I personally would go with the Samsung, for the simple fact I need an SD card and would like to be able to pull the battery out when things go wrong instead of having to walk upstairs to connect it to my pc and adb reboot it.
I had a quick play with them both today at the phone shop in town and they are both amazingly fast, I know the HTC screen is better but I couldn't tell the difference between them, as for processors and gpu's I believe they are both equally matched at what they do, I've seen benchmarks that put each on top so really in my eyes its down to personal preferance. Ask in a shop if you can have a little play with them before you decide which you want.

I disagree had a week with the samsung galaxy s3 and too be frank hated it the touch wiz is annoying and unhelpful and the design was cheap. The home button was also a big pain because it was sometimes unresponsive and didn't spring back as well as i had hoped.
I recently just changed to a htc one x, and undoubtably the best choice i have ever made, regarding a smartphone, the new sense is clean an intuitive and thanks to the super fast processor its just incredible. But one of my favourite things is the support for the rooting community so you will have zero trouble if your looking to install a custom rom of some sort or over clocking or what ever.
Plus samsung never update their phones so you will be stuck on ics forever.

Come off it, this is xda.........
The s3 will go far beyond ics wether there's an official update or not. They said we couldn't get gb on a wildfire and look at us now!
And from what I've been reading dev support for the s3 is also on the rise, in fact they have one of the best giving them full support.
Also you don't have to use tw just the same as you don't have to use sense if you don't like it.

I'd say that the S2 got the update to ICS relatively quick, compared to other OEMs.

It won't make it past ics with official updates, people will have to use custom roms. also the the s 2 didnt get it very quickly ics was announced and released in october - November time and the s2 got updated in march i think. ( at least on my carrier )
Do you need an sd card slot with 32 gigs of space

Still rather go for the one x its fast, easy to root ( if on this forum its important to you) , lots of roms are available and its a phone that will easily last a two year contact with its great build.
Go with HOX on this one man

Yes I do need an SD card with as much space as I can get, quite often my 16gb SD card is full and needs cleaning up, I have a limited data plan so the extra space (23gb) that you get from dropbox is still not feasible.
So Samsung don't do updates yet the s2 has an official ics update and I reckon there's more to come for it and others too.
Reading this makes me think that HTC haven't exactly been quick off the mark with it.
"The target timeline for announced devices is below. Because of partner and network testing, and approval processes for device updates, it can take up to 45 days for all carriers and countries to get the update after a rollout has begun.Device Schedule

[Q] Any news on New HTC Sense for Desire?

Hi All,
Anyone know of any news whether we will be getting a ROM Upgrade or a HTC Sense update for the Desire at all?
Thanks
read on a thread somewhere in here that it is coming to desires in december.
Or u could always flash hd rom. Sense hd i mean
Patience my friend, it's coming in December
Aye December, my guess is it will be included with Gingerbread update.
Yay! Thanks guys, I love this board so much. Maybe it sounds odd, but I hate flashing ROMs rather than using the stock ones. Just feels dirty
Awaiting December.
what have you guys been smoking there will be no gingerbread or sence update i can guarantee you that

experience.... first of all the desire is nearly a year old, waaay to old for htc support in my experience. secondly, htc want us to buy new handsets not keep our old ones, it makes no sence updating old hardware. and finally, the htc legend is only a few months older than our desire and they dont even have froyo yet, so you give me an example of htc supporting year old hardware with new software updates and i will rescind my comments

What you say is true, of course hTC would want us to buy the Desire HD & Z, but the Desire is less than 7 months old (announced in April, realeased in May/ June), not 1 year old, that means nearly all Desire users are still bound by their contracts. If hTC was to abandon the Desire, how would their customers feel? that hTC keeps on pushing out new models but leaving the older models to wither & die? I think not...
but only time would tell

good point were all second guessing htc anyway, only they know what devices there going to continue to support
If the new Sense doesn't come to Desire do you think it'd be possible to at least get HTC's offline Maps app - like they have with other features?
I bought a Hero when it came - so I know all about HTC not supporting devices. The first update I got for that phone came in June (Eclair).
And the thing about that update was that it came in two packages. It was a ****ty update I didn't use.
It's a fact that HTC doesn't support their own devices. When it comes to the Desire, I'm hoping they won't **** on us again, it's not outdated yet.
Or maybe it is to HTC - Still. I'm going to have this phone for another 9 months so it'd be nice with at least one official update.
HTC - "We make new phones for you.
Get rid of the old one, seriously."

Nothing makes me angry than ignorance. This is ignorance of the highest order. The iPhone 3G was released in July 2008 and it's still getting firmware updates. The Desire is barely 7 months old.

