Is it just me, or is there anyway to remove the option to Send a Message to any numbers not designated as "Mobile"?
In my address book, numbers designated as Home or Work still give me the option to Text them.
Its frustrating to accidentally send a Text to my Wife's work number, because I selected the wrong option in People, when it shouldnt even show as an option unless its a Mobile.
Any one able to help on this?

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything but maybe just don't text the wrong number...?? Generally you should probably know your wife's cell phone number vs. her work number.

Yes, I do, and you are right, user error is the most at fault here.
I know my wife's cell number, but I hardly know anyone elses. Thats why I keep a detailed Google address book, so that I dont have to.
However I still think its silly that it allows you to designate numbers as mobile or not, but then automatically gives you an option to text non-mobile numbers. Is it not?
And if it is silly, its something Id like to correct if I could, hence asking the community if anyone else has seen this, and knows of any way to address it besides always pushing the decision on the user.
That's a good point. I thought that was annoying as well. I do most of my messaging straight from the messaging app but it still shows all numbers. It's a bit annoying.

Sorry I don't have an answer, just want to say I'm with u on this. I think its reasonable to expect such a genius phone to know it can't send a text to a land line.
Although, as I type this I'm realizing that more companies are using cell phone for their primary lines and employees. Who knows, maybe we will be able to send texts to land lines someday soon. If a regular phone has an lcd for cid display why couldn't it display a text message... things that make you go "hmmm"
I asked a similar question before in a different thread... but does anyone know if the People app source is ever released when they release the source for the EVO ROM?
I imagine the hardest part about excluding the option to message other numbers would be finding the right spot to implement an if statement. Then would it be possible to compile the APK and install that custom version on my phone? While I would be in there I'd probably address the First name sorting problem
I'm 100% with you on this. I know it's part of user control but it shouldn't have to be.
There should be a checkable option in the Messages/SMS app: "Include Non-Mobile Numbers" and it should be off by default.
I also wish you could exclude certain contacts in the Messages/SMS app. There are people at work I would never text but I have their number in case they call me (I often am the "go-to IT guy") so I know who it is.
Ah well, we can hope!
I'm so with everyone on this..It annoys the hell out of me.
but you know what? I found out that apparently Sprint has some kind of service that will txt to landlines.
txt your home phone and you'll see..maybe there is a way to turn that off i dont know. didnt check much further into it

Yes, I've done it by accident many times. Those who I've texted (landline instead of wireless), said they answered the call and was given the option of having my text "read" to them. In fact, I just did it yesterday to my brother, thought I was texting his cell and instead sent it to his home. His wife answered and some "computer lady" read her my text...

I know this version of the G1's Contact.apk has this option (it was my request of the dev lol)
It works on my EVO (2.1 rooted) but MAN it's ugly after using People for the last few days.

I hate to say it but some people's mobile number is their home number. Lots of peep no longer have land lines at all. If you put a filter on what the sms app shows you would likely have as many people unhappy about that as you do this. If your going to error, do it on the side of making things possible as opposed to restricting things is likely the logic in play here.

I thought the messaging app did have that option then I realized I use handsent and it does have a mobile only option in its send settings.

i guess it depends on how many contacts you have but you could create a group that only contained mobile numbers. Although if you have a significant amount of contacts this would probably be a pain
I created separate "land" contacts for those I text and that have land lines. Lousy but works.

Download handcent sms from the market and under settings, then send message settings, check,"show mobile num only" should work for you. Sorry if this was already posted, I didn't read the full thread

hello, i often have to taxt 15 people the same message, does anyone know if i can group these together instead of inserting their names in one by one. thanks.
as far as I know, SMS can only be sent to one person at a time (hence Simple Messaging Service). I sell cell phones, and have asked my reps this question in the past; all of them gave me a resounding "no".
Group SMS, I'm sure there is something like that....

