[Q] How to super Optimized Tmo Sammy S2 for best battery performace?

So I switched from the iphone with edge to the Tmo S2 with Jugg 5.0 ROM + Go Launcher. I really appreciate the 4g speed. However, the overall experience is not as smooth as the iphone and the battery life sucks big time. I normally have to constantly plug the phone in whenever I can. It works ok when I'm at work but when I'm out all day my battery won't last more than half a day. It's so bad to the extent that I have to turn off my phone and turn on when I need to call or text so I can keep the phone alive the whole day. I tried Juice Defender but it didn't help my battery at all.
Yesterday I spent a few hours on XDA and I came up with these solution to my battery problem:
+DarkSide Digital Warfare v2.7 ROM (couldn't find 2.5.1 version)
+Flash Synergy Kernel over (supposed to give better battery)
+SetCPU app (auto detection)
+Zeam launcher
So far, it seems to be better on the battery. Is there anything else I could add to make my battery last longer? I need the phone to last at least the whole day without charge. I'm constantly on 4g looking up stocks, reading news, email, google voice, grooveip, facebook, turn by turn navigation, music, netflix, youtube ...
Thanks,
Welcome to Android.
From what it appears, you seem to be a heavy user. The most you can get out of a Android device with heavy usage is 3/4 of a day (14-18hrs) tops.
You have 2 choices, either you travel with the power cord not to far away and plug it when you need it or you invest a whooping 10$ and buy another battery.
There are tricks to keeping your battery healthy but lasting all day as a heavy user will be very difficult.
If this is a new phone it takes a week or so for the battery to settle in a hold a charge well. After a week or so you'll notice your battery is lasting longer. Also make sure that nothing is keeping your phone awake 100%. Some apps don't play nice and cause issues. Welcome to Android.
Note: navigation kills battery fast, when your using it try to plug into a car charger or something.

There are a lot of things you can do to improve battery.
1. Juice Defender (which you say you have already tried)
2. Limit the number of widgets you run or run no widgets like I do
3. Turn the screen brightness down all the way
4. Don't use Live Wallpaper, also, try to pick a dark coloured wallpaper since white/light colours seem to use up more battery.
5. Uninstall apps you don't use.
6. Turn off GPS unless you need to use it.
7. Turn off sync completely or only have your gmail sync. I don't need to be notified when I get a facebook message so I don't need it syncing every few minutes or every hour, I can check that manually myself.
8. Turn off animations.
9. Close background apps that are running that you aren't using.
10. Use Task Manager to close open apps when you are done using it. Task Manger is your friend.
11. Enable Power Saver Mode.
etc etc.
Those are the main things that I tend to do. I plug my phone in every night before I go to bed as well so I am not sure how long my battery actually lasts. But typically after 16hrs of use I still have 60% battery when I go to bed.
Currently my phone has been on for 7hrs 15mins and I have 87% battery. So you can do the math. I am not as heavy a user as you seem to be, but hope this helps. Peace.
Check out this video it helps show you how to save battery. Enjoy!
Thanks for the inputs guys. I should have said I was looking for Rom/Mod/Scripts/Apps... that can be flashed onto the rooted phone. I have done all the basic battery saving housekeepings as listed by Chochiwpg.

You could run Juggernaut with Faux Kernel and Gideon's battery scripts. Or Telus T989D stock ROM lightly tweaked with same kernel and script. Got good results on those as well. Good luck.
Btw, has anyone had tremendous increase in battery life using the after market extended battery?
Thanks,

If you are talking about extended batteries that don't require a custom enlarged back cover, you will not get the battery increase that you are looking for, not even close. I cannot speak for the heavy duty ones that require an enlarged back as I do not own one
Gideon's scripts are great with Juggs. Underclock it as well like 384-1080 is a great setting. Also let die all the way down and charge all the way up and repeat for a few cycles. And don't stare at your phone every few seconds either lol! Another thing are the notification lighting buttons at the bottom. Drop to 1.5 seconds.