The iPhone is an iPhone.
The iPhone was not made by HTC
Apple makes the iPhone
HTC and Apple are not the same
Apple/iPhone - supported.
HTC/Any device - unsupported.
It's not ignorance. It's basic knowledge. HTC doesn't continue supporting devices. Apple might. HTC doesn't.
Then again, that's one of the reasons XDA exists.

dont call me ignorant, instead educate yourself, the reason even 2g iphones still get firmware updates is so apple can keep the tyrannic grip on what software they use!!! htc dont use this method, and after owning maybe 10 htc devices in the last 10 years, i think i can speak with experience.

Wasn't really trying to start a rumor. Just that gingerbread is expected from Google 4th quarter and new sense expected December made sense to me that HTC would wait and give one last update together.
i seriously hope that's the case, but it seems unlikely and I think It'll be up to XDA to get gingerbread onto the Desire...
It makes me kinda sad to read this. I know it's true and yet I always hope HTC changes their game plan and just support older devices.
I know they want ppl to buy their new devices but why would you buy a HTC you can only use for roughly a half year and then get outdated software.
Why not choose for a Samsung Galaxy S? mayB they have better support for their devices (just an example).
but I hope we all get proven wrong!!
There is a reason because HTC is going to upgrade our Desires. I think HTC want to boost the htcsense.com portal and for this, new sense is required, and what hardware can use new sense? Only Desire. So it’s a way to get a lot of users without waiting the sales of Z and HD

no, older phones can also support HTCSense, this can be proven as they announced that all future HTC Android devices will support HTCSense (both Entry level [eg.wildfire type] and Enterprise level [eg. Desire type]). but HTC are holding them off entry level phones as they are stingy and want us to buy more phones from them.

HTC Annoucement related to 2.3 and Sense

http://www.facebook.com/notes/htc-romania/gingerbread-pentru-htc-desire/223475751011104
They say that HTC Desire memory doesn't support Sense and 2.3. As usual, the smart guys around here proved that it does work
It doesn't have the memory for it, we know that. The Devs have proved it can run it but only using EXT partitions on the SD card which Google won't use as the average user won't know how to make one
Quote:
"Our teams of engineers have worked hard in recent months to update the Gingerbread HTC HTC Desire without compromising Sense experience that you have grown accustomed to our phones. However, we are sorry but we must assume that there is enough memory to allow portability and storage Gingerbread experience on HTC HTC Sense Desire. We are very sorry for the disappointment that this news will cause many of you."
So... They say it will stick on froyo or update with old sense?

So HTC say that the phone can't run Gingerbread and Sense - but the leaked one did...?
so why not leave the old sense on and update the phone - or better yet - update it to the latest version of Froyo and fix the bugs with the HTC mail etc. so that it can work with Hotmail EAS...
little things would be nicer than squat... even though I'm not going to use it
Well, this is my first and last htc device.
I totally don't care... Sense UI sucks, CyanogenMod, MIUI & AdamG are the best
this is bull**** guys!!
the wildifre S has the same amount of memory and runs gingerbread and sense 2.1 and even with the 3.0 lockscreen!!!! their just as lazy as ****
I am so f.... mad right now, was waiting for this f.... gingerbread and now he wont come... I wont buy HTC phone anymore just becouse this tease. And I am going to tell all my friends not to buy any of their products anymore.

That's a shame - I do like HTC's phones and the only thing that let this phone down was the low internal memory situation, and their excuse for this too.
I'd buy another but i'd be a little cautious about it next time.
My Blackstone/Touch HD is still working very well, and that hasn't had any updates for ages but it looks like a NAND image may be coming soon for it which will spring some life into it again...
So the Desire is far from dead as the dev's here can perform miracles sometimes...
still plan on keeping my phone for the remainder of this year at least with the hopes that the custom roms keep me going!
Wow, a lot of fickle people on this forum...
Guys, we were never guaranteed updates from HTC at any point. The fact we got FroYo was because it was the top line device at the time. You can't compare the Wildfire S to the Desire. The Desire is over a year old, the Wildfire is less than a month old - of course it'll get a new version.

I mentioned before that the Google I/O stated that manufacturers should put the latest version on phones if the hardware can cope - if that applies here then that is a great get-out-clause for not upgrading the desire..
although - we do know that HTC worked on it - see leaked rom.

