it depends on what you want out of the rom. as far as stability goes, cm9 is the most stable

ICS MIUI is stable as well. Feels like having a new phone

Got CM9 but not a ftf file!?!
I need a file FlashTool can use with CM9 ICS for the R800at. Unable to get bootloader to unlock. Got SIM unlocked (via AT&T - told them it was unsupported now that ICS is off the table, they caved even though I have a contract).
Was able to flash and root. Still no luck with the boot loader. CW does not support the Play and have not figured out a way around AT&T's death hold on the boot loader.
Thanks for any help you can give.

cm9 will not work on a locked bootloader, it's impossible since you have to flash a kernel. You'll need to pay to get your bootloader unlocked to install ANY kind of ics rom

the DarkForest Rom is a not bad for AOSP

You can use Gin2ICS for the ICS look and feel. I haven't tried it though.

[Q] advice needed about updating to ics

sorry if i posted in wrong place...
but i am really confused whether to update my arc s(android version 2.3.4, kernel 2.6.32.9-perf)
some say its better in performance with good battery and cool new features
some say its laggy and poor camera and not good
what shall i do?? i cannot find a good review with pros and cons on ics in arc s....
thanks inadvance

The same as everyone else, make your own mind up.
i just wanna know is it possible to revert back to official gb..??
or after updating ics with acustom rom can arc s have all ics features plus smooth performance??
well on icS everything is smooth except few games..if u are a hardcore gamer then btr stick with gb..or else feel free to try ics
u can always go back to GB
the whole ROM thing is kinda "YMMV" - it works great for some, but doesn't for someone else. Try some popular ROM and kernel and find out what works best.

you can definitely return back to gb if you have an unlocked bootloader. and why dont you consider installing custom kernels or roms on your phone?
Yes ICS is really cool . iam runing on ICS 4.0.4 on my ARC S.full stock. i did not unlock my bootloader yet since i just bought it recently (still have my warranty) . i suggest u go for the Jump. ICS is real smooth. Hey if u Jump u can always Fall back . u can return to GB anytime u want. its your Handset, it's your decision.with a little help from Everyone here WE can FLY UP & Down as we Wish , after all it's our wings.:silly::highfive:
Go ahead and update to ICS its smooth and good. Then dont worry about going back to GB, its very easy and YOU DONT NEED TO UNLOCK BOOT LOADER. There is a tool called flashtool you can use it and flash any Sony offical ROM on to your phone. If you want more internal memory you can root your phone and get rid of unwanted apps. A little advice, use Sony Update service to update your phone not PC Companion. When updating through SUS choose to erase all and install update. it makes the phone smooth. Just updating using PC Companion dont erase data and you will experience a some lag.

You can return to stock GB even with a locked bootloader (as I did). Just flash a SE stock GB ROM using Flashtool.
In regard to the original question, in my humble opinion, the performance drawback of ICS on Xperia Arc S and the buggy video shooting capability could not be outweighed by the advantages of ICS (which are debatable; one that stuck with me was the ability to dictate to the phone continuously, can hardly remember any other advantage at all, apart from the allegedly improved photo quality). So, in short, ICS was a pain in the ass for me, I'm back to Gingerbread and cannot believe this is the same sluggish and inoperable phone it was under ICS.
Your mileage may vary, and given that you can revert back to GB safely, it makes sense to try ICS for yourself and decide.

Root your phone. (There are plenty of threads on that already).
Get Link2SD. See it up using XperiaBlog's guide. No more issues with low memory.
Get Titanium Backup. Helps you remove even those hard to remove apps.

Two Questions about two Play ROMS

Ok, i would asked in the ROMs thread but it seems i don't have permissions just yet, here it goes...
It's actually about 3 ROMS but it involves only 2 questions, First...
Could it be possible to install THIS which is the WALKMAN UI for GB in the Gin2JellyBean 1.8.1(already installed on my phone)?????
And Second...
Trying to install [ROM][GSM][XperiaPlay Ice Cream Pureness][ver.2.1][Based on stock 4.0.4 FW][17.08.12] i came with an MD5 mismatch error when installing(yes i have a locked bootloader) and i think it is because it tries to install over a GB rom, also reading i found that it might be possible to install it if somehow we could manage to install an ICS rom prior to installing the XP ICP 2.1 ROM, my question is... if i install Markphytons ICS 4.0.4 Sony Orginal Rom Xperia S Features for Xperia Play could it be possible to make this ICP 2.1 work on the Play? or is there a known way to bypass or fix the MD5 mismatch error?
Thank you all so much :fingers-crossed:
lol i got a locked bootloader too. i tried flashing ice cream pureness and i softbricked my pnone. but i fixed it with flashtool. the reason why thats happening is because u cant flash an ics rom over a gb kernel
That's my point, if i install the Markphytons ICS 4.0.4 rom, which is an ICS rom, the ICP 2.1 would work installing over it??????? the only problems with Markphytons ICS rom are the camera and the pad.

