Lumia 900 and Microsoft Sync in FORD Vehicles - Nokia Lumia 900

Thought I would pass along that the phone does not work with the 2012 Microsoft Ford Sync module when plugged into USB.
It's unfortunate because every other phone works just fine when connected through the USB port to play audio.
I ended up emailing Microsoft about it and sure enough the phone is not compatible with the SYNC platform. Older WP seem to work, just not the Lumia.
Unfortunately my contact at Microsoft suggested using Bluetooth, which would normally be OK except you can't use any of the SYNC features like asking it to play by artist, play list, etc.
Thought I would pass this along for anyone who owns a Ford with the SYNC module and is thinking of getting the Lumia 900.

I had the same problem. Not using Microsoft Sync though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1607596
I contacted Nokia and they told me the same thing you said. lol
Pretty disappointing that it doesn't work through USB, so I'm back to using my iPhone.

I just found it ironic that a Microsoft Phone didn't work with a Microsoft SYNC module in a car.. Oh well.

This seems unlikely. Here is a blog post from November 2011...
USB. Windows Phone does not yet support USB audio-out, I believe. At least I’ve not gotten it to work. However, I know that Microsoft is using USB audio- and video-out with their own devices, in fact, that’s how they’re doing all of their onstage public demos. This internally developed software is very buggy and it’s not clear what form it will take when it reaches the public, but I’ve been told it’s coming.

Maybe Windows Phone 8 will remedy the situation. I know I had a Windows Mobile phone and I had a usb cable that did video out. I haven't seen anything like that with Windows Phone.
So my theory is Ford sync works fine. Zune players work fine. It's just that Windows Phone doesn't have a stable USB audio out function... yet.

I realize this may not be about USB audio connection, but why not use bluetooth? It works perfectly with Ford Sync. Unless you're vehicle doesn't have bluetooth (thought all SYNC) units had this, it's one less wire to plug/unplug unless you want to charge the phone. In that case, USB connect to USB connector in car (e.g., 2012 Ford Focus SLE). After pairing it shows battery level and signal strength on the car's info panel. Audio paddles on steering wheel control volume, next/last track, and phone commands.
FWIW, first time I attempted pairing it showed as 'headphones'. I turned off WP bluetooth and then on again. This time, the Lumia 900 showed up as "SYNC". Then phonebook uploaded after securing my permission.
Hope this is helpful
Cheers

In general blue tooth sound quality sucks compared to USB audio. Plus it's nice to charge your phone while listening.

This and you also cannot fully utilize the Sync voice ommands to play lists, artists, etc.

I've noticed that some time ago, BUT I DID NOT ANNOY ME AS MUCH AS IT ANNOYS ME after reading this:

Mr. Ballmer,
Hopefully this will get to you. Your team deserves credit for producing an excellent product in the newest version of Windows Phone. Yes, I am writing from my MacBook Pro. And I have been a fairly loyal Apple customer over the years. However, I recently bought a Nokia Lumia 900 and intend on keeping it. For full disclosure, I was sure to make sure it could be returned after a dismal experience with an Android phone.
My reasons for switching are:
bla bla bla blahhhh
Simplicity. My family owns five vehicles, including two Fords with Sync. The 4S didn’t support all functions in any of them. My Nokia 900 was flawless out of the box. It was refreshing to have something that just worked. I cannot afford to have my primary means of communication be a science experiment.
bla bla bla
Best regards,

I guess Scott G. is from another dimension.

I have a 2012 Mustang GT
I use it with BT and everything seems to play nice. Have not tried to tell it to find an artist or what not but changing songs and pausing seem to work fine.

Did you use USB or bluetooth?

Positive Experience
Drove 1800 miles in 2012 Focus SEL these past two weeks. Bluetooth audio was exceptional (most mp3's are 320 Kbps, WMA's off Zune Music Pass are 192 Kbps). Love how music paused with incoming text, requests permission to read the text, then queries whether to reply or finish. All hands free. Just like phone post phone call, music resumes when task completed. Connected to built-in USB for power charging only. Would really like to see Zune song list transfer to the SYNC and allow voice activated album/playlist/artist search. As it is, I used the shuffle (play music) mode most often.
Couple of notes (for those renting cars with Sync): from menu button, make sure there are no existing devices. Does not sync with multiple phones. Also may want to remove your device from the auto before turning it in.
Nokia drive worked flawlessly driving through 8 East coast states.
YMMV

