Been having a weird issue with my phone lately. I'm rooted, s-off, running stock 2.2, no custom kernel.
Lately what will happen is my phones 3G won't work for loading pages, apps, streaming video as it'll be stuck "uploading". By that I mean the upstream arrow will either stay lit or blink. I've tried to pin point an app that would be doing it with no success. It'll do it for a minute sometimes two then work normally. Seems to happen most often when I wake the phone. Any thoughts?

Hmm, sounds like it might be some app, or service phoning home and hanging. Try using a process manager app to see if you can detect which apps and services are running when your phone is doing that. Try killing all nonessential services, then see if the condition persists. If no, then reactivate one service at a time until it does. If the problem persists after killing all nonessential services, have a look at running processes, and kill any that seem suspicious. Once you know which app, service l, or process is the offending party, try uninstalling the related app.
Hope that's helpful.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I'll give that a try. Thanks.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
So after a few weeks of trying, killing apps or processes does nothing to stop the issue. Its very random when it happens and when it does I can do nothing that uses 3G.
Anyone else have an idea?

Is there an app that will show what's using my network in real time? Not a stats app but actual, current usage.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Could it be PRL and location based? Starting to get real frustrating.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Sorry you're still having trouble
Hi Phaded,
Sorry that my suggestion yielded no positive results for you. If you've killed all non-essential services and processes, and it's still appears to be "uploading," something is definitely not right. I don't think it's PRL, but I personally don't know enough about how the radio works to say for sure.
At this point, you could try a different ROM. If you don't already have it, I recommend ROM Manager root. It's totally worth the $ and is available on Android Market. It makes trying different ROMs really easy.
Trying a new ROM would also effectively reinstall your radio, which might do the trick. Before you flash a new ROM, do a nandroid backup from recovery, and backup your apps with Titanium Backup, which is another must-have, IMO.
If all else fails, RMA? It could be hardware... A genius with this stuff I am not, but I have beaten my head against many a wall..
Good luck!
I installed Virtuous 3.1 last night and so far so good. Going to keep an eye out for the rest if the day so hopefully it is fixed.

24 hours and no issue with it. This was a multiple time a day occurrence so safe to say it resolved itself.

Congrats Phaded!
Welcome to the ranks of the Virtuous! Glad to hear it's resolved.
Now you've got ROM Manager, you can safely try a host of different ROMs and themes. I recommend the Revolutions theme on top of Virtuous - it's very pretty.

Having same "stuck in upload mode" issue
I have a non-rooted, stock G2 (from T-Mobile) running Android 2.2.
Every day, as many as twenty or thirty times per day, the phone gets stuck in "upload" mode. The data icon shows that data is uploading (or trying to) and I am unable to use any data-related services (whether tethered or on the phone itself). When it happens it can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. The only way I can forcibly stop it is to completely shut down the radio by toggling airplane mode off then on, forcing the phone to reacquire a data signal.
I've tried resetting the phone, deleting every app, reinserting the SIM card, and even formatting the SD card. Nothing seems to work to solve the issue.
My two main concerns are that 1) I can't reliably download apps, check mail, send pics/videos, or other data-related processes. 2) I'm concerned that if something IS uploading, it may be uploading a LOT and adding to my 5GB per month throttle-cap on T-Mobile.
I've ended every endable process, and killed or uninstalled every app possible (I can't seem to remove bloatware without rooting, which I'm not yet eager to do as this phone is less than 60 days old, and I'm otherwise happy with it as is).
Any suggestions or recent information as to why this is occurring?

Literally every time i check for software updates i get
"Communication failed"
The server is currently unavailable.
Your device will automatically check for an update within the next 48 hours.
Then if i check again it says device is up to date, you can check for updates again in XXhours. If i go into application manager -> AT&T Software Update and clear data, i can check for updates again but i get the same communication failed. I also tried clearing data and rebooting phone, and it still wont check.
And i can't get Samsung Kies running on my windows 7 pc for some reason, so i can't get updates from there either.
Is anyone else on AT&T experiencing these problems? Any fix for this? I really want that update that adds brightness control to the notification menu.

I did not update, but hearing that update would disable local search, add new modem. Nothing about Brightness control
There is no brightness control on ATT update. I was having the same problem you were and exchanged the phone. There is no fix as far as I know for the error you are getting. It is a common issue. Search the annoyances (bugs) thread.
I don't know if the OTA update resolves your issue because they day after I exchanged mine the update came out.

