hello, i often have to taxt 15 people the same message, does anyone know if i can group these together instead of inserting their names in one by one. thanks.
as far as I know, SMS can only be sent to one person at a time (hence Simple Messaging Service). I sell cell phones, and have asked my reps this question in the past; all of them gave me a resounding "no".
Group SMS, I'm sure there is something like that....

I believe what he means is multiple SMS receipents for the same message? There's a lot of mobile phones that can do that now.
If you go pocketgear or handago, i think there's quite a few selection you can choose from.
Regards.
thats what i meant,,, any ideas what the programes are called??. peter
If you just put several numbers, spaced out with ";", does that not work?
Cheers
thanks , yes that works but only for that time, i want to keep that group so every week i can just send to one group .. peter
can't you make a contact with that list as mobile phone number ? Not a nice solution, but it might work.
tried that, doesnt work for some reason , thanks anyway. peter
I tried saving a list as one number as described, even though I use semi-colon as seperator it appears as one long number when calling it from contacts, it does however work that one time when entered manually with seperator.
One way is to use Contacts to create a category for the group of numbers, then add the numbers you want as contacts within that category.
Then select that category in Contacts, select all, tap and hold, then select Send SMS. This puts all the numbers in the 'To:' field separated by ';' I haven't tried actually sending an SMS like this so I don't know if it will work.
If it does, then hopefully it will fill in the numbers from the Contacts category correctly each time.
Has anybody tried this yet?
I have tried, it but even if you insert the ";" and a space when you press send SMS it transfers the number without the ";" and space so its just one long number in my case 15 x 11 = 165 :x

I use this method often and it works. The only bad thing is that I have to tick every single contact in the category.
no matter what trick to use with Contacts it will be limited to 15 names only ... try search for "sendSMS" free s/w ... it does the job nicely with retrying for failed messages ... it supports also flash SMSs
saving all the numbers in contacts with a ";" and a space did work . i tried it yesterday several times but nothing happened, this morning they all came through  they must have got lost in cyber space somewhere.
thanks for every ones help and sugestions .

How do you select several people at a time when you send a same message?
its very annoying when u only allow to select one person at a time and click on add recipient millions time when you try to send a message like "happy new year" to 300 people.
Anyway, happy new year to everyone.
if you press enter on the key board it goes to the contact list you have to pick one at a time but you can do it in the same message, not sure if there's another way around this...
Yes, it's limiting. I had been looking for a mail client that has the concept of mailing list for a long time but could't find one.
If anyone knows of such a mail client, please share.
Power SMS has a functionality to define "groups" for multisending, and selecting a group it adds automatically the recipients in standard sms. of course you still have to add contacts one at time, but you have to do the process one time only (next year, hopefully, you'll still have the "new year's eve" database)

so u mean we can't go to multi-selection mode and select several people at at time then? Does the Power SMS able to do so? Coz u can't define a group that work for every message.
But thanks.
as an add on to your Q how can you make the text box bigger any one know?
Have you tried groupsms in google?
Worked for me. I only know because someone else on this forum recomended it to me for exactly the same reason but in another thread.
Hope this helps.
Enter your numbers as follows
<no 1>;<no 2>;<no 3> and so on...
You can save a contact with the mobile numbers set to a group of numbers in the format svown and then enter this one contact and the to: list is filled with the numbers for you.
Actually... there are 2 others ways to add multiple recipients... although neither is as quick as simply ticking all that apply!
[1] Tap the word "To:", select a contact, and repeat.
[2] In the space after the "To:", type the first letter of the contact name... and a selection of contacts starting with that letter will be shown in a horizontally scrolling list just above the keyboard. When you've found which contact to add in that list... click it, and it will be added to the "To:" field, followed by a ";" ready for you to repeat the process for the next contact!
GROUP SMS

I've been using this for ages...grown very comfortable with it too. Now, yesterday, all of a sudden, something happened and it doesn't put in the ";" automatically I admit, it's only a small thing, but it's annoying once you're so used to doing something one way. So if anyone has any idea how to fix it...please help!
PS: Closing messaging and restarting it didn't work, and neither did a soft reset

