I wanted to share my experiences in making the most of the FF11 build. It's a setup that is shaping up to give me 48 hours of battery life, and one that I'm really happy with from a performance perspective. I did not develop anything referenced below, all credit goes to the devs.
I put my configuration as my signature, but I'll go through more detail here in what I did. This step by step guide assumes that you know how to get zips onto your phone and flash them with a custom recovery, and also assumes that you know how to use Odin. With the flashing going on, standard disclaimer applies. I am not responsible should you brick your device. But, take your time, read the threads, and follow the directions in them and that should make that a non point.
Step 1 - Base ROM Install
Back your stuff up if you want to keep it, and then use sfhubs one-click Odin stock rooted FF11: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705730
Follow his directions to install and you're stock rooted FF11. I highly recommend doing the factory reset/full wipe version instead of the modified no data wipe version.
Step 2 - Kernel with Custom Recovery and init.d Support
Next, we need a custom recovery to continue the flashing. We also need init.d support for later. With those requirements, I am recommending Agat's odin version of the FF11 kernel repacked with AGAT recovery. Follow his instructions here and install via odin: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1702388
Step 3 - De-bloat
Now with a custom recovery, we can download and install Calkulin's universal bare ROM converter, found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535776
Note the list of what it removes, in case you want any of those apps.
Step 4 - Install your Apps
Get your apps installed from market or from Titanium backup or whatever else. I found it better to do this ahead of time, because step 6 will be more effective.
Step 5 - The S3 Launcher (optional)
This launcher's 1.5.1 version is incredibly smooth, stable, and works very well in this ROM configuration in my experience. I drastically prefer it over the stock touchwiz launcher within FF11. You don't "need" it, but if you want it, download either the 4x5 or 5x5 1.5.1 versions and install per instructions (the beta versions have been reported slow/buggy, so stick with 1.5.1 IMO). Found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26392738
Step 6 - Kobridge Tweaks
Download and install Kobridge Stock FF11 tweak set from his thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668853&page=76 - You're looking for FF11KOB_TWv3.4.zip which is attached to his post. That zip contains several zips within, so open it up and extract them and flash whatever version you choose. I recommend aggressive (Named FF11KOB_TWv3.4A.zip) because it maximizes the battery savings and still performs very well. When you reboot your phone, you should see your phone go through an "Android is upgrading" process - This is the kobridge tweaks doing a zipalign/optimize on all your apps - so that is why we installed them early in step 4!
Step 7 - Battery Saving OS tweaks
Turn off screen vibration (Settings -> sound -> vibrate on screen tap [uncheck] )
Turn off notification LED which can keep phone from deep sleeping (Settings -> display -> pulse notification light [uncheck] )
Make sure auto brightness is enabled
Make sure wifi is set to never go to sleep (Settings -> wifi -> advanced -> Keep Wifi on during sleep [always]
Step 8 - Enjoy a fast, light, stable, and efficient ROM configuration
Nothing earth shattering in this guide. Many people use many of these tweaks already, but this combination is something I find pretty close to perfect balance between performance and battery. Hope you enjoy it too!

I used Agat's recovery to flash the bare rom converter, the S3 launcher, and the kobridge tweaks. it worked great for me.
I dont know that I'd say I'd flash full roms with it, but for update/mod type zips I was fine with it and wouldn't worry.

I am getting ready to install a custom kernel on my dinc, and just wanted to get a confirmation that I'm going to be doing it right. So if you agree with this procedure, let me know!!! And be sure to include a kernel suggestion(priority is battery life)
1. Find Kernel and download the .zip file
2. Plug the phone in, mount to disc drive, and drag the .zip file over to the root of your SD card
3. Unplug phone, boot into clockwork recovery
4. chose option: Install zip from SD
5. chose option: choose zip from SD
6. Choose your custom kernel
7. click yes to install
8. Reboot phone

Yes, that is more or less correct. It's not always mentioned, but you should also wipe Dalvik when flashing kernels.
As far as a suggestion, what kind of ROM are you running? Keep in mind that Sense ROMs and AOSP kernels may not play nice together, and vice-versa.
For Sense, I personally like Lou's #8, great battery life and smooth as hell performance.
AOSP, I like Savage Zen, what little I've used it.. but it's fairly new and I've been on Sense ROMs recently.