I also haven't been able to get the OTA update. I assumed it was because I rooted and the device is listed as 'modified'. Is the update worth it?
It is in my opinion, and my usage habbits, for the WiFi stability increase that is gained.
Universal search is stripped (searches conducted on phone do not include on device results, ie contacts).
In other words, if you use the Google search by long pressing your menu button the results from your search will only be pulled from the internet.
I rarely use the search built in, so it hardly mattered to me.
Check out the developer forum for ways around the universal strip if you are rooted and want to update.

Well i reseated the SIM card, and removed the little blue tape from the sd slot and the SIM slot, rebooted and still not working.
I wanted to avoid rooting, since the stock software runs so smoothly and i liked being on the latest at&t software. I guess since i can't get OTA updates now theres no reason not to root.
Will this issue be fixed eventually? Or would i be better off exchanging phones while i can?
I'd exchange it. If you have faulty hardware then rooting won't do anything for you.
Peace of mind, if anything, that if you decide to root your phone is functioning as it should from the start.
Others will argue it's software issues.
But, whatever the cause, none of us paid to have a 90% functioning phone from the factory. Go get what you paid for is my take on it.
Good luck.

Well speaking as a software engineer, i'm almost certain its a software issue, most likely with at&t's software update app, or on their servers. Mabey reinstalling the at&t software update application will help?
It sounds reasonable to me. Maybe try the method for No trip flash counter in devoplment? You would be upgrading to the newest firmware and have root and not trip the flash counter. You would still be able to check for ota updates (although should just return the status of your software is up to date since it is a totally stock ROM just with root injected). I imagine that would reinstall the software update service. Although with your knowledge you are way over my head. And whether or not when updating ROMs if that application is reinstalled is something I can't answer.
Maybe just try this first:
Settings> Application Manager> All> AT&T Software Update> Clear Data> Confirm
Power off Phone
Remove battery for at least thirty seconds.
Reinstall battery and power on device.
Try again after device boots up.

I've been having this same problem
I was thinking that its because of AT&T's controlled release of the OTA.
Its been so long since the release, that I can't imagine that's still true. I also agree that its probably a software thing. I have a number of the bloat apps disabled and also wonder if one or more of those would interfere with such a thing.
I'd love to hear about a resolution.

So, if it's a software issue why is it two identical devices running the same software from the factory yield different results? I.e. my first device would do exactly as your original post outlines, then my replacement device had no issue checking for updates (same stock software, same device form factor).
If you search there are a lot of examples of complaints of this exact issue.
I am also very interested in this because even though there are many complaints out there, the only answers seem to be;
1) who cares this is xda and we update through Odin/cwm etc...
2) replace it.
Good luck, I hope you guys find an answer.

I haven't tried enabling everything. I've tried enabling 'Samsung Push' which seemed like the likely starting point. I've been trying to do some debug on some battery drain things, so I've been hesitant to change too much at once. Also, I can basically only check every 24 hours so its slow going.
As far as the hardware issue, it just doesn't make too much sense that a hardware issue would be causing a problem because the software update would presumably be using the same hardware as the rest of the working smartphone functions. I think the explanation to one device updating and one not is more likely a server device id filtering or a user changing more than 'just the new hardware'.
Its neither here nor there though. Everyone will have there hair brained theories. Why don't we start asking what features will be on the next iphone. Seriously though, apple has to add a removable battery right? (I'm just kidding, please don't spam a million responses about how that will or will not ever happen.)

You can bypass the wait time between checks by going into application managment -> at&t software update and clearing data. Then you can try to update again.

I've had similar issues checking for updates. i gave up and pulled the first update with the USALG1 rom posted in the development forum sticky. I too have several apps disabled (actually moved out of the system/app dir) and was wondering if that possibly caused issues. I never did try updating through kies though.
My kies wont even run on my windows 7 64 bit. There seems to be alot of people having problems with kies on win7 64 bit, nothing from samsung either. So theres really no way for me to get updates
This is How I Got My Phone to Update
I should add that this was my 2nd galaxy s3 to not update. I did a factory reset hoping it would fix the issue. It didn't. I called att customer care for help b/c I was thinking maybe they just set up my account incorrectly when I first got the phone. Nothing else really makes sense. They said they couldn't help and take it to the store. I took it to an att store, and they said they don't actually do any software troubleshooting, so they just exchanged it for a new one. I tried doing the update there, it failed, so I took it home, and I force closed all the update apps, cleared all their data, and it worked as soon as I hit update. If force closing and clearing the data from the att and samsung update apps doesn't help, There may be nothing else you can do except take it in to an att shop.