Dash sync solutions with Vista or Mac

I have a T-mobile Dash that I am very happy with but am shopping for a new laptop. I am considering 2 laptops running Vista (Dell XPS 1330 and a Toshiba Protege R500)and the 13' Macbook. My concern is being able to sync up contacts and calender. I am currently syncing to Outlook on my laptop running XP. I am not sure which would be easier to sync my Dash with. I have heard the problems with Vista and Mobile Device Center, and have know that there is software that allows syncing with a mac. I am mainly concerned with being able to sync my contacts and calender, everything else is secondary.
My options seem to be basically,
Deal with WMDC on Vista,
Use software such as missing sync to sync to the mac,
run xp on parallels to sync with outlook via active sync.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I need microsoft office for compatibility with the computers at school for projects etc, so I have outlook but use it only for contacts and calenders, not email.
Thanks,
Bryan
well, you could start by getting a laptop with Vista on it, and immeditealy re-format it XP...which should be the default choice if you ask me

Yep unfortunately Vista isn't up to par with windows mobile compatibility as yet. I got a MacBook Pro and an iPhone but yes you could use the missing sync and a MacBook. I haven't used it personally but I've heard good reports. Get the Mac first and you'll love its philosophy so much I bet you get an iPhone.
I use missing sync with my Imac and it's great.
How to get ahold of a copy of XP
How hard is it to get a copy of XP to replace Vista? That would be an ideal solution. No new software to buy as the software that I have would need I have already. If XP was offered as the OS on one of the windows laptops I would not be tempted by the mac. I am happy with my XP laptop now and am just looking for something smaller and more portable.
I phone
Indiekiduk,
I would love to get an apple SMARTPHONE. If apple released a 3G iphone and opened it up to third party apps i would consider it. I was really looking forward to the potential that the Iphone had, but am extremely disappointed with the current version. If apple released a smartphone with the capabilities of a WM phone then I would be tempted. I work for a cell phone company that sells Verizon, ATT, and T-Mobile. I would consider ATT service for an apple smartphone, not the current entertainment phone.
It has WiFi that goes faster than WM and can run 3rd party apps. Yes GPRS is a little slower than 3G and it takes a small bit of effort to set it up to install the installer which lets you install the 3rd party apps from one tap, but overall the iphone is leagues above a windows mobile. The interface is stunning, so intuitive and a joy to use. The device is sleek and the hardware is the most powerful ever in a phone, multi-touch screen, orientation sensor, one button on the headset for pause music, skip song, answer and hang calls, it even has a 3D graphics accelerator!! It has a full web browser, pages look just like your laptop, double tap columns of text to zoom to them, supports javascript, ajax, animations, more people are browsing on the iphone than windows 98 and Windows mobile combined in the latest stats! I'm only touching on the features here.
Here is the installer:

Here are some other things to get excited about!
http://cre.ations.net/creation/dock
http://navizon.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/09/a-version-of-na.html
Honestly man, windows mobile is up **** creek.
You can use the iPhone on T-Mobile if you unlock it, either using the freeware AnySim (in installer) or using www.stealthsim.com (the latest iphones require this method at present). If you work for a cell phone company this should be trivial for you.
Not about Iphone
Im glad the Iphone works for you, but it does not offer anything that would make me spend the money for one at this point. I know that there is unlocking software and applications out there, but it is a lot of trouble to go through for an expensive phone. If I were going to spend that kind of money right now i would probably but an unlocked Kaiser. Like i said, if apple brought out a true smartphone i would be seriously interested, rigth now there are just too many drawbacks for me.
The way apple has treated the iPhone actually makes me want to buy a mac less (and certainly not right before Macworld). I have not been impressed by the way they have handled the iphone, but I am not really impressed with Vista either. If microsoft had not messed up Vista and WMDC then I would not be considering switching to a mac, I would just adjust to vista.
If I switched phones right now it would probably be to a BB Curve, as UMA (hot spot at home) calling would be a a good feature for me.

Eh? The Kaiser is twice the price of the iphone! $800 compared with $400. Here are more apps to wet your appetite!
http://lifehacker.com/339834/the-20-best-iphone-and-ipod-touch-applications
I know its a tough decision moving from something you know to something new. But honestly, owning a Mac will blow you away and your only frustration will be why you didn't get one sooner!
I know that the Kaiser is expensive but it lines up better with what I need in a phone.
If I went to an I phone I would lose
Push email (WM6 push email with hotmail) and easy setup of gmail
Hardware keyboard, ( after spending some time with a friends iPhone this is fairly neutral, i prefer a hardware keyboard but the iPhone keyboard is workable)
MMS, (I send enough picture messages to my wife that I would miss this ability)
If I unlocked it to use on my T-mobile dealer line then I would not be able to update to the newer versions of the software as they come out without locking the phone again until the software has been hacked again. Has 1.1.2 been fully unlocked for both applications and sim?
Indiekiduk, this has me rethinking how what i would really miss if I went to an Iphone so keep the ideas coming
Thanks
Vista and Dash will not exchange passkeys
So I have given up on getting the toshiba BT stack to play nicely with my device, and have opted to used the default vista drivers. All this to simply get active sync to work via bluetooth.
I have been able to pair the two devices, but when it comes time to sync... regardless of what I use as a passkey, I always get a failure message from vista. Passkey was not exchanged variety...
I have researched across the web to see similar problems, but no solutions. Any thoughts
Thanks

