I've tried a reboot and removing the battery. All the applications on the SD card have loaded. Under "battery usage" it has media scanner running, but the force close button is greyed out. It's draining the battery pretty bad - 25% in under an hour.
Anyway to stop it or is this a hardware issue that needs a replacement?
I could try a restore but I don't think this is ROM related. Running Caulkins E4GT 3.0.

Try pulling the sdcard, reboot your phone, let it complete media scan. Shutdown the phone insert you're sdcard, startup your phone and see what happens.
If that doesn't work but into recovery and under advanced try fixing permissions.
Good luck!
I had the same problem in the past. It never stopped running and burned through the battery. The fix was to find the app in settings and clear the data. I believe it was the media storage app.

So it boots up and the media scanner stops without the SD card. I guess the next step is to get a new SD card?

I'd try bashing up the data on it, formatting it and then try inserting it again to see how it does. If it still gives you issues then yeah if say it's probably time for a new card. :-(
Yeah, I did that last month, back-up, wipe, reformat and it worked ok until just recently. I did put in an extra 4 gb SD I had laying around - scanner stopped after a reboot - so yes it is the card.
I was using a 16 GB class 2 - which I feel is a bit slow with the 8MB camera on the touch. Real slow to (like 5 seconds) before I can take another photo.
Any suggestions for brands and class for the Touch? Kingston and San Disk are the biggest names - would a class 4 be ok? or 6? 10 would be overkill for sure.
Thanks.

I can see this as a reply See bold word.
"So I tried using a 50lb sledge, now the card doesn't work at all! Time for a new card!"

Turned off the phone last night, returned to it this morning (6+ hours) with "Power off - shutting down" on the screen. I ended up pulling the battery and booting from cold.
The phone turned back on with no problems, but 45 minutes after turning it off again - it is displaying the same screen and not shutting down. Pulling the battery, turning on and then turning off the phone immediately has the same problem.
Tasks running before the shut down are normal, I have almost no 3rd party apps installed yet.
Ideas anyone?
Sounds like a similar problem that I and a number of others seem to be having. The bad news is that there doesn't seem to be a simple fix at the moment, but the good news is that with it happening to increasing numbers of us, hopefully it will be remediable in a future update.

Hi there,
What main post are you referring to for this issue?
If you could please direct me, thanks.
I'm having the same problem, last week I was turning the phone off and it would turn off in half hour or so.
This morning, I turned the phone off, and it has been "Shutting down" for about 3 hours now...
extremely frustrating!!!
Try to install "aLogCat" application. This app could show Android log files.
And see if you can spot something there ...
I also have this issue. I took out the battery.
The thing is ... after turned on ... you can turn off without any problem.
unmount sd card before shutting down.
Will change it from never to shutting down to shutting down in <10 seconds

Had the same issue when I first got my desire from T-Mobile. SD Card later failed on me, and after getting a replacement from T-Mobile, the phone works perfectly and shuts down instantly. So my guess is that your problem is the SD card. You could try walking to the retailer and try to get a replacement SD card. When mine failed T-Mobile even gave me a 8gb one instead of the orignal 4gb
Im 99% sure its an app/widget causing the prob. I had the same, but its gone when I uninstalled most of my apps. Not sure which app caused the prob though...
I had that problem. After a hard reset it is not present any more. So i guess that some app caused it. Couldnt tell wich one.

It might be harder to diagnose than uninstalling/killing something and trying again, as it might be due to memory leaks, services, other tasks. I've read that it might be related to the backup to sd card which happens from time to time, so unless you're in the middle of a backup then you'd not have a problem (assuming there is a connection). You can only tell over time.
HTC Desire won't power off
I had the exact same problem. I only had 2 widgets active: 1 was the Handcent SMS widget the other was a Battery widget from mippin.com. I changed the Handcent widget to the program shortcut but did not uninstall and uninstalled the Battery widget. Now it powers off with no problem
i have the same issue with my desire.. i have a 8gb sd card in there.. which is nearly full.. maybe thats an issue?

thanks for that.. is there any downside to doing a hard reset? is that setting - privacy - factory data reset?

Once I tried to unmount sd card and then it wasn't possible at all to shut down the phone. I had to remove battery
hey buddy, try to remove quick links like back light and soft reset, it works also try with flash light same...worked with me..good luck. or try toms power off zip.
DESIRE doesnt turn off
It sucks..all night long, this morning i found out it was still in the process of shutting down..turning off the cell phone should be a priority program, all others tasks must shut down..i think HTC should make an update since a lot of users experience same problem.
It used to hang at shutting down with me too. But, and I have no idea what changed, it now shuts down just fine. Weird stuff!
I shut mine down last night. It used to take about 60seconds to shut down but last night it just said "shutting down" for hours. I left it to see what happened. 11hours later it still said "shutting down". I picked it up and was going to open it up and remove battery. I obviously didn't want to do that to get dust and crap into the back of phone. As soon as I turned it over to remove back the screen went white! HTC. And it started up. ? ? ? coincidence or did me moving it around cause the restart after 11hours?
Anyway, I can tell it now has 237mb free (using advanced task killer to check memory available). It never normally has more than 150mb free. Maybe there is a memory leak somewhere in Sense UI? It seems the longer you have used thephone without a restart, the more likley it will hang during shutdown.
I hope HTC are aware of this issue. I logged a support call too, as I'm sure many of you did.
anyway, shake the phone around a bit before you remove the back to see if that helps. It did for me after 11 hours of being stuck on "shutting down!" screen.
Oh by the way, I had unmounted the card befre the shut down in the hopes it would be quicker than 60seconds. It made no difference!
i had this issue also.. a factory reset fixed it.. i think it was an app i installed did the damage.. some mentioned unmounting the sd card first but i tried that and it made no difference..
I was trying to take photo's with my desire, but I was recieving a message saying that the photo's couldn't be saved to the sd card. I was a bit puzzled as I knew I had more than 3gb of the card left. Anyway I decided to go into the storage settings of the phone and sure enough according to my phone the total space on the sd card was 0 and the available space was 0. and it also showed that the internal storage was 64.02 mb.
Anyway, I decided to take the battery out and remove the sd card, and then I reinstalled them. When my phone had restarted I checked the storage settings again and my phone is now showing that the sd card has a total of 3.69gb with 3.43gb available, and also, my internal storage is now showing that I have 78.44mb internal storage available.
Can someone shed some light on what may have happaned.?
This happens on Android sometimes. Just removing and reinserting the card will fix it 99% of the time.

