Is it possible to have a phone work w/o activating on a service provider?
I just bought a brand new EVO unopened and then I unrevoked forever rooted and nand unlocked it, loading a custom rom and realized it works? Phone, internet, etc.
How is this possible?

It has an auto-activate feature
That is weird. So you went and bought a brand new phone in the box from a store for $500? Without activating, that's how much it would cost. If you bought it new in the box from someone in the street, I hope it wasn't one of those deals where the ESN is tied to some account as Sprint may give you a hard time activating it under your own account.
It sounds to me like you purchased a phone that was already activated. Try calling a phone from that phone to get the number off of the called ID, and then go to Sprint.com and try to register it with a user name/password to see if you can see the account information tied to the number on the phone.

Yes, but the phone would have to be set up by Sprint for the auto-activate feature to work. If Sprint doesn't tie the ESN to an account, it has nothing to auto-activate to.

That will tell you what number is activated on the phone..
maybe its yours lol
I just looked at phone I'd. It has a phone number, not mines. It says sprint carrier but. I looked at the id before and it was blank.
I bought it on the street, new in opened.
well sorry to tell you this but that was probably stolen...
If its working that means its still on the other persons account
so i'll doubt you'll be able to activate it on yours.

Well I not going touse it that way. I'm gonna convert it to use on Cricket.

Hi all,
Well my EVO has given me two great years, but Sprint's speeds just got too bad to bear in my area and I was tired of dealing with ROMs and such so I got a Galaxy Nexus on Straight Talk. I'd like to know what all I need to do to prepare my EVO to sell on eBay. Should I get it back to latest OTA or just sell it with CM 7.2 flashed? Is one or the other more desirable to buyers? Should I restore S-OFF/root? How do I securely wipe EVERYTHING so I feel safe none of my stuff got left behind?
A lot of auctions also mention devices having a bad ESN. If my Sprint service is terminated prior to selling can I ensure my device will not have a bad ESN and I can sell it as a device ready to be reactivated?
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would flash the latest stock Rom (it can't be activated with aosp installed) but I would leave it rooted. Also, if your contract was terminated for non payment then it would have a bad esn

if you're serious you need to look up how to get your MSL, make sure EPST is working, run ##7780#, and get the phone into what is known as a "hands-free activation" state.
every evo i have bought on ebay - and i have bought a few - has had the previous users phone number and some kind of email address visible under settings .. about phone .. phone identity (sense) or settings .. about phone .. status (AOSP)
plus of course nuke your photos and music on the SD card - half the time people leave that stuff too .. smh ..

PM'd you.
So it's looking like I can't wipe out my name and phone number from the device. My number has already been ported to my new service and the Sprint account is cancelled. No dial codes work and factory reset/clear storage does not remove this info. I called a rep and she just said that the info from the last owner is going to be there until it's activated again, and she assured me that it was ready to be activated on a new line. I guess it's not a problem since the buyer would know my name and number anyway, but it's still a little weird. Does this sound correct?

I think you can sell it to repair shop too
Just ask in the listing if they want to stock s-on, or rooted with s-off. I dont think either one is more desirable, depends on the buyer. Not everyone even knows what root it, as far as ESN, it should be clean. To confirm just call sprint and read them yours and see.
Ok im new here mainly to try to find answers to my problem. Apparently i bought a stolen S3 that is blacklisted through AT&T. Phone turns on and looks like its brand new except i cant do anything on it (make calls, text, internet) my question is can there be ANY solution to this, or am i just SOL. Its fine if i am, but just figured i could try all options and thats when i stumbled upon this site. Im not asking anyone to do anything for me, just can it be done. Is it "locked" or "blocked" ? If i unlocked it would it work then? Please any help is appreciated

Did AT&T tell you that it's blacklisted, or is that just your assumption? Just trying to make sure it isn't something else like a missing IMEI code.
And if it was stolen, I'd get rid of it if it were me. You can get in a lot of trouble for receiving stolen goods.
At any rate, not here to preach. You can unlock it for free using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34661189#post3466118
That said, if you use a T-Mobile sim card you'll probably only get Edge network, which is slower than dial-up (not really, but it is agonizingly slow). In some areas of the country T-Mobile has rolled out newer networks and you might get H+. Worth a shot at any rate. Good luck. :good:

Chances are, it could be blacklisted on all GSM networks, not just AT&T. All a person would need to do is call up respective customer care, and get it disabled. If he got it for one, I don't think he'd be stupid enough not to get it disabled on other MAJOR networks.
When you got it, didn't you put in your cell sim and check if it was working or not?
Hey guys I have a quick question,
I have a Sprint Note II that I want to activate on my line but I'm having a little issue. Back story: I acquired it because my sister failed to pay Sprint so they canceled her plan and she needed cash so she gave me her Note II in exchange for the money she needed since she no longer has Sprint. So the phone works fine, but they won't remove it from her account because she owes a balance of over $500. She's called in and even though the phone isn't financed through Sprint they won't release the SN/MEID from her account so needless to say, it cannot be added to my line. I'm wondering if there's a manner to get it off her account or change out the SN/MEID to make it usable? I've been running an HTC Evo Design for the last 2 years and really need to upgrade my phone but again, I gave my sister money so I no longer have the cash. I cannot for obvious reasons of her being my sister and requiring money tell her to give me back my money.
I originally thought they wouldn't remove it because when I called it wasn't her on the line. Even after being able to fully verify her account. I was speaking to the rep and he said that there is a manner but obviously couldn't tell me what it was so I'm turning to the trusty XDA forums.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(even if it's not a program or something, a manner of speaking with them or getting them to take it off her account without having to pay the balance)
Thank you,
Tag
The only way it "could" have been done is if you were able to reactivate the account for a short duration then call in and Swap the phone out with an older device. It would free up the phone and you could let the acct go out again.

