My custom GNex - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Rather than scrap my drop damaged housing, I decided to repaint it. If I am repainting it, might as well make it match the roof of my old caddy lol

Nice! and certainly unique!
Curious about a painted finish like this on a phone housing- how does it feel in-hand compared to a stock case?

It is about the same amount of "grip". I sanded the texture out of the rear cover and don't feel that it is any worse for grip. Keep in mind that the stock housing is painted

Very nice - would you call that candy apple green?

Matalic green was the color on the phone but yes the car roof is candy green

LOL would think that of a green soft case? The way I look at is, I think the GNex is to big in hand with any sort of case, I can sand down and cycle out the other housing if anything happens to this one just like I did before, the difference is, no increase in bulk, no lamination to peal or yellow and it still fits in the dock or holder

Did you just take the housing off completely then paint it?

I was going to paint mine that electric blue of the new Mustangs and 370Z's. But then Verizon gave me a new phone because I complained about the 4G reception and WiFi.

Yes I did. Its the easiest phone to blast apart ever. The only snag was a little plastic keeper for the brass dock contacts, had to snap it off and super glue it back on when I was done. It was plastic welded on originally

LOL, the 1st picture is the housing with no guts in it too

Very nice.

What kind of paint did you use? I have a white nexus and since there are no white extended battery doors I was either going to get a white skin to go overtop of it or paint the battery door to be white.

I sanded it with 400 then used some tamiya primer and then a tamiya matallic green. when I sprayed the battery door the 1st time, the paint did some crazy shrinking, so I sanded it off, then sanded away the texture and repainted

I did this with my old Bionic. Did you use a clear coat? I had issues with mine. I baked it to help cure the clear coat then let it sit for 3 days. Everything was good at first then I decided to leave it on for the day. When I pulled it out a few hours later the fabric texture was imprinted into the clear coat.
I redid it and waited a full week before using but ran into the same problem.

Galaxy Nexus, Diztronic silicone case modified to work with 3800mah Battery

I bought the Hyperion 3800mah battery for my galaxy nexus a few days ago. I got it last night and popped it in, and immidietly missed the grip that I had with the Diztronic case. Hyperion doesn't make a case for the extended battery, so I decided to modify the one I had. Here some pictures:

First what I did was cut out the of the case, the case it self has an edge on the back, and I used this to guide my scissors. I cut the bottom of the case out a little higher than this seam, since the edge of the case and the battery back don't match up.
After that, I laid some duct tape on the outside part of the case, put case on the phone, and fed the duct tape strips through where I cut. then laid the flap on top of the duct tape. I used some electrical tape to finish off the look so it didn't look too bad. The cut out for the camera is kinda ehh, I just guess and checked until I thought it looked fine.
Maybe this will inspire someone to buy a cheap case and do something similar, instead of dealing with a slippery, fat naked phone. If only it wasn't a phone... lol.
That's one way to make this phone look atrocious.

I am all about saving a buck, but you can't be happy with this.
I picked up a few of the 3800 batteries cheaply and had the same issue. I picked up the Seido Extended Case for $30. Fits even the cheapo extended doors just fine!
I can't post the link, because I'm a noob here, but I think you can probably find it yourself...

Thank god I'm a teen and not a businessman, so I can get away with ghettoness. I would be buying that sedio case right away if I was.
try to use a little border to hide the scratched edge.
For sure, no one will ever try to steal your phone !!!
Doesnt seidio make a case specifically for this battery? I used a seidio surface on my dinc and loved it. I would suggest getting one of those for a cleaner look. Very resourceful mod though.

Got the Black Carbon Fiber XO Skins for mine and my wife's gnexs. Shipping took 2 days. The install for these are SUPER easy. Unlike with the clear, you don't have to worry about dust and if you mess up anywhere, you just peel it back and stick it back on. I also used a blow drier to make sure it was all stuck just right. I won't be using a case anymore, just the carbon fiber and the clear screen protector for the front. These have a texture to them and aren't the cheap ones that are printed on ebay
Coupons: sprintxo essentially pays for shipping.

Looks good! I just got my clear protector from your post in the other thread. I have a white nexus and it looks great.

