Hello, XDA-Experts!
I encounter a problem with my desire HD and looking for any help I can get.
Since about one week my Phone is not recognized when connected to a PC.
I am using the phone since December 2010 and it works well since then. It's S-Off and Radio S-Off. In the moment, I am using CoreDroid 4.9 with Radio 26.06.04.06_M. Before I was using the ARHD ROM for some time.
The problem occurs on 3 different PC's with 3 different operating systems (Server 2003, Win 7 Ultimate 64-Bit, Win XP Pro SP3, all of them used to recognize the phone before). Windows never recognizes the phone now, android (in most cases) recognizes the connection an asks for the connection mode. The phone is ALWAYS charging over USB.
What I tried so far, after searching in different forums and via Google:
- Rebooting the phone
- Removing the phone's battery
- Booted in fastboot - no USB connection
- Tried a different USB cable
- Changed the USB ports at pc (without hub, no other USB-devices connected)
- Flashing other ROM (tried CM and MIUI, with full wipe/factory reset)
- Checked the USB-connector in the phone with an electronic microscope - all contacts look fine
I am running out of ideas, the only thing I couldn't try, is another radio, because I don't know how to flash without pc. But I don't think, the problem is related to the radio...
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your device manager shows anything when you connect it to your pc?Debugging mode is enabled?
Device Manager shows nothing. Debugging Mode is enabled.
I went through a similar problem a while back - took ages to resolve it - in my case the problem was the usb cables I was using - I had tried a few - but its possible to get cables that only charge and dont communicate - eventually i got it fixed by using a new original cable.
Might not be this for you but it certainly helped me
No fix that I know of...
I had this problem...
I tried different computers, different SD cards, I could take the sd card out and put it in a usb holder and that would work fine, so it really wasn't the sd card. I tried different usb cables too.... nothing would work.
I spoke to my carrier (Orange) to see if they could sort out the problem, and they went through their 'script' of diagnostics and came to the conclusion that it was my computer drivers and there was nothing wrong with the phone!!!
I then rang HTC and after several phones calls later, they said that they would repair it, unfortunately that would have left me without a phone for 2 weeks, so I rang Orange again to demand that they replaced the phone! I told them that HTC had said it was a fault and they sent out a replacement Luckily I had not rooted it at this point, so it was easy for me to swap it.
The replacement phone came the next day, and like magic, worked fine when I connected it to my computer (the same one that apparently had faulty drivers!!)
So, I never found a fix for this, but managed to get a replacement! hopefully you will be able to sort something out...
Good luck
I had this problem once and it turned out to be kernel related, but I'm not sure if this would apply in your case since you've flashed a few ROMs and still have the issue. Still, might be worth trying one of Apache's Buzz kernels or LeeDrOiD's latest... if only to rule out another possibility.
does your PC recognize it if you mount the SD in recovery?
if not, it should be the cable
I had the same thing, I went crazy, and somebody told me to use another cable
and worked
Same happened to me.
Seems the phone crashed the USB controller or something on the PC.
A reboot of the PC fixed it for me (I dont see you mention that anywhere).
First of all, thanks a lot for all your replies!
As I said before, I tried 2 different cables, that both worked fine before. But after your replies I tried a third, new one - same result.
The card is recognized fine by windows when I put it in a USB-Card Adapter.
What I forgot to mention in my initial post, is, that I also formatted the card in my pc, put it back in the phone and started the phone new - same result.
I will try some other kernels now. B.t.w., has anyone a solution for flashing the radio without pc? Via terminal, or recovery? As this is one of the few things, that I couldn't try yet.
I'm 99% sure radio wont be a factor in this mate as they only deal with mobile connections, eg GSM/3G, Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS. If the problem is software and not hardware then I think it will be with the Android USB gadget driver, which is in the kernel. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
Can you mount as usb in CWM?
No, that doesn't work either.