Okay... I finally have my dash synced via bluetooth...
...now how can I edit my registry on my pc to change what serial port (com6) my bluetooth uses to push data files
Help i cannot sync!
Hi, I hope somebody can help me, ever since I installed 6.1 and try to syn either via bluetooth or usb my phone says "this device its not allowed to connect to desktop computer" i dont know what to do and i really need to sync my phone!
XP or vista?
what bluetooth stack?
its vista and its the built-in bluetooth on my laptop!
Vista won't partner after upgrade to 6.1
I just upgraded to mobile 6.1 and overall everything works now after installing a bunch of cab files to fix the keyboard issues. However now my Windows Vista won't recognize my HTC phone. I finally went to USB to PC setting and unchecked "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" and Vista seemed to recognize it. However my Dash now says it REQUIRES Active Sync 4.5 or higher. Vista uses Windows Mobile Center and for some reason I can't get it to recognize and create a partnership. Any thoughts?
Also how do I get a song to become my ring tone. Seems this was lost
Thanks!
Unfortunately, I have the same problem. I updated to the latest "Windows Mobile Device Center" - still no luck, I get "Synchronization Failed Error" and to update to active sync 4.5 - Wierd :S
However, I have another computer running vista, it's a brand new pc which barely has anything on it and it connects just fine so I had to use that all day yesterday but the pc I use is in my room and that's the one giving me errors.
Any Solutions?
firewall? that might be a part to your problem

Wait... will WP7S have wifi?

or does it ONLY have 3g/4g data plans *ONLY*
Wi-Fi is a required spec, according to the leaks.
It been stated the the devce will back up your data overnight while charging via wifi on your home network so of course it has to have wifi to do so.
It's not a leak when they post the info themselves. http://live.visitmix.com has the keynote (which explains a good chunk of it) and the sessions (not all are posted yet but will be) explain pretty much everything else. Most of the platform details can be found in this session (video not up yet but powerpoint is).
since MS is heavilly copying Apple, I bet they don't even have proper bluetooth support....

Wifi sync on the Zune HD is great. It'll be nice to have that integrated into WP7 as well. I just hope that the Zune store is accessible over 3G and not solely through desktop sync or WiFi. It would be awesome to have access to the full catalog of Zune music from wherever I am, but they have hinted at the possibility of only allowing access via Wifi or through the desktop.

control WP7 phone/SMS from PC

hey guys, i'm having trouble with finding a program like mobiledit or jeyo that allows you to SMS and have phone priveleges on a pc. my netbook has windows 7 starter and i can't find anything that works with windows 7 starter or with wp7 or with both. anyone know something i could use? this is a necessity with me. if i can't find something, i'll be migrating away from wp7 and my samsung focus. even samsung's own pc studio software does not support the focus.
all my controls would be via bluetooth.
there isn't a program at present to do this as the phone is locked down quite a bit and APIs would need to be written to get this going (or phone needs to be hacked up for it, which i don't see happening any time soon).

that seems so odd to me. windows 7 starters automatically answers incoming calls and allows me controls of my phone's zune playback (forward/backwards, stop/pause) while connected to the phone via bluetooth, so you would think since windows has already got the functionality of partially controlling the phone, they would go ahead and add the texting and the "answer/ignore/dial" functionality as well.
there are some serious functionality problems with the wp7 in these regards. you go look at mobiledit's list of working phones and it is just about every phone made except the windows phone 7. any ideas on if this could happen in the next year?
i would suggest hitting up social.microsoft.com about this. that is more of a direct source. MS could provide more ideas as to what they're doing at the MWC next week, but i doubt it would be detailed enough down to particular featuresets.

DLNA for Nokia WP7 (Beta)

Hi Guys,
Just to let you know in case some of you haven't realized it Nokia is Testing a DLNA App called 'PLAY TO' for Nokia WP7 Devices.

It's glitchy for me. Pictures work fine but streaming video is an issue. I turned of the tv and rebooted the phone. After that it connected and played. The real annoyance is it has disconnected multiple times while I was watching a video.
DLNA is pretty cool but you are going to look like a total douche if it keeps disconnecting every 10 minutes. Glad this thing is in BETA. Hopefully they will get the kinks worked out.