i've just tried Your recipe for sending group message and it's brilliant. THNX for the tip
Got my Touch Pro 2 from MObile Phones Direct (in UK) last week Love it so far. But maybe it's meant to happen but when I send an SMS a copy appears in my Inbox with message prefixed by Me:. Wht's this al about then??
Its called "Threaded SMS" and shows your texts as a conversation.
I like it but I know some people don't.
There are ways to turn it off mentioned all over the boards.
i love it
because you can clearly see the history of the last messages and also it harder to get the wrong person you want to write a msg to ..
And how can i delete one message from thread?
thanks...
You can't, that's the special "Don't cheat on your wife"-option HTC has built in ...
No, kidding. When TF3D enabled click on the sms-icon in the bottom bar.
Click on the latest SMS recieved from the person.
You get a threaded SMS with at the bottom a bar in which you can see emails from that person, call history, etc.
Click Menu > Delete
Select the messages to be deleted
Click done
Yesss.
I didnt think that i can use the delete menu item to delete a message...
So a thought it is delete the entire thread.
Thank you!
Got some very annoying problems with rhodium here. First of all - choosing different number than primary for some contacts doesn't work - the phone still tries to call the primary number. Next thing - extension numbers that definitely worked before stopped working the very day I got rhodium - anybody else experiencing this problem? Finally - I want to put the number that I got in text msg to my address book. Can't find the way. Plz help me a bit or I'm gonna dump that phone down the toilet where it belongs. Grrrrr, god it pissed me off today....
I can only help you with the last problem: When someone sends you a phone number via text, it should be highlighted. Then you hold down, and press save to contacts, or copy and paste it into an existing contact. If it is not highlighted, the people who sent it to you are probably leaving the area code off.
first of all which contact interface you use? touchflo 3d's contact or windows mobile own contact?
i think you use touchflo 3d's contact interface, which i never use.
Instead i use wm's own contact interface. it doesnt have the problem you mentioned. click on the contact name, all the numbers will come up,then you click on any number you like,it will dial, see nowhere i find the problem as per your description.
you can use keyswop to change left softkey(calendar) to wm's contact.
Nokiadashi,
Are you just trying to increase your post count for some reason? Your moronic posts are annoying with the large blue fonts, the cut and paste posts saying every problem is because of a ROM, and your useless "help."
Please learn some manners when posting
I second JReb's post & move to bannage if he keeps this up.
I copmpletely agree, Nokiadashi is just increasing post count, his posts arent helpful at all anyways. Get this moron off of XDA
So I've been searching all over the place for an answer. When adding multiple recipients to a text message it doesn't auto put in a ; after the persons name. so it only sends the message to the first person in the list. Is there anyway to enable this or do I have to manually put it in. Any help would be appreciated.
its alway been that way if i click on "To" & then select contacts. if you start typing a contact in the "To" field & then select it that way it should insert the semicolon
I know I have had many phones and many roms on those many phones but just today I tried to send to a few people only the first person in the list got it.

Give this a try.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=513170
Yeah that is still not as easy as just typing the names into the sms field and having it auto put the semicolon in.
figured it out
i changed the reg setting for predictive text and that took the semi colon away. hard reset and no predictive and got my semicolon back
Is it just me, or is there anyway to remove the option to Send a Message to any numbers not designated as "Mobile"?
In my address book, numbers designated as Home or Work still give me the option to Text them.
Its frustrating to accidentally send a Text to my Wife's work number, because I selected the wrong option in People, when it shouldnt even show as an option unless its a Mobile.
Any one able to help on this?

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything but maybe just don't text the wrong number...?? Generally you should probably know your wife's cell phone number vs. her work number.

Yes, I do, and you are right, user error is the most at fault here.
I know my wife's cell number, but I hardly know anyone elses. Thats why I keep a detailed Google address book, so that I dont have to.
However I still think its silly that it allows you to designate numbers as mobile or not, but then automatically gives you an option to text non-mobile numbers. Is it not?
And if it is silly, its something Id like to correct if I could, hence asking the community if anyone else has seen this, and knows of any way to address it besides always pushing the decision on the user.
That's a good point. I thought that was annoying as well. I do most of my messaging straight from the messaging app but it still shows all numbers. It's a bit annoying.

Sorry I don't have an answer, just want to say I'm with u on this. I think its reasonable to expect such a genius phone to know it can't send a text to a land line.
Although, as I type this I'm realizing that more companies are using cell phone for their primary lines and employees. Who knows, maybe we will be able to send texts to land lines someday soon. If a regular phone has an lcd for cid display why couldn't it display a text message... things that make you go "hmmm"
I asked a similar question before in a different thread... but does anyone know if the People app source is ever released when they release the source for the EVO ROM?
I imagine the hardest part about excluding the option to message other numbers would be finding the right spot to implement an if statement. Then would it be possible to compile the APK and install that custom version on my phone? While I would be in there I'd probably address the First name sorting problem
I'm 100% with you on this. I know it's part of user control but it shouldn't have to be.
There should be a checkable option in the Messages/SMS app: "Include Non-Mobile Numbers" and it should be off by default.
I also wish you could exclude certain contacts in the Messages/SMS app. There are people at work I would never text but I have their number in case they call me (I often am the "go-to IT guy") so I know who it is.
Ah well, we can hope!
I'm so with everyone on this..It annoys the hell out of me.
but you know what? I found out that apparently Sprint has some kind of service that will txt to landlines.
txt your home phone and you'll see..maybe there is a way to turn that off i dont know. didnt check much further into it

Yes, I've done it by accident many times. Those who I've texted (landline instead of wireless), said they answered the call and was given the option of having my text "read" to them. In fact, I just did it yesterday to my brother, thought I was texting his cell and instead sent it to his home. His wife answered and some "computer lady" read her my text...

I know this version of the G1's Contact.apk has this option (it was my request of the dev lol)
It works on my EVO (2.1 rooted) but MAN it's ugly after using People for the last few days.

I hate to say it but some people's mobile number is their home number. Lots of peep no longer have land lines at all. If you put a filter on what the sms app shows you would likely have as many people unhappy about that as you do this. If your going to error, do it on the side of making things possible as opposed to restricting things is likely the logic in play here.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I thought the messaging app did have that option then I realized I use handsent and it does have a mobile only option in its send settings.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
i guess it depends on how many contacts you have but you could create a group that only contained mobile numbers. Although if you have a significant amount of contacts this would probably be a pain
I created separate "land" contacts for those I text and that have land lines. Lousy but works.
