Is it possible to have a phone work w/o activating on a service provider?
I just bought a brand new EVO unopened and then I unrevoked forever rooted and nand unlocked it, loading a custom rom and realized it works? Phone, internet, etc.
How is this possible?

It has an auto-activate feature
That is weird. So you went and bought a brand new phone in the box from a store for $500? Without activating, that's how much it would cost. If you bought it new in the box from someone in the street, I hope it wasn't one of those deals where the ESN is tied to some account as Sprint may give you a hard time activating it under your own account.
It sounds to me like you purchased a phone that was already activated. Try calling a phone from that phone to get the number off of the called ID, and then go to Sprint.com and try to register it with a user name/password to see if you can see the account information tied to the number on the phone.

Yes, but the phone would have to be set up by Sprint for the auto-activate feature to work. If Sprint doesn't tie the ESN to an account, it has nothing to auto-activate to.

That will tell you what number is activated on the phone..
maybe its yours lol
I just looked at phone I'd. It has a phone number, not mines. It says sprint carrier but. I looked at the id before and it was blank.
I bought it on the street, new in opened.
well sorry to tell you this but that was probably stolen...
If its working that means its still on the other persons account
so i'll doubt you'll be able to activate it on yours.

Well I not going touse it that way. I'm gonna convert it to use on Cricket.
Just thought it was weird.
Evos ota activation can be pretty sketchy at times

No, don't think so. I'd like to try another new Evo to see what happens.
Anybody ever have this problem? My phone had been working well for the last 5 months and now it is unable to connect to tmobile. I replaced it with the new sim and it still has the same problem. Placing the sim in another Tmobile does work however.
I am still unable to connect using Juggernaut, All the ICS roms, etc.
Even Odin back to stock and it still doesn't register to the network. I look at the APN settings and it is clicked for Tmobile.

Sounds like the device is blacklisted. Where did you buy it from ?
Yes it was blacklisted. I got it unopened from craigslist. Tmobile blocked it after i have been using for 4 months.
They won't tell me why or how to resolve it. Oh welll . I lost money on this one.
Hey dattack I sent u a pm.. please respond
Uh oh sounds like someone has a sketchy and illegal solution they don't want to discuss among the public lol

I have a Galaxy SIII sitting in front of me that I have to get the seller to refund my money cause of this problem. Tmo says the phone was reported as not received after ordering. I guess when they do that, they block the IMEI and won't unblock it for anyone but the original seller. I guess after they pay for the phone.
Hey all,
so I bought a SGS2 from a friend for $50 since he upgraded, and everything on the phone works fine except it doesn't get any signal. I figured for $50 I would try and see if I can get it working. I don't exactly know what all he did to the phone, but he did install a custom rom on it. I have tried to install different radios, returned it to stock, tried to use the gsii_repair app on the market (keeps giving me an error about the nv_data.bin file not being found) all to no avail. Everything on the phone works like I said, but it just stays showing the circle with the line through it on the top and when I go to About Phone it shows the IMEI number correctly but Network is unknown, Mobile Network Type is unknown, Mobile Network State is disconnected. My sim card works just fine in my Sensation 4g. If anyone knows how to resolve this problem I would be very grateful. otherwise I guess I can just sell it on ebay for parts.
thanks!
Sounds like tmobile blocked the imei.

Have you factory reset it?? or tried the ics stock radio zip from the dev section?
35 imei twrp rooted am I missing something? Been a long time user of XDA just never posted so I can't post links so I guess imgur. /a/AgTqD7U
Did you do anything to enable oem unlocking?
Nothing out of the ordinary. Loaded os WiFi on, no sim , dev options enabled oem unlocking then fastboot commands. It does in my opinion disprove that it's because of the imei not being 99 though

My only issue is, I don't see that it's a 35 imei. Pics don't show it. Of course. No need for full imei, but definitely would love to see that it is a Verizon model. I know my pixel 3 is a Verizon one, and when I got it, before I even popped my sim in, I was unable to even toggle the switch. They didn't have one pre-installed in this one, I put my sim from my old phone in after it was still greyed. Had it on my wife's Wi-Fi for 30 Min before giving up
I get that and if you want private message me I'll give you my number and send whatever needed to unlock these if it's here.