... but don't forget; when desire came to the market (April 2010) it came with v2.1 eclair, then abt 4 months later, upgraded to 2.2 froyo whereas SE-X10 came with 1.6 (donut) almost at the same time with the desire and upgraded to eclair in November or December 2010, on the other side, Samsung Galaxy-S came with eclair in summer 2010, upgraded to froyo just two or three months ago (know that it will receive GB too soon).. shortly I cannot blame or judge HTC with that; when I decided to buy my Desire, it was the best choice to date (April 2010). Now the only way to root and step into the cooked rom world.
Cheers!

Good-bye (and thanks for all the fish...)

After yesterday's disapointing release I finally bit the bullet and got a new 'phone from my network operator. I was offered a choice between the HTC sensation and the Samsung Galaxy II and I went for the latter mainly because I was not impressed with the HTC approach to the GB update. I will move to reading their section in xda.
To all those that have helped me either through lurking on their threads or by answering my questions I just wanted to say thank-you!

Laters!
if you want updates you need to go Nexus really.
Samsung are flavour of the month for the moment - but remember their FroYo release? It took about 3-4 months after HTC's release...
Failing that you just need to go AOSP with a custom rom - which you can do on almost any handset.
Perhaps you should address your goodbye to HTC directly
here you are

Have you heard of custom roms?

I love my Desire
I love the my Desire, and pretty sure it is going to be the Android phone I would use for at least 1.5 years.
The main reason being there are so many Desire users, the ROMs just keep coming and getting better.
Like op i've moved from a desire to a sgs2 for many reasons, mainly my contract was up and I didn't like the lag on the sensation screen! But what gets me is how many people keep going on about custom roms for the desire. Of course there are loads the phone is old in tech year's, I'm sure the same will happen to the sgs2 in about 6 months, but to be honest I don't find much difference between the 2 apart from never having to think about how many applications I can have. Ie running out of memory! As they say you pay ya money and make ya choice.

I was thinking of selling my desire and buy a Sensation but when I read all those user comments about all the issues I changed my mind, sensation still have that nice look, but when we talk about software I cant say the same of what I hear, now I dont know what to do to keep desire and wait until they release some new phone wich will work normal, or give up of HTC and buy some other brand with android.

True, but Samsung didn't promise Desire users Gingerbread and a new version of Sense and failed to deliver.
I got the Desire based on this, and know I feel they flipped the finger, so I can't really blame OP for ditching HTC.
I'm surprised google didn't have a word with them since google set out a baseline for all phone manufacturers that each handset should get at least 18 month's of updates? Therefore google is saying the max size each version of android is gonna be and the processing power requirements! It's like the htc wildfire this will never see gingerbread as it has the same if not less memory and power than the desire! Yet its a newer phone than the desire! Or is it google just doesn't care? And is letting phone manufacturers get away with it?

I love when people talk about companies "promising" something and then moan when it doesn't happen. Reminds me of the old days in the school playground...
From what I can see, HTC did thier best to deliver, but unfortunately the constraints of the device stopped them being able to do more. What do people expect them to do, come over and upgrade the memory in each phone?
Some people just want the moon on a stick.

buy a new smart phone

Hi friends
now i have htc hd2 and i want to buy a new phone, and now the two handset doubt one x and nexus 4. If you help me?
Compare them on internet, go to a phone store and put them next to eachother. Decide which fits you the most.
This is a personal opinion. Nobody can decide what phone you should buy.
You can add HTC one in that list as well.
If you want fast updates and good custom ROM support, go for the N4.
HTC is not particularly good with those two areas.
This is not a personal opinion, it's a fact.
Sent from my One X using xda premium
I used to use a HTC HD2 from 2009 Nov, still have my hd2 in good working condition. Upgraded to HTC OneX in 2012 April.. no regrets yet.
I'm not sure about N4, pardon my ignorance.. but I do have friends with latest android devices from samsung/ motorola etc. I always do get the most awesome roms/tweaks/themes thanks to the wonderful community at XDA.
I personally love Sense and HTC One X lets you run the latest Sense with its full glory without any lags, if you ask me having an option to run Sense is itself worth selecting HOX over N4, you can always switch back to AOSP if you ever dislike it.
Additionally the image sense chip on HOX is awesome.. I can always vouch that I get the best pic with my slim mobile
Only the single issue with HOX is it doesn't have S-Off yet, that means once you unlock, no way of going back to a state where you can proof that you haven't unlocked your phone. That might be the only reason, why my next device might not be a HTC. But honestly, I'll miss sense.

