Hey there,
My specific question is how much data does a text message use in GV? Wondering how little data I could get away with having using GV.

A text message is vanishingly small compared to anything else you'll be doing on your phone. You're cutting it way too close if you're worried about going over your data limit by sending texts via GV.
If you're curious as to EXACTLY how much data it uses, I hear there's this great new invention called a search engine. I think Google makes one.
I have tried googling it....That is why I posted it here. I am not switching to GV until I know I would be okay on a light data plan. I was hoping someone would have some experience with this.

Seems about right, 140 Bytes.
I didn't say "google it" because I'm lazy - I said it because you're lazy.
Before I responded, I searched for "sms data size" - the answer is in the first result. The second result is the SMS wikipedia entry, which also has it.
I easily got that you were calling me lazy. Thank you. I over thought my own question. I wrongly assumed that SMS data size from cell carriers was not the same as SMS w/ GV data. Which gave me all sorts of silly queries in google. Not the first or last time I will feel dumb.
Just turning your phone on (initial ping/sync) will use more data than any normal number of SMS you can send on your phone. Not to mention that you end up sending the majority of your Google Voice SMS from a PC because its so much easier. And when you're on WiFi you're not using data either.
There's not a data plan small enough that would be broken by Google Voice SMS.

I have done a search and not found if there is a way to completely disable text messaging and/or SMS/MMS on my new tilt 2.
I have an unlimited data plan and still need to connect for that but I dont/wont use the messaging crap.
is this even possible??

I am on T-Mobile, so I'm not familiar with what AT&T can do, but on our network you can log in to your account at the website and disable text messaging. It won't be gone from the phone, but you won't get any text messages. I'm not sure if this turn of OUTBOUND texting.
Ill take a look in the registry for you, i think the most you'll be able to do is disable the messaging driver, but im not sure what that will do. ill be back in a bit
If you dont/wont use it... why even bother with disabling it? I dont think we're charged if we recieve a text only for sending. I could be wrong here though.
Are you worried about accidently opening a contact and typing out a message and sending it to them?

Nope but the phone tried to send an sms to some unknown/wrong number that called me!
And to Arron MC...........if you check at att site it says we get charged for BOTH incoming AND outgoing texts!!
Is it just me, or is there anyway to remove the option to Send a Message to any numbers not designated as "Mobile"?
In my address book, numbers designated as Home or Work still give me the option to Text them.
Its frustrating to accidentally send a Text to my Wife's work number, because I selected the wrong option in People, when it shouldnt even show as an option unless its a Mobile.
Any one able to help on this?

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything but maybe just don't text the wrong number...?? Generally you should probably know your wife's cell phone number vs. her work number.

Yes, I do, and you are right, user error is the most at fault here.
I know my wife's cell number, but I hardly know anyone elses. Thats why I keep a detailed Google address book, so that I dont have to.
However I still think its silly that it allows you to designate numbers as mobile or not, but then automatically gives you an option to text non-mobile numbers. Is it not?
And if it is silly, its something Id like to correct if I could, hence asking the community if anyone else has seen this, and knows of any way to address it besides always pushing the decision on the user.
That's a good point. I thought that was annoying as well. I do most of my messaging straight from the messaging app but it still shows all numbers. It's a bit annoying.

Sorry I don't have an answer, just want to say I'm with u on this. I think its reasonable to expect such a genius phone to know it can't send a text to a land line.
Although, as I type this I'm realizing that more companies are using cell phone for their primary lines and employees. Who knows, maybe we will be able to send texts to land lines someday soon. If a regular phone has an lcd for cid display why couldn't it display a text message... things that make you go "hmmm"
I asked a similar question before in a different thread... but does anyone know if the People app source is ever released when they release the source for the EVO ROM?
I imagine the hardest part about excluding the option to message other numbers would be finding the right spot to implement an if statement. Then would it be possible to compile the APK and install that custom version on my phone? While I would be in there I'd probably address the First name sorting problem
I'm 100% with you on this. I know it's part of user control but it shouldn't have to be.
There should be a checkable option in the Messages/SMS app: "Include Non-Mobile Numbers" and it should be off by default.
I also wish you could exclude certain contacts in the Messages/SMS app. There are people at work I would never text but I have their number in case they call me (I often am the "go-to IT guy") so I know who it is.
Ah well, we can hope!
I'm so with everyone on this..It annoys the hell out of me.
but you know what? I found out that apparently Sprint has some kind of service that will txt to landlines.
txt your home phone and you'll see..maybe there is a way to turn that off i dont know. didnt check much further into it

Yes, I've done it by accident many times. Those who I've texted (landline instead of wireless), said they answered the call and was given the option of having my text "read" to them. In fact, I just did it yesterday to my brother, thought I was texting his cell and instead sent it to his home. His wife answered and some "computer lady" read her my text...