I'm running the stock rom that came with my incredible. Rooted using unrevoked, don't know if that takes me back to 2.1 or not. And how do I wipe Dalvik?
Recommend SwiFTP on device and an ftp client on PC, then no need for USB or mounting drive, etc - it becomes drag & drop.

Nandroid is a full system backup. In Clockwork, go to "Backup and Restore" and click Backup. This creates a folder in /SDCard/Clockworkmod/backup/date-and-time.
To wipe Dalvik, in Clockwork go to "Advanced" and click "Wipe Dalvik Cache." Be warned, the next time you boot after this wipe it is possible for it to take literally several minutes, that is fine and normal, just let it go.
To find your Android version, go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information. You are probably on 2.2 if the phone is new.

Just do the backup in Clockwork. People refer to it as a "Nandroid" because that is what the option was actually called in the older versions of Clockwork. Nowadays it's just called "Backup," but the old name is still used in conversation.

Thanks for the info. Now something was said about how I need to be careful about the kernels I install, care to link a stock speed undervolted hydra kernel that will work with what I got going on?
Personally I would go with ziggy's or HeyItsLou's kernels
ziggy - www.ziggy471.com
HeyItsLou - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859337
Hydra kernels haven't been updated in quite some time, and to be honest i'm not even sure where to get them anymore.
But, thats your decision to make, the best kernel is the one that works best with your phone and for you.

I don't believe they are undervolted, but here is HeyItsLou's thread. His kernels (as stated earlier, specifically #8 in my case) are what I have had the best of luck with when it comes to Sense ROM performance:

Performing the backup now, and got Lou's #8 ready to be loaded. I'll post back and let everyone know how it runs. Thanks for the help guys
Install went well. I noticed right off the bat I lost the little weather animation that shows up on my home screen. I figure if the kernel plans to save me some battery life, those little animations have to go I'm assuming

Nope, it actually came back up all of a sudden after a few minutes, not sure what caused the delay, but the kernel seems to be working smoothly with my phone. I wouldn't be surprised though if I tried out a bunch to see which one I like best, ya know?
having problems with kernels
I have loaded kernerls in the past... but now im running cm6 stable and i tried a few of chads kernels.. snd my phone boots to the lock screen but i have no touch input? can someone provode a link to some kernerls that should work with cm6.. and btw will the same kernels work with cm7?
thank you
Can't confirm the Nandroid backup enough... always do one before you do anything.
I'm using savage Zen for the 1st time today and it seems fairly stable... rom is minuit 1.2.11... battery life is 52% with 11 hours use... I like this the best so far...

I've been having some difficulty (yes I've played with a bunch of roms and kernals) but was told in the magnolia discussion that stock was the best and optimized for yge rom. So how do I go about doing it? Thanks!

Re: Calkulin's E4GT v1.5a [Rev 5 l Fast l Tweaked l Battery Saver Script]
Tried to reply to the thread in Dev section but said I didn't have permission. But I wanted to get this out there:
This is the best ROM I've tried on the GSIIE4GT yet. Battery life is phenomenal.
I'm 1,200 miles from home visiting my very sick mother in the hospital. After a fresh charge, I was able to keep my family updated about her status via email and text. The battery lasted 13+ hours with a display time of over 5 hours. Call time was around 90 minutes too. Today is more of the same. Display has been on nearly 2hours straight and I have 76% battery left.
Thanks for an awesome ROM!

