[Q] Is the Route66 License Transferable? - HTC One X

Is the Route66 license used in HTC Car Navigation transferable to other device? E.g. if i switch device in the future, can i use the same license and activate it on other mobile?

That's one you need to ask them, but I doubt it.
They are appauling at customer service. The first licence I ever bought never worked in the first place! Never mind it being transferred to another device. Despite numerous emails they wouldn't attempt to resolve it or refund me. They couldn't have cared less. Took my business to co-pilot, never had a moment's problems. Licence transferred from Desire S to HOX with no issues. Much better navigation too.

thanks, looks like i'll be looking for other solution as well.
Any idea is it possible to add 3rd party navigation in HTC Car? only the route66 / google navigation is available and there seems to be no options of adding 3rd party apps (i kindof like the HTC Car mode )

I don't think it's transferable.
I had the license(voucher) with my Sensation and when I switched to the HOX with the same Sense account, it was no longer available.

Unfortunately I don't think there is at present, not until HTC realise how universally unpopular HTC Locations seems to be and ends it's deal with route 66.
I have mentioned this somewhere else but kind find the post right now so an alternative (until someone hacks HTC Car) would be this:
Use an automation app like Tasker to create your own Car Mode. This is what I use. At the press of one button when I want to use Co-Pilot navigation, Tasker does the following;
1. Screen Brightness to 90%
2. GPS = On
3. Bluetooth = On
4. 3G = Off
5. Auto Sync = Off
6. Wait 1 second
7. Launch App: Co-Pilot Premium
8. Media Volume to 100%
The only reason I use Co-Pilot instead of Google navigation is I need off-line maps. I suspect when Nokia and their Ovi maps (also off-line) combine with the pressure from Apple's new up-coming navigation (also off-line maps I believe) then Google will finally offer us off line mapping too. Fingers crossed!

yes, it is transferrable.
I transferred my license from my Sensation XL to the HOX with no problems whatsoever. HTC support did it for me. However, i paid for mine, rather than as a freebie with a voucher.
as for using something different, i believe the team pkmn charmander rom has an option to change HTC Car to use whatever nav app you like.

Google Maps + Navigation

Hey all,
I welcome myself to xda-developers come on all the time but just haven't registered or posted before... I received my HTC Desire from mobiles.co.uk yesterday from their new batch of Vodafone stock. We'll all be glad to hear they are now all retail versions, with retail packaging where the phone is packaged in some plastic too, I'll post some pics later.
Now to what matters most: I found a cheat way to get into the Google Navigation Beta app that is PRE-INSTALLED on the HTC Desire. (At least in build 1.15.405.4 (which probably isn't much different from .3)
Long press on the home screen to place down a shortcut and select Directions & Navigation. It will allow you to preset a Navigation to a location with a quick shortcut. Finish the setup and click save, and then clicking the shortcut will launch Google Navigation Beta!
EXCEPT: Unfortunately, it doesn't actually seem to work (in the UK?)! You get Waiting for location, but once it finds that I am outside the US (it finds me perfectly on Google Maps), it gives me an error No route found: Navigation to your destination is not available to which I have no option but to click Exit Navigation, which then closes the App.
So fellow Desire owners, how can we get around that?
Try out the Brut Mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887
The audio is intermittently absent - but the display is spot on and works in the UK.

[Q] When will a proper Sat Nav app arrive? or am i missing them somewhere?

cant find a sat nav program like tom tom anywhere. i`d rather use my data connection for surfing the internet and not using the voiceless bing maps. does this mean i should keep hold of my touch tiamond 2 and its tom tom?
don't think there is anything out there yet.
Have you contacted tomtom and asked when they are going to release a wp7 version?
I can live with telenav (tmous) until bing nav is released in the first update.
Although Bing Nav will use data as well just like Google Maps nav does.