Here is a real sugestion for you why don't you unlock your bootloader and avoid any of the "hassles" your experienceing now. About Markphytons bootloader locked rom it obviously still has bugs that needs fixing. Otherwise you would be waiting for a fix and you would flashing random roms which obviously will not work on your device. (Don't even bother flashing "custom roms" unless your bootloader is unlocked)
bootloader unlock allowed-No... That's why, i think it's something called sim locked or something similar

Flashing a stock ftf also flashes the included kernel. If you're still struggling with video tutorials or guides then someone else will have to assist as I'm not here to spoon feed for the reason stated in the second line of my guide.

heres my screenshot.
BTW if there is someone still a noob like me in flashing heres the simplest vid that i found and it work for me, you should have all drivers installed on your pc
do not release the back button until flashing is finished and not all back button are on the right side as seen on flashtool

Advice on updating

Hey everyone, so I've had my Xperia Arc for nearly 2 years and it's the same android (2.3.4). It's recently started to lag like crazy and freeze a lot so I've been thinking about upgrading to a better rom. I've used the eroot method with one click to root it.I've got superuser access.
Will I able be able to upgrade straight to Xperia Ultimate HD?
I've been reading tutorials and youtubing for hours but it's still going over my head. Any simple written instructions or answers would help.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Yes, kernel is a must. Without the kernel, your phone won't run properly.
As for the Lupus kernel, it is a custom kernel and so should be flashed via fastboot, if you have unlocked your bootloader beforehand.

Not all kernels need unlocked bootloader. You can still flash stock kernels via flashtool with locked bootloader. Only custom kernels like CM kernels need unlocked bootloader to flash.

Walkman was never officially included in 2011 Xperia devices. But I see more devs making ports for ICS. As for GB and ICS, they both have advantages and disadvantages. GB favors performance but lacks many features. ICS has more features but lags more than GB.

Flashing Kernel

Hello and Good day (again),
I'm very sorry for multi-posting but I would just like to ask if there is any way of flashing the kernel without using fastboot?!, my phones bootloader is unlocked but my network carrier is locked, that's why I can't access fastboot.
Specifications:

Carrier: AT&T
Rooted: Yes
Recovery: CWM
Bootloader Status: Unlocked (Using Testpoint Method)
ROM: Stock ROM (Xperia Play_3.0.1.B.0.270_ATT.ftf)

Yea, Version 13 of lupus Kernel its right their, its under the Jellybean Section(as its only works for JB ROMs).
Yes your Bootloader is Unlock permanently. You can change ROMs, Kernels and even go back to the Stock ROM and your Bootloader will stay Unlocked.

You can find a lot of ROMs under the Android Development section of the Xperia Play Sub-Forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-play/development
My Personal favorite JB ROMs are this ones(if you want to try them out):
[ROM][GSM+CDMA][Play+Neo L]Slimbean 5.1.1[MULTIBOOT][02-03-2014]
[ROM][GSM][CDMA][CM10][MULTIBOOT][NEOL+PLAY]Racing SPEED EDITION EOL[12/02/2014]
If you really are looking for the best gaming performance then I recommend sticking to Gingerbread.
And yes there is a Kitkat ROM but a lot of things don't work on it yet like WiFi and the Camera.

Yea, you will probably need to try out different ROMs to see which one fits your needs the best. The 720p and 480p are the camera resolutions, if you use a 480p Kernel you will get more Free RAM.
I have no problem answering your questions, just remember to click on the "Thanks" button but you can probably find the answer faster if you search instead of waiting for some one to reply. There is even a search bar if you only want to search on this Thread(on the right side).

Yea, you will probably need to try out different ROMs to see which one fits your needs the best. The 720p and 480p are the camera resolutions, if you use a 480p Kernel you will get more Free RAM.

Oh I see, meaning 720p eats more RAM than the 480p? If so then I think I'll go with 480p . Yep, I always give proper credits to the one's that help me , I would also like to thank you rather than just hit the Thanks button . And a few last questions, is it best to use Lupus Kernel or Turbo on a JB ROM? And I've seen this:
* Flash FTF 62 or 79,if already have it,no need.
Does that mean that I have to find a suitable .62 or .79 Stock ROM for my device since I'm on .270 or should I should just flash the Kernel and ROM directly?

Yes, 720p eats more RAM then 480p. Your welcome . I don't know which one is best (and technically asking whats the best ROM/Kernel is not allowed in XDA), I mostly used Lupus Kernel but Turbo Kernel does have the ability to multiboot so its kind of a preference thing.
Oh, I just noticed you have the the R800at which means your phone is CDMA. I really cant help you much with this since I know very little when it comes to the CDMA model of the Xperia Play. Your going to have to do some research. What I know is that there should be no problem with the Kernels, what you need to look for is that the ROM you want to install on your Phone is made for the CDMA model of the Xperia Play(it usually states it on the tittle).

My phone is actually GSM , and about my last question, do you actually need to flash .62 or .79 before you flash the ROM?

I don't think you really need it, but if you can, flash it just in case.