[Q] galaxy s3 and 2010 Volkswagen audio

Just bought a 2010 gti.. which I'm loving.. I am excited to have a car with Bluetooth..
I got it paired to the Bluetooth system OK, it plays music as tho I had a headphone jack plugged in..
It will play call audio over the speakers and evidently the microphone, where ever it is, is working because people can hear me..
BUT.. I still need to use my phone to make or answer a call.. I've seen in videos people are using the car to browse their contact list and make a call.. I do not appear to have this functionality.. just curious if I could hit the jackpot here with someone who has had this problem
I'm running a custom ICS touchwiz ROM

In 2010, VW had multiple BT systems. Unfortunately, it sounds like you have the lesser of the 3 (as do I).
I forget the model #'s, but basically there's a top end version that's part of the NAV system which uses the navscreen nicely. Then there is a version used in all the marketing materials that has steering wheel controls and uses the cluster info display for your address book / caller ID. THEN -- there's the real low end, crummy one that just interfaces as an audio cut in with no other integration. This is what I have. You still need your phone for all features except picking up a call (the button on the ceiling can begin / end a call). Lame.
I think your build date determined which BT system is in your car. The good (middle) system was only for very early units. IIRC, there was a class action lawsuit against VW about this - I opted in, still waiting for my check...

That is generally covered by media. For example, my 2009 Ford focus has a similar system (SYNC) which will download contacts into a small address book and save them for me but doesn't reference contacts in the bluetooth settings area.

the car came with a iOS adaptor.. which does me no good..
i've done some research and have found this: http://www.amazon.com/Newest-interface-Adapter-Volkswagen-Touareg/dp/B004I9CXHW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370563911&sr=8-1&keywords=vw+micro+usb
coupled with this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Inch-Micro-USB-Cable/dp/B003YKX6WM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1370564040&sr=8-6&keywords=usb+micro+usb
i would have a micro USB adaptor that would plug into the propietary mmi port..
our phones don't use USB mass storage however.. has anyone tried this? looking for experiences before i pull the trigger if anyone can help.

Yes the bluetooth sounds horrible
Here's what I did, and it works beautifully..
I picked up the MDI USB adapter, fed a 6ft USB>micro USB through the center console to the dash where I fashioned a phone 'mount' from my Otterbox belt clip.
I noticed it was kind of clunky, and very slow (would take up to a minute for the Premium 8 to even recognize the S3) using the stupid MMS mode. It did work however. I did some research on enabling USB mass storage and found this app: SG USB Mass Storage Enablerhttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mohammadag.samsungusbmassstorageenabler&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5tb2hhbW1hZGFnLnNhbXN1bmd1c2JtYXNzc3RvcmFnZWVuYWJsZXIiXQ.. It does require root, with Busy Box installed. Now the P8 recognizes the phone in seconds, and is very fast. The app is also nice for syncing content (more on that later). If your phone reboots, you will need to re-enable UMS. I handled that thru Tasker so each time the phone reboots it executes the shortcut that enables UMS. Works seamlessly.. Please note that UMS ONLY works on the S3's external micro sd card. It works great on my S3 but YMMV..
Now as far as syncing content I wanted something as close to iTunes as possible. Part of my mission was to divorce myself from all things "i"- iTunes, iPod, and of course iPhone. But iTunes has always worked well for me in terms of syncing content. Did some more research and found a nice music manager called 'MusicBee'- http://getmusicbee.com/ With UMS enabled it syncs my content very fast.. MMS not so much. On a side note, why they got rid of UMS is beyond me..
Now to handle playlists, and since I primarily use playlists in the car, I use MusicBee to sync those to a standard SD card and plug that into the slot on the P8. Don't use anything larger than 32gig as the P8 only 'sees' 500 folders. There is no limitation when using the MDI port so this limitation doesn't apply the the phone's storage.
One thing I want to mention is that if you want to be able to shuffle across all your folders you need to make sure to put a random MP3 in the root of your devices SD card. Start playing that song first, hit mix and you can shuffle across your entire library.
All browsing is done via the headunit just as you would an iPod. All tag info is displayed on the headunit as well, with the only exception being you can only browse the content of the phone's micro SD- so folder structure is important. The nice thing about this is that you can run other apps (I run Torque) since the MDI is only sees the S3 as a storage device, so hands free calling still works.
It also keeps the phone charged

first of all, thanks a TON for the detailed reply..
based on your advice i went ahead and grabbed http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I9CXHW/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and a USB http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QE03GK/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
i run a rooted rom so grabbed busybox and USB MS enabler.. we'll see how it goes! if not, im out 20 bucks.. whatever haha.. either way its very nice to here from someone with the same set up
Grabbed this too as insurance, at least it will sound better than before
i did also find a 16gb sd i had laying around so i threw that in the car yesterday, but my main device for music is my phone so it would be nice to have everything in one place. Even that is very nice to be able to navigate on the head unit as opposed to scrolling through my phone whilst bluetoothing.
if i may be so bold, are you using something like an OBD2 bluetooth adaptor for that torque app? do you have any recomendations for picking 1 vs the other? would be great to hear from a mk6 owner. there are a ton to choose from http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_11?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=bluetooth+obd2&sprefix=bluetooth+o%2Celectronics%2C253
