The Ultimate drop test - HTC One X

Well...had my HOX for about 4 weeks now and finally it happened. I managed to drop my phone out the window.
It's the second time I've done it with a phone. The first was my HTC Sensation, which also took the plunge from the same height onto concrete and amazingly, was fine. Well...this time was the HOX.
Like many do, I was playing with my phone at the window, the sun was out, clouds were minimal and the breeze was gentle...before i knew it, my phone somehow, jumped out of my hands. I stood helplessly as I saw the phone fall out the window in slow motion, slow enough to give me time to think about about jumping after it and also about whether it would be worth it and then coming to the conclusion it wouldn't, regardless of how much i need my phone. As i stood there in shock, I saw the phone fall to it's death, hitting the concrete hard on a corner which then put it into a death spin of what would inevitably end the phone's life if the fall hadn't already.
Once the phone came to rest, I grabbed my keys and took a slow walk down the stairs, there was no rush as i was sure my phone was now a paperweight.
I saw the phone, face down, picked it up, turned it on with little hope of it working and BANG!!! it works, wohooo, nothing wrong with the screen or the touch function. A but of a bang on the side but I see that as character building.
so you can all rest assured now, the phone can happily fall from a height of a second floor (3rd floor if you're american)fall.

I'm really surprised about it, there's a big bump on one of the corners, and a small one on another corner but that's it, it even slid on the concrete abour 75cm, face down and there's not a scratch on the screen.
I was thinking about heading the SGS3 route, but might keep this now since it can survive such a fall...i'm sure any other smart phone would've met their demise over much shorter heights of fall. The Iphone4 would definitely not survive such a collision with destiny.

One lucky bast..d
Its all I can say lol!

Just sand it down a bit and it's good as new. You're lucky it dropped on a corner.

I think I would have had a heart attack. Even when I put my HOX on my pocket I put it very slowly so it won´t get scratched against the belt surface or some other protuberance (which happened to once when I had the GS1). I will only rest when my protective case arrives.

You had two phones that tried to kill themselves? Listen to me, buy a case for any other phone you own.
I am utterly impressed, regardless on which side the phone landed on.

All o can tell u that u r lucky indeed HOX all da way

Wow, you are lucky. Mine fell 2 ft and the screen cracked..
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

wow that's amazing
i bet a bit of special sandpaper may help to disguise the mark on the plastic

I don't think there is many other phones that would survive that fall, another unibody phone might depending on the material used.
Good thing about polycarbonate though is its strength, but then that's why its used for crash helmets.

If he had fallen on the front or the back shell, you would have had to pick it up with a little spoon. So you should consider your self very lucky.

Luck of the draw.
I've seen experiments on why toast always lands butter side down on the floor. Essentially, its size and the height of a table will do that. If tables were 3m high, or toast was 10cm across, or 1m across, butter side up.
If your phone hits the deck screen side down, it's toast. Any phone.
Luck of the draw (from pocket) really.

yea guys, spread the world and let them know the true awesomeness of HTC One X I love the phone TBH!
Submit Threat as News Tip all the wayyyy!

that is awesome, and i disagree with others saying its "toast" if screen hits floor, use this for example http://www.appledaily.com.tw/appledaily/article/headline/20120528/34259363/ ... the guy hammers a nail into wood with the screen !!!!

@Barff1984
Dude that's amazing! ! Also I have the same battery charger as you!
Are you just running it normally or have you made any modifications to the unit or cable?
As you may know it only charges USB mode and not ac mode which is slower.

so many phones lost.... other stolen... other drops...
you are a very unlucky dude.... hows the love in you life ehehehehe

dropped desire and...... it held up well

so i dropped it last night and it landed on the top right coener before cartwheeling around abit, was pulling it out of my traouser pocket and the pavement was stone.
its dented the metal surround a bit and taken some of the "brown" out of the metal but allin all it was a bad drop and hardly any signs so pretty pleased
Its always the first drop that it the most *painful* after that you tend to forget that you dropped it
Lost mine so many times to the ground now that i cant even count it And its still as shiny as before
I'm always pulling mine out of my pocket when I'm cycling, really surprised I haven't dropped it yet.
Dropped mine twice. 1st time I got a liitle scuff where it impacted. 2nd time not so lucky. Screen really badly cracked although still worked. Thank god for insurance.
Could you guys post some photos of how your phones look like after you've dropped them on concrete? I'm bit curious