If your phone is a Verizon Pixel XL, No.
If your phone is a Verizon Pixel 3 XL, Yes:
Please write the steps you did to root (unlock the bootloader) it.

What country are you in? I know that some devices in Europe can be unlocked after a certain period of time, I think 6 months or after you've paid off the contract. Something along those lines. Perhaps the IMEI are different outside the US? Nonetheless, did you buy it as a Verizon branded device either from Best Buy, Google or Verizon? If you bought it from Verizon then I'd say you got lucky as mentioned above. But suffice it to say you have done nothing that hasn't been tried hundreds of times.
USA, and I agree about it probably being luck of the draw however it is a proof of concept that it can be done. This is a Verizon branded device. Was a warranty but in store and still in the sealed box without a sim in it.
My personal feeling is there's a fastboot command that is fastboot oem rma that sets the trigger for it. They have to be able to unlock them during the RMA process for repairs right?

Where did you buy it? What do you mean by it was "a warranty"? In store sealed without a sim is extremely unusual if it was a brand new device. They all come with a Verizon sim in them afaik.
As for the fastboot rma commands, it's not necessarily the way they would do it. They could whitelist the IMEI temporarily, fastboot a factory image, then blacklist it again. Perhaps they forgot to blacklist yours. I'd say *very* lucky.
400 hours on the line with Verizon/Google I finally told them to give me a new one under warranty 5th one for various reasons and my final warranty according to them. I honestly don't think it was luck considering I even got a letter from corporate office (vzw) to cease and desist my contact with them regarding the bootloader they don't like it when you know their policies better then them and call them out for quoting policies out of thin air.
Hmm.. 400 hours? Might be time to close this thread. Sounds like a bunch of bull **** to me. Consider me trolled.

a proof of concept aka POC would mean you have process to unlock the bootloader which in this case you dont. You dont have any steps for anyone to replicate it nor do you know exactly how it was possible which means no poc can exist.
just my 2 cents of course lol
Proof of trolled more like
Sounds like a jcbizsnatch kind of story.
I'm not quite sure what happened but I was loading the android flash tool on Googles site and my OEM unlocking allowed me to toggle it on my Verizon Pixel 6 Pro. I purchased this directly through Verizon last Saturday and could not do a unlock then. I did a factory reset today to try and fix my contacts not syncing and the OEM locking button let me toggle it. I am currently flashing the full factory image from Google with a unlocked bootloader now.
Hmmm. Did you fully pay off the cost of the phone?
Perhaps Verizon is doing what they haven't done in the past and started following the paths of the other phone carriers (where your phone can be bootloader unlocked - but only once you fully pay off the phone's cost).
Of course, there is also a chance that you just got extremely lucky, haha.

Dang. That's an absolutely amazing fluke, haha. It makes me wonder if a factory reset through the flash tool site would have done this to Verizon model P6P phones from the get-go. Hmmmm....

I'm not sure but I think it might have been something with the flash tool. I started to open it up in chrome and connect the phone. Then I checked the dev options and I was able to unlock it. I'm happy.

Wow, that's awesome! It kinda makes me wanna switch back to Verizon, haha. Where I am currently working, you can't get service from any carriers except for Verizon. But I would hate to ditch T-Mobile and possibly lose my data in other areas outside of work...
Regardless, supposedly Google is going to give great trade-in values for purchasing the P7 and P7P... And if they provide 500-600 for the P6P (256GB model), then the P7 regular would be free. If true, this has me questioning which model P7 I should get (if the modem is actually decent and isn't the crummy old one that is in the P6 series phones, haha).
*Edit* - Just to clarify, there might be T-Mobile signal where I work. But the data strength certainly isn't strong/good in my area, hence why I am considering the upgrade =/
