I went out and picked myself a galaxy nexus just yesterday and while I love ics I have the weirdest problem ever
Let's say I am loading a web page on my slow internet -- the screen would turn off while waiting as if the phone is idle but it shouldn't cause I am browsing. What could be wrong ?
Hi,
Increase the display sleep time?
Settings/Display/Sleep and...
Or just touch the screen to prevent the sleep?

It says screen off during inactivity...
How is it inactive if the browser is loading or YouTube loading a video...the android os needs to know its being used and not to shut off the screen.
Although your method of tapping the screen is a solution it isn't.
I hate to say it but even the crappy iPhone doesn't have this problem.
Re,
Either you have not understood what I wrote or it's me who is not understood...
And for the screen sleep time???Set it to 1 min...or 5?
If your screen sleep time is set to 30s then touch the screen at...about 20s...I don't know...then the screen will be on for another 30s...?
So,sorry for my reply and a possible solution I thought...

My phone never shuts off the screen while I'm loading a YouTube video.
You're doing it wrong.
And it shuts off while you are loading a page because your internet is crap and the phone IS idle.
You are holding it wrong!
There is an app that can help this. I think it won some awards from Google when it was developed also. It's called screebl and it is available both in Google Play and Amazon app store. It was a free app of the day on Amazon last year so I got it for free but the paid version is only $2, support the developer please.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keyes.screebl.full&hl=en
http://www.amazon.com/KeyesLabs-com-Screebl-Pro/dp/B004I9ZBC6
You should try re set you phone!
The browser does not hold a wakelock, YouTube app is programmed to hold a wakelock. This is normal.
My nexus frequently returns to the home screen by itself while browsing. When I go back go the browser, the page I was viewing is gone and it displays my home page. Extremely frustrating.
Anybody else experience this?

If you aren't touching the screen it will timeout.

Dear all
I am new to this forum and new to using HTC, so therefore would like to share my experience and to see whether anyone else shares the same experience:
In terms of battery life, I can get through virtually the whole day on one charge, this includes streaming videos for around 2 hours, playing games like GTA3, Shadowgun, Riptide, for an hour~ Listen to FM radio for 30 minutes and just general texting now and again.
HOWEVER I have had the phone since April 5th and since 2 or 3 days ago I have been experiencing a bug that prevents me from unlocking my phone. Once the screen is blacked out in standby mode and I click the power button to turn on the screen and try to pull the ring up to unlock, I am unable to do so. The ring stays locked at the bottom with a few minor bounces and at the top of the screen a text reads pull the ring up to unlock. The only way for me to unlock the screen is to activate the settings menu from the locked screen and then click the home button. Additionally once I am back from the unlock screen the lower portion of my screen where I had difficulty unlocking the phone operates as normal. I have tried searching this forum but maybe I am a uber noob but can't find any mention of this or any fixes. Does anyone have this issue? Do I need to return my phone? The phone is with Three UK and I purchased the handset through Affordable Mobiles.
Additionally is it me or does the phone not enable multitasking? I have loaded a youtube video for example half way through but if I use the recent app button or home button to access another program say "Fruit Ninja" and then reload into the Internet app, the handset is forced to reload the webpage thus losing all my previous loaded stream. This is the same when I play GTA3 if I hit the home button by mistake and then quickly try to re-enter the game it loads the game from the start rather than resuming the gameplay.
I have recently also seen "noise" and other artifacts and screen anomalies. Additionally the screen flex is becoming more and more noticeable.
Hope someone can help! But atm I am thinking how the hell can they have released this product after alpha and beta testing should have uncovered these issues right?
Best wishes

