[Q] Bricked w Download Working Need Help - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Tried to install CM on wife's Epic. Mine Works
Failed and could not recover
Attempted to return to stock using instructions from here
Tried every suggestion from multiple posts
Reloaded every file, rebooted numerous times, etc.
The results are identical...phone goes into download mode, Odin is ready, connection made, then Odin locks up. Have waited various lengths of time up to 30 minutes. It is just locked up. See screenshot.
Am I missing something? Is there an even more basic way to get response from my phone? Or should I just go to Sprint?

Many thanks for your help and trying everything recommended. Unfortunately it still hangs at "SET PIT FILE" in each iteration says not to disconnect and then no change.

Ok, try it without the PIT file this time. If it still doesn't work I will get you an EC05 tar to try.

Tried that; also taz sent clean pit and stock FS09. Have run these and EC05 tar with same results...without PIT kicks it out after boot.bin "write failed" With PIT hangs after saying do not shut down.
It seems like if phone will go into download mode there has to be a way.

TY...tried these in multiple configurations with similar results. With PIT freezes after warning not to shut down; without PIT fails after boot.bin. I know there is something I should know about this but can't figure it out.

I have seen people with the same problem that have tried different cables. They got a new heavy duty Blackberry cable after trying 3 other cables and it worked.

Best advice heavy duty blackberry cable. I have one that never gets disconnected from my pc. Has never failed me.

[Q] ODIN freezes at factory.fs

Hello all,
This is my first post to XDA and I'm having some serious issues. I have searched eveywhere to try and find an answer but with no luck. I was trying to install chris41 odin efo2plus rom/kernel, and odin froze at modem.bin. I didn't know what to do. I unplugged the usb cable, pulled the battery and tried again. However, this time it froze at factory.fs being installed. I am using the new ODIN (1.82). I have tried running as admin, running in xp sp2 compatibility mode with admin, I've changed USB ports, and even changed USB cables, although I've never had a problem with ODIN and the Palm Pre cable that I've been using. I'm stuck. My phone won't boot, and I can't get it to ODIN anything. Even tried to ODIN DI18 stock, and still freezes at factory.fs. I was on Bonsai with EXT4, and chris41's rom is RFS. Don't know if that has anything to do with it? I am completely confused. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Just keep trying bro... if it worked before it'll work again Odin is just fussy...

Try running it without the battery in the phone. Open Odin plug phone in without battery and then go into download mode. Put your files in appropriate place and run Odin with only auto reboot checked. I have three epics and one of them will actually not work at all in Odin unless I have the battery out. Worth a try.

Ok, well, lets start at where the files are supposed to go. Every rom I've ODIN'd before, I just put the tar in the phone section. Never put a pit or anything else with it. Is this correct? Second, usually when I ODIN a rom, it comes up with a little progress bar on the phone showing how far along the process is. I've tried now about 20 times after the first ODIN, and I haven't gotten a progress bar yet. Should I be worried about that?

If you don't wanna use odin then I recommend odin'ing back to ec05 and root get cwm3.1.0.1 and flashing the ef02 zip that we recently got....

After following qbking's video and putting the tar in pda instead of phone, and putting the pit in, it now fails even earlier in the process. The status bar comes up on my phone, but as soon as it goes to write cache.fs, it fails. ODIN either comes up and says FAIL in the red box, or ODIN completely crashes. And, same thing as before, I've tried diff USB, rebooted computer, in xp mode, with admin, without admin. I'm starting to think my phone is a brick.

HAHA it says dont use it in video in annotations i mean come on already as well as in noobs thread its for debugging purposes and will eat your battery alive.
Please read things this is why people have issues and wonder why and then complain its so simple to read by using your eyes
Not being angry but just trying to point out that, this is why noobs either brick or get terrible results.
I got it. I don't know why, but for some reason I had to have Re-Partition, Auto-Reboot, and F. Reset Time all checked, as opposed to only Auto-Reboot. I'm now on EC05. Thanks all for your input. I really do appreciate it.
it may be your usb cable. Are you using the factory samsung cable? if so that was the reason why most of my odin's were failing. Try a generic usb cable from monoprice or something and it may help you the same way it helped me!
Edit: forget it

EVEN IN VIDEO it says do not flash.