I know this version of the G1's Contact.apk has this option (it was my request of the dev lol)
It works on my EVO (2.1 rooted) but MAN it's ugly after using People for the last few days.

I hate to say it but some people's mobile number is their home number. Lots of peep no longer have land lines at all. If you put a filter on what the sms app shows you would likely have as many people unhappy about that as you do this. If your going to error, do it on the side of making things possible as opposed to restricting things is likely the logic in play here.

I thought the messaging app did have that option then I realized I use handsent and it does have a mobile only option in its send settings.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
i guess it depends on how many contacts you have but you could create a group that only contained mobile numbers. Although if you have a significant amount of contacts this would probably be a pain
I created separate "land" contacts for those I text and that have land lines. Lousy but works.

Download handcent sms from the market and under settings, then send message settings, check,"show mobile num only" should work for you. Sorry if this was already posted, I didn't read the full thread
Sent from my HTC Evo using XDA App
Hello,
Running Cyanogen CM6 RC1 here. I've been having trouble sending long text messages, which I initially diagnosed as a problem sending MMS.Specifically whenever I tried to send a long text message (longer than 160 chars) it would just hang and say "sending" for like 5 minutes before I get a failure report. Curiously, I had no trouble sending or receiving messages with multimedia content, like images.
After some additional tinkering and web searching, I discovered that MMS was working fine. Rather, my phone is trying to send text messages between 161 and 480 characters as SMS without breaking them apart into the appropriate number of parcels. Above 460, or 3x160, the phone is converting them to MMS and it goes through just fine.
Is there a way to change the threshold before which SMS are converted to MMS? I think all the EVO owners are pretty much on the same plan which gives us unlimited media messaging, therefore there is no point in not sending any SMS over 160 chars as an MMS. Is there a way we could change the threshold to 1? I imagine this is what HTC did in their messenger that was installed with Sense.
*Temporary solution:* If anyone else out there is having this problem, but doesn't have a solution, I have a temporary one. Simply download and use the free Handcent SMS application, and in the settings (settings>send message settings>Split 160) change the value from "Don't split" to "Simple Split". This will automatically break up messages between 161-460 into 2-3 parcels of 160 chars or less.
Handcent i think has those setting parameters.
also, this is a known issue already, and has already been greatly discussed.

Sorry, I was typing an edit as you made the mention about handcent. However, I haven't found the setting that allows you to change the threshold--only to make the message split. Also, it will allow to turn off conversion altogether. Am I not seeing it?
Also, perhaps I'm not so savvy here, but I've been unable to find any solutions on forums or anywhere. If this issue is already very well discussed, any chance you provide me with a link please?
I have this same problem which is VERY annoying! Like you said I have not seen it discussed before either!
It's not a CM6 issue.
It's an Android issue.

Ah, next time I'll use the questions section. Regarding Handcent, does this actually allow me set the threshold, or just break up longer messages into multiple SMS--I mean, does Handcent present another solution other than the one I specified in my initial post?
AFAIK, SMS length is an agreed upon standard that probably in the near future won't be changed. longer messages will be broken up into transmissable lengths of 160 chars, until a message is long enough that it is actually simpler on the network to send the whole thing as a single MMS loaf.
I want Google talk to handle my voicemails, but after flashing End of Days last night (and subsequently, to restore to make it stop, MikFroyo), my google talk app handles all my incoming communications.
Here's the thing. I don't want it to. I like that it delivers my voicemails, but my set up on both mikfroyo and end of days both accommodate for messages. My Google Talk widget is on the far right screen on both.
What can I do to make it stop taking my texts but leave the voicemail?
I would uninstall it, reinstall it, but upon that, disable the text handling feature.

Is that part of the install process or is that something I can get to somewhere in settings?
I forgot to mention, when I uninstall it, I don't get any texts anyone sends me until I re-install it. My voicemails go to my text message inbox...so it's kind of a screwy circle.

