[Q] Recovery for a broken "volume up" button - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My volume up button is broken on my sister's phone so and I was wondering if there was a touch recovery for flashing new ROMs on her phone. Is there anything out there like that for the EVO?

Use smelkus mod recovery 4.3
Best one out there. Use the bottom buttons of the phone to navigate thru it

I believe the Team Win Recovery Project has touch screen support

[Q]Clockwordmod Issues?

Currently I am reverting a T-Mobile G2 back to stock. It has S-OFF and a custom rom. I know I must first flash a stock rom.
ClockwordMod Recovery 3.0.2.4 is not working for me. My phone can go into recovery, but whenever I select a broad menu option (install .zip from SD Card) options do not come up, but a black screen with a vibrant clockwork mod logo does/
I have tried flashing the ROM in ROM Manager but when I do that the phone just goes tottaly black, and an image goes across the screen at an extremely rapid pace. I imagine this is Clockwork failing.
Anyhow, how do i fix this? Any help is appreciated!
what mod r u runnin?

Recovery issues with both RA and CWM

EDIT! Nevermind, Figured it out!! thanks
I rooted my DINC with Unrevoked. Flashed RA recovery, but when booted into the RA recovery screen, I get a picture of a red triangle and !. Cannot select anything with volume up/down. Switched to Clockwork recovery, able to select the options, but it doesnt do anything. any ideas?
Are you using the optical joystick to select the options?

i used the volume rocker. on clockwork recovery, i can scroll up/down with the volume rocker. on RA recovery, i cant select anything.
oh dummy me!! i have to use the joystick instead. i'm an evo user so i was used to using the volume rocker.
Glad you got it sorted. Don't feel bad, I've seen quite a few people that have done the same thing.

Both are awesome, but I like CWM more
I've used both and both are great.
I personally find that CWM (ClockworkMod) is a little more straightforward and has a cleaner look to it. CWM now has touch, albeit it's not as feature or interface rich as 4ext's touch interface.
I should point out, however, that using CWM with some ROM's, I was unable to make selections when the ROM gives you options during flashing. For example, when I was flashing a rom that gave the option of installing the OC daemon, CWM didn't give me the option, it just said installation (of the OC daemon) cancelled, whereas 4ext said yes or no, and I was able to choose.
I use ROM Manager (+ premium) from the market to flash back to clockwork mod when I've had 4ext installed, and use 4ext Recovery Control to flash 4ext back.
I would post the links but xda says I can't yet Not new to android or xda by any means, but new to posting
Hope this helps
The recovery is called 4EXT, and that's what you should refer to it, as to avoid any sort of misunderstanding with the "ext4" filesystem.
With that said, 4EXT Touch is the best you can get. It has a lot of bugs fixed over from CWM. It is also fully compatible with ROM Manager.
Link to the 4EXT site: http://4ext.net/
4ext touch is what I prefer. I started with cwm and have mad love for it, but after one of the updates is was working awkward for me and I tried 4ext and never looked back.
I might add cwm is fixed now, and works flawlessly.

They both flash roms fine. So to me, eh who cares? I mean no offense to the respective devs, but I compare it to who makes a better key to my car? Who cares as long as it works. Imho.
P.s. I know some people like fancy keyless entry and keyless start and panic mode.... so for them it makes a difference.

CWM touch crash?

Alright, so I've downloaded CWM touch version 5.8.1.3 on my Galaxy s2 (SGH-T989). I've flashed with Odin v 1.3 as well ( for complete list of steps, you can search for the download process by searching CWM Touch 5.8.1.3 on the main threads).
The "touch" aspect works like a charm, although there are some annoyances. In this touch version, there is no "on screen" back option. The only way to go back is to use the capacitive button on the device. However whenever I use this button, the screen freezes, and then goes black. The end result is the screen coming back on to the start screen of the recovery. It does the same thing as well whenever i use the old methods of input (volume up, volume down, and power)
If anyone has any ideas for this please, feel free. This is more of a nuisance than a problem, so please do take your time. I look forward to any replies.

Why are you on such an old version of CWM? Try a new version in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1893464
Thank you so much! I had to completely erase the touch recovery that I was using, because it had a problem where you could not flash anything else from the SD card. So I had to reflash ClockworkMod recovery (non touch) so I could flash the touch on top of it. Thank you so much for your help.

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery: Which to get?

Hey
I have to flash a recovery but which ClockworkMod Recovery should I get? The latest released for my device? The latest build made for my device? Touch or nontouch?
Niether, try out 4ext recovery... And you have touch screen why not also have a touch recovery

Why should I use 4ext Recovery over ClockWork Recovery? I don't mind but I would like to know the advantages (from your point of view)
Both have touch but 4ext is more intuatuive, all wipes are together and the lay out make more sense. You can customize it by adding many different skins. You can easily change partitions to be formatted to 4ext and go into info to check easily. Backups seem faster and get named not just dated. If you decided to use the app it is also nicer than clockworks app. There are many other perks but if you dont like it, well it takes seconds to change recoveries via fastboot, so why not flash one, see what you think, then flash the other and see what you like better

Once again I've gotta agree with demkantor. I always used CWM Recovery since the G1 and then a few weeks back decided to give 4ext a go... The app was a bit daunting at first, I thought hell why are they so many options just for the recovery, but you don't have to configure everything to a tee. I flashed and rebooted, and never looked back. The big buttons, interface, logical menus, it's just fantastic. Has some really useful options like excluding cache + dalvik from nandroids, and also I love the option to wipe everything bar the fat32 petition, it's so much easier if I'm doing a fresh install.
Also the Vision is officially still supported, I don't think you can even get CWM 6. I tried CWM touch 5.8 (or something like that) and it was horrible.
Just try 4EXT, you won't regret it. Just go to the website, download apk, install apk, choose release candidate, flashes for you, reboot to recovery and smile. Easy as that.
