Can you recommend some roms/kernels? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I just ordered this phone, should be getting it sometime next week. BTW Im coming from the MyTouch 4g slide. If you recommend any roms or kernels please post the link. Thanks.

I recommend AOKP or CM9. Both are AOSP based with AOKP being closer to pure Android 4.0. That said, it helps to just try out what is available and see what works for you.

Is stock ROM official ICS update or GB?

I got this phone 2 months and bounced around between Darkside, stock ICS rooted, and AOKP. I've flashed Eugene's streamlined kernel to AOKP. And I think that's where I'm staying. I love the ui changes and inbuilt cpu control. And with Groove IP I can do without native wifi calling. My advice is to try them each for a few days, even ones I didn't mention like cm9, and decide what fits your needs.

AOKP build 40 + Eugene's kernel is working beautifully for me

Thanks guys

I'm still looking for a link to Eugene's kernel... Is there anyone that could post one? Thanks

Eugene's Kernel is here:

I personally run his kernel on CM9 alpha 9. The phone is way too fast.

I'm struggling to figure out how the aokp builds work. I'm on 6/23-03 but in "about this phone " I get "build 39". I'd like to be up to date and can't quite understand it. Do you get it? And where did you find build 40?

+1 on that one for sure. I've run Darkside ROM/Kernel since I had Gingerbread.

yup darkside is definitely the way to go. awesome battery life and really stable.

That's because 0623-03 IS Build 39, assuming you are referring to Whitehawkx's AOKP. Hercules is officially supported by Team Kang now, so you can get Build 40 from here:

Kernel overclocking
I'm using Darkside TLLE4.V1 and the 3.0.8-perf-T989DTTLE4-CL579656 kernel. Way good. One question though: I come the cpu is not overclockable over 1.5 ? I thought this kernel was open to overclocking, I would like to boost it up to 1.8. Any ideas?

stay away from the Resurrection remix rom flashed it yesterday and it installed but when i rebooted my phone never came back on and it still wont do anything

it looks like there are a bunch of darkside roms/kernels. which one are you using?

This may have been addressed before but for some reason I can not find an answer. I have tried AOKP and CM9 and I am having problems with the external SD card not being recognized by several apps (beyondpod is the main one). There is a setting for using the external only but then most of my games (EA titles) will not open. Is there anything that can be done? I am currently using Chicago rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1602332 and it seems to work correctly but I would like to start using the CM9 nightly builds. Thanks in advance.

[Q] Best ROM for EPiC Touch?? Stable/battery life

Just got my wife an Epic Touch 4G, I wanted to install CM9 on it, but I don't see it anywhere? I want something stable, with good battery life. What ROMS do you recommend ? can be TW/AOSP, as long as its STABLE and everything works. Shes rocking stock ICS on it now.

I use that rom as my dd. Its calk's worked baked in to ff18 with some other stuff. Its almost stock feel. Most bloat removed. Ton of mods.
There is another awesome rom called blu kuban. Not sure if it fits your needs. Its super themed with awesome blue and black colors. Has its own kernel with a ton of cpu tweaks. Blu kuban is like the ultimate rom.

You could also try the "black" ROM, it's very stable and has a great battery life. It is off of ff18 right now but is going to move to fh13 soon.
Its funny how much this question gets asked. I would read up thoroughly on how to flash Roms and root or whatever it is you you want to do and go to the development section read about what is going on and how to install whatever ROM you want to try and try it, see how it works for you and if you don't like take it off. Trial and error is your best bet just make sure you aren't blindly flashing and installing stuff if you don't know what you are doing. Qbking77 has a lot of helpful videos on YouTube also.

The reason we started making our own ROMs was the instabilities, short-comings, and plain mistakes made by SamSprint in the stock ROMs.. you know, like the eMMC brick bug? That's a far cry from stable imo..

I wasn't referring to voodoo color I meant voodoo sound, I paid for the voodoo sound plus app and it's suppose to inject the code which make voodoo sound work for whatever Rom without the need of a required kernel.
And to answer your question about flashing the nexus modem, you don't just flash it it require a patch for the modem to be flashed.
There are two threads in the Development section that will guide to flashing not only the nexus modem, but any modem you want.

as long as you're willing to learn about modems and such you're good I'm pretty cautious about flashing anything on my phone, so trust me flashing modems is a piece of cake. You should really try CM10 the only problem I see with CM10 is not being able to switch roms until odining back stock.