If that's the case, then perhaps next time it happens you could try unmounting and mounting it (ie in software!). Would safe the hassle/risk of taking the phone apart each time.

Just out of curiosity, how to you mount the card after unmounting it? I looked everywhere but had to take the card out and insert it again....
I get something similar, but it's not free space related. Sometimes after unplugging my phone from my PC while being in Mass Storage mode, the card is mounted in read-only mode. It's an odd behaviour that only gets fixed if i replug it into my PC and remove it again.

Uh..yeah, just noticed there's no mount option. Odd, being a Linux device. You're going to have to unmount then reboot.
Perhaps this'll become possible when Android supports installing to SD card.
I've been experiencing the same thing this weekend, but I've not used my phone as a storage device, only battery charging. A reboot fixes the problem but not ideal! Is this a HTC phone issue or Google Android problem? It needs to be addressed!
I am also concerned about internal storage space as it seems to either decrease or increase for some reason. For example, yesterday I had 78mb free internal storage space, earlier on it had dropped to 67.04mb,, than an hour later it went down to 66.25mb I have since switched my phone off and on and now the internal storage is at 80.1mb. I am assuming that the internal storage issue is maybe to do with caches. Would this be correct.?

I don't know, but memory is supposed to be used. Android should be keeping stuff in memory so that it can be used quickly when needed rather than loaded/initialised from scratch each time. Depends on the OS really. I'd suggest not killing tasks and rebooting just to maintain a lot of free memory for the sake of it. If there's a problem then it needs to be fixed but I've not heard of anyone running out of memory and having trouble loading stuff after 24 hours after a reboot.

Same problem for me ... until I found the "SDMount widget". No need to reboot anymore.
Happened to me twice with my 32GB card, now don't take this the wrong way, but I'm glad to see others have experienced this with lower capacity cards!
Thanks for the headsup about the Mount widget, should be very handy.
sdmount ........ thank you for the heads up

did u try a format? removing the card and putting it back in.. restart.. if it occurs again.. you may have to do a factory reset..
Yes i formatted the card my previous 8 gb card was working fine

ive been having some problems with my note using memory cards properly as well. mainly with the camera app.
occasionally i would take 20 odd photos and film 30 minutes of HD footage, but the moment i tap to go on gallery, nothing has been added. when i go to check storage, no extra space has been used up. the only way i can get my device to save data again is to power it down, take out the battery, put the battery back in and power it up again. quite frustrating, but perhaps see if that fixes your problem?
Whats the speed of the card?
It is class 4

Anyone else having this issue with Darkside ROM? I have read posts about other ICE ROM's having this issue. High battery drain, phone gets quite hot. Will drain battery in about 2-3 hours. Check battery stats and Media Server is using 70-80% of total battery usage. Anyone else figured out how to get around this? Someone mentioned a corrupted audio or video file. I removed all media files to my PC, reformatted SD card, and rebooted phone, but problem still persists. I love ICS, but only getting 2-3 hours battery life is not going to cut it.
KT
You have to format emmc, external sd, and system. There's probably corrupt data somewhere. Backup what you don't wanna lose, this gets rid of everything

Did all that, and still have the same issue. Even tried with new SD card, and with no SD card. Factory reset, super wipe, clear everything, format, etc. Fresh boot up, no new apps installed, and the damn media server is blasting along taking 70% or more of the battery. Phone gets really hot. This is basically making the phone unusable. I don't know if it is something specific to my phone but I guess I will have to go back to GB until the official release of ICS from T-Mo is out. Hope that fixes the problem.

I removed my external and reformatted it in my computer and while that was formatting, I booted backup & reformatted internal through system settings, then when that was done, powered off and inserted external, rebooted and its ran perfect ever since.
I think it's important to reformat both internal & external cards when you have that issue.

Well it has been asked many times in this phone's section why it reboots. Somewhere I've read that it might be the SD card. I got Kingmax 16gb class 6 Micro SD hc card, and I've noticed after I install some ICS or the "official" 4.1.2 jelly bean it works fine at the beggining. After I put the music and pictures on SD card which take about 4gb space it continues to do well for first few hours (once even a whole day) and then it suddenly restarts. After that first restart the phone starts restarting more frequently like 3-4 times a day, and it annoys me. Is it maybe the SD card problem? And is there any way to check it?

remove the sd card and use the phone without it, if it still restarting on its own . The rom you're using is the problem

Well I did remove, but I didn't use it for more than 2 hours like that, not a whole day.
Try another memory card with different class
And play song on third party apps like google play music or poweramp etc..
Try memory card on different phone & check memory card is damaged or not
Dump the memory card on water (do it your self i am not resposible for any damage) dry with clean soft cloth
If not working this method
Reset your mobile
Flash your mobile or goto service center
