[Q] Rooted but unable to get system r/w - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this probably sounds crazy, but my EVO is rooted (has been for months) and I used to have r/w access on system, app, etc. Now I can not get r/w access (tried mount r/w from market, mount command in term emulator). I've tried multiple roms (Myn's, Ava, CM 6.1.1, CM 7 RC1, Sprint lover's) and can not get it to work. I used Unrevoked to root and unrevoked forever...Any ideas? (and yes, i've searched)

I know you said you've already used term emulator but you can try ES file manager, it's free in the market. There's an "experimental" feature where you can mount it r/w and I just used it to paste a widget.txt file in the system folder to change my power widgets in MikFroyo and it worked like a charm... Worth a try
you might want to check in the bootloader screen just to make sure that S-OFF.... maybe unrevoked forever didnt take for some reason..??.
Just throwing out ideas, good luck

Yup...i've tried that as well...and I am S-Off...let me clarify something though...I am able to write to /System, but not /System/App or anything else under system. Is that not inherent? or maybe i'm just totally not thinking straight and i need to go back to Android 101 lol

Try using root explorer this works great. Just press R/W button at top off screen.

Read Only File System when removing apps

I am trying to remove some apps I dont use or want like the mail app and others and I know i have nand protection unlocked becasue I can run nand backup and restore. But when i run adb shell and rm Mail.apk i get message of rm failed for Mail.apk, read only file system. I am a noob with adb but is it possible i dont have nand unlocked?
Being able to NAND backup and restore doesn't have anything to do with having NAND unlocked.
You obviously don't have full root.
download or find (please pay for it on the market)
root explorer, run it, this will put you on the / directory which is the root of the phone, not the sd card, and up in the top right corner it says mount r/o or mount r/w
by default it is read only r/o
hit the button and beside it you will see small text saying 'mounted r/w'
if it lets you mount r/w then you should be good to go.
just navigate to your /system/app filder, long press on the apk file you want to delete and choose delete, it will error out if you dont have r/w access, but make sure the upper right corner still says 'mounted r/w' - sometimes when you mount the phone in the opening page, it doesnt mount everything as r/w so you might have to mount the /system/app folder.
so, if you have it mounted r/w and it says so, and it wont let you delete or rename anything, then you know that you do not have a full root, just the partial root and you will have to go thru and reroot it for full access.
there are simpler ways i imagine but root explorer is the king of file explorers as far as i am concerned.
the only thing it needs is a built in FTP and SMB (windows network) explorer.

I asked because I had a similar problem when I had stock rooted. Once I changed it went away.

hmmm wierd.
maybe a bad rooted rom?
someone correct me here but do you have SuperUser installed?
doesnt he have to have superuser installed to do it via root explorer, or login to a terminal via adb with 'su' to rename/move/delete
if you didnt type su, and then get the $ prompt you cant do what you are trying to do. ... ???
i dont think you need to type su to do the following command but it probably wouldn't hurt ??
i am very adb green but do know enough to run some commands, its just that i prefer to do it with root explorer rather than command prompt.

You can use Estrongs File Explorer and use the root option. No payment required. Unless you are running CM ROM, be sure to turn off the root option before closing the program, otherwise next time you open ES it will give a force close.

wow I love this forum what a huge response in such a short time I'm gonna test to see if I don't have nand properly unlocked and I tried using android mate to delete the apks and that didn't work either but I'm running fresh 1.0.2 currently
Just tried using es file explorer with root explorer and mount file system as writable and deleted the apk and everything worked great the app is gone! Thank you for the help this means i have nand unlocked right? I must have been doing something wrong in the adb shell
You can also issue the command 'adb remount'.
The system partition is mounted read only at start up and this command mounts it read/write. It has nothing to do at all with your NAND.
Ok good to know thank you for the advice like I said I'm an adb noob lol
do adb remount then try again
I removed wireless_tether using root explorer. When i try to install another version of wireless_tether, it says i am trying to overwrite another app, then wont let me install because it says its a system app. then I go in to look and see if I had truly removed it , it has a different name "andro tether" under settings/apps/manage apps. It doesn't show this in the root explorer for me to delete it. How can I fully delete it if its not showing there anymore.
I still cant install the new version. Help

[Q] What have i done wrong

Trying to load a new boot animation onto my DHD and I've encountered an odd problem, apparently i can't write system folders, root explorer won't mount it and adb won't push the file to it saying write only system making me think it's not rooted properly.
I though I'd rooted it fine with visonary as I got s-off installed and clockwork?
Hello buddy! I think i can help you!
Follow this steps :
- Go on Root Explorer and coppy the bootanimation.zip
-Than go to /system/customize/resource and before you past it, click in the white box in the right top that called "Mount R/W"
- Mount R/W will be Mount R/O
- Coppy it, reboot and be happy!
yeah tried that root explorer won't mount r/w hence the issue

