T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy SII Warranty Replacements - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So I've had the SII since October. My original was fine (minus excessive blobs and lines which I just lived with) until I updated to the LDE update through Kies. I was stock unrooted at the time, and it sent it into a boot loop. Couldn't get it to master reset or even get into download mode. I took it in to T-Mobile and they couldn't get it to reset either. They ordered me a warranty replacement.
The replacement I received had random reboot issues. Serious issues, as in it randomly rebooted 50+ times in the 24 hours I had it. Master resets did not solve the issue. T-Mobile ordered me another warranty replacement.
The next replacement had a scratched screen. Very scratched, all over the screen, but very fine scratches that I only noticed it once it was in sunlight. It actually seemed they were underneath the screen, as you could not feel them when running your fingers over it. But severe enough the screen became unusable in sunlight. I had this one less than 24 hours. T-Mobile ordered me another replacement.
This replacement has a scuff mark on the internal body (which would normally be covered by the battery cover), left of the camera. There is also a horizontal line under the screen, approx. 1 1/2 inches from the top. It goes to mid screen, then a vertical line from that for approx. 3/4 inch, then another horizontal line to the other edge of the screen. This is noticeable in sunlight, whether screen is on or off. The screen matrix (pixel matrix?) is absolutely noticeable in sunlight as well. I've had this phone less than 24 hours. T-Mobile ordered me another replacement.
Has anyone else had issues with replacements? Is there any way to get them to send me a new phone instead of the refurbished (they confirmed all replacements are refurbished) ones I'm receiving?

Got my replacement from Samsung after the screen died. Well they didn't replace it, they just fix the problems (and replaced the dinged bezel) and sent it back. It was perfect after that.
I've never heard of bad coming from T-Mobiles replacement, but if they can't get it right, I'd suggest trying Samsung.

I've thought about just sending it in to Samsung if the next phone doesn't work out, especially since this will be the 4th replacement. I have another phone I can use (my HTC T-Mobile G2) in the meantime. How long did it take to get yours back?

They wouldn't except a repair on my phone which had tons of lines, because there was a scratch the screen which "voided the warranty"...

It took 10 days, if I remember correctly

I also bought my phone back in October. Despite the lines and blob issue, I did not get it replaced. Recently my phone call were directly going into my voicemail. Even after the master reset, problem persisted and T-mobile agreed to replace the phone under warranty.
Even though I was told that it will take up to 7 business days to get the replacement, I received mine in 2 days. Although there is no definite way to tell, but my replacement phone looked brand new and has not given me any problems so far. It doesn't even have the line/blob issue!
While talking to T-mobile I was assertive that this is my only phone and I need the replacement ASAP. I also asked for a new phone rather than a refurbished one. The rep told me she'll put a notification on the account but there is no way to guarantee that the replacement phone will be new. I guess it worked!
I hope this helps.
Good Luck!

So i received replacement #4 today. Initial inspection found no significant body damage, but there are still 2 horizontal lines of about a 1/4 inch on two sides of the screen noticeable in sunlight.
I'm beginning to think I'm being overly critical because of the previous faulty replacements I received. So i've decided to just keep this one. At this point I'm tired of the back and forth with the phones.
If I find I can't live with the screen issues at a later time, I'll either contact Samsung directly for it to be fixed or replaced, or ask T-Mobile about the alternate exchange program.
This one is now rooted and ready for some awesome custom ROMs that will be dropping shortly now that we have source!
Thanks for the tips/advice!

Man...sorry about that. I live in Puerto Rico. When i went to the store for a warranty replacement they gave me a brand new phone. I think all depends on their staff. Some are nice...some are not. Im telling you this because before go to this store i tried a different one...one close to where i live and the girl was so rude. She didnt even care nothing at all. Then i dedided to go to a different store and this girl was such a blessing. She gave me a new one and told me: Nobody gave you this phone as a present...if you paid for it you need a new one!

Im on my 4th now. Well itll be here on tuesday. I just got my thirdyesterday and the mic doesnt work. So during calls no one can hear me unless i put it on speaker. The secpnd they sent me had usb port issues and the last was completely screwy. I was firm with the last rep and asked if there was another option. They vasically said that their alternate exchange normally would come into effwct now because of how many defective phones ive had in the last 90 days but because this is "their best phone" any other phone would be considered a downgrade. The rep i spoke to today actually said that she noted the account so if my fourth has issues to just check if i can get something else first . Doesnt the sgs3 come ot on the 20th?. You think theyd give me that?. No, i havent scammed the system because i generally have had so many issues with this phone, unrooted abd rooted.