I have the extended 3800mah battery. It's insanely fat and makes the phone look hideous. On top of that I really don't feel like the battery lasts all that long at all. It's in my pocket all day at school and by 3:30 I'm at 35%. This thing cost me 65$. Total ripoff. I'd suggest spending 20$ and buying two more regular batteries. See what that does for you all

A few things you can do on ANY ROM to improve battery life.
*) Decrease screen timeout to the lowest possible setting.
*) Adjust screen brightness to the lowest level you can tolerate.
*) Decrease the backlight key timeout to the lowest setting ( or off if you have the option )
*) Be sure to only have wifi and gps on if you are using them.
Those will help quite a bit in general however, a ROM like Juggs is meant to really take advantage of the power of your device so its probably wise to move to a different one if max battery is your goal. I love Juggs but had to move on to the AOSP stuff. Also, heed the advice above, allow the ROM a few days to "settle" before making a switch or even a judgement of its performance.
Thanks for the replies guys. So my phone lasted for 9hrs today which is a little bit of improvement. I was streaming netflix for half an hr on the train on the way back home so that may have drained the battery. I have just installed JD, will post back how it goes tomorrow.
So the extended battery is a no go eh. I really don't want to lug around a few extra batteries. I want to carry as little as possible. I normally carry my phone and my ipad but now I tend to not use the ipad much now because the S2 screen is pretty gigantic for a phone.

I know the point was already made but just to reiterate, you can get 2 Anker extended batteries (same size as regular battery) and a universal charger for like $20. This will leave you with three batteries. One for the charger, one for the pocket, and one for the phone. With this system its pretty easy to always have one full battery ready to go and one charging. The battery is small and can just go in your pocket, or maybe even in your wallet depending on your preferences. It solves the problem completely. I don't think you are going to do much better because if you are a heavy user then your battery is going to be used because your phone isn't going to be sleeping.
Good luck.

If you read my post above. I'm against the idea lugging around too many things. It's also a hassle to swap the battery and keep them all charged. I may be a heavy user but it's not like I use the phone all the time. I use the phone heavily early in the morning on the way to work and after 5pm on the way home after work. The commute each way is roughly 45 mins. In between the commutes i make a few calls and texts through GV. I don't think i'm that of a really heavy user.
Anyway, it's noon and I'm at 75% with JD on and setCPU to 384-1084mhz which is pretty promising.
Questions go in the Q&A section
Since you changed kernals, you aren't going to benefit from TDJ's battsaver script you can use with the stock 2.7 kernal.
Go lower on the max frequency. Something below 800 mhz. Setting a negative gloval mV doesn't hurt, and if you can get to -62.5, that's great.
Oh, and when using data, try GSM only...
To be honest, the larger problem with battery life is typically the user. There's no real magic on making the phone last longer other than using it less. If you're going to be power using the hell out of it by using 4g for hours streaming media, your battery is going to be ****.

Don't you think it is ironic for me to switch from the iphone to the S2 because I couldn't stand the slow 2g Edge connection then have to lower data speed to GSM (2g) just so I can use the S2 long enough?
I think the S2 is one heck of a device but the OS and Apps are not running very efficiently.
I tried the ICS ROM ARKSIDE.UCLE2:: x[BETA07.1] in the last 2 days with setCPU at 384-1026Mhz. I have had great battery life. I got home at 12 am yesterday with a 2% battery. Today it's been 7 hrs on battery and my battery is at 70%. I don't know if it is the ROM, setCPU or a combination of the two but I'm pretty happy with the phone right now. ICS is awesome too.
I highly recommend that solution to anyone having a short battery life problem with their S2.
It is a little ironic since you did bring up the comparison. What I was attempting to do was to bring the phone more into spec of an iphone to get similar battery life. You're probably going to even get better runtimes due to the battery having a much larger capacity and better screen technology. All that superior hardware packed in the t989 is going to need more juice to run.
It's great you're getting good runtimes now. From my personal experience, once I drop down to the single digit percentages, it starts lasting a lot longer per percent. If you wanted to squeeze all you can from the device, those 2000mah aftermarket cells might add another 15~30 minutes.

Power Saving app?