I'd imagine the 225 MB max package size for the WP7 marketplace might be a problem for offline navigation apps (unless the app downloads the maps separately).

you may want to petition the dev of Maverick (android) to make a pay-for app.
it's a very good OFFLINE gps app, which caches maps directly from (alphebetical order, not quality ) bing, google, mapnik, osma, others. the really nice feature is you can build your own maps from downloaded tiles, then dump them to the sdcard and have maverick use -those- tiles for your offline viewing.
caveats:
not a turn by turn app.
not a 'navigation' app.
wp7 is stupid about usb storage, so transfering files >2Gb will be a pita.
wp7 has no pre-installed navigation, so people are -not- buying the phone with this premise (no user base)
plusses:
caching (if you ever figure out the stupid sdcard issues)
it's already mature on android
the dev is stable
cheap
if / when a non-M$ application comes out, hopefully it won't be from tomtom or garmin. if you've used those in the past, you know just how bad they are on mobiles, without data. the best i've used is Google Navigation, as it caches the route once it's selected, and then all you need is a GPS signal, no data required. THIS, is a feature all phone apps should have that deal with mapping. Are you listening microsoft ? TOMTOM ? Garmin ?
Also, if/when an app is released, subscription based application is an instant FAIL. $49 apps are a FAIL. pay-for-each-region-of-maps are a FAIL. Hopefully the app makers are paying attention this time, for the wp7 users' sake.

I've used Tomtom and Navigon for years on my cell... I love them. Granted the development hasn't as great as a stand a lone unit but for having the convenience of only having to carry around ONE unit and not having a separate unit in the car for this I think they're pretty good. I use tomtom EVERY day for work going to do estimates etc.
So, subscription based is out, 50 dollar apps are out, pay per map is out.... how are these companies supposed to make money? It's one thing for google or MS to develop a free gps app for their OWN os, its another for tomtom or something to do it and just give it away for free. I cant see why they would do that. Not a very good buisness model is it
I have no doubt when they update Bing to have full on 3d Navigation like google nav on android that's what I'll be using as my main gps.

Thanks for the heads up. Any differences you noticed compared to "regular" version?
Save your money and buy something that's worth it. CoPilot is worst navigation system I have ever seen!
I bought the full European version for £29.99 instead of £60.
It does annoy me that the USA Version is only £2 for Standard and £6 for Premium!
Navigon is a sack of sh1t compared to this (IMHO).
Each to their own, personally I think it rocks and for the money you cannot complain!
I bought CoPilot v8 at the beginning of May, when I got my S2. It cost me just over £20.
ALK have confirmed there is no upgrade path and all they will provide existing users (along with everyone else) is this 7 day, 50% discount.
After having a quick look at what this new 'Premium' versions offers, I think I'll be saving my money and wait for v10.
A reviewer wrote:
Stick with V8. Glad this wasn’t an upgrade!! V9 seems to have forgotten what SATNAV is for. Suggested routes are ridiculous. Every route needs editing, not good when at the roadside and all you want is to get from A-B. No routing prefs Shortest, Quickest etc. Road prefs if not on neutral make things worse. No town\city location display. Often looses gps fix. Display on Wildfire has grey pixelated areas and chopped off icons. ‘Not fit for purpose’ in many areas. Needs to be fixed – quick or Refund please!

Maps for the region your purchased are free. E.g. I bought UK and Ireland version (those maps are free). I can additionally purchase maps for other regions (e.g. Western Europe).
Regarding the voice, screenshot attached.
Overall this version is great. The UI is epic compared to the last version.

That is a very fair review I would say.
As for the maps, that may be true, I am not sure, but I don't believe it is. I think the cost of the Copilot app includes the maps.
There are additonal 'bolt ons' available within v9.0 which cost extra. I have paid for Traffic (£9.99 per annum), I would have paid for Fuel Prices (4.99 per annum) but it is not available in the UK presently.
The best part for me is the upgraded registration process. In v8.0 it was a nightmare and if you wanted to change from one device to another, it could quite literally make your brain bleed. It is easy in v9.0.
Overall, I am very happy, I am just jealous that I do not live in the US where this is extremely cheap. The cost of maps must be less for Copilot over there I guess.
Someone told me that CoPilot do not integrate with Android Contact
This should mean that it isn't possible to invoke navigation from an Contact address ... is this a fact (or a joke)?
If you're talking about selecting a contact in Android's Contacts app & navigating to it via CoPilot, that doesn't seem to be an option -- instead of opening CoPilot, it takes you into Google Maps. It may be the case that Android doesn't provide the hooks to allow third-party apps to be called from within their Contacts app; Google wrote the OS, so they set the rules.
However, you can select your Android contacts from within CoPilot.