Still is, but only if they are offering an alternate replacement for the phone. Currently, T-Mobile is not offering any phone as an alternate replacement for the S2. Only a refurbished unit, or a new S2 if you're lucky depending on the inventory of refurbished units when your order is pulled. I looked into the alternate replacement and have verified it at multiple levels.

I recently had to replace a sgs2 under php warranty. Had horrid washed out screen colored and looked as if brushed aluminum. I am glad cuz right after the box arrived my original made in China t989 with the horrid build quality bricked and would never start again after I wiped and did a factory reset. The model I got as my replacement was made in Korea and had stock ICS installed. Also the screen is perfect and amazing.
I have to ask to those of you with nasty screens with blotches and lines. Are they made in China or Korea? I wonder if it is just China crap quality that is the cause while Korean made phones look and work well.

I just got my new from PHP too. Original was korea, new one is made in China. China's lines and blobs are way way less noticable. GPS seems to work faster. Wifi connects without a problem, but that may be the ICS.

I bought my GS2 used from Craigslist.
The previous owner didn't keep the phone on rubber case. So its got hairline scratches all over the plastic body and 2 dings. Butt he screen is flawless.
It pisses me of sometimes to look at the phone when I take it off the rubber case. Its probably not nice for someone who takes care of their devices and wants them in near mint condition.
I thought about switching my device with warranty exchange, but always feel bad about it. If I exchange it, the device has to have real fault. And Actually do have an issue with non-responsive touchscreen.
Its not happened again since ICS. Also reason I am not rooting is because I do want to exchange the device is the screen goes bonkers again.
But dam it would be nice if the previous owner took better care of the phone. Otherwise I'm happy with the phone. Sorta, still waiting on CM7/CM9 to arrive on this phone, bug free

My messed up screen

The screen on my 20 day old E4GT started flickering and had gray alternating lines down the screen but strangely only from the taskbar down. If you rotate the clear part stayed on the same part of the screen. Took it to sprint...hopefully I get a new one. Rocking my vibrant for the evening.

Not necessarily true. I got a replacement a couple of weeks ago for my device which I had a few days after launch. My replacement didn't come in the retail box but it was not a refirb. I confirmed this by running a qst code (I forget off the top of my head) and there is a "reconditioned" field that will either say yes or no. But that was a few weeks ago and maybe by now they do have refirb units available. I lucked out though

Ugh, got the refurb unit today. It looks like there's splotches behind the screen. It's stationary when you move the screen. Almost as if it was a splotchy image burnt in the screen. It was also having trouble refreshing when I was doing the activation. You think sprint'll give me another unit with an acceptable screen?

Had to get my sprint Gnex replaced.

Hey guys, I posted a thread last week of a problem I had with my stock unrooted gnex. The problem was that everytime I went to the settings, the settings app would crash and wouldn't let me press "more" in order to access mobile network modes etc.
I rooted it and flashed a couple of roms and the issue kept returning. I un-rooted it this morning and reflashed via odin the latest stock FD02 tar thinking the issue would be gone since everything was going to be wiped. The issue came back again so I went to the sprint store (thank god for TEP) and the techs were acting like it wasnt a big deal. They reset the phone 4 times (the tech did it in fornt of me) and the issue was still there.
So 1 and a half hour later, the manager comes out and tells me she ordered me a new phone (probably a refurb but who cares at this point ) and it would arrive on thursday.
the tech started joking around with me at the end saying that if I got a bad gnex from the factory, that he would give me a NIB GSIII. I hope thats the case haha But I still love my Gnex and its peppy updates and hate touch wiz to death.
Interesting thanks for sharing bud