1) Try reinstall HTC driver on your windows and try again.
2) If it failed, backup all your files on sd card via USB-Card Adapter. Then use SD Formatter 3.0 (google it) to format the sd card. Copy the backup files back to SD card and try mount the usb again.
HELP i got the same problem
I use the phone in the last 6 months; I have S-OFF, clockworks custom recovery and rooted stock HTC 2.2 Froyo. The only change I made last week is purchasing a desktop cradle "stand". I tested the stand several times the last week and I was able to access the SD card & the HTC sync modes successfully.
Now when I connect the phone using stand or any other USB cable including the original HTC; nothing happened on the computer! The USB manager activates and brings up the USB connection type menu. However, nothing recognized by PC.
I tried all things that you can expect (another PC, another cable, factory reset, new room, with/without cradle) nothing happened, even I connected the phone on a new PC it didn’t detect the new driver!
What to do now??
Hi,
Not sure if you have already, but you can try the new HTC sync version 3.0.5557 - It's actually for the HTC flyer tablet, but i installed it and it works perfectly for the DHD.
You might have a driver issue, but the new 3.0 sync comes with new windows drivers so maybe it's worth a shot.
I've checked the HTC Flyer support page but there's no link there for the 3.0 Synch ... I could only find a direct link, here below
http://www.htc.com/www/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=1097&news_id=923
Be sure to un-install the previous HTC sync first
Its not a driver issue, I tried the new sync. Not working. Nothing is working with USB only the charger.
I have a feeling that electrostatic damaged my USB. I remembered last week I touch the phone while charging and a one electrostatic click was strong.

hey I have same problem... :-/
what's the solution ?? plz tell me
same problem
please help
I've got a Desire HD (since Jan. 2011) witch i always sync using WiFI so i never need to use USB other then for charging my phone, i did install HTC Sync and it worked fine when i first got my phone but found it to be a program witch i don't need so when i reinstalled my PC i didn't install the HTC software and Drivers.
Last week i decided to root my phone using the "Advanced Ace Hack Kit" but was unable to get working because the phone didn't connect to my PC, after a lot of testing ( @work ) using 4 different PC's with Windows XP, 7, Ubunto Live and BackTrack 5 live, it seems that i just can't communicate with my phone via USB (Windows device-manager does not show the phone eighter), i also used 2 different USB cables and severals different USB ports on the mentioned PC's but to no avail.
This is what i've done so far...
Set option "USB Debugging" to ON
Set the phone's "Connect to PC to.." to "Charge Only" (also tried HTC Sync and Disk Drive mode)
Installed HTC drivers v3.0.0.007 from Ace Hack Kit on WinXP and Win7 PC's
Installed HTC drivers v3.0.0.008 from HTC.com on WinXP and Win7 PC's because v3.0.0.007 didn't work
Booted from Ubunto Live and BackTrack Live
Set the Phone back to factory defaults and tries the above again
Installed HTC Sync on WinXP and Win7 PC's
After all this the problem stayed the same, i'm just not able to get the phone to communicate to any PC, not via "HTC Sync", "Disk Drive" nor via "Advanced Ace Hack Kit - Charge Only"
Charging the phone works fine btw, i charge at home and at the office using a desktop cradle, the same ones mentioned in the article below
http:/ htcpedia.com/news/supreme-desktop-charging-docks-htc-desire-hd.html
So what do you guys think, is the USB port on my phone broken..?
try to flash again or other ROM.
yesterday i also face same problem, after format all and flash other ROM then ok already.
i also don't why this happen.
Are you using the cable that came with your phone? I bought a cable off ebay and it only charges, doesn't have the ability to send/receive data
yes, some cable is only for charge. Are you using the original one??
@christeohlg
i can't flash any other rom since i cant root my phone via USB.
@maatsby
yes, i am using the original HTC cable i also tried the original cable that came with the Desire Z that my wife uses but unfortunately no change.
I have seen this issue quite a few times and I think that it is ROM related.
It happened on a HTC Hero, a Samsung Galaxy Europa, and a LG GT540.
I too thought it might just be the cables but every single time, a wipe and new ROM brought USB functionality back.
Oké, i understand that some Rom's might have questionable USB performance or might disable USB because of a bug or something but my Desire HD still has the custom HTC v2.3.3 Rom on it, it has not jet been rooted nor has the Rom been replaced by any custom Rom.
So is the Rom would be the problem i would expect more people would have come foreword with this problem.
I too am having this problem, except I bought mine second hand. I am very quickly coming to the conclusion that some part of my phone usb port is broken.