Android do provide the hooks to allow third-party apps to be called from within their Contacts app. IGO My Way is one confirmed example.
Is Copilot as good or reliable as tomtom? Tbh, I still find myself using my htc touch diamond for satnav since it has tomtom navigator on it. Honestly, all the other satnavs around are crap from what I've tried. They all have some fancy features or graphics which are nice or better in some way (like I use google satnav sometimes and it speaks actual road names which is cool, but no speed camera warnings) but overall, tomtom is the only one I trust and feel comfortable with and which holds my hand down every road. Can't wait till tomtom hits android.

Problems - just me?
Hello all
I'm having real problems with mine at the moment. It locks up constantly usually when a planning a route but often when navigating and sometimes it hangs the phone too.
Mine's a very standard installation, not rooted and the phone is stable otherwise.
It might just be me but if not I'd say it's a long way from being release worthy.

Nokia Drive vs Maps

I just came over to the WP7 after many years and ROMS with a WM6.5 using Sprint. Sprint navigation was excellent.
I used Nokia Drive today and was somewhat disappointed. Although it was very accurate, I needed to depend totally on the voice instructions. There was no overview of the route to give me a general feel as to what was going to happen next.
On the way home, I used maps and actually the navigation. I saw the directions all listed and felt a little more secure. I really only needed the first few directions to get me to a freeway. By looking at the overview and committing this to memory, I felt more confident and not so lost.
These are just my observations as each person will have his own comfort level.
FYI Nokia Maps can be used without a data connection if you download the maps. I do not believe the maps app has this feature.
The only reason I buy the Nokia Lumia 900 over HTC Titan II is their Nokia Collection apps that is so far more robust than HTC's. I've tried to use the Nokia Drive and it actually did a great job to offer me turn-by-turn navigation with no extra costs...
Drive is pretty decent
Nokia Drive is accurate and decent, but, the lack of lane assist and the constant recalculation and inaccuracy of the ETA are frustrating.
Maps is great for directions or if you're navigating for another driver, but, it's lacking for voice guided navigation while driving.
Garmin Street Pilot is very excellent, though expensive, despite not being able to preload an entire state map. It'll still have your route, at least, if you lose your data connection.
The no data feature is good for folks who don't have a data plan. I always enjoyed the free navigation software they provide. I first had it on my Nokia E72 and loved it. Now that it's on a bigger screen, its even better =)
I'm quite dissappointed by Drive. How do you get to Version 2 of a navigation app without adding the ability to save locations? The version that I have on my old N8 is far more functional including the ability to save locations and announce street names.
Amazingly, Bing maps has the ability to pronounce Street Names, can generate Turn by Turn Directions, but then won't read them to you as you drive, you have to tap the screen to get each prompt. Why get 80% of the way to a solution and then stop?
Combine this with the lack of any integration into the OS that would allow you to navigate to a contact's address or to search for a location in Bing and then navigate to it and you have a huge hole in functionality.
I'm sure this will get fixed in Tango and/or Drive 3.0 but I'm pretty sure my 30 day return window will be over before then and I suspect my Lumia will be available soon as a refurb.
I love the OS, and have used it before, but I expected more of an upgrade from my old Samsung Focus. The other OS's are moving forward so quickly and I'm afraid Windows Phone will be left behind.
I found this extremely annoying:
When you're in Nokia Map, there is no way to get turn-by-turn driving directions within that app or at least have it to automatically switch to Nokia Drive app.
I used Nokia Map and looked for an address to get directions from my current place but then unlike Google Maps on Android, I had no option to get turn-by-turn driving directions. I had to exit Nokia Map and do everything all over again in Nokia Drive! This is not going to work for me.

Go to Market Place > Nokia Collection > Nokia Drive
Or you can find the others there.
Hi,
I have been an iPhone user for since the first one and have had the Navigon app since it became available. I have had an HD7 on TMo for over a year and was glad to see Navigon added to the MarketPlace.
I agree that the Nokia Drive app leaves a bit to be desired when compared to full fledged apps that you pay alot for. Given that Nokia Drive is free, and has the ability to be customized with voices, etc., I give it a solid option for someone looking for a free GPS app with pared down features.
Manually downloading maps that you need saves space, but you can only do that via WiFi (same for Navigon). I didn't have issues with ETA times, as others have posted about, and the built in POI/Search functions were accurate.
I have both Nokia Drive and Navigon on my new Lumia 900. The Navigon Lane Assist, speed and camera alerts, Live traffic, and ability to use Google search for local POIs are nice features. Again you pay for this, but it was worth it for me.