Yea matey - dropped mine too when it was a week old , I had it in a leather case and as I got out the car and turned it flew out the case and bounced on the ground a few times - I ended up with a dent in the top corner and a few scuffs on the back battery cover - mine is now in a crystal case
Dropped mine 6-7 times this week, lol. Just about every other time I try and remove it from my pocket, it lands on the floor. Even had concrete dust over the top edge of it, from work. No dent in performance and no dust behind the screen.
I was going to use a second phone for work. What's the point though? It's insured.
Dropped move twice in one day, first as I exited a car, few grazes on the top left corner and knocked out 1 pixel which is red instead of white (made 100000000x worse with OCD ), second from about chest height. Surprisingly no more damage than the first time I dropped it. Did better than the iPhone 4

Dropped mine when i was pissed one time. On pavement. Loads of scuffs and dents on all 4 corners. Then our lass went mental at me for being so pissed and threw it at my head. Then i managed to drop it in a drink of Tia Maria. Finally about a month and a half later...my trackpad has died! Everything else works fine still lol.
i dropped mine about a week ago. first time without any casing on it, the back cover came lose and the side of where my volume rocket poped out! but i pushed it back and it was ok. i'm on a case now and hopefully i'll never ever drop it again!
Happy to see this post. I thought I was the only one who drops his Desire constantly. I find the phone very slippery. Never had any damage from the drops, even on a tile floor. Very lucky I guess. I really should get a rubber protector for it.
Dropped mine in a night club the other night from about head height. It bounced, battery cover came off, battery flew out.....
All works fine and no markings what so ever! Surprised as it was a rather bad drop....
JAmes.
Dropped it the first time today, though only from a height of about a foot and a half/2 feet. Not a single visible mark. I was pleasantly surprised to see how sturdy it is, my iPhone got a nasty dent in the metal surrounding the case when that happened.
having not dropped it since april when i got it i've now managed to drop it twice in as many days and its still holding up suprisingly well, just some scuff marks so pretty happy
i dropped mine when i got out of a friends car... right on the edge of the pavement.
Now I have a pretty ugly dent where the power on button is.
Mine fell out of my hand today for the first time on my bed. But I was lying sideways and navigating the phone is hard with 1 hand anyway. So yeah, that was my only 'drop' so far.
*sigh* just dropped my desire from my front pocket on concrete floor..some colour off and a small dent on the upper left corner..this is my first drop and right now im feeling so bad about it..so bad that i called my wife back home (im outside country) to tell her about the drop
i dropped my desire, which left me with this...

Just had a situation occur that is having me seriously question our build quality...

I was sitting at my desk at work, and I went to get up and go to lunch. I didn't realize my phone was on my lap, but when I got up my phone fell out of my lap, and on to the carpet. The back came off and the battery came out ("big deal", I thought, since every other time I dropped a phone [not often], the battery came out). I get the battery, get the back, and go to grab the phone, when I realized that the front is basically shattered.
The phone didn't fall more than 3 feet onto carpeted floor, and I was just in awe at that. I still am. Fortunately, Sprint is going to replace it because I have insurance, and apparently there is no deductible which is nice. My EVO hasn't given me any problems though and I see about others who seem to and I hope that the refurb unit lasts longer than this one did. I might also be investing in an Otterbox or something.
Here's a pic of the carnage:

I dropped my phone onto the street when I was getting out of my car. It was from about 3-4' high. I bobbled it as a stood up and watched it crash face down to the ground in what appeared to be slow motion. Picked the phone up off the ground and it only had a few scratches on the corners. I thought for sure the screen would be cracked. I peeled off the screen protector when I got home, and not a single scratch on the screen. I don't use a case for the phone.
I guess my point to the story is that it could just be I was lucky, and you got unlucky. After my incident, I feel pretty confident in the HTC build quality.
Forgot to mention; sucks what happened to your phone. Good thing for insurance.

Thanks.
Yeah I dropped mine onto the wood floor at my house from a similar height as what happened today and nothing really happened, so that's why I was shocked. I dropped my Pre probably 4 or 5 times when I had it and nothing at all happened to it. The Pre was a tank for me, which is surprising since pretty much everyone else who had it complained bigtime about the build quality of it.
I'm debating on whether or not I should unroot my phone before I bring it back on Monday. The person at the store didn't even turn the screen on when I brought it in and approved it, but I didn't know if some flak would come of it running an (obviously not stock) rooted ROM when it got wherever it's going).
Or maybe they'll just toss it into the trash.
with the new what insurance is set up they should be able to fix your screen and hand it back to you IF its just the screen damaged
They'll actually just replace the screen for you at a repair center, instead ordering a refurb.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Could also be that the screen is or works like tempered/safety glass. You can take a ball peen hammer to the center of a sheet of safety glass with little to no affect. But take the same hammer and strike the edge of the glass and the sheet will crumble like the Yankees in a playoff game.
If your EVO landed on its side when it fell, that could be the cause. It's happened in my office many times with people's iPhones. I find that my Ghost Armor works well to diffuse the smaller bumps, though mine is covered in a rubberized case 80% of the time as well.
Hopefully you get a good replacement.