When you got it to work, exactly what apps did you force close and clear data? Just AT&T software update? Any others?

I force closed the At&T Software Update app and I think the Samsung Push Service. It is really the AT&T software update app that finally started downloading immediately after trying it again.
So I finally attempted the Keis connection and it worked immediately. I don't know what other problems people are having, but when I installed it on my Win7 x64 machine I had the S3 connected. After I ran the software for the first time it mentioned an update and proceeded to update it. Keep fighting the good fight jefferson9.
My issues range from the app randomly shutting down, to it taking multiple attempts to login, having to usually put your password in, to contacts not showing up.
Is anyone else having problems like this? What can I do. It's happened on stock and two other debloated ROMs. What can I do?

I just tried Skype for the first time, and video calling didn't work. I haven't used it enough to get any of those other issues.

Skype not quite working here either
I'm also having touble with it. Multiple logins, crashes, sometimes need to put the password in, at times can't even use the skype testing service; or it will be online and my contacts seem to be online but I can't IM them, anything I write gets stuck being sent with the message "pending". Rebooting sometimes works for a bit before it starts happening again.
I wonder what ROMs you are all using, and if perhaps some other background app/ service is conflicting. I've had pretty smoothe experience while using rooted/debloted ROMs.

Since "upgrading" to GS3 from GS2, Skype, one of the apps I use most often, has gone from good to awful.
Multiple logins, can't call, online when offline, offline when online, you name it.
For a commercial app it has to be one of the most buggy i've ever tried and honestly seems to be getting worse. i'm on the most up to date one with latest official samsung OS.
Yes , i am also have same problem with Skype. I tried different roms and only FeeGS3 with trinity alfa50 working without any problem.
What's happening, guys? I had a question. I disconnected my phone a while back & have no plans to get back on Sprint anytime soon (broke college student!)
Anyway, I use my phone as a media player & for the useful apps. My phone has been freezing way too much lately, to the point where I've had to download task killers to prevent apps from launching. I never had this problem before. I blame it on the few times my phone has been dropped. I've tried the Supercharge script, but the freezing continues. I've also tried fresh installs with no luck. I'm currently on the People's ROM 2.21. I have a feeling that it's due to the fact that I'm on BML instead of my usual MTD, but I'm not sure.
So I was wondering, what "phone apps/processes" can I delete, since my phone is no longer in service?
Just because it's slow and you want to remove cellular services?
From what I understand it's you're having too much apps that runs at background automatically... Try using Autostarts to cut some of them.

"my phone has been freezing way too much lately, to the point where I've had to download task killers to prevent apps from launching."
After starting a couple of apps, which I know are background processes, I get on the Autokiller Memory Optimizer app (which by the way, is perfect for seeing all apps that are running, including system) & close them. It sucks to be doing it every 15 mins, though. If I forget, then the phone freezes.
I guess what I am asking for is what apps can I remove, since I don't use the actual phone anymore? (dialer, voice mail, etc.)

Yeah I already got it, it's that your phone lags and freezes so you wanna remove some apps INCLUDING cellular services. Yet I insist your trying Autostarts and airplane mode, this combination, if properly set (in Autostarts you can decide whether an app starts during startup, when you turn on WiFi, when you plug in, etc.), can save you a lot of CPU power and memory while keeping the potentials of the apps (not removing them because somehow you may need them)
As for really removing the apps... There are lists floating around telling which APKs can be safely deleted but they're for CM and are based on the "safety" of not losing phone service... So it's really up to you to take the risk. Nandroid backup before you experiment and everything should be fine