I advise you to make a backup, wipe the usual data and such. CM10 does something with MTD I can't recall, so wiping data would be in your best interest. And don't be alarmed while flashing CM10 your phone reboots and you get stuck on the Cyanogen screen. Wait a minute or so, remove battery put it back in and go back to recovery wipe data again and reflash CM10. Make sure you have JB GAPPS too flash right after you flash CM10.

I am currently running binarybishop's 9/07 build. It is pretty smooth. The only bug I could find is that sometimes the phone turns off and to turn it back on you have to pull the battery. I think you could fix this by changing the minimum CPU frequencies. I have also heard great things about ericwills ROM. I tried it yesterday for a couple of minutes and it was very smooth and fast.

[Q] Jelly Bean Stable ROM for T989D Telus SIIX?

Hello,

No I have not. Is it stable ?
People wrote about SOD on the page too
Honestly, it's a hit or miss, mine is completely stable..so are some others. While others aren't. Don't know what the difference is but I'm starting to think that the devices are different in the inside. Maybe different manufacturers on certain parts? Who knows. So just try it out. The rr and sod is clearly present, so if that happens try another Rom

Try AOKP JB by TheLastSidekick Oct. 9 build. It is super stable for me. No bugs, SODs, RRs, etc. You could also try Dougshells AOKP ROM because AOKP by TLS is based off of it so it should be as stable as it.

To be honest, I dont mind even ICS but stable and bloat free

To avoid/minimize SOD's and RR's, don't forget to set governor to interactive and scheduler to deadline.
I've had the S2X since it came out. I'm running Dougshell's 10/10 build and haven't experienced a single SOD or RR. This is the first AOKP jb build I've used that doesn't have those issues. Solid daily driver.

Did you use TWRP as your recovery? if so, how did you load it on your phone? Ive tried doing it from GooManager but it wont work.
Also, should i go with the Stable AOKP ROM or is the nightly a better choice? the last stable was all the way back in July.

I used CWM 5.0.2.7
The stable AOKP build from July is based on ICS I believe. The nightlies are jb. Up to you there.

What jellybean ROM are you using? Why?

I am using Cm10. I heard it was very stable but I do not know much more about the different ROMs. I'm a neeewbie!

The CM10 nightlies are usually a little buggy. And I heard bluetooth doesn't work too often. I usually switch between CM10 and AOKP roms. Using LiquidSmooth right now just to try something different.

Does reflashing delete apps? If so what do you use to back up apps?

You don't have to wipe data if its the same rom, but I use Titanium Backup when switching to different roms.
Rom: LiquidSmooth RC9
Kernel: KT747
so far so good.
What jelly bean rom are you using? And why?
I am using cm10 stable and love it and the reason why is that I'm a newbie it is the one pour stock android I can get on my Samsung galaxy s3. I think my next phone will be the google nexus 5 when ever that comes out or a new galaxy nexus.
I'm using the latest cm10 nightly and it has some glitches here and there but it's solid for most part.
I'm using Serenity. It's a port of JB from the Galaxy Note II.
Why this one and not something else? I wanted to keep the Touchwiz feel for a while longer and I've used Serenity ROMs in the past on a different device.
Using CM10. Bass over bluetooth doesn't work so I dropped back to an older build. Even the older ones still work fine. Running leankernel. Couldn't be happier with my phone!

I tried to find something that really put this in layman's terms. This article, I think, will tell you exactly what you want to know. Easy peasy http://www.vikitech.com/8239/beginners-guide-android-kernels

You did install the kernel, you just didnt know it. The kernel gets installed with the ROM. But you can flash a different kernel at some other point if you want to. I generally find the stock kernels work well for me

I'm running BlackBean with LeanKernel all apps inverted along with inverted JB 4.2 keyboard. Why? I used BlackBean on my old Nexus S, inverted stuff saves a ton of battery life on our SAMOLED screens, the combo is overall damn smooth and the kernel also helps to save that battery life while maintaining buttery smoothness. Couldn't be happier.
LiquidSmooth RC9 with leankernel. Seems to be working pretty good so far. A couple of complaints here and there (had an issue with phone crashing every time I received a call, some minor annoyances with music playback) but for the most part it's very speedy and stable.
