nothing seems to work to solve the issue.
My two main concerns are that 1) I can't reliably download apps, check mail, send pics/videos, or other data-related processes. 2) I'm concerned that if something IS uploading, it may be uploading a LOT and adding to my 5GB per month throttle-cap on T-Mobile.
I've ended every endable process, and killed or uninstalled every app possible (I can't seem to remove bloatware without rooting, which I'm not yet eager to do as this phone is less than 60 days old, and I'm otherwise happy with it as is).
Any suggestions or recent information as to why this is occurring?
If you have root, then be careful. If you authorize 10 devices (different ROMs) to your Google Account, then you can't add any more. It used to be as simple as deauthorizing devices every time you reach you limit. As of now, you can only deauthorize 4 device PER YEAR. Be careful...I just had to reupload all my music to a different account because of this.
MEGA SUPER ULTRA EDIT: Google appears to have fixed the issue. Both Adrynalyne and I can now deauthorize devices. It still says the 4 device restriction applies, but seems to be fixed. YAY GOOGLE!
Good thing I just deauthorized all but two devices! This blows

when did this start happening? I unauthorized devices all the time on my account.
I called and they said it happened within the last 60 days. They couldn't do anything, but passed it onto Level 2 Tech Support and will email me if they can manually deauthorize my devices.
Got phones?
...of the people, by the people, for the people...
How does Google determine if your device is the same or not? Something in build.prop? If when flashing between ROMs we keep this value the same, your device would always appear to be the same. Problem solved.

Me too! I did just check to make sure it wouldn't let me deauthorize anymore, and Amphibliam is correct. Quite a bummer. Do let us know if you are able to manually deauth any devices or if any other workarounds are found.

I think it has to do with how the app authenticates with your Google account. Each time you click "allow" on the prompt to allow the Music app access to your account counts as an activation.
I'm stealing this info thanks

Def. Need to find a way around this. I'm maxed out on deauthorizations and I'm at 8 devices.

Last time I changed ROMs and restored Google Music with data via MyBackup, it didn't ask me to authorize - it was already authorized. Potential work around?
Possibly. Doesn't help me at this point. My tenth device was reached when I upgraded to build 36. I forgot to flash gapps, so it killed all my google accounts. I tried restoring data from the Music app on my Inc2, but no dice. My guess is once this s**t really hits the fan, people are gonna find a fix. If this happens again with no workaround, my fix is called Amazon MP3.

"Please note that you can only revoke access to four devices per year."
They can't provide an AOSP supported device and then limit Google services to it and not expect an uproar.
Seems to me a simple data wipe would do the same thing.
Honestly, the only reasons why this isn't widespread is because people just haven't flashed enough ROMs yet. This won't just affect the Nexus, but ANY rooted Android device that flashes 15 or more ROMs in a year. Which is like 99% of the rooted population. My guess is that within 1-2 months, this will be all over the internet. I was just unlucky enough to be one of the first. But this really is absurd. What is the reasoning behind limiting the # of devices that can be revoked? Absolutely ridiculous.
And yes, any data wipe would do the same thing, so I imagine if you have a phone with issues (like the Nexus) and you buy the first one, then try 2-3 data wipes/different ROMs to get signal drops/color/whatever fixed. That's 3 devices. Then, they get 2 more Nexuses, and try the same thing on the first, but the second device is fine, so they flash a ROM. That's already 7-9 devices right there. That means you can only flash 5-7 ROMs before you encounter this issue.

Wiping a device has the same effect.
You don't need to flash a rom, because it doesn't change your esn, meid, or even your android_id.
I updated my post.

I am sure that once this issue is out in the open, it will be a rule that you can only deauthorize 4 unique devices each year. As of right now it is not differentiating between multiple instances of the same device.
I have no idea who to ***** at, but I'll support anyone who starts a complaint, petition, or whatever.
It was mentioned earlier but, what I do is restore my "accounts/sync" with titanium backup.
That way you don't have to authorize the device each time.
Be sure to:
After backing up all apps and system data, then after flashing a new ROM on first boot, install titanium backup (pro or not) VIA APK
Then run Titanium Backup and restore the accounts
Then restore the google music app with DATA via Titanium Backup
Then use the market and music like normal without any need for autorizing a new device etc..
My girlfriend's Arc is sending up to 50 mb of data every day and also receiving somewhere near that amount. I've had several data monitoring apps on it and they all give pretty much the same amount, and those that show what's been using the data all say it's the OS itself, so I can't manage the data it sends by any other means than switching data off entirely.
This has been happening for about a month and seems to be getting worse. She was running Gingerbread and I did two fresh installs, but they didn't change anything. I've now put Generic Global ICS on it and it's still the same.
Does anyone have any ideas? Another side effect seems to be that it's killing the battery. Could it even be a hardware problem?

Questions go in the Q&A section.
I have found that under jellybean, some apps can cause excessive uninstall times. I don't believe I'm the only one experiencing this as I've read on other forums that it is because they create numerous files in cache that must be sorted through whenever any app is uninstalled. I have read that Google Current is one, I have found a couple of others: Houston Rodeo, one of the audio spectrum analyzer apps, etc...
My question is threefold. First, can we expect a fix, or is this considered to be not broken. Second, is there any way to identify offending apps prior to installing. Third, is it a programming issue that app developers can work around or avoid.

I've noticed the same thing and don't have an explanation.
Hello,
I recently used a data recovery app on my Galaxy Nexus to recover some deleted photos. The application worked a little too well, recovered about 16,000 jpegs and pngs, saving which I ended up with around 350 MB of disk space left on my phone.
When I noticed my phone getting slow, I deleted everything, did a factory reset, a clean wipe and installed a CM 11 nightly - nothing helps. Though on 3G, apps take forever to get downloaded and installed. I need to sit and wait on the installed apps to open, even making a phone call is a dreadful experience now.
Is there anything that I can do to get my phone back to speed?
Not sure if it'll work for you but this really helped fixed lag issue for me:

If that doesn't work, I read before that when reflashing a ROM to first factory wiping 2-3 times in a row.
Also seems to helps with lag to allows keep >4gb free storage.

Thank you, Isajoo. I tried this tool now, got an error saying that some partitions are not supported. Anyway, I have tried it on the partition it supports, let me play around with my phone for a while and see if it has helped improve anything.
Btw, after deleting everything, I have around 6GB of free space...
I guess its working! Though its still lags while taking/making calls and unlocking the screens, the downloading/installing and many other operations are considerably faster now.
Thanks a ton, mate. I was absolutely clueless before...