As far as battery life, you are 100% correct when compared to all other custom ROMS I've tried.
However, 3 things bugging me about the current Calkulin ROM:
1. Can't run Polaris Office
2. Can't install any ICS theme
3. Every time you upgrade a Calkulin ROM you lose all your installed apps and data.
I tried only wiping cache, davlik before a Calkulin update and phone wouldn't even boot
which forced me to do an ODIN reinstall before I could even regain CWM 5
which allowed me to do a complete restore from backup.
For anyone who wants a very good custom ROM without those 3 exceptions,
I suggest Phantomhacker's Starburst 1.9.8r
Glenn
1. True
2. Actually there is a great ICS theme made by Overstew (search for it at theme section) and its pretty cool.
3. It is possible to upgrade Calk's ROMS just wiping cache and dalvik, but changing from another ROM you have to format all. (At least I havent encountered a problem doing it this way, been using it from version 1, would recommend not restoring anything from titanium the first time you change to Calk's Rom).
Calk's ROM is very fast and stable, Starburst its also very fast and stable... We are lucky to have great devs working on our phones.

Sometimes true. It's different for everyone. Some people have to do a full wipe (like me) and others don't. TB makes re-setup rather painless anyways. My phone was back to its previous state in about 15 mins after wiping and flashing 1.5 over 1.1.

Thanks guys. Appears Overstew posted an update that does work with Calkulin's 1.5a which i just installed after wiping cache & davlik 3x each. As far as what happened when I tried to upgrade from Calkulin 1.0 to 1.5 I tried to do it with the same wipes plus format SD and could not reboot past initial boot screen, which is when I had to ODIN a ROM & CWM5 to fix things.

1. Yes, Polaris Office does work, I just installed it to check. Here is the apk if you need it -->> http://db.tt/113UwR7Z
Update: I take that back, I know what you mean. You try to open a document, and the screen just flashes black, and goes back to the file explorer.
2. As someone else mentions, the theme has been updated to work with the latest version of Calkulin's.
3. You should use titanium backup to backup all your apps + data. And use Go SMS Pro to backup all ur text messages. I been doing this since I had the OG Evo, and I have not lost my apps and/or data even once.
Some folks say you don't have to wipe anything to jump from 1.1 to 1.5a. Some say wipe cache. Does it just depend on the luck of the user, or was there an OP somewhere for the migration from 1.1 to 1.5a.
I decided yesterday that I'm going to give this rom a shot as my first flash on an Android. I've seen that the "bare" is the same as the full version, minus some bloatware apps. However, I can't find anywhere what apps are missing from the "bare" version. Can anybody tell me what kinds of apps are removed? I don't need a full list, just an idea of what is missing.

Calkulin's 2.5.1 Battery saver script script with Tegrak
Having some problems with Tegrak such as not finding any overclock modules while using Calk's battery saver script and a few other minor bugs. My question is it pointless even bothering with Tegrak while I'm using the battery script? Oh, also I'm running Desperado kernel.
Hey just a quick question, can i use mobile Odin to Odin back to sfhub's el29 and are there any side effects,i can't get to my computer right now to use the one clicks and this fe16 build is eating my battery like a fat man at an all you can eat!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
What you can do is Odin the el26 with cwm kernal and boot into recovery before it tries to load the rom. From there just wipe everything including cache and dalvik cache and flash your rom and you're good to go.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
You can. You'd have to extract the exe from the 7zip file and place that on to your SD card. Sfhub has directions on how to do it in his post. I have done this more than a few times.
However there have been some recent posts about even Mobile Odin bricking phones. I don't know your current ROM, Kernel or setup. But me not being able to go with out a phone for a few days is going to keep me using PC Odin for reverting back to a GB ROM/Kernel.
Also I'm not sure what why your battery consumption is so high on FE16 either. Mine and many others here have had good battery life even with heavy use. You may consider re-flashing the 'Reset Data' option to clear up your system and then maybe try another ROM with battery tweaks in mind.

yeah basically each rom has it's own specific kernel that has to be used when you are on that rom. SO if you want to go back to an other kernel make sure that the rom doesn't load after flashing that kernel it will die. Right now there are really not to many options to change to when on a specific rom like ICS.
Flash kernel phone will reboot, as soon as it turns off do three button combo and go into recovery. Flash calkilins format all and then flash the rom again and see what you get the next time.