Should I use power saving app for my One X such as Juice Defender? I heard some people saying that using this kind of app will make my phone's life shorter or some thing similar. And will this app help my phone improve my battery life a lot? Thanks

Android is good at managing background tasks etc. Don't use a task killer, it can prevent sleeping of the phone, and constantly kill things that need to be running... Android will start it up again, which is more costly than leaving it running.
Some of these apps can turn WiFi or data on and off according to a schedule, which can be useful, but I just leave mine on all the time. I find the screen to be the biggest drain by far.
My WiFi is at 4% and cell standby at 3%, screen is at 71%.
I'd not recommend. Just download betterbatterystats and keep an eye using that app to see if anything is keeping your phone awake. Remember these are powerhouse phones and not like ordinary dumb phones so expect battery life not to be great.
Simple measures such as keeping brightness low, turning off data when not needed, keeping sync to minimal and such will greater battery life but then things out of our control like poor signal will dampen the battery.

Yeah but some users report that they have boosted their battery life to 1,5x or even more, some even got 2,0x and that's very amazing in my point of view. Well if you don't use the screen... Yeah, standby in airplane mode is likely to be much longer than standby with a useful data connection, synched emails etc.

I've used JuiceDefender Ultimate on my XE and the app's stats suggested 2.0x power saving. I don't know quite how accurate that really is though. I've just installed it again on my One X.
In my experience, those apps just make your battery life worse. They run in the background, causing the processor to run faster, do more cycles which ultimately leads to using up more power. If you want to save your battery life, set your brightness to as bright as you need it to be, not more. Turn off WiFi and/or Data if you don't use it. Turn off GPS if you don't use it. Kill the apps in task switcher because they usually run in the background as well and eat up your battery life.
I was under the impression that you can leave GPS enabled in the settings, as it'll only be used when an app requests it?

Yeah that's true from my experiences. Minimal battery drain when turned on. I think it's to avoid unnecessary usage like weather apps updating every hour or so whilst making use of the GPS. But it shouldn't have such an impact on battery drain unless your using GPS for long periods such as navigation.

[Q] taker vs juicedefender

which one is better for battery saving?
tasker seem to have more option/variety but too many option/variety can be a problem sometimes. and there alot more you can do with tasker so that a bonus
juicedefender is mainly for battery saving but the options can get quite confusing.
any good tasker profile for battery saving? or what do you use your tasker for?
any good setup for juicedefender?

in all honesty, juice defender is not needed. tasker on the other hand i dont think you need to use for battery savings. if you're on a custom rom and you dont like the battery life, flash a new kernel. i did that and since then i've not used juice defender since its not needed and battery is great (leankernel 5.4 on liquidsmooth v2.2 4.2.2) :good:
JuiceDefender doesn't even work on the new JB builds. Even when it was working, it was mediocre on a good day.
Tasker, on the other hand, is an amazing application. But don't bother with trying to save battery with it, though.
I'm pretty sure die hard battery savers don't use "battery saving" apps. The only apps they'll really use are kernel and voltage controllers. Even then, there's a list of other factors that contribute to battery, from screen brightness, use, having dark themes, and other stuff. Additionally, being in an area with GOOD coverage will save you battery as well.
Things like juice defender as far as I'm concerned are pointless gimmicks, like virus scanners and such.
would underclocking or undervolting help? and how to go about it?
Don't bother with that either. If you are having battery problems get BetterBatteryStats from the party store.
Honestly if you want more battery the buy an extended battery or the same size battery with more capacity than the stock 2100 mAh

You cannot get more capacity out of the same size for it to be noticeable...The only time it would ever be 1% more is if the China after market batteries had thinner battery walls of which would be likely unsafe for that extra few mAh in capacity...so even China doesnt do it (they dont care about your capacity). OEM is the max capacity you can have for a stock size. JD does help if you configure it right using the advanced settings. Also, it only helps you when your phone is off.
Battery savers never worked for me. But there is one app called GREENIFY (it's a root app) which hibernates the apps that normally would run in the background and saves me TONS of battery power! Best battery saving app I've ever used. Well worth the investment!