Try this.
Search, read. Then search some more.
There are SO many posts about GPS issues it's silly. I personally have made dozens.
Right now I'm on Stock Rooted GB08, with GB27 modem and GB08 Agat/Garwynn repacked Kernel. And my GPS does work and most importantly will "stop searching for GPS data...." when I close my applicatins now.
And my GPS apps do work outside too.
You may find what you are looking for but probably won't be handed the answer you're looking for.
This phone has been well known to have horrible radios and gps.
On any aosp rom I have to first use a touchwiz based ics one click and get a gps lock. I then power off the phone with gps running and odin el26 then flash the aosp rom. I always make sure to get a gps lock again before the first reboot of the aosp rom. It sounds dumb and time consuming but it works.
I actually got a lock in GPS status. Had to be outside. All is good now. Cleared the data and then re downloaded...got a lock in 2 seconds

I wonder how true this is. I've never resolved my GPS locking issues either, but never knew anyone with an unrooted phone to compare against. I've had the same behavior with my previous phone(Sprint HTC Hero). It's been going on long enough where I stopped looking for reliable solutions.
Typically, GPS will work great for me after a reboot, even indoors at times. After a day or two, it will fail to lock when needed. I can use an app like GPS Status to reset the agps data, but I have to do it every time I need GPS service if it's been over a few hours since the last time I reset the data with the app. When I get sick of having to use the app to reset data and get a lock before using the app I want, I will do another reboot in hopes to get a longer period before having to use the app again. Many of the fixes I've attempted seem to work at first, but the problem comes back. It's hard to tell if the given fix did anything or if the reboot during the install of the fix is what helped for a short time. I wish apps had the option to automatically reset agps data when being launched, but I'm guessing there's good reason for not doing that. I admit I don't really know what's going on in the background to validate that consideration.
If you are never getting any gps locks at all, and you've tried using the recommended apps to reset your agps data, then you may have other issues. I was running into this after installing a ROM and forgetting to install the required modem. However, that was a much more obvious issue. If you're having GPS issues, I think it's worth noting whether or not you've had any successful locks with your current rom, or if things have become unreliable in situations that used to work. I'm just curious if others share the same experience as me. For those that are used to using an app like GPS Status, how often do you need to reset the data before using a gps app?
Head over to Exit_Only's thread and check out some of his awesome tweaks. But this should help. I know it worked wonders for me. It's from his post. Please thank him, he's been great with updates as well. Check under "Add ons".

Try it a couple times with a few reboots. If that doesnt work. Try flashing wild for the night 2/15. And try again. If thats a no go then try flashing back to stock.
If at first you dont succeed. Try, try again.
If you still dont succeed, then its prolly time for a new phone
Q: I am running AOSP/AOKP/CM based rom and my data is slow. Also my 3g/4g is not working. Oh yeah and I never get a GPS lock. I don't want to go back to stock touchwiz! Please HELP!!!
A: Well you can't update profile and prl using AOSP/AOKP/CM based rom and it has to be done from touchwiz based roms. But there is some good news. You can temp boot to stock EL29 rom and do whatever you want to such as use dialcodes, update profile/prl etc. Temp boot means that you will be able to boot 1 time to EL29 and then next time you boot, you will be back on whatever rom you were on. Follow this simple video to do this.

Damn.... noticed earlier today it was doing that and looked for anything that could have turned it on. Never thought about the phone app. I ended up restarting my phone. Just dialed a number as a test and sure enough... the gps icon popped up. At least this time it quit on its own...
But why would the gps turn on when I make a phone call?
I seem to remember an updated privacy notification coming in the mail from AT&T a week or so ago. In it i believe there was mention of sharing "anonymous call location data." I think maybe I'll dig up that piece of mail and follow the instructions to "opt out."
Think I'm gonna test this by making a call from one of my kid's lines.

Good to know i'm not the only one. Its a shame because it wasn't doing it last week and now since I work in a metal building with already poor reception, its just shredding my battery life.
I feel sure that I have all apps that request location turned off. This is unrelated to my dialer app, as I only make one or two phone calls in a day.
Root and factory data reset seems to have resolved this for now. Still trying to figure out a cause.

I also got on a chat with at&t tech support. He states they didnt have any other reports of this issue and nothing released recently should do this. He also mentioned that E911 uses the gps for location when you call 911. (I knew this.)
In any event, I asked him to open a case with engineering because I don't want it to kill my battery if I make or take a call while in a bldg.
Anyone seeing this should contact customer support to file a "complaint" so it is logged and gets attention.
Anyone seen this on another phone that may be in use in their house?