SO I DECIDED TO TAKE OFF THE FIXES FULLY RESTORE MY PHONE BACK TO GB ROOTED AGAIN FLASH THE JELLYVERSE AGAIN NOW BOTH PHONES HAVE THE SAME CONFIGURATION..AND STILL MY GPS SUCKS
I C A LOT OF PEOPLE BLAMING THE MODEMS /ROMS/SOFTWARE BUT MY QUESTION IS... IS IT REALLY A SOFTWARE OR A HARDWARE ISSUE?? CUZ I HAVE 2 PHONES WITH THE SAME CONFIGURATION ROM KERNEL MODEM EVERYTHING ON BOTH CAME FROM THE SAME DOWNLOAD AND STILL ONE WORKS BETTER THAN THE OTHER

3. Flash GB BLAZER ROM

6. While LOCK on GPS, reboot into recovery (It should be Clockwork Mod recovery 5.0.2.7)(if not go back into the phone and flash the recovery from ROM manager app, if it was already installed [I can't remember])
7. Perform a backup.
++++
Now it's time to install your ROM.

8. Wipe the 3 things above on #2(1 time only).
9. Flash your ROM of choice + Modem of choice +Gapps (last) if necessary.
10. Reboot phone and immediately check GPS.
Hopefully his was helpful.
I will tell you it's a hardware issue the way the GPS runs thru the Processors cache, or something like that. When we wipe it clears the GPS and it's hard to get a LOCK.
I read that.

I haven't been on this site in quite some time ... since owning an Epic some years ago. I've been happy with my Epic Touch ... until the latest OTA FL24 update.
Needless to say, the phone is unreliable now, especially when using GPS. 4g just switches on and off while using Navigate.
I'm looking for a stable jelly bean ROM or near factory jelly bean leak. (emphasis on stable)
Any recommendations?
Note: I don't have it rooted, but will if I must.
This Rom is pure AOSP and gives the best stock JB experience
Evervolv

If there's anything your confused or need help on...ask me
*And after that you will have a custom recovery with the ROM you installed, that recovery is safe to Flash/Wipe from. All CM kernels are safe to do so
So you don't have to flash the kernel every time
After that just restore your user apps though Titanium backup (If you did anyway)

Wow! Thanks for the detailed response. I certainly needed it since I haven't flashed a ROM in years.
I'll give it a whirl this weekend. (fingers crossed)

Gamepro, I and everyone else here in the E4GT section know that you are trying to help and we greatly appreciate it, but you need to stop pushing that one ROM onto people. When a user asks for a good factory ROM we don't push AOSP/AOKP and say that it is stock. It is not stock for this device. It is stock for the Nexus line and ported to other devices. A factory JB ROM is something like GB08 as it is leaked directly from Samsung/Sprint specifically for this device and will eventually turn into an OTA release. Also, you are promoting favoritism to a Specific ROM. Lately, 75% of your posts have been pushing that specific ROM to people with instructions to install without letting the user decide what is best for them. This tactic is looked down on here and I am surprised no one has said anything to you. I have even seen you tell people to use it when they specifically asked for a TW based JB ROM or for a TW based ICS ROM. We get that it is your favorite ROM. Not saying it is bad or anything. But you really should let the user decide. It is ok to post a link to the ROM page, but that is about all you should post. Evervolv may not be the best ROM for some users. So with all that said, please try not pushing a single ROM on to people. Do some research and check out other ROM's to possibly offer up something that will be good for what people are asking specifically for.
To the OP, we have a huge amount of ROMs here. Try them and see what suits you.

I agree with graydiggy. The ROM favoritism needs to stop. We have many talented delelopers working on both Touchwiz based ROMs and AOSP based ROMs.

ROM roulette sounds like the best option here. Flash all the ROMs and see where you land
I like to break stuff!