I had the same problem but I was messing around with different kernels. Try flashing to a different kernel or reflash your rom. It worked for me!
I'm from the Evo 4G section of xda and just bought an Epic 4G from a friend to play around with. I've rooted and fully customized my Evo 4G and my uncle's Samsung Infuse. So I am not new to the rooting side of these phones. However, I just can't seem to get this to work no matter how hard I try.
Ok so I have done Google searches and sifted through the various "fixes" here on xda....I cannot, no matter what I do, get my epic 4g to be recognized on my Windows 7 64 bit.
I've downloaded and installed about 3 or 4 different USB driver files. I've gone through 2 different cables. I've uninstalled and even updated drivers via Windows. And I've installed and updated Kies. I bought the phone from a friend of mine who had done a full system restore before he gave it to me. So if there were any system issues they should be gone. When I plug in one of the cables the phone shows that the USB cable is connected and I have USB debugging on. But my computer shows "Uknown Device." Does anyone have any suggestions for me please?
I've included screenshots of what my computer shows me. Any help, or reference literature that I may have overlooked, that you guys can provide would be extremely helpful.
There's a few reasons this could be happening. You may want to try different USB ports on your computer or connecting through a USB hub. Also, make sure you're using the official Samsung drivers (you can search for them on XDA).
Otherwise, go to the dialer on the phone and punch in ##8778# and under USB make sure PDA is checked instead of modem. Hope that helps.
I too could never get win7x64 to work but had no problem on other pc running win7x86. I wasted hours trying. Uninstalled everything, removed all references in registry, used usbdevview, device manager, different usb ports, win update, and on and on and on. Gave up since I had other computer and it just worked 1st try. Please pm me if u find the solution. Would still like it to work on 64 bit. My thought is the 64 bit driver, but I hear others are working. :-O

Mine works fine on my 64bit Laptop. I had to update drivers once though since going to GB leak broke it. On my desktop it will only work if connected in the rear USB port.

I've used atleast 3 different computers with 64 bit windows 7, I never did anything special except for download the drivers from samsungs website...
I don't know what it is because I couldn't get the computer to recognize my phone on my uncle's laptop (which runs Vista 32). It kept giving me the same "Unknown Device" message when I went to look at the drivers.

Where it says unknown device double click on that then go to update driver then browse to location of unzipped samsung drivers.

Welcome to the Epic 4g xda section! It just so happens I was looking for Windows 7 64-bit drivers earlier today.
Here's where I found them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
Then scroll down to the section "2.3 – ROOTING" and you'll find the listed drivers there.

That post and those drivers are old...
Go here and get the drivers from Samsung:

AFAIK, that package should install the correct drivers for the OS.

I have literally the same problem, phone was reconized and connected fine when i was running xp 32 bit, installed windows 7 64 bit and nothing i do will work. Was your problem ever resolved?
All i can say is try extracting the drivers thru 7zip
then extract the files it gives you
then u should see like a folder and then copy and paste the
folder in the c: program files
and then go back to device manager and then actually manaually search for
drivers and that should work cuz it worked for me im using Windows 8
unfortunately that is one of the exact ways I tried to do it, thanks for the input tho. Just incase I over looked something searching for the driver manually, what sub category should my phone be under in device manager? thx
For those having trouble getting the drivers installed in Win7(x64/x86).
A workaround could be to use WUBI (Ubuntu's windows based installer that adds an option to boot to Ubuntu, while allowing it [Ubuntu] to be uninstalled from windows like a "normal" program).
Install WUBI, boot to Ubuntu, problem solved!
If the point of installing the drivers it to get Odin working...
The WUBI workaround would still work, you would just replace Odin with Heimdall (which is 100x better/more stable than Odin anyway).
I realise this is a lot to do for resolving a driver install problem, but... Heimdall pwns Odin anyway.