For the unlocking, do you use a silicone cover for your phone? I heard this stops the screen from working due to static no ground (which would usually be your hand) as the silicone cover isn't a conductor the screen has no ground!!!
I don't have a silicon cover but I do have a screen protecter. Does no one else have a issue with the unlocking ofthe phone

thx... any idea about the lag?
i dont think you will have lag while in regular use...you might have the lag when you check contacts immediately open waking your phone from deep sleep..this is due to the 4 cores getting revved up from deep sleep, takes 1- 1.5 sec..
try this , play a graphic intensive game and then open contacts- does it still lag?
My G pad refreshes at all times regardless of what I'm doing. If I'm watching a video on YouTube at anytime usually ranging from 3-6 minutes the tablet will refresh and go back a "tab". If im on Facebook typing a comment the tab will refresh thus closing the type box and going back to the top of my feed. If I am listening to music on my SD the player will refresh and go back to the last page I was looking at music is not interrupted.
I have called Verizon for a replacement they sent me back my original and said nothing was wrong with it.
I have tried master resets, using it in airplane mode, safe mode, no WiFi and SD card less.
Has anyone experienced this or have a suggestion?
Which ROM and which kernel are you using?
Are you doing overclocking or UC?
Kernel 3.4.0 not sure how to answer your other questions.
Other info:
Hardware version Rev 1.0
Android version 4.4.2
Software version vk81022b
Sounds like all is on stock and no custom ROM OR kernel.
So probably I cannot help ?
One question, do you observe this strange behavior in landscape mode as well?

What apps are you using? Sounds like an app problem or developer setting problem. Battery saving apps?
If not, the answer is simple; they are wrong.
Yea same behavior, I'm not running any apps other than stock at this point I've master reset it a couple times haven't bothered to do anything with it.
Do you have a case or screen protector on the device? If you take it out of the case does the problem go away?
I have had ghost touch issues with a device before and it was related to the case I was using on that device. Basically in your situation the case could be somehow touching the back button...
My touch screen on this device is extremely sensitive. I have had touches register where I swear my finger never made contact with the device. Do you have a finger near the back button when the problem occurs?
If neither of these suggestions apply you do have an issue and should take it to a Verizon store where you can demonstrate the problem if possible.
No case on it and i let it sit in front of me and it does it. Worst part is i work for vz customer service I know what a pain in the .. It is to go through tech go through the same steps ive gone over at least 3 times and wait for them to confirm the issue after ive sent it back.
same issue
I am also having the same issue, it will make me click play on a youtube video 4 or 5 times within a 5 minute song. So any resolutions yet
I recently bought an unlocked Amazon Fire phone ($125; it came loaded with Fire OS 4.6.4). The phone seems solid and well-built. The only change I made to the stock phone so far was to load Google Play, using the instructions on the spinyourfire website.
I have noticed that the screen timeout does not work anymore. Whether I set the interval to 15 secs or any other setting, the phone does not go to sleep until a good 4-5 minutes have elapsed. I Googled this problem but did not find anything. Has anybody run into this, or am I overlooking something obvious? Thanks much!
Do you have a screen protector? I had to remove mine because it was messing with the proximity sensor.
I do have a screen protector. Did you experience similar problems with your phone (screen timeout not working), and did they go away after you took the screen protector off? I'd never though of that...

I had a tempered glass screen protector. I didn't notice that specific issue. The 2 major issues I immediately encountered was (1) the screen would remain off during a call and (2) the home button wouldn't wake the phone up. Maybe either of those issues are also happening to you?
I did not experience the 2 problems you described (screen off during a call, and home button not waking the phone up). My screen timeout problem is really intermittent: it seemed to work fine yesterday as the phone went to sleep after 15 secs of inactivity, as I wanted it to. Today, the phone remained stubbornly on for 10 mins and refuses to go to sleep.
I wonder if sideloading Google Play has something to do with it. I'll try uninstalling the Google Play stuff and see if it affects my timeout problem. I will update the thread.
I may have stumbled on the cause, as well as the solution, of my problem: apps running in the background may have prevented the phone from going to sleep.
I used the "Quick Switch" feature on the phone to display all running apps, then killed most of them by dragging them towards the top of the screen. Now my phone is going to sleep within 15-30 secs of inactivity, like I wanted it to. I hope this thread helps someone else struggling with the problem.