Thanks for the tip.
This just hit me mid week too, I'm trying the above solution.
One piece exists!
Carrieriq people! I don't know much about these phones, but have been learning slowly. I have the same issue, however I discovered carrieriq wake lock last week, and it makes me want to change to Verizon. Now I'm not sure, but I have that wake lock while the GPS is tweaking out. So I'm guessing that's what it is. I had to register just to post this, and I wish there was a way to get rid of it. I live in a Grey area, and prefer not to have all my calls and texts stored in a server for 60 days or whatever they claim to store the Information.
Same issue started 2 days back. Hope to find any resolution

Damn carrierIQ... you are absolutely right. Installed one of those checker apps and its on there. (One of the downsides to not having a custom ROM.) But to have it really fire up like this, they must have flipped the switch on gathering "anonymous call location data" as was mentioned in a recent update to the privacy policy.
Installed Logging TestApp from an xda member ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17612559&postcount=110) and then the $1 key from the app store. Went thru the removal process and it no longer kicks on when I make a call.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only person experiencing this. Makes me feel better about the situation. Carrieriq has apparently been around for quote some time, however I hadn't heard of it because I was on am extended vacation. When I found out about it last week or whenever it was I did a lot of research on it. But a couple days ago when my GPS kept turning on out of nowhere while I had it off I got paranoid, and was scared they had me under investigation or something. If anyone else tries reggae Smith suggestion and is able to get rid of carrieriq. On this phone please post and let us know. I'm sure most of us out there don't want AT&T saving our texts and call history. Your browser history, and all that. Its a key logger that saves EVERYTHING that you do on your phone. At least that's my grasp on it. I'm wondering if getting rid of it the way reggie did even really delete it though. Is it possible to even get rid of it without flashing a custom room? Just because we may be able to get some peace of mind by not seeing the wake lock, is it really gone? I have only had Android for about 3 months, and managed to work from a atrix 2, to having 2 s3, one with severe wake lock issues. Drain my whole zero lemon battery overnight, to this ogp, which I dig. So this phone works great and one day carrier iq for 13 hours one day, so my friend Google gave me some insight, and bam, here we are. I have so many questions, but the capcha or whatever from my phone is irritating, so I will refrain from asking so many questions in different threads, that people will think I'm spamming. In the words of the great William currington "God is great, beer is good, and *****es are crazy!"
Anybody found any solution for this? There were some Google app updates hangout search may be forcing

Me 2
Well i feel better now. I'm not the only one ... i just started noticing this 2 or 3 days ago and its killing my battery. system services are using 30 to 40% of my battery in a day and it barely lasts whereas before it was excellent.
No way to turn this off yet?

I can confirm that this 1 dollar app has fixed the problem on my phone as well. E980.
Before trying that i tried to manually remove it, i was able to find two library files @ "/system/lib/" 1 - libiq_client.so && 2 - libiq_service.so
However I was unable to find the associated binary. I found a service lost the name. I installed cwm recovery, and then attempted to remove the library's at the risk of bricking, to invoke a app crash log and figure out where this :crying: binary was located. I added .bak to the end of the library names, and rebooted. I was greeted with a nice message "The android system has stopped working.", when I got to the homescreen, and then again when I attempted to make a call. But the phone worked fine and gps did not kick attempt to search. So I went and integrated the kernel logs and it showed android.iqd as the module that crashed, and an associated service. I couldn't find a full path to the binary and I don't know much about the android kernel yet, I'm only on my 2nd day being rooted on my 1st android device. If anyone could help me investigate this and figure out where the binary is located, and upload it I would be a very happy camper.
TLDR - After using Logging Test app and running remove IQ, i can rename or remove the library files with no issues! But I would still like to know more about the files/services associated.
Double post. Today my phone CIQ re-enabled itself, and started throwing the app crash message again "Android System Has Stopped Working.", because I have my CIQ library files re-named. Also note that it seems that I cannot RECEIVE text messages with these CIQ library files re-named. So DO NOT rename them.
Here is a link to the system_app_crash generated by renaming the library files.

I a very in-experienced android user, I need help finding where "com.carrieriq.iqagent.client.IQClient" is located, and where it is located in the phones startup. In linux there is RCXX.d files that contain startup and shut down procedures.
I live in the grey area so this GPS **** is driving me nuts. - THANKSh