Seriously question build quality? You're kidding, right? ANY glass will shatter when dropped, period. This has nothing to do with build quality. Would you prefer it to be plastic and have a million scratches on the screen?
Now if you were to complain about the screen separation issues, THAT would be a build quality issue. But NO phone is perfect.
I've dropped my phone dozens of times, many from 3 ft, others from 5 ft, I do have a black rubber case on it that only says htc on the back that I picked up on launch day. so far its never came apart or scratched or anything happened that would make it less than mint. I'm impressed with it and honestly don't see a way to destroy the thing unless I wanted to

Drop glass from 3 ft onto carpet, and see how often it breaks. I venture to guess it'll almost never break. I have never once broken a phone and now my EVO slides off my lap and it shatters. And I have no right to question the quality of it?
Don't get me wrong I love it and can't wait to get another so I can continue to play with it, but seriously.

The sample size is rather small but you're 1/1 so I'd venture a guess as to yes. Angle of impact seems to be the common denominator here, a flaw in the design there is not. $10 says you don't leave it on your lap and stand up to go to lunch again...but if you do report back here so we can hear about it again.
Its also possible your screen/glass might have had an imperfection in it as well . I have heard of glass windows in cars shattering with just the slightest of impacts . Granted they are rare , far and few between . Every once in a while the process of making the glass screws up causing weak points in its structure . Its possible this might be the case with yours . Glass was already weak from the manufacturing process and the small fall was enough to cause it to shatter .
I've dropped my phone from my lap getting out of my truck on asphalt. Thought for sure the screen was toast but just a few scuff marks around the plastic edge. second time it fell from waste height on concrete and that shattered the screen.
Otterbox offers good protection but I can't get over how HUGE the cases are. I ended up with Pt case. Just something to sheild the edges/corners a little better.
Thats why I'm calling bs the phone had to hit the desk or something you could slam the phone on carpet and not break the glass by the way if your at your desk why is the phone in your lap mobile porn or something

Sorry I wasn't very clear with my wording - I meant that a drop of almost 2 metres is quite high. That's taller than I stand. The likelihood of me dropping my phone by holding it above my head is quite slim.
Noooooooooo! A moment of silence for one of our fallen brothers. Just painful to look at.
beautiful, modern art.... 180cm, really? wow
Ouch. With mine on the way from FedEx my heart just went into my throat.
I've dropped my nexus s onto a hard wood floor from about 750 cm and our bathroom tile from maybe 1.2m and I got away without a scratch. Sorry, I feel for you.
(does anyone else see the <br> tags Tapatalk is inserting in my posts? And where's my signature? Sigh...
Is square trade covering them yet? That was the first thing I was going to do before I held it more than 6 inches above a hard surface, check their Android app. I bought one for my nexus s.
@Tung_meister: The screen is not working, completely black. The multi-touch vibrated once. But the phone is still working, judging by the notification sounds, turns on/off.
For the non-metric folks, 180 cm is around 6 feet, so it's a high drop on hard floor. Found someone else on the accessories sub-forum who broke his screen on a drop on the curb.
Comparing the screen with my GNote, the screen edges seem flush with the screen, while the GNote has raised edge (not flush).
Thanks for the kind words, loved the moment of silence comment
@[hfm]: 750 cm, that's quite an impressing house you have with a 7,50m high ceiling ;-) Guess it was 75 cm, right?
Apart from that I don't really think it's the height of the drop that matters most. It's rather the material it's dropped onto and the angle of the impact. Because glass is under a certain tension, you just have to hit the right spot or the right way to shatter it into a thousand pieces. That's the way emergency hammers on buses work.
anyone that doesn't use a case I have no pity for when they complain about dropping it and it breaking
That's pretty much nonsense, right there. You cannot use the display when it's inside a case, and when you are using the phone, you can always drop it and have it fall right on the display. A case can prevent some damaga, but not any!
Can we please observe 2 minutes silence.

I must say, I have dropped my HD2 in my bathroom a number of times and that phone is a brick and not even a scratch. So unfortunate man! Hope you had some insurance on it to get a new one instantly

Is it built to avoid internal damage from such crashes?
Yeah, it'll be fine... Biggest worry is always the screen smashing.
I would assume that if the screen is fine, then the internals are fine. There are not many moving parts appart from the vibrator so it should be fine

Well screen perfectly handled it ^_^ physically internal build you say well sheilded from such things?
One more thing i noticed and unsure if i had it before.... The top of the screen got such like cut artifact like part of the picture cuts (like in bad frame sync games on pc) delay behind.... im on paranoid rom jb with custom kernel tripndtoid which i installed few hours ago....could it be the gpu drivere in this kernel?
There's a video on Youtube of a guy doing a drop test. He basically drops it from various heights onto concrete. Although the screen eventually cracks from a face down hit, it continues to work fine. I wouldn't be too worried
So no worries from drop .... Thanms
graphical artifacts (while sliding the top side of the screen was like cutting it self) its gone now after installined re-packed faux.
Dont worry about it. I have opened my HOX several times and things are pretty tight inside.