Samsung/Sony next for me...
Really want one of the new xperia's !! TAKE IT IN THE BATH !!!
Apart from nexus devices, most carrier upgrades leave a lot to be desired timescale-wise. Wouldn't recommend sony for quick upgrades, or customer service(talking from experience...).
It's fairly straightforward though. There are no high-end phones from 2012/13 that will disappoint performance wise so try them out and see which you prefer.
samsung has maybe faster updates, problem is they are so bad that instead of that i wait some weeks more for htc updates and get best out of the phones htc is still the best in all
As a nexus owner I can say that nexus experience is unparalleled. It represents absolute customizability and control over how you want your device to be. Then again HTC and Sammy has better cameras, possibly better displays. You can calibrate nexus 4 display and make it look as good or better than one x or s3.
Ultimately like the previous comments I'd suggest try before you buy.

I have returned my one x twice under warranty with just flashing a nandroid of stock and relocking the bootloader. Device shown the security alert but no questions asked. First for the WiFi squeeze issue for which they fixed and replaced the back case. Looked brand new. Then I just fastbooted the unlock token and rooted again. Second return for signal / no imei number for which I got a new motherboard. Both jobs took 5 days - send and return. Very pleased with customer service of HTC. I'm in UK if that makes any difference.

I think and i can imagine, that it can be the most probable, that if htc update the hox, they are going to update to 4.4 because 4.3 is a minimalistic update from 4.2.2 so it can be a lost of time, so if we can expect a update it is going to be 4.4, that is what all the phone companies are doing, they are updating their phones to android 4.4 and they jump the minimal update of 4.3, anyways we have to wait!

if htc wan to compete with samsung...htc better give hox 4.4 update as galaxy s3 also getting 4.4...
Jeff Gordon from HTC said "Who told you we are dropping support for the One X ?" on twitter. Ok I have 2 possible theories why we *may* get 4.4
1. Because of the whole 4.2.2 and 4.3 mess.
See, unlike us, a majority of newer devices such as the One, One Dev Edition, Butterlfy, Droid DNA and Butterfly S did not receive 4.2.2. During that time, 4.3 was just announced and HTC opted to jump straight to 4.3 for those devices. Now, this was fine since if you look at their changelogs, 90% of the 4.3 update for them was what we got in 4.2.2. Fair enough. They were finally receiving the things we got. Now, the reason why they didn't update our phones to 4.3 was because I believe the amount of improvements were too little. So they just skipped it since 4.4 was on the way. What they may do now is jump 4.3 and go to 4.4 for us since it's pointless to give us 4.3 now. This is all due to the system requirements being halved and probably because of the One X+
2. Now, like I've said before, if they were to drop the One X at this point, it'd be understandable since it's more than 18 months now. However, the One X+ isn't. They have no real reason to drop it. Now, if they were to support the One X+ but not the One X, it would look REALLY bad because both devices are identical, just a minor bump in front camera specs, internal memory and a newer type of T3, all of which do not influence the ability to run 4.4. Plus, the Nexus 7 2012 like I have still has SoC support from nVidia, so they can't pull a fast one by saying they have no SoC support. They do.
Remember, this is my theory. It's based on my own reasoning and what I've managed to make out of the whole situation. Take it with a pinch of salt, knowing that our devices have seen 3 major Android versions and that is on par with or even better than Nexus devices. Don't see what I mean ? The Nexus One started with 2.2, updated to and died at 2.3. The Nexus S started with 2.3, updated to 4.0 and died at 4.1. The Galaxy Nexus started with 4.0, updated to 4.1 and 4.2.2 and finally died at 4.3. See ? Excluding the Gnex, we are on par and have even surpassed the Nexus line. So I am happy. Guess what I'm trying to say is, there may be hope but at the same time don't get over excited. As for the tweet by Football, it may have been just his own speculation, since we all figured this phone died at 4.2.2. At the time, he didn't even see the features for 4.4 and he probably didn't know about the rush HTC was making to get 4.4 out onto the One within 90 days.
@RohinZaraki...agree with your statement...since nvidia still supporting 2012 nexus 7...htc can get the sources too....so hox & hox+ should get android 4.4 update too...one x+ just 1 yr old phone...
If I should have to add a 3rd reason why that news article seems sorta legit to me, I'd say because the list of devices there seem reasonable. Look at the HTC section itself. All high end devices with respectable specs. Same can be said about Samsung and Sony. I'm not too sure about the hierarchy of LG devices but they seem reasonable to me too. I remember the Sense 5 4.2.2 update was a little hard to swallow for us since the One S was also listed, but this seems like a more reasonable list. Hopefully they are right.
Is look like imaginary post

If Samsung update the GS3 to 4.4 then HTC are going to put a nail in their coffin if they don't update the HOX.
Pity there is no easy way to get S-Off as that would make updates irrelevant to me then. (unlocked boot loader is lame in comparison)

From the information football (they changed their name? Llabtoofer?) has provided in the past, I think they're a safe bet