[Q] Battery life

Hello.
I was wondering if my battery life is low or not, so I want to know what your battery life is guyz.
My battery would last like 12hs with wifi always on and facebook, some music here and then and youtube. is it a normal consumption ?
There are so many variables that come into play with battery life that is nearly impossible to quantify what sort of battery life someone should be getting. Screen on time, brightness settings, radios used, reception, usage patterns, apps running in the background....tons of things that will be different from person to person. Also, the actual battery itself comes into play with how well it can hold a charge.
As long as you are happy with your battery situation, all is well. If not, perhaps look into what is using your battery. Better Battery Stats can potentially help you narrow down where things on the software end are draining your battery.

G Pro Kitkat Battery hogs

is it just me or is the kitkat ROM really sucks----battery pretty well?
I also notice that the CPU usage does not drop to 20 percent idle but when I used other ROM (JB based) it becomes 5 percent.
RAM usage is good but I think it hogs the CPU. I used cpuz on measuring the cpu usage

Where can I get the JB rom for OGP?
For me, Android was best at JB and went backwards with KK.
Yes, I've noticed absolutely horrible battery life with KK. KK just feels like it is several different parts all just thrown together.
The only reason I think is that theoretically JB uses more battery is that the system uses more voltage than the kitkat. however, what's less voltage use if the CPU is always busy and wakeups are just everywhere.
Hi guys, maybe you could post in some battery stats so we could know more about whats draining your battery in particular and suggest some fixes. I've actually experienced the opposite with kitkat-battery life for me improved. There was even an instance that I got the phone to last 30 hours, with 5 hours, 48 mins. screen. On another instance I got 15 hours life and 5 hours 25 mins screen on. I just lost the screenshots as I had to reflash stock when i was doing some G3 mods., but nevertheless i could post some new ones.
I value batter life was well and i'm curious to see how yours could be improved too..

What a battery life. 15 hours screen time?
how can we accurately measure? because I only use CPU-Z and installed DS battery saver to save power. right now it only used 2% of my battery during the night. (from 1:45 - 5:50am)
I see. can you tell me what app should I use to determine CPU usage of each app/service?

No, my battery lasted 15 hours, and my screen-on time (total time i spent using the phone) was 5+ hours coz i basically used my phone then for gaming the whole day I suggest you download gsam battery monitor app (it also has a temperature_bat. Usage graph), as well as wakelock detector. Another alternative would be better battery stats. What you would need to observe would be the apps and wakelocks draining your battery both when you are using your phone, and also when its idle.
I also notice that battery capacity is 2A in which it should be 3.140A right?
this shows on kitKat but on jellybean, it's 3.140A again.
is there something wrong with the detection of battery capacity?

What happened was that in kitkat, the permisssions required to be able to access battery stat files changed. Thus, apps w/c could freely access the batter stats in JB cannot gain complete access in Kitkat. This is the case for some battery monitor apps w/c now have lesser accuracy in reporting battery. No worries though, as there are means to bypass this problem. If you have xposed you could install a module for this. Also, some apps like gsam battery monitor come with a separate root companion app. Once you install those batter stats will be accurate.
Here's a screenshot of my battery stats for today..might not be 5+ hrs of screen on as i did a lot of rebooting today (themed with g3 tweaksbox). Nevertheless, this is just to show that kitkat has the potential to provide good battery life. Also enclosed is a screenshot of one of the battery apps i use, gsam.
Hey everybody! I have some findings I absolutely must share so you can benefit as well.
I've been doing some tinkering and I've find a way to significantly increase battery life on the OGP.
First thing you'll want to do is put your phone into airplane mode.
Second, turn your screen brightness down as low as it will go. I mean, all of the way down.
Third, don't play any games on your phone.
Try those three tweaks and see what kind of battery improvement you get.
Unfortunately, Camera has stopped.

Just so you know, first my cell radio and wifi were both on the whole time. Second, i was on auto brightness the whole time. Third, i played clash of clans as you see in there.
If you have not done this already, adjust your cpu to save your battery juice. Set the cpu governor to powersaver or interactive mode if you just using the phone to send msg and make calls. I let my phone run on msm-dvcs and when I'm not plug in. Check out ROM toolbox if you're rooted. Seriously folks, instead of complaint about how much the roms suck the juice, try these different ways to see they make any difference for you.

I found a way to make my phone last a long time. I just turn my phone off and don't use it. I wish I would have though of this sooner.