I can say from experience, since I had an evo 4g before the nexus and my wife has an iphone 4s. We have gone through TEP with both devices.
Lets start with the Evo.
I was getting a lot of dropped calls, the speakers were worn out sounding poorly, it started turning on and off by itself. Went to sprint, the techs diagnosed that there was no water damage or accident damage so they didn't ask for the deductible and ordered me a phone. Replacement arrived in a generic white sprint box, the tech used the same battery I had and gave me a working phone (no scratches, dings or anything looked brand new)
My wifes iphone 4s
The bluetooth wasn't holding a connection to her cars bluetooth system or any bluetooth device at all. The techs diagnosed it and gave her the same treatment. The phone came in a generic box looking new and worked fine.
The story behind whether you ACTUALLY get a refurb or a truly new phone is this.
When the rep places the phone order the system tells him if there are any refurbished units at their warehouse. When there are none the warehouse itself sends a totally new not refurbished phone in the same generic box.
How do you know if you got a new phone or a refurb? Theres no way in my experience (I've had to order around 4 phones in the past 5 years with TEP and they have always worked great and looked new)
If you file a claim with asurion (theft, accidental damage or water damage) they send you a brand new phone after paying the $100 deductible.(happened with 1 phone that I dropped and cracked the screen)
interesting. what i was mostly wondering about was the screen on the gnex. i remember when i had the nexus 4g, people that went through tep said that the screen was replaced with a different one. it wasnt oled, or whatever the original screen was.
I had the issue when I flashed cm9 and paranoid android Roms. But the issue was only the roms

Interesting, It could be a temporary outage of the parts.
I know for certain that for the iphones, the refurbish process is done by apple
So I would think that samsung is responsible for supplying sprints refurb units. Since the screen is made by Samsung themselves they should focus on putting the right screens.
and thursday can't come fast enough My gnex is now getting delayed texts. A lot of people text me, like once an hour the phone is ringing all of the messages that were sent to me at once during that period of time.

Samsung warranty on ICS freeze issues

I was curious what experiences all have had with Samsung's tech dept. I am sending in my phone for warranty due to wifi issues and freezing screen which happens when it feels like it. Also having to reboot or pull battery after phone calls won't hang up properly. They just freeze everything.. Tech suggested they need to do some software settings to cure the issue.
This sucks because after a few replacements I actually got a screen that has none of the lines and blobs that my previous phones were having. I tried the SGS3 and had the same freeze and wifi issues so returned that one. No luck with the phone gods lately I suppose.
What kind of actual turn around do they have?

Cool, glad to hear they are quick. They don't give you the same phone back ? Finally found one without lines and blobs. The freeze issue is a bummer. Did your new phone have issues with lines and blobs in the screen?
If you are talking about sending the phone directly to Samsung, they generally will send the same phone back to you, repaired. You're looking at 1-2 weeks turnaround.
If talking about T-Mobile, and doing a warranty claim, which it looks like the other commenter was, they will send you a refurbished replacement within 24-48 business hours, depending on how late the order is placed. Those are hit or miss, I went through 6 warranty exchanges in just over a month, all with varied issues. 6th replacement is "good enough" for me, was tired of the hassle anyway.

Yeah same here, refurbs are definitely hit or miss.. I got 3 in a row with multiple bad pixels, one with the FFC offset and crooked before I called back and had an over-the-phone total flake-out and they gave me a early upgrade offer for the SGSIII, which I refused because at the end of the offer they tried to drain me of cash with a 25% off retail offer and extending my contract another 2 years after the upgrade if I chose to accept it. LOL

My replacement phone is way worse than original!

Guys I need some suggestions. About 2 weeks ago I dropped my S3 and smashed the screen. So I used my insurance and ordered another one. I absolutely loved my S3 before......
But the new one that they sent me is absolutely slow and laggy and its driving me insane! Everything I do takes a tiny split second longer than normal, but after a while it gets very annoying. Especially since I know what a perfect working one feels like.
When I press the side button to unlock the phone, its laggy lighting up.
When I swype to unlock the phone, its laggy getting to the home screen.
When I hit the bottom home button, its laggy coming back.
You get my drift...
My original was super quick and snappy, and now this thing is driving me nuts.
What would you suggest that I do? Its been this way right out of the box.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Root it and install a custom ROM, most of them will make even a good device feel umpteen times better. If it's still running poorly after you've tried a few ROMs then box it back up and take it to a store or call the insurance company back and explain the problem.