Figured it out.
It wasn't entirely my fault, as the check boxes are cleverly named.
Here's the process (for anyone viewing this who wanted to know the answer):
Open up google voice inbox
Hit menu>more>settings>notifications and sync
*Edit* Check the box called Notifications via Text Message. It'll say you'll receive double notifcations. Hit okay, we'll fix that problem in a second.
Then, under that, disable all inbox notifications for Google Voice. This will prevent double notifications.
This will send the messages BACK to the stock messaging app (and to your GV inbox as well, but since you turned off GV notifications, you won't get a double notification for a text). The only downside is GV will text you every time you get a voicemail (which is no big deal). Other than that, everything is back to normal.
Thank you Teh Roxxorz for putting up with my GV-noobness until I figured it out

so is this still the setup? or did you change anything else? I made the porting mistake today and the google voice texting is driving me crazy. almost as bad as 9016 texts
thanks
Just curious. I had this happen to me as well but I thought it was because I linked my Sprint number to GV and thought that it is now taking over everything. I personally deal with the fact that GV takes over my messages (doesn't work for Safereader on Vlingo) but I like that texts pop up on my computer due to the GV extension for Chrome.
Did you link your GV to your Sprint number as well? Or does everyone that installs GV now have it take over their texts?

I linked my Sprint number to my GV and that's when it started sending texts to my GV instead of my regular messaging app. Before I linked it up, it only routed my voicemail to my GV inbox. It was very frustrating to me, as in the aosp rom and the sense roms I use I have my messaging apps set up where I like them and it's a pain in the ass to incorporate a GV widget into my set up ergonomically.
The process I outlined above works no matter what you're using (froyo, gingerbread with and without sense). I've used it on End of Days (which is a CM7 kang) and MikFroYo and it was the same process.
I haven't used it on my computer at all, so I don't know anything about that.
POsting here because it was first google result and I found an updated fix. Im on stock 4.4.4 Oneplus

Stop texts from breaking up, How?
Every time I get a long text message it's broken up into multiple messages, it's annoying because sometimes they dont all come in at the same time, or they do and i think i have a **** ton of msgs lol. It's the same on the stock messaging app and google's messaging app. Is there a setting somewhere that I've missed? It's happened with incoming msgs from iphones and android phones on different carriers.

There is little you can do, it is the carrier of the sender that is doing it. Many carriers limit the number of characters you can have per text. So if they go over it gets broken into multiple text messages. It is not an issue on your end.
I also hate this.. When I had att I didn't have this problem..
Wasn't there an option to send messages bigger then a # of characters through MMS instead of using normal split SMS?

Just a guess, but I'd say it's likely due to being Google's app and having tighter integration with the framework than carrier based bloat.

Just tried this sending myself a very long text via Wi-Fi on Sprint messaging app; it does work to combine the messages without converting to MMS.
Like others have said variables may limit results. My wife is also on my Sprint account using an iPhone 5 and her messages to me split from what I can see; don't know if hers from me split or not. Cross platform texting hasn't been reliable.
Have you tried the setting?

Initially failed to Motorola Photon Q. Had found the setting and enabled it and rebooted the phone; split the long message into 4 out-of-order texts. Did the System settings/System update/Update Profile on both phones and it works both ways. Sent the same text to to the iPhone 5 and it split. I've asked my wife to update her profile but she's busy; will try again later.
On my phone, had to defrost Samsung DM Service and reinstall Sprint Zone and let it update and opt out of EUL anonymous data sharing, agree to terms before I could update the profile.
BTW, combining the long text and sending a short text after that may have the shorter message arriving first. I actually sent an inquiry after getting notification that the long text test message had been forwarded back to me. The notice and inquiry went through before I got the combined message sent first.
I don't know if it happened to me or not.. never pay attention to it....gotta test later to see if if it's the same problem
How long is long. . I tested by sending to myself. But don't know if it is long enough.
My test text message consists of 80 words which was splitting into 4 text messages. Seems to be working between two different Android phones but still unknown if profile update will get it working cross-platform to/from iPhone. The Sprint iPhone 5 on the account seems to frequently have inability to sync texts with Android over Wi-Fi. Sometimes, it's just texting in general that the iPhone 5 loses.
For testing, just kept using the same message forwarded until it was received by both phones without the split.
May be wrong but sending it to yourself may only be an indication your phone can combine. It takes the profile update to tell Sprint you wish to use the combining method which appears to be an exception to every phone. Being on Gingerbread and CM for a long time, this is the first time I've seen the combining feature. About time! Hope it continues to work without frequent profile updates then broke again/update again.
This doesn't make sense. .i sent to my wife iPhone.. she received one full message but when she sent to me using the same text message it broke up to 4...wth

I haven't tried the profile update and retest with the iPhone 5 yet. Haven't seen the the settings menu on the iPhone 5, either. I think that phone is still on iOS7; afraid the update would result in early upgrade.
Not on the iPhone just the note 4
Open the stock messaging app and go to text message settings and make sure auto combination is checked.