So far, HTC Locations app on my HTC Titan is far better than Nokia Drive on my Lumia 900. Nokia Drive feels like the typical Nav apps I used in Windows Mobile days.
I'm very dissapointed by the Nokia collection apps, both quality and quantity. So far, there is no DLNA apps (I know it is still in Beta), no MMS setup app (for use with other networks).

Yeah I wasn't sure if I was missing something. What I do is look up all my destinations at home. I pull up each destination and press "START." I then press Stop navigation. Now go into "Set destination." Next go into "Last destinations." Your destinations should be in there. Kind of clunky but it works.

You can search for an address within Nokia Drive. You can search by address or name of business. Bing and outlook integration would be great but I've done okay with the integrated search function within Nokia Drive. I haven't given it a real thorough work out though so it may fail me. Only time will tell.

Is that a bad thing? What were you expecting? I pull up the app. Search for an address. Press Start navigation and it accurately tells me how to get where I'm going. I can download a map for the entire US at one go or I can just download maps one state at a time. I use no data while on the road. All of this is free on a free phone. I don't care about the data but if I go somewhere rural or something knocks out the cell signal I don't want to be up a creek 100 miles from home. If someone wants me to pay they are going to have to wow me.

Assuming you've purchased Aura, just log into the sygic support site and request your activation code be reset. This normally happens within 48h, you can then re-enter the code and activate on your new handset.
Cost of co-pilot and sygic is similar at the minute £33 for copilot and £40 for sygic, both are good but I prefer copilot - used the old version while travelling around Europe and had zero problems with it or its routing. Sygics routing seems to be idiosyncratic at times but their customer support is exemplary.
For me the best gps program is Ndrive 11

thanks
I haven't really found an app that has given me complete satisfaction. I like Google Navigation but sometimes I cannot get is running when network is weak or temporarily unavailable.
Aura Sygic: The best UI. I like the options. But the routing is what I did not like. More than half the time, it gave me some awkward routes when there were more convenient routes were still available. That was a real deal breaker for me. And thankfully, Sygic offers a trial period unlike Co-Pilot and Ndrive which you get stuck with after Google's 15 minute refund windows closes.
Co-Pilot: I like the fact that it displays which side of the road my destination is when I reach there (not always accurate though, but useful for my part time job as a pizza delivery driver). However, it sometimes tells me to enter a one way street from the wrong direction. I don't like Pico TTS Engine that it uses for text to speech voice direction so I used the normal voice guidance which was less mechanical than Pico although it did not speak street names. I wish it supported SVOX.
Ndrive 11: Bought it just a couple of days ago. I don't like the UI (maps) as much as Aura or even Co-Pilot. The 3D view looks more or less like 2D. But it's routing appears to be the better than the other apps I mentioned above. I wish it clearly indicated which side of the street the destination was upon arrival. It does indicate on the map itself with an icon but it is not so easy to make out. And there no TTS voice available for turn by turn voice guidance. I wish these third party apps spoke out street names like Google Navigation.
So, I'd be happy if there was an app that had maps like Aura, features like Co-Pilot, accurate routing like Ndrive and superior TTS voice guidance like Google Navigation.
I use waze. It's good
Sygic works perfect on my One X, use correct xml-file and 2010 k* for not going to demo mode.
I would say Navigon is good.

doesn't matter, newer version works like a charm.
I've been using Navfree from the PlayMarket, and it works very well for a free navigationapp.
I'm looking for a navigation app as well for my HOX. Google Navigation isn't even enabled in my region (Malaysia), and I've used Garmin on my previous phone before and am very used to Garmin. What's the closest to Garmin that is available on Android and has Malaysian maps?
One thing that I really REALLY don't like about the Navigation app is that it doesn't tell you whether to keep on the left or right lane when there is a small split in the road unlike Garmin.
XDA does not condone the use of warez, so please don't ask for it.
Thread cleaned.