That's good news. Glad you didn't have to rip off your screen protector. Now all you need to do is figure out which app in particular is keeping your phone awake.
I've gotten this problem since 20 days ago where my Google Maps get frozen in the middle of my trip. And I had reboot the device multiple times (4-5 times, sometimes skipping the LineageOS booting animation).
After fiddling over 2 weeks, I finally switched to LineageOS 17.0 now (previously using 15.1). The problem still persists.
The problem is : the screen froze, I seem able to tap something on screen but the display doesn't change anything despite my interaction with screen. This especially pronounced when I stop my screen interaction (i.e. not scrolling) on these apps
- Google chrome (say, reading any articles on web)
- Quora (especially when I about to scroll down on author bio)
- Google Sheets
- Maps
but this unresponsiveness doesn't appear at all when I:
- Play any kind of games
- watching YouTube (with the app)
In general, it seems anything that uses webview can cause the screen freezes if I leave it couple seconds. At first I thought changing from android webview to chrome webview implementation changes this. It doesn't.
The "cure" I found is simply turning the display off for 40 seconds ~ 75 seconds, and turning it back on, where I can interact with lock screen fine again. Any time lower than 40 seconds will simply show the frozen display again the time I turn the screen on.
Is it possible it's a hardware problem? (faulty RAM/storage) after using this for 2.5 years) Since full system wipe and re-install doesn't entirely solve the problem. The first time I encountered this is when I navigate with my Google Maps and the screen simply froze out during drive, and I had to restart the device multiple times, worrying that my device is broken. The next time I drive, I leave it only on Ambient Display and it didn't freeze at all.
So... any idea how to troubleshoot this?
It seems the problem is more severe than just Android.
Because even in TWRP, I noticed the display need to wait ~1 minute from the last time I turn off the display (push the power button) to reactivating it.
If I try to turn it on, the display will give black color, but I still can actually interact with the system.

Thanks for responding.
I already enable "Show taps" on developer options. But the problem is that the screen freeze happened when there was no touch at all (i.e. I just looking at the screen, reading)
There's new observation I made today that : usually the screen doesn't want to immediately awaken when I just turn the screen off.
Today I tried to remove fingerprint from lock screen, the screen now is able to respond quickly again upon pressing power on button. It's still as responsive to power on when I add pattern to the device lock mechanism.
I'm not too sure whether this is OS level problem or even closer to hardware problem because this kind of unresponsiveness is also apparent even when I boot to TWRP.

That is one big weird problem, i've never encounter something like that since i ever using a smartphones.
It does really sound like, it just a software problem. But if it also happen in TWRP, it doesn't look like it.
I also have installed LOS17 by Arian before too, and i dont have that problem.
Sorry man i have no idea nor expert about it
It could be your battery is dying?, if your battery cant give enough power to the screen already, screen gonna act like crazy i.e ghost touch etc.
I have a broken battery been using it for 2Year + because of the battery my screen has a problem too. I replaced it last december 2019 and everything went normal again.

I don't think it's a battery problem. I see that I can play game for 1hr+ fine. A game that require exact timing of 2 touches on top of that. So that ghost touch really doesn't appear.
But yeah, it's really 2 contrasting sign
- In one hand, it seems an OS problem because I can simulate an environment where the screen definitely won't be frozen for hours, while on specific other environment, the screen freeze can happen very quickly between release and re-occurence.
- On the other hand, the problem seem doesn't stop on OS level because it can be found in TWRP.
If I read an answer on Quora that shows GIF image on the section I read, the screen freeze 100% won't happen. I tried the same thing on imgur too, the screen freeze won't happen.
So it seems that as long as the screen is showing dynamic content, it won't freeze (that's why game and YouTube doesn't show this kind of problem, but reading a web full of text/static images can)
A bit of update : I have left my phone in off state for 4-5 days. And I have been using it again, albeit, less extensively since my main phone has changed to K20 Pro.
Long story short : I haven't encountered screen freeze again. But this is just after 2 days playing with less intensity.
I wonder what really went wrong.