I believe what he means is multiple SMS receipents for the same message? There's a lot of mobile phones that can do that now.
If you go pocketgear or handago, i think there's quite a few selection you can choose from.
Regards.
thats what i meant,,, any ideas what the programes are called??. peter
If you just put several numbers, spaced out with ";", does that not work?
Cheers
thanks , yes that works but only for that time, i want to keep that group so every week i can just send to one group .. peter
can't you make a contact with that list as mobile phone number ? Not a nice solution, but it might work.
tried that, doesnt work for some reason , thanks anyway. peter
I tried saving a list as one number as described, even though I use semi-colon as seperator it appears as one long number when calling it from contacts, it does however work that one time when entered manually with seperator.
One way is to use Contacts to create a category for the group of numbers, then add the numbers you want as contacts within that category.
Then select that category in Contacts, select all, tap and hold, then select Send SMS. This puts all the numbers in the 'To:' field separated by ';' I haven't tried actually sending an SMS like this so I don't know if it will work.
If it does, then hopefully it will fill in the numbers from the Contacts category correctly each time.
Has anybody tried this yet?
I have tried, it but even if you insert the ";" and a space when you press send SMS it transfers the number without the ";" and space so its just one long number in my case 15 x 11 = 165 :x

I use this method often and it works. The only bad thing is that I have to tick every single contact in the category.
no matter what trick to use with Contacts it will be limited to 15 names only ... try search for "sendSMS" free s/w ... it does the job nicely with retrying for failed messages ... it supports also flash SMSs
saving all the numbers in contacts with a ";" and a space did work . i tried it yesterday several times but nothing happened, this morning they all came through  they must have got lost in cyber space somewhere.
thanks for every ones help and sugestions .
Something very odd.
Ive signed up to my-tmobile looking over my unbilled usage i can see SMS messages and Picture messages i have not sent. To non UK standard mobile numbers.
Usually starting with 100 or 10.
Is this a software bug? or have i some how infected myself with an android scam app or something?
i will be phoning up tmobile again later but wanted to see if anyone else had this issue.
Nutsy
If I remember correctly they don't actually show the numbers you have contacted, those numbers starting with 100 or 10 are just an alias T-mobile gives to numbers you contact.
Might just be your normal sms and mms then, if you haven't sent any at all then talk to T-mobile.
Well i deffinently didnt sent any picture messages. And it shows the Text messages i did sent as the correct numbers.
So this is making me a little worryed. I have what i thought where safe programs from the app market. Is there anyway of scanning an android phone of melicous software?
If u have handcent sms on your handset make sure auto convert to mms has been unchecked.otherwise it will convert all your long sms text messages to mms.
Nope just using the htc software. i might give tmobile a call again in a bit see what the hells going on. This isnt something i want to keep having to check up every other day for the next 2 years.
So is back to the other question. in case i have some how got a dodgy program running and doing all this is there anyway to scan my phone?
Really was hoping some one else might know whats going on.
no idea i am afraid, but just to make sure it's not some scam app, uninstall everything...
you;ve not been using any of the options in the STK have you? i think it appears in the menu as interactive? cos those are all done by text messages

simply text them the number or in your text messaging window (depending on what version of sense you are running) you'll see an option to send an MMS or something... in there you can send a vCard.. which is just sending them someones contact information that is stored on your phone. When the person recieves the vcard they open it up and are given the option to save it to their own phone. It will give them everything you have.. the persons phone numbers, address', email address' etc etc
is there an easier way. like just sending them the number?
Yes, just go to the contact you want to send, then in menu select send to button
and then select the info from that contact you want to include on the message
It´s very easy

Sure - just send them the number.
What are you actually asking here? How to send them a number? One way would be to tap in the phone number as a text and send it, but I suspect you're actually asking a different question.
I want to know how to send somebody another persons number in a text.
I tried
going to the person's number that i want to sell. then going to menu, pressing "send contact by message" when i try to send it that way it doesnt work.
in the message field when i try sending it that way "the contact information you have selected from 'name' will be send to the recipient of this message"
i want to know an easier way where it just send the number in the text field.
vcard method doesn't seem to work either.
Yeah, I know what you mean. Even the cheapest handset in the world makes it easy to insert a number into a sms.
I was trying this the other day and it's not as simple as you might think or as it should be.
The only option I have is to send it as a mms, which is not included in my contract. There's no option to insert a number whilst editing a sms. Stupid really, you would have thought that an OS that's promoted as being business friendly would make it easy no send contact details.
ANOTHER reason my next handset will be Android
i dont know what the pluses for having an android. can anyone tell me?
isnt an android rom being developed for our phone?