Did you ever find a solution to this? I have the exact same problem where the system will not mount as r/w! The odd thing is that I have a custom rom installed so it should be rooted properly by default.
Anyone have any ideas?
is it something to do with having radio s-off and not the eng hboot?
Still have this problem only way round it is to flash in recovery, however leedroid gives an easier alternative if all your wanting is a custom boot animation

Has Root Explorer been granted superuser permissions?
You wont be able to change anything if it hasn't.
To check, open the Superuser app and check Root Explorer has a green dot beside it.
If not click it and set to remember.
Now open Root Explorer and the R/W option should work.
All good as far as superuser is concerned pretty sure the only way to edit those areas is through recovery
Sent from my Desire HD
Weird.
Try Android Revolution HD ROM. This lets you change bootanims easy
do you guys have s-off? the nand protection, wont let you write to /system/ while the device is booted, even if your rooted without s-off
I'm running leedroid so no longer an issue for me but should have s-off remember doing it before installing cwm

[Q] Market still force-closing (CM 6.1.1+Pershoot)

Opening the Market installed from update.zip here on the foum, it just force-closes immediately.
Running CM 6.1.1 + Pershoot's 1.5ghz kernel.
Might it be Pershoot? Or the .zip? Is .apk better?

Use Root Explorer. It has a button on top that all you have to do is press to change the folder you are in to Read/Write and when you done modifying it, press the button to change it back to Read/Only

It won't let me change the permissions on /system (rest works).
Probably because I don't have the latest due to not having the market lol...
Can someone upload a newer Root Explorer?
"SU File Manager and Terminal". Best file manager you can buy, and it allows /system and /data to mount as rw in file explorer mode.
Sent from a Western Union telegram.
From adb shell or a term session on the phone, makes no difference:
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
If you still need the latest one let me know and I'll upload it to dropbox.

Alright, I removed it, but update.zip for the Market, once installed, still force-closes...
Does someone have a DEFINITE link to a working Market for 6.1.1?
I know there are at least 5 uploaded on this forum, and I'll start to try each one one by one since I can delete them now.
OK it failed again, but I installed the modded Gapps (was hoping to avoid having to install all Gapps, they waste resources) and the Market works.
Now to remove all the other crap...
edit: nevermind lol.....
Spoke too soon. It was working fine for a few minutes, then started force-closing constantly. Won't start now.

[Q] Unable to mount sys to RW permission... Help

I've looked and looked so please don't flame me if I missed it.
I have an EVO rooted with unrevoked3, Myn's warm 2.2 rom, aman-ra recovery, and netarchy-toastmod-4.3-bfs-havs-more-sbc-universal-signed, kernel.
I am trying to do a few things in the system folder and every time I try it says insufficient permissions. I've tried spare parts mount and remount commands and I've tried using a terminal emulator. No go. I'm not sure if its busybox (i am using 1.17) cause when I try to install 1.18 it says it can't mount. Then my wifi stops working and setcpu no longer works. AHHHH.
Any help would be awesome.

Have you tried using a root level file explorer (root explorer or ES file explorer?). I use root explorer, which costs a few bucks, but is well worth it IMO. You can make any changes in the system folder you need to, just click the button that says mount r/w.
Hum... I will try that. I kinda was thinking that spare parts did the same thing. I will try this asap and let you know.
Thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate it.

Your welcome. Hope it works for ya. And as I said, root explorer costs a couple bucks, but ES file explorer is free I believe, but I've never used that one before.
SIMPLE SIMPLE!!! I just got root explorer and worked just fine. I guess spare parts and the emulator only give temp rw permission when the you close them it goes away... makes sense to me even if its not right.
Thanks again!!!

Sweet, glad it worked for you. Yea, Root Explorer is one of the most useful apps I have. It's awesome, for sure. One thing to keep in mind, sometimes when placing an app in the system/app folder, you need to long press on that app, then select permissions, and be sure that User: read and write are both checked. Sometimes they aren't for some reason, and the change you made won't show up. Just something too keep in mind.

[Q] busybox

Hi
I have a htc desire root with unrevoked 3.2
whenever i try to install busybox from the installer i get an error than there is insufficient space. it shows that actual space is 1555kb and required is 1000kb.
then why is this error??
also i tried accessing the system/xbin and system/bin folder through ES file explorer...and i found out that these folders are still not writable..
is this why i am not able to install busybox??
You have to S-off your phone first to make system/... writeable.
And next, you need a file explorer from the market, which supports root access. I recommend "root explorer", it's easy to handle and clear.

+1 for root explorer, no other I have used is as intuitive or feature rich, plus root explorer actually can access everything it says it can!
Have you tried installing bb from titanium backup? Just install the free version and hit the "problems" button and it should install. Unless you are out if space in /system - root explorer would also be able to tell you this.
Hi yeti.p , stringer7
Thanks a lot for the help..i'll try the aplharev.nl
I also tried installing it from titanium..and i was successful..but still i was not able to use certain apps that require bb as they were not able to find bb on my device.
Finallly i uninstalled titanium and tried installing all the bb versions from bb installer.