Dont call someone a troll if you don't wanna read 100%
Im simply trying to explain and help you out. Several people told you don't flash the debug kernel were all just trying to help each other out.
One more thought!
I realize this thread is long dead but i found it using google looking for a solution to this exact issue, so i will add some input from my own personal experience.
Make sure you are using a fully charged battery. Also if you have multiple batteries try swapping between them. I have 2 counterfeit and one authentic battery, using the counterfeits causes problems in odin for me.
Also you may need to repartition if you are coming from a newer rom that is not BML

TrevE.. Bricked my phone!

TrevE you do great work.. and yea i know that this is my own fault for flashing and im not blaming you... BUT i installed (and bought the pro version) your "logging test app v7" and ran the ICQ remove... rebooted my phone like it said to and now its a paper weight... I gets stuck at the "Samsung screen". I tried putting it into "download mode" and odin back to stock and nothing. It goes into the download mode screen but my PC will not pick it up at all. Yes i have the right drivers (I am not a complete noob). I tried it with odin3 v1.85 and v1.61.
Any advice on how to fix it? Any of you guys know if sprint will be able to tell it was rooted when I take it in for a replacement (I have protection).

persistence pays off. after trying to get my phone into CWM about 50 times it finaly worked! flashing a new rom now... I will not be reloading the app.. but im not going to get a refund either.. keep the buck, you do great things! But if you figure out why this app does not like the epic 4g let me know.
Did you use this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1247108
TrevE develops for HTC devices as far as I'm aware.
If you are looking for the original mod for CIQ removal by k0nane, then go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340083
Try removing the battery for a bit before going into download mode. Try both with wall/usb cable connected and/or sd card removed.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359647
First off, if you don't blame Trev you should change the title...kind of rude. CIQ removal is not the same for all phones. You should have read more. Now to restore your phone follow this thread and if Odin isn't recognizing it no matter what then go to post 2 on using Heimdall to restore your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
I have had many of issues with odin, from not picking up to my screen turning random colors during odin flash.
You wouldn't by chabce have windows 7 64bit because its a pain with that os for some reason.
I would suggest uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them and it should run through the steps to rehook the drivers for odin, does for me everytime I flash with odin I have to reinstall drivers

Of coerce i dont balm treve... Thats the risk we take when we start to mess with our phones! But his app did crash it!! I sent him a PM so hopefully he will figure it out.. He does amazing this for Android, i have nothing but respect for him! If he tells me he has a problem with my title ill change it..
The first thing i did was take out the SD card but thanks for the heads up.
Odin has never once given me any problems and it now picks up my phone fine.
Thanks for the battery advice! I was only taking out for a minute or so, Ill try it for longer if i have any more troubles.
The phone is working great now.. just had to try to get into CWM about 50 times.
So say you don't blame TrevE yet your title says you do.
Pull the battery leave it out for a say or so and try again.

I dont blame treve or his app really... as a matter of fact i took full responsibility for it.
And yes i did brick my phone because im i moron that used the wrong app... but i am still finding all this great.

[Q] Possible brick? Any ideas?

Hey guys, I think I screwed up here and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem:
Basically, I had a rooted E4G Touch with a custom ROM installed. I went to install ANOTHER custom ROM THROUGH ODIN, as this previous ROM (I believe it was a Calkulin variant) did NOT have CWM recovery. During the ODIN process, something went wrong, and my computer/ODIN...basically, everything froze up while doing the MODEM portion. NOW I can't do anything.
- CWM was able to install on the thing...but it does not recognize my external SD card now. Every time I try to mount it, I get a "Error mounting /emmc".
- I'm still able to get into download mode on the phone, however the phone is not recognized on any computer I've tried. I've attempted multiple computers/USB cords and nothing picks it up.
I'm running out of ideas here. I picked up a USB jig that should be here soon, so I'm going to try that and reset the counter....which leads me to my next question: If I use that, can I take the thing back to Sprint and get a replacement? I have the insurance plan and everything, so if they won't take it back because of the custom software I guess I could always smash it or something...
Any help would be appreciated!