Android is just a different operating system. Its not really a ROM, but more of a hack. It unloads windows mobile and loads up android OS. Pretty simple, just copy the files to your SD card, load the .exe and wait for android to load.
what are the perks to having the android? it seems like its better than windows mobile.
can someone tell me the difference? and the pos, and negs of both.

off topic much!
Do some reading in the android subforum and you'll learn ALL about it!
Regarding your question about texting a person a number.. "it's not as simple as you might think or as it should be" It really isnt that difficult. I dont know why you guys are having issues.
When you open the persons contact you want to text to select the menu option, select "reply with MMS"... You said it wasnt an option but it IS there. Then when that opens select menu again then select "Attachment..." then select Menu AGAIN
click "Add vCard" a list of contacts will pop up, select the person you want.. it will attach, click ok then click send. Done and done..
NOW.. you want a REALLY easy way to send a number to someone.. go to the contact of the person you want to text... go to where you write a text message.. pop out the keyboard and TYPE the number in... then press send !!!!!
Also... Android doesnt make it any more simple to do this. I have the 2.1 version running on my phone as well and.. yeah just about the same really.
Hi,
I found a strange little bug with the HTC Sense People app.
I have all my contacts synced from my Google Account but the problem is "Call Mobile" has 44 at the start of the number. Meaning when ever I try make a call it says number not recognised - I think it needs to have +44. When I got into edit contact it has the actual mobile number with 077 etc...
Any suggestions?
I've noticed this, I'm betting the contact you have this problem with is linked to Facebook. If you look at that persons Facebook details I bet they've put a phone number in that starts with 44. There is no way around it unless you can persuade them to change it. It seems that it uses this info over the Google info. The only thing to do is to unlink the contact from Facebook till they sort their number format out.

Thanks for getting back to me and yes they are synced with Facebook.
I have found a little work around though, when you are in the dialer and have their name highlighted use the optical pad to move left and right and it will choose their other numbers.
Ah! That's interesting to know, although I usually select ppl to call or text via the people app, so it kinda stuffs you that way. Oddly it will work for sending texts but not calling.

Hey guys,
i just found out that if you change the number (from mobile to work or home or something like that) it sort of fixes it. You still get the wrong facebook number in there but ay least you also get a usable number to call.
I just purchased my HTC Desire yesterday (and it is LOVELY)!
But for some reason the datestamp for INCOMING sms texts are all wrong. it is like 4 hours behind, but the outgoing timestamp is correct.
is there a way to check the settings? I don't know why it's like that. I dont know what time people texted me.
Thanks for all the help
Ensure to set date and time correctly, from Menu options
That defines your phone internal clock, regardless what you want to see in the clock widget..
To simplify thing, better to opt for "current" in the location options
from my Desire + XDA App
what do you mean? I set the date and time correctly. And when I go into location it only shows
use wireless networks and use gps satellites
(i dont have a data plan)
the desire dosent timestamp a sms when it receves it, instead it uses the one given by the sms message centre that sends it to you .....
so you mean my provider? because the received sms time is correct on my previous phones..
What he means is, it'll use the time from the phone that sent it to you I believe.
I SMS internationally; and it's quite annoying because it will move their message up in between mine and thread mine. He's in Canada, I'm Australia so he's behind so I have to go searching up through my messages to find it.
eg:
his reply goes here:
me 3pm: message

No what i mean is, when someone sends you a sms, it goes from there phone to a sms message centre, and then gets sent to your phone, the desire uses the timestamp given to the sms at the message centre so there nothing wrong with your phone, it even happens to me for some reason, if i reply to a sms straight away it appears above the one i just receved
happens to me as well. i just use "sms time fix" from the market, and ive enabled all the options in there cause it wasnt working on just by setting the hours in advanced. now my msg times are good, but it now uses my phones time. atleast it shows the proper time now.
thats weird.. i know what you mean sorta, but i get texts locally. so shouldnt it be the same time? and yea, it moves above mine as well! it's four hours behind (even though it was sent after me)
is there a way to change the sms message center time or anything like that (i doubt that lol) because my friends who text me are local too
