You do know r/w is read and write right? It being on r/w should let you write or make changes to the internal system. There has to be another reason why the tweaks your trying to apply aren't working. Maybe another file is interfering with your changes

[Q] Market still force-closing (CM 6.1.1+Pershoot)

Opening the Market installed from update.zip here on the foum, it just force-closes immediately.
Running CM 6.1.1 + Pershoot's 1.5ghz kernel.
Might it be Pershoot? Or the .zip? Is .apk better?

The one pre-installed with CM. Just "File Manager".
Halp!
This makes mt G2 almost unusable...

Use Root Explorer. It has a button on top that all you have to do is press to change the folder you are in to Read/Write and when you done modifying it, press the button to change it back to Read/Only

It won't let me change the permissions on /system (rest works).
Probably because I don't have the latest due to not having the market lol...
Can someone upload a newer Root Explorer?
"SU File Manager and Terminal". Best file manager you can buy, and it allows /system and /data to mount as rw in file explorer mode.
Sent from a Western Union telegram.
From adb shell or a term session on the phone, makes no difference:
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
If you still need the latest one let me know and I'll upload it to dropbox.

Alright, I removed it, but update.zip for the Market, once installed, still force-closes...
Does someone have a DEFINITE link to a working Market for 6.1.1?
I know there are at least 5 uploaded on this forum, and I'll start to try each one one by one since I can delete them now.
OK it failed again, but I installed the modded Gapps (was hoping to avoid having to install all Gapps, they waste resources) and the Market works.
Now to remove all the other crap...
edit: nevermind lol.....
Spoke too soon. It was working fine for a few minutes, then started force-closing constantly. Won't start now.

[Q] Rooted but unable to get system r/w

I know this probably sounds crazy, but my EVO is rooted (has been for months) and I used to have r/w access on system, app, etc. Now I can not get r/w access (tried mount r/w from market, mount command in term emulator). I've tried multiple roms (Myn's, Ava, CM 6.1.1, CM 7 RC1, Sprint lover's) and can not get it to work. I used Unrevoked to root and unrevoked forever...Any ideas? (and yes, i've searched)
I know you said you've already used term emulator but you can try ES file manager, it's free in the market. There's an "experimental" feature where you can mount it r/w and I just used it to paste a widget.txt file in the system folder to change my power widgets in MikFroyo and it worked like a charm... Worth a try
you might want to check in the bootloader screen just to make sure that S-OFF.... maybe unrevoked forever didnt take for some reason..??.
Just throwing out ideas, good luck
Yup...i've tried that as well...and I am S-Off...let me clarify something though...I am able to write to /System, but not /System/App or anything else under system. Is that not inherent? or maybe i'm just totally not thinking straight and i need to go back to Android 101 lol
Try using root explorer this works great. Just press R/W button at top off screen.

I had the same issue. Root explorer works well.

Synergy - /system/fonts mounted as r/o

OK, i have an Evo running Synergy RLS1 + GODMODE and the system is set as R/O. I need to gain access to /system/fonts anbd set to r/w. I have tried to use Root Explorer to no avail. I would like to permanently set /system/* to r/w and r/o at will. How would I go about doing that. I have tried using .ZIP files for Mount/Unmount system and tat still wouldn't let me change permissions to anything under /system. HELP.
Andrew
I don't know that you can "permanently" set it to R/W but if you use Root explorer, go into /system/fonts and click "Mount R/W" at the top that should give you the read/write access you need.
I tried that in Root Explorer and it never sets it to r/w.

Are the fonts named correctly? Are you rebooting afterwards?
There's a thread with a ton of flashable font zips, you can try that. Or if you can't find a flashable zip of the font you want, there's directions for making your own in the thread I mentioned. I'll see if I can find it & link you to it.
Edit: Found the thread, but looks like Matty beat me to it. Also remember that when rebooting you need to do a full reboot. If you have fastboot enabled, powering off & back on might not be enough, you'll either need to choose reboot from the long-press power options or from an app, or pull the battery.

[Q] Can't save file after editing using Root Explorer

I used root explorer to edit a system file, then save & exit. But the file reverts back to its original. Using root explorer, I mounted the system with Read & write access and I was able to cut and paste the files but can't save file after editing. I googled and saw few people had the same problem but could not find a solution for it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your response. Just tried but still not work.
Are u trying to change your screen density? If so it's specific rom related. Try using a different rom or lcd density from the market. Or lcd resolution. If that's not what your doing then disregard this post lol.

Still no luck. I knew the system mount with R/W access because I was able to cut and paste files, just can't save files though.
BTW thank you for moving my thread to the proper place.

[HOWTO] Speed up force closes in T989 ICS ROMs

I noticed that force closes would lock up my phone with ICS ROMs enough to make it completely unusable at times. I noticed that this is so because a system state dump is done every time it hangs by default. I don't know how to disable this internally, but found out how to prevent dumpstate from running when this occurs.
Code:
su
busybox chmod a-x /system/bin/dumpstate
Enjoy!
So we just open a terminal emulator and type in that code?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
An easier way is to navigate to /system/bin in Root Explorer, select dumpstate, long press, change permissions and remove execute permissions for all (system, user, etc).
Update: It's critical to ensure you have "R/W" permissions on the folder before doing this, if it reads "R/O" at the top, make sure you change it (change it by clicking on the "R/O", it will change to "R/W").

or you could do it through adb shell.

"Easier" is subjective, but yes, that is another way of doing it.

Thanks for this tip. I tried both methods, but no dice. I can't seem to change either directory to read/write.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
Reboot and try again. If it still doesn't work try flashing TDJs cache wipe script.

Uncheck all the Execute permissions, that's all you need to do.

yea that happened to me what i did was flashed darkside cache wipe n booted then went into manage apps, root explorer then cleared data/cache for the app (i have a feeling i didnt even need to darkside cache wipe i probably just needed to clear app data but those are the 2 steps i did anyways)
Sorry for the late responses. It seems like others covered the spread, though. You can type those commands into a terminal or with adb using adb shell. I've never done it with Root Explorer (I use ES...it's free and can browse/remount as root), but make sure it has root permissions before continuing. Also make sure that the /system partition has been mounted as read-write; it won't work otherwise.
Can confirm it works with root explorer just make sure you switch to r/w
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I posted about this working in Root Explorer, without trying it firsthand, I've tried it now, and it does work. The reason is this, the original post's command simply reads: for all (that's the "a" part) users remove execute (the "-x" part) permissions. You can mimic this functionality in any App with the ability to change file permissions. It's critical to ensure you have "R/W" permissions on the folder before doing this, if it reads "R/O" at the top, make sure you change it.