Thanks, yea ive thought about rooting it. Ive just never rooted a phone before so I was hoping there was something I could do that was basic and might fix the problem.
It seems unlikely it's a hardware problem. I'd start with a factory reset and see it it's still laggy, then slowly install apps until you figure out what's slowing down the phone.
I'd guess something in the background is grabbing CPU cycles.
update?

Just out of curiosity, did your replacement device look brand new...or did it look refurbished? They say you cant tell, however, i do know from experience that refurbished phones can show some damage. The reason i'm asking is because the Galaxy SIII is so new i would find it amazing that they already have refurbished devices to distribute on insurance claims. If it was brand new you would know. I would call sprint or your insurance provider and demand a new phone if the lag doesnt resolve itself. Sprint charges almost DOUBLE the price for insurance on the galaxy SIII compared to many other devices. I would be pissed if i didn't get a prefect SIII.
Also, I would strongly advise picking up an OtterBox case for your SIII, those things can keep your phone safe during a nuclear war.

I am surprised that the same area is affected. I would encourage you to call and at least report it so it would get on there"known problem"list . I described it in details to the representativeand told them the phone is brand new and I have no intention to go to a store to have it checked

i had that problem but i took it off and put that section back on first. I dont remember where on the phone it was but it was bugging me. I havent had a problem since, but that was only yesterday
I remember mine did that when I first got it. Not sure what I did to stop it, maybe what the last poster did. Ive had a case on mine though.

Same issue here. Got a replacement cover from Samsung coming. If it doesn't fix the issue Sprint agreed to replace my phone. I have had mine since release day but filed a formal exchange request before the 14 day period was over explaining my situation and Samsung's proposed resolution. I suggest anyone nearing their 14 day expiration to consider doing the same. I want to avoid a replacement if possible because I already set up everything exactly the way I want it, but if the new cover does nothing the phone is going back. FYI, tried a few local Sprint stores and nobody had a phone in stock to let me test the cover swap. Went to Best Buy and although they had none left the guy said he has seen this issue in a lot of the Note 2s already. He even said the 1st gen Notes suffered from a similar manufacturing defect.

I had this issue on the opposite side. It ended up being the hook/snap. I used my car key to push down the edges around the hook and boom it works like it should. I'm not sure it that will fix everyone's but it worked for me. Also the sprint store wouldn't need a regular cover. The flip cover replaces the back so it should work as well.

Yes. PITA too.
Think QA from Sprint and/or Samsung belongs to or reads XDA?
I have this issue too. The hook seems to have cracked..
Same thing here since day one.

i don't have the problem since i bought the samsung cover, but i believe the old touch pro 2 had that problem. to fix it we had to put a folded up piece odf paper under the case over the battery. it helped the cover keep its shape. the flexjng caused the cover to pop off. maybe it'll work for this phone too.

are you getting the cover under warranty or did you buy it?
Warranty. They're sending me a new cover free of charge and a return UPS label to give them back my old one (wonder what they're gonna do with it, lol).

I've never had that issue on my TP2, but if I recall correctly the cover on that phone wasn't nearly as flimsy and soft as the one on the Note2.
Problem SOLVED!
Guys...the back cover is very poorly designed. When I picked up my GN2 on release day at the sprint store, the girl handed me the demo model so I could see it. I noticied immediately that the back cover was loose by the volume keys. Pulled it off, saw broken hook immediately. I then insisted that I would put the back cover on myself on mine when they took it out of the box, and I never had that issue again. Unlike the GS3 which I upgraded from, which had snaps all around, this one has snaps, and also tabs on the bottom and a hook by the volume keys, which means if you put it on the same way as an S3, YOU WILL BREAK THE HOOKS/TABS! You can't just push it on. Not the users fault, as Samsung made this both extremely difficult to do, and provided no clear instructions on installation/removal. I use multiple batteries and therefore remove it about once per day, and I've had the phone since release day. Unfortunately, without redesigning the actual phone housing itself, I fear it will be impossible for Samsung to fix this by just redesigning the cover. If yours isn't broken yet, just follow my video on proper installation and removal of the back cover. If yours already broke, grab an in-warranty replacement from Samsung and follow my instructions from now on, otherwise this will keep happening. Below is a link to a quick how-to video I made.

Nice video, will try that method when my cover gets here.

Did you call sprint or assurion?
Neither, I called Samsung directly.