The ROM you flashed through ODIN was for this phone, right?
What custom ROM are you referring to that was available through ODIN?
assuming you flashed the right ROM, start with the basics..if you can get into download mode then try a simple reboot of your computer. Sometimes Odin won't recognize after it has been run

The only odin component involved with flashing CM9 is flashing a gb kernel with a CWM recovery. I haven't seen a cm9 tar, this is why I'm confused. Finding out exactly what you flashed will help in understanding what the problem is.
To flash cm9 you need to odin a gb cwm kernel and then boot to recovery and install cm9. However, that's not a tar, its an update.zip.

Yeah it was definitely a tar.md5 file, which leads me to believe I was incredibly dumb and possibly flashed a ROM for a different model phone. I'm having difficulty finding the post now which is very strange. This could be one of those moments where I take a good hard look in the mirror and figure out just what the heck I was thinking.
I'll keep looking for what exactly I did wrong, but in the mean time is there anything else I could attempt or look for short of attempting that USB jig and making a trip to Sprint? I'm feeling like a huge idiot right now. I've done this how many times now and when I finally make a mistake, it turns out to be huge.

Well ultimately you can try uninstalling / reinstalling drivers. But you say this issue exists across multiple pcs so that likely isn't it.
You can try another cable and see if you have any success with that.
Other then that, it kinda really depends what is in that tar you flashed. Once you find it, post the link, and that will help troubleshoot your issue.

Negative, I started right at the "Using the noob-proof ODIN method:". It said noob-proof and I decided that would be the easiest. It turns out it is very easy...if you're flashing to the correct phone Plus, I'd used ODIN before and felt comfortable with it.

I just downloaded the tar to have a look at whats included.
After flashing this you'll have a bootloader for the intl. sgs2. This is a problem many ran into when original SGS2 leaked tars started surfacing as well.
JTAG might be able to fix it, I'm not sure whether people with this issue were successful or not with JTAG repair as the intl gs2 flashing boat seems to have sailed now. However, a jig will likely do nothing, unfortunately.

Ok thank you for your help on this. You don't think a jig will reset the counter or anything so that I can take it back to Sprint? If not, I'm not above "dropping" it on the ground and using the insurance I have on it for a replacement.

I don't foresee it working only because your phone isn't recognized by your pc and the problem doesnt lie on the pc side.
The problem is instead with the port on the phone which leads me to believe it won't recognize a jig either.
A jtag if successful will leave you with more money in your pocket and a non-returb. Something to consider if you've got a backup phone you can use for a few days.

I don't see sprint replacing it with cm9 On it .... And u will need mobile Odin to get back to stock but with it not mounting the Emmc probably can't do that .... That is your hope to get back to stock using mobile Odin someway .... Triangle away app will reset Odin count but with no radio you need to get apps to do it and no sd from what u said ...maybe tell insurance u lost it and get it replaced
Jtag should work also since there is no emmc failure like the blue light of death bricks ...

[Q] Sprint Galaxy S III Rooted/Installed ROM... Now won't power on. Help!

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for a little help today.
I rooted my new Sprint Galaxy S III using Odin3-v3.04, and CWM_SuperUser_v3.0.7. Afterwards I rebooted and all was good.
I then downloaded I9300_Omega_v6.0_XXALF6 ROM and loaded on my phone and rebooted into recovery to install the ROM. I went through the install process, selected remove bloatware and installed. When finished I checked the reboot phone and clicked finish. The phone turned off and didn't ever turn back on.
I have pulled the battery and tried to power on using recovery, download mode and just power but nothing works.
Anyone have any idea what I can do?
Thank you for your time and help.

development area has a thread for that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727171
ONLY use ROMs that you'll find here in these threads not the I9300; that s a different phone from ours.
Thanks I'll check there.
Honestly I was waiting for this to happen gid luck restoring it phone

New phone on the way!
I was able to get a replacement sent from Sprint. Had to go to a corporate store and have a tech look at the phone and they agreed it was toast...
Luckily they didn't know it was due to my failed attempt to load an unsupported ROM.
Lesson learned... new phone should be in by the end of the week.
I'll be waiting for a supported ROM this time.