and if your in download mode when you hook your phone up
it will show up under modem it wil not show until you connect your phone
Ok I had to do the following inorder for it to work on my windows 7 x64 bit
I download the samsung epic 4g driver samsung_mobile_driver_v1.3.800.0.msi
I then used 7zip to extract the file
I then used the msi file and installed it
I then used 7 zip and extracted the samsung_mobile_driver_v1.3.800.0.msi file to a directory
I then DISABLE ALL INTERNET ACCESS ON THE LAPTOP BY TURNING OFF WIFI AND OR PULLING THE LAN CABLE OUT THE PC.
I then plug the phone into the pc usb slot
let the pc find the drivers
if it does not find them point to the extracted directory you did above and it will be good.
now do ##8778# and place the bottom into pda and if it cant find drivers point it to the extracted directory.
now turn phone off and go into download mode 1 key and power button and let windows find the drivers

Oh... my... god. I spent hours today trying to figure out how to get this phone I picked up to show me its sd card as a drive. Everyone on the internet seemed to be saying it was the lack of the right drivers, though they all disagreed on what the right drivers were. I tried so many different drivers, no luck.
That above, that I quoted: all it took. Why would it possibly be misconfigured out of the box in such a weird, impossible-to-locate way? Jeez.
(Anyway, I know I'm bumping a super old thread with this first post, but I felt compelled not just to thank this person for restoring my sanity, but also to bump up this thread's relevance for future googlers going as crazy as I was going.)
Hey guys!
I got my hands on an HTC Desire Z just yesterday and I keep trying to figure out how to connect it to my PC, since it won't pop-up in neither Windws7, Windows8 nor Ubuntu 12.04.
I have tried google drivers, HTC Sync, ADB won't recognize the device. I tried on a freshly installed windows7 - the only device that actually gets installed in Device Manager is "Quallcomm Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)" - meaning... ?!?!?! What?!? I can't make anything out of this.
The device is S-OFF-ed here is what HBOOT says:
VISION PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.84.2000 (PC1011000)
MICROP-0425
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot

OS Ver.-1.34.405.5

CID-111111111111
eMMC-Sandisk 2223MB 4554751sectors
It has installed CWM recovery. mounting the USB storage from CWM however doesn't work :S
So I can flash a ROM through it, but even a freshly installed ROM wouldn't connect via USB when booted, so I have to run an FTP app to exchange files between my phone and my PC. USB debugging doesn't make any difference.
Besides, I think my phone not being visible in HBOOT by ADB is a big-enough problem by itself.
Does any1 have any suggestions? I tried searching (both by hand and using the forum search engine), but didn't see any1 with a problem similar to mine.
P.S. The phone does charge via the USB cable(tried the original one AND 3 others) when connected to the computer.
I have another Android phone that ADB sees as a valid device etc. ... so I am kinda thinking it maybe even a hardware issue?
There's been some development
I am now pretty sure it's a software issue. Connecting the device to an older PC running Windows XP works like a charm. Sadly anything that's Core i -based doesn't seem to recognize the device.
Could anyone pull his HBOOT, radio, RCdata, etc. and give it to me so I could try flashing something, that is surely known to be working software?
May have a bad pin in USB port, but if any driver at all tries to install then I'm thinking hardware is okay
Go to any guide explaining how to root and there should be links to the proper drivers.
You may need to uninstall any driver that is associated to your phone and then manually choose what driver you need.