Skin on the front? Or do you mean a screen protector?
@OP, it looks great! Hope it won't leave any sticky residue when after it's being removed.
I was tempted to buy this, then I remembered that I have a pretty good hard case. If I had gotten this, there was no way it'd actually fit in the case.
Sorry, by skin I mean I am using their screen protector. The carbon fiber covers the sides and the back. They say they don't leave anything sticky behind.
Anyone get a Red or Blue that can post a pic so I can add it?
I would love a skin like this but that also adds some protection, something between this and a silicone case.
These things feel pretty strong. I bet they can take a lot
Any comments now that you've had this on for a few months? Any peeling at all? Any scratching, dent/nicks, etc? Getting sick of my case and thinking about ditching it for this. Obviously won't provide drop protection, but I want the scratch protection without having to use one the horrid clear ones.
Still looks good. I haven't dropped it on asphalt or anything, but it seems to hold up well.
It also has a slight texture, I have tried other carbon fiber before that was just slick.
anyone have pix?
I got this skin about 5 months ago. No pealing, though at first it wouldn't stick on the lower beveled edge; I had to hold it on for around 15 min real pain in the ass. I was also fooled into thinking it would completely cover the back of my phone, no slits just 2 pieces it is in fact 5 pieces with gaps. Very disappointed with the appearance.
That being said its a tough skin and I rarely use my case anymore.

I posted 2 in the original post. I would post some more for you but I now have the SGS3. It helps when you install to use a blow drier on the fiber. It seems to kind of melt it down to the phone

Red Galaxy Nexus

I wanted to change the color of my Galaxy Nexus without the added bulk of a case. They never released a white version of the LTE version so a white housing wasn't an option. Only thing I could find were the gray housings for a decent price. SO i figured I would paint my housing red and if I messed it up I could just replace it. I used a Vinyl & Fabric spray found at auto parts stores instead of a spray paint. I used the Vinyl dye before on a Xbox controller and durability was excellent still a year later. Here are the results!
Edit: For those interested first I used Dan1joyce's housing removal YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp6e5w2jkk4. Then remove the speaker grill, three pogo pins, power/volume rocker. Now mask the inside of he housing with blue painters. Mainly just covering the camera and the internal stuff yo don't want painted. Then I used 800 grit sand paper to scuff up the gray painted areas and used rubbing alcohol to remove all the dust and dirt from housing, battery cover , power/volume. I didn't sand to much just enough for the paint to get into.
Now start spraying the paint. I did a coat ever 10 minutes on all 4 parts using very light coats and just making sure no hair or dust was sprayed over. I used almost the whole can. Then let it dry overnight and put it back together!
I used Duplicolor Vinyl/Fabric spray from local auto parts store which has an adhesion promoter in it and it seems to melt into the plastic giving it a good even look.

I done the exact same thing but your one seems a lot more neat.
Did you use heat to mould it around the phone?
How did you cut around the speaker, mic, camera and screen?
Did you take the casing off and apply it like that? or did you just apply it with the casing on the phone?
I wish somebody would start this as a service. I want a royal blue or a matte black.

The only way for it to become a service is if people are willing to send their phone in.
I was thinking of doing it.. but if it picks up its pretty hard for one person to do xx amount of phones. You just cant employ random people.
You cant send people the materials either because they will just mess it up.
I was thinking of renting out a shop or stall when the Olympics starts and then doing the service for people in front of them.... but my current work stops me from doing that.
Looks SWEET MAN!!!

Post up your wrapped G3

As everyone knows this is as minimal as it gets for protection. As I did for my nexus 5 I went to slickwraps and got the leather style. I was surprised it was almost $20 but after applying it I'm happy. The G3 felt slippery before but it has much more grip now.
Post up your pics of your wrapped phone if you like to share and give it a review.

I'm curios to see what the white one looks like!

Brushed lugs

Well here it is but still unfinished. After getting all these fine lines on the lugs I just decided to give it a brushed look. Only had 220 grit sand paper at the moment just to see how she would look and I think it looks better with brushed lugs. Gonna go over it with 400 or 600 later to smoothen out the lines to make it match the sides better.

is there any visual tutorial to do it correctly? am afraid I killed the beauty of the watch, tia
Hey guys, I have gotten to attempt this on a Huawei watch, and it ended up pretty nice, There were a few things that I could have improved. I found that using paper tape, the medical one, can be very useful. All you have to do is cover the screen and inner rim with paper tape, along with the back glass. You can also cover up other parts that you don't want to touch. Start at a coarser sandpaper and make your way up, I used a 120 grit I believe and it wasn't too fine. Keep in mind that the finer it is the more scratch prone it is. Repeat process after it scratched up again. If you want you can add some kind of polish, but i'm not sure how that would work out.
That looks really nice! Mine's black or else I'd do that too. I put a plain leather adjustable strap on mine, because the one it came with fit my husband fine, but it's just too clunky for a woman's wrist, IMO.