Good to know.... the press guy at HTC i think mentioned that they built ONE X to be "hard to break" phone... and used some special plastic which knows to avoid stress and internal damages... but hopefully this engineering also smart to avoid internal damages when it falls right on the face (screen) hehe... think so?
Whenever someone mentions possible damage to their one x, it makes me cringe! Hope its all good for you

Like others have said, if the screen is fine then internals should be fine too. The biggest risk of dropping the One X is breaking its' screen. That is why I use a thin TPU case, with a small lip around the bezel which prevents the screen touching any flat surfaces. It should protect the screen from small drops. And I also don’t have to worry much about placing it face down on a hard surface. Unless you are one of those people who absolutely hate having a case, I highly recommend using one.
The case I use looks pretty decent, better than most other TPU cases out there. The texture on it's back closely resembles the feel and look of the polycarbonate back. It also prevents the camera lens touching the table when rested on its' back. Here are couple of photos of it:

your comment will be appreciated!
Once a HOX is dropped face down it will trigger an internal self destruct mechanism and will burst in flames in exactly 72 hours.

Damn!!! I should stay away from it to not get hurt?

OUCH!!! (the phone fell)

It fell when I tried to put Galaxy Tab Plus into my field jacket. I noticed sound cut off suddenly and my Note 2 fell from 1.2 meters.
Even a TPU case and glass screen protector applied, a scuff formed on the left top (it's not visible when case applied). Fortunately, the screen didn't have any damage.
What if I have the phone unprotected?!

if you have insurance and if your digitier is damaged then replace a new phone or if only the glass lens is damaged then you can just buy stuff online and repair it yourself...this happened to me and ive had hard time replace glass lens it took me 2 hours with very slow movement and careful process. my heart almost stopped beating when putting on new glass lens cheers at least your phone is fine

its even fragiler than ipad, just one drop from high distance, everything goes in pieces D
I havent dropped this phone since I got it on Dec 31st...
Not really luck but the size, weight, and my Otterbox Defender case seems to be an undroppable setup! Honestly even when the phone has slipped its just impossible to drop. Last second fingertips on the corner edge of the phone, side hand pinning to body, etc, all have ended in no drops throughout the most unsuspecting moments... or maybe I am just lucky or "? reaction-arily? gifted"

I've managed to drop my phone with the Defender while putting it back in the holster, unbeknownst to me it tangled with my winter coat (granted, probably not much of a concern in Arizona) and some time later fell out on an elevator's tile floor. Loud thud, but nary a scratch.
It was the first time, and I've had mine since November.

Hi darkshado, I have an unlocked t889v from mobilicity, and phone could work under wind and virgin mobile.
However, signal is unstable indoors, asu frequently drops to 1 or 2, or even no service at all. I would like to activate lte to take full advantage of the virgin mobile's network. Could you please to forward me a draft guide on how to do it? I know the risk but still want a try....thanks~!
btw, the baseband is T889VVLALJ4, ROM is Jedi 9...
I dropped mine in the toilet (after cleaning the toilet) last week. Without hesitation I reached in and tossed it in the laundry hamper. I yanked the otterbox defender off and started drying it off. Pulled the back off and the battery out. Pulled the s pen out and shoved a qtip in the hole. Remarkably the phone was on and functioning befire I pulled the battery. After I gave everything a good wipe down I blew water from behind the home key, power button and volume rocker. There was also trace amounts in the s pen. Phone still works flawlessly. It didnt even hiccup. Makes one wonder how water resistant this phone is. It was in water for 3 seconds or less and nothing happened.
Noted Twice then replied using SGH-T889.
After careful inspection, a tiny damage found on the top-left of the screen. However, it can be covered with a case and the touchscreen isn't affected at all.

As odd as it sounds thank the screen protector. I had screen protector on my htc incredible and had it fall from the holster running and watched it endo beside me for a few steps with not screen damage. Only to remove it after switching carriers and getting a new phone to drop it from about 16 inched and crack the screen.
Im thinking about cutting the stock otterbox defender screen protector off and using one that adheres to the screen. This one doesnt sit flush so I get noise from it contacting the screen as I type and also dust and dirt enter from around the home key.
Note 2, yeah son!
I'm on my second note 2. Dropped the first one from about 1.5 feet without a case and goodbye screen. So moral of the story.... could have been much worse.