Hmmm.... the correct DRIVERS don't seem to be working on Win8.
Will try on windows7 in a while and write back with results. BTW is there a particular device I should be looking for in the Windows' "Device Manager" ?
Windows 8 and 8.1 have issues, a few Google searchs should show you how to do it. If you can't find what driver in device manager to change there is a free windows program called USB driver search (something like that) which tells you all drivers on PC.
If you go to xda university (the xda thread for it) I have a more comprehensive fastboot guide there with directions for Linux install too
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I think (and correct me if I'm wrong) that it's really not a driver issue.
The Drivers I re-linked above had no success on Windows7
I don't get unrecognized device connected to my PC. I don't get any devices connected to my PC (after I uninstalled the Quallcomm Atheros... mentioned before).
Now - again - correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the phone USB driver inside the Radio? if yes - maybe a wrong radio is flashed? Given the fact that I have a working CWM - is it possible to get a fix through it?
@ demkantor
I will do some reading on the subject you said and then test things out tomorrow morning after a clean neat Win7 installation on my PC. I'll post back results.
Ok, so - here are the results:
I re-installed my Windows OS on my PC, installed all the MoBo drivers - a clean slate.
I then installed the HTC Drivers (mentioned above), HTC Sync, platform-tools.
Connected the phone - computer made the tingling sound of a connected device, but in the device manager - nothing.
Is there a way to flash the bootloader/radio/anything, aside from a new ROM through CWM? That's all I got now :S
Flashing firmware should be done in fastboot, if your USB port is broken you can make a flashable zip and flash in recovery but it is less safe. A slightly better option is creating a pc10img.zip
What do you need to flash right now?

Well I tried flashing different radio through pc10img.zip file, but it had no effect. Windows still plays the tingling sound and no device is recognized.
I'm seeing this HBoot version - PC101000
I noted mine is a tad different - PC1011000, although my HBoot is 0.84.2000 (Which If I understand correctly is the engineering one and should be working properly). Should I be concerned about the number difference and can I flash HBoot through a PC10IMG.zip file?
P.S. I really know I should be flashing through fastboot - the point is - I can't get my DZ connected
P.P.S. Would you advise me to revert to stock (BL, Recovery, Radio, ROM) through PC10IMG.zip (if possible) ?

Flashed the DZ_PC10IMG.zip file you posted - sadly there was no effect on the USB connection. I think I'm pretty convinced it's a hardware issue. At this point I think the soldering iron would be my only salvation.
Thank you very much for your time and knowledge!
Sorry for the bump-up, but I have some recent information on the matter - in the first post.
That's very strange, but again it must be a driver issue I would assume. I've had issues before with some PCs and had to use a program called USBDeview to locate all drivers associated with said phone and then force windows to install the proper ones.
All that firmware you requested can be found in the link I sent earlier in the 30th post
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
With all due respect I still think it's the phone's software issue. I tried installing Windows7 from the same DVD on both computers. Both PCs run fine, but one of them doesn't recognize the phone. Only difference is the hardware platform.
I tried running linux and OSX (Hackintosh) on the PC that doesn't recognize the phone - no effect on any of the OSes.
PC that recognizes the phone under both WindowsXP and Windows7 has no trouble recognizing it when running live linux (Ubuntu distro)
One other strange thing that I noticed is when I connect the phone to my car charger it asks me whether to mount the SD card or not... I'm no expert but I'm guessing that shouldn't be happening.
That is why I'm hoping that someone could pull their HBOOT, radio, rcdata, recovery, etc... and post them here so I can try flashing a known-to-be-working software and see if it helps.
P.S. (note that the phone doesn't recognize it's plugged into a PC either - it's just charging as if it was plugged into a charger)
One other thing. When I plug the phone in the PC that's not working and I reboot the phone it offers me to mount the SD card and share it with the PC, but the PC won't see there's a USB storage device. It only sees the Atheros gigabit adapter mentioned in my first post. OS clearly doesn't matter.
Again all the firmware you requested in that link on the 30th post, you can unzip it and flash each image on its own if you want, same firmware as on both my g2s and neither have issues
If you're for sure its not a driver issue than its either the USB cable or port (is the new computer USB 3.0?) I feel the phones firmware is unlikely the cause but feel free to test.
But I will say its strange that when plugged into car charger it asks for SD mount, makes me go back to my original thought of a pin on the phones USB port is bad and certain cables trigger effects not wanted

