are kernels specific to the Roms? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question on if a Rom is built using a kernel, is the rom built to be the best on that kernel(optomized) or will it run better on another kernel? I am running the people's rom v2.2 with the samuri-mtd kernel that was flashed with it.

Kernels aren't built for specific ROMs they are built for specific phones . However they are built for specific android versions. Like an ICS kernel won't boot on a GB kernel... for obvious reasons. So you can flash any GB kernel for any GB rom.

Thank you for the quick reply. So as long as I use the GB kernels I can try any of them out?

No. Only ones that use the bootclasspath and drivers for your specific ROM type such as Touchwiz or Cyanogenmod7.

Whoops... that slipped... forgot about that.

Currently the only choices are the Samurai kernel TPR came with, shadowkernel (either EL30 or FC09 versions will work but FC09 version still has no LED notifications I believe), Nubernel and CleanGB kernel.

What I mean is a ROM directly from the latest GB tmobile source not a ported GB/ICS ROM from another phone. I just feel that since its made for that phone it gonna be the most stable just like Bionix1.3.1 in my Vibrant. Of course I want one that has been tweaked and debloated with voodoo with the option to install a custom kernel.

Everyone has a different experience with the modems and the kernels too. You will have to experiment. Calkulin's GB 3.0 comes with a modified Rogue Gunslinger 1.4.1 kernel.
Located here are most of the Rogue stock and custom kernels:
http://www.android.net/forum/downloa...=&do=cat&id=20
Here are the custom rogue kernels that are missing, scroll down to -Archives-:

Most users prefer the custom kernels since they offer more support than the stock kernels.
Okay, let me experiment and get Back. Thanx

Can you recommend some roms/kernels?

I just ordered this phone, should be getting it sometime next week. BTW Im coming from the MyTouch 4g slide. If you recommend any roms or kernels please post the link. Thanks.

I recommend AOKP or CM9. Both are AOSP based with AOKP being closer to pure Android 4.0. That said, it helps to just try out what is available and see what works for you.

Is stock ROM official ICS update or GB?
I got this phone 2 months and bounced around between Darkside, stock ICS rooted, and AOKP. I've flashed Eugene's streamlined kernel to AOKP. And I think that's where I'm staying. I love the ui changes and inbuilt cpu control. And with Groove IP I can do without native wifi calling. My advice is to try them each for a few days, even ones I didn't mention like cm9, and decide what fits your needs.

That's because 0623-03 IS Build 39, assuming you are referring to Whitehawkx's AOKP. Hercules is officially supported by Team Kang now, so you can get Build 40 from here:

Kernel overclocking
I'm using Darkside TLLE4.V1 and the 3.0.8-perf-T989DTTLE4-CL579656 kernel. Way good. One question though: I come the cpu is not overclockable over 1.5 ? I thought this kernel was open to overclocking, I would like to boost it up to 1.8. Any ideas?
stay away from the Resurrection remix rom flashed it yesterday and it installed but when i rebooted my phone never came back on and it still wont do anything

it looks like there are a bunch of darkside roms/kernels. which one are you using?
This may have been addressed before but for some reason I can not find an answer. I have tried AOKP and CM9 and I am having problems with the external SD card not being recognized by several apps (beyondpod is the main one). There is a setting for using the external only but then most of my games (EA titles) will not open. Is there anything that can be done? I am currently using Chicago rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602332 and it seems to work correctly but I would like to start using the CM9 nightly builds. Thanks in advance.

To flash ICS or not?

Should I pull the trigger and flash ICS now with the release of source or should I wait a bit?

Honestly, I won't be using stock ICS because of the scroll speeds. It's just awful. I am running CM9 and, even before any source kernel changes, the battery life is great and it's totally stable.

My personal opinion, if you're new to ICS you may want to start on FF18 + rooted leak by sfhub.
This will get you either exactly to OTA or close enough, depending on if there were any differences in the OTA versus leak.
(It's still being checked at the moment.)
Then start reading on 2-3 ROMs - are the kernels made safe to avoid the eMMC lockup?
Most are now but doesn't hurt to verify.
Once you're up to date on the ROM then I'd say pull the trigger.
I'm planning on doing this myself pretty soon so just giving advice that I'm following on my own.

I think from what I've seen Times' AOKP and Agat are the only ones that have the source built kernels right now (and posted on a thread in the dev section.)... Agat says in his post that his kernel is only good on TW Roms for now.
I've personally run AOKP and CM9 for daily drivers (although I have not run the AOKP that he added the source kernel to yesterday yet.). You should be fine with either. Agat's kernel has the emmc bug fixed so it shouldn't brick. People have already confirmed that with Agat's Kernel, but I'm not sure if that was tackled in the AOKP kernel or not... Either way as long as you go back to the EL26-CWM 5.0.2.7 kernel you should be fine to flash from that.
EDIT: I just double checked the AOKP page and Times says that the EMMC brick bug is fixed.

Stable Jellybean ROM for Epic 4G??

Just wondering if there is a stable Jellybean ROM for Epic 4G? I would like to use one as a daily driver.

As of when I used it, it wasn't 100% stable. I think for now, you need to stick with CM9/7 or whatever you like. CM10 still has a bit to go to be a daily driver for everybody (some people are happy with it now, but many are waiting).

I wasn't referring to voodoo color I meant voodoo sound, I paid for the voodoo sound plus app and it's suppose to inject the code which make voodoo sound work for whatever Rom without the need of a required kernel.
And to answer your question about flashing the nexus modem, you don't just flash it it require a patch for the modem to be flashed.
There are two threads in the Development section that will guide to flashing not only the nexus modem, but any modem you want.

as long as you're willing to learn about modems and such you're good I'm pretty cautious about flashing anything on my phone, so trust me flashing modems is a piece of cake. You should really try CM10 the only problem I see with CM10 is not being able to switch roms until odining back stock.

I advise you to make a backup, wipe the usual data and such. CM10 does something with MTD I can't recall, so wiping data would be in your best interest. And don't be alarmed while flashing CM10 your phone reboots and you get stuck on the Cyanogen screen. Wait a minute or so, remove battery put it back in and go back to recovery wipe data again and reflash CM10. Make sure you have JB GAPPS too flash right after you flash CM10.