Oh man tell me about it, I almost stupidly went on to the CM9 nightlies and downloaded the I9300 version before I thought to myself, "well wait a minute, that's not my model number!"
Duh, shoulda had a V8.
I didnt install a GSM rom but still managed to brick somehow. Didnt touch any system files or do anything to where i should be bricked either. Any idea when a full stock Odin package will be made? My phone has been bricked for almost 2 days now
Edit: i started a tread here a few days ago -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1731416 if anyone cares to look or has any advice for me
Thanks

What have you tried so far? Have you tried reflashing cwm recovery in Odin?
I did the same thing that the OP said, flashed that omega rom and now my phone wont turn on either.
I was going to try the jig method

I want to do this but I somehow need to get the phone on. The buttons dont work.
Any luck?
My phone got stuck booting, so I tried to install the omega rom. The install worked well, and I clicked "reboot." Now the phone won't turn on. I can't get to ODIN or recovery anymore.
Did you guys find any fixes?

What happened is that you flashed a rom that was meant for the international version of the S3 and your on the US version. The only fix I have found is to send it to mobiletechvideos.com. I did and they say they can fix it and maybe save my data I have on it ( I just sent it in)
My fingers are crossed for the data recovery but as far as the phone I am going to send it for a exchange anyway.
Welp, I'm sad to say I just did the same thing too. Should have read. I'm a stinkin noob at this. I installed the I9300 version on a US version phone. Has there been any more development on this? Is the hardware fried, or is there a fix through that mobiletechvideos.com that was mentioned? What was the outcome of that, Taygutta, if you don't mind me re-bringing back up a potentially painful topic?? This thread made me a little sick, since it's my brother's new phone (someone else that knew what they were doing rooted it for him but he didn't like the rom, so I thought I would help him find a few other options to try flashing.)
Anyway, any confirmation that I'm buying my brother a new phone (so I can emotionally prepare for the purchase) or are there some other options?
There's one more thing you can try. There's a little device called a USB Jig. It was made for SGS-2 to clear the yellow triangle and reset flash counts in ODIN mode. It also puts your phone in ODIN mode by simply plugging it into the USB port of a powered down phone. Once in ODIN mode, you can reflash a stock ROM, recovery, etc. You can buy these for around $20 or less on the web.
If this does not work, I'm afraid nothing will.
Good luck.

Somewhere in the thread an answer exists. You are not the first to do this.
I think the jig is the best way.

Odin seems to be broken on my Galaxy S3

Hey guys,
This may sound weird but I can't seem to pretty much flash anything thru Odin. I have no clue as to what could be the issue. I tried multiple usb ports and nothing. It's so weird. Any ideas as to what is happening?

Did you just try flashing one file or multiple files?
If you just tried one file, it could be a bad download. Just re-download the file and try again.
If you've tried multiple files and they all can't be flashed, then I'm not sure what's going on? What does ODIN say when you try to flash?
You do have the Samsung drivers installed, right? Is this a sudden issue? Has it worked in the past? Try loading the Samsung drivers and Odin on a different computer.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah this seems sudden not sure why, and in the past it has worked when I rooted it. Last night I tried Odin-ing back to full stock to get stock recovery, but the odin said it failed. Now after i rebooted the phone, I wasn't getting 4g, I was getting Edge. i wonder if i broke my 4g signal as well. You guys think I should try the mobile odin?
Edit: Alright, I used mobile odin and that worked, however, I still don't get 4g network, and now every time I connect my phone to Kies on PC it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via kies" when I happened to be ALL stock. These a little issues I never had before, it's weird.

This thread should help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804123
wow you guys rock, I never would've thought it was the IMEI. It turns out the IMEI on the phone got completely lost, my guess during the bad Odin flashes. Why you guys think that happened though? Thanks for the link stevessvt. I followed the thread, but some of its download links were not working, so I was lead to another similar thread with links working properly http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1801997 and I managed to restore my IMEI back into the phone. I wish I would've seen your post a lot sooner, I even went to T-mobile to see if it was a sim card malfunction or a 4g outage in the area, but they couldn't figure it out so they are sending me a new phone tomorrow...damn now I gotta return this one.
I wonder why this happened though?? All I was trying to do was flash back to stock so I can get stock recovery back, but like I said earlier it failed me like three times.
Thanks you guys for leading me to the right direction.