Well I think I can rule the pin on the phone USB port out, since it's working fine with more than one computer.... sadly it's just not working with the computer I need it to work :S
I'm re-flashing the PC10IMG you posted previously (as it appears I flashed something else last time o.0 )
I'll post results and see if I can order a usb port replacement for my DZ unit.
Once again - Thank you for your time and patience with me!
Cheers
I've been trying to play with some of the ROM's of Pokemon games recently and i've been using the Pokemon ROM editor to edit the games ROM's. This was before i rooted my nexus 7. Be aware that I haven't flashed any other ROM's or played with any kernels or device mechanics yet and the device was still connecting as MTP before I had rooted and for a while after i had rooted. I can connect it as PTP, but that's not useful when you need to take the whole .nds file for a game off your device. I'm not quite sure what's causing it, but I can tell you what i've already tried so far.
I've reinstalled the ADB drivers and every single part of my Nexus 7 from both PC's that I plugged it into, then enabled MTP and reconnected them, but Windows gives me a driver not found error and so ends the driver solution. I've connected it to more than one PC, one of which had not had the device connected to it ever before, yet it still it didn't appear. (Both PCs are running windows 7), so that means it's either Windows 7 doesn't like Google and wants to screw them by not showing their devices (which is unlikely) or the nexus 7 is just being derpy (which is likely). I've tried different cables, but i assume the cable is alright seeing as it can charge and connect as PTP.
I'm not really sure where else to go from here and i kinda need to edit that ROM soon as my Electabuzz needs to evolve and I need to change his evolution conditions so he evolves at level 56 instead of by trade. There's a random piece of info for you. Also, if i get any solutions that require software downloads, please link to the software or files. I'm pretty new to android tinkering and I don't know all of the terms yet.
EDIT: I don't understand this anymore. At first, PTP was working, now i tried it on a laptop, It didn't work, then i tried it on the PC again and now both PTP and MTP are suddenly working again...
Why does android continue to just fix itself automatically? This is the third time!

Sounds to me like you have a driver or cable/usb port issue. One of these two links might be useful. Installing a USB driver and [FIX] MTP with USB debugging. Sometimes you might need to go into the device manager and uninstall the driver AND driver software then do a fresh install of the driver. You might want to do a reboot of the computer after uninstalling the driver. I've been lucky and never had problems but my brother had problems and we basically just had to uninstall and reinstall the driver.

To add to what was said above you will need to disables driver security enforcement in order to install the drivers. This will put your computer in test mode and allow you to install non signed drivers. You will also need to manually install the drivers in device manager. I assume you already tried settings > storage > click three dots in the upper right hand side of the screen > click USB connection > select MTP.

Absolutely right! I also forgot to mention that I have my Windows 7 desktop and laptop both set to Not automatically install drivers which I think makes it easier, at least for me.
You're all wrong! MTP is one big witchery!! It has a mind of its own! It's going to work when you don't need and expect it! It's going to fail when you need and expect it! MTP comes from Microsoft, the house of dark witchcraft and wizardry that gave birth to ugly and sad things like Kin and its misscarried brother Kin 2, Windows Vista and a cursed, evil, dark and lonely soul called Zune! The legend and tales of Gates tell that on Judgement Day, Zune will enslave his very own strain just to take revenge on humanity! Fear the day of revenge! Fear the day of Zune!...