Are you on Sprint too?
Odds are you're hosed if so. They always permanently brick the MEID of devices on accounts that are cancelled due to lack of payment. You can flash the device to another carrier and use it however.

Yeah pretty much. Or you can do the gsm mod and use it anywhere but the US.
Hmmm, I might flash it and put it on TMobile then..... Wonder who'd accept it...
I have my bad esn flashed to cricket no problems. Anywhere you flash it you will lose 4g, but mine works flawlessly with cricket. I have far greater reception abd 3g speeds from my previous carrier, boost mobile (which is sprint).

You can't flash it to T-Mobile, they're GSM. You can only flash it to another compatible CDMA carrier. Ofcourse there are other, shall we say clandestine ways to get it on Sprint, but obviously taboo to discuss on here.
So my girlfriend just purchased an S6 (sprint) and when she took it to the store to have it activated they couldn't do it because it was "locked"...some kind of carrier lock I'm assuming.. Like they owed sprint money or something? Obviously if it was a normal security lock than we could just do a factory reset but apparently that won't work.
So.. Anyone know anything about this and a way around it? I'm a Verizon user and have never heard of this kind of problem. Thanks for any help in advance.

All carriers, including Verizon, have a carrier BLOCK not lock. A carrier lock means the device is locked to that carrier. What exactly did Sprint say? If the phone is blacklisted, which you can check on any ESN checker online, then it will never work on Sprint.
Where did she buy the phone at?

Yup. Its definitely carrier blocked. NEVER buy cell phones from Craigslist without first checking the ESN from Sprint directly. You are better off selling the device on eBay FOR PARTS.
The point of a carrier block is so people who steal, or fail to pay off their device, can not use it anymore, and thus rip off good people on craigslist and eBay.

That I believe is an FRP lock.. Totally different from a carrier block. But if you go into download mode, you can press the home key to view IMEI. But FRP lock, which is what you just described, can be bypassed.
Check out this video and follow it to a T. You may need to improvise do to different android versions.

Hope it helps! If its just FRP locked, and not carrier blocked, then you should be okay to get it activated.

Yeah It more than likely was. It's pretty much a dead end.. My gf payed for it but her brother met the person somewhere for pickup.. Only contact information is an email address which they haven't responded too after the sale. Apparently the phone was dead when he picked it up. I personally would have put it on my car charger and powered it on before paying for it.. And got more information.. But oh well.. Now she knows to be more cautious and I'll probably handle any future used phone purchases for her.

Samsung would have entered in to a contract with only one of you. Rather than "our" trade-in, it would have been your girlfriends, I assume.
So, you could contact Samsung and see if you can take over the contract - or start another one?
But, it sounds like the phone isn't fully paid off, so isnt owned by either of you yet.
Thats my delima, its under my exes name and when I called Samsung they refused to talk any further. I tried to pay it off but they dont want to hear me. Is there another way such as rooting ?
Pisses me off, im out a S21 because of this for trading in and using a older iPhone which im no longer fond off since I switched to Android.
Long story short, send it back to your GF as it's hers and get one for yourself ...

You should check the IMEI against blacklist database. If it was purchased through a provider, chances are it will not work on that carrier, but should on others. If Samsung has it blacklisted, you're basically screwed.
Really frustrating, im trying to pay the balance owed so it can be reinststed, trying to avoid buying another one altogether since I gave up my last phone as part of the trade on this. Samsung doesn't want to talk to me.

and when you got the email that Samsung was going to disable it you should have signed out of your Samsung account bc you don't need it to get the phone to work bc you can sign in to your google accounts that's a loophole i figured out how on my own bc I didn't know about it until Samsung sent me the emails bc its gotta be signed in on a Samsung account before they can disable it bc its gotta be log in on Samsungs server i got the email in late December and been using it since i have gotten my z fold 3 and also verzions rom splits the iemi number up as it does on Verizon phones bc on gsm the iemi number is all into one and then Samsung can only disable it when your signed in
they can remote lock it if they don't have Samsung account signed in and i also think its doesn't matter what Samsung account i think it only matters to the one that the phone was bought with but i ain't gonna test it tho i don't want a paperweight

I'm pretty sure your EX GF the owner of the phone is the only one Samsung can and will talk to.
If you can still reason with her I think your best bet would be to contact her and try and work something out
its in her best interests other wise it's just going against her credit. Maybe she'll let you take over the phone and payments.
