I bought the Hyperion 3800mah battery for my galaxy nexus a few days ago. I got it last night and popped it in, and immidietly missed the grip that I had with the Diztronic case. Hyperion doesn't make a case for the extended battery, so I decided to modify the one I had. Here some pictures:

First what I did was cut out the of the case, the case it self has an edge on the back, and I used this to guide my scissors. I cut the bottom of the case out a little higher than this seam, since the edge of the case and the battery back don't match up.
After that, I laid some duct tape on the outside part of the case, put case on the phone, and fed the duct tape strips through where I cut. then laid the flap on top of the duct tape. I used some electrical tape to finish off the look so it didn't look too bad. The cut out for the camera is kinda ehh, I just guess and checked until I thought it looked fine.
Maybe this will inspire someone to buy a cheap case and do something similar, instead of dealing with a slippery, fat naked phone. If only it wasn't a phone... lol.
That's one way to make this phone look atrocious.

I made some modifications. Got rid of the tape on the back side, and put some red duct tape over it for some flair. Ugh still doesn't have a "clean" look...but I think it looks a little better...eh?

Seidio Extended Case
I am all about saving a buck, but you can't be happy with this.
I picked up a few of the 3800 batteries cheaply and had the same issue. I picked up the Seido Extended Case for $30. Fits even the cheapo extended doors just fine!
I can't post the link, because I'm a noob here, but I think you can probably find it yourself...
Bro you had me up until you put tape on your phone.

Thank god I'm a teen and not a businessman, so I can get away with ghettoness. I would be buying that sedio case right away if I was.
try to use a little border to hide the scratched edge.
For sure, no one will ever try to steal your phone !!!
Doesnt seidio make a case specifically for this battery? I used a seidio surface on my dinc and loved it. I would suggest getting one of those for a cleaner look. Very resourceful mod though.

Wondering if anyone knows of anywhere to get either like a stainless steel or aluminum backplate for the evo? (to replace battery door, not just go over it)
I've been looking everywhere, and since seeing the stainless steel one for the iphone4 just thought it would look bad ass.
I will pay if someone can make one, it would just be awesome to have a brushed metal back that matched the kickstand!
Thanks!
You know, no matter how good it would look, it'd probably totally screw up your reception.
What if instead, a metal looking plastic backplate? lol
I remember seeing THIS a a few days back. Not sure if this is what you are looking for.
What would be/ is the benefit of an aluminium case like that?

I guess protection? Looks super ugly to me though....but hey, to each his own...
A metal battery door would be AWESOME.
It would look neat and flashy, until you started getting nicks and scratches on it. (My ipod ended up looking pretty beat up, craptacular, when I scratched the heck out of the back.)
But with the location of the radios/ antenna.... would it really mess with reception that much? Most are located at the top or the bottom of the phone I thought? Not right in the middle.
@napster
Thanks, but I meant like a metal piece that replaces the back part of the phone u take off to reveal the battery
Any one find one or willing to fabricate??

That would be pretty awesome. I'd go for it.
I would prefer a wood grain battery cover instead.

That would b awesome, but not that particular one....

what would be most awesomer would be a black chrome brushed aluminum back cover !
ll, hmm, depends on the price, but if it was a brushed aluminum and black in color, "an actual door, not just a case" id pay 20-30 plus shipping for it
A brilliant idea that would be awesome is a metal backplate , that is similar to the Blackberry Storm's battery door . Granted the same design wouldnt work since the back piece snaps into the phone but a metal door that allowed you to remove the battery without having to take the whole back cover off and putting extra strain on the retaining clips . Just some random thinking for those out there that swap batteries religiously
That would b awesome, like a 2 piece door, one that for into the other that the smaller one popped off right where the battery was....

I use a magnet mount I got in a truckstop -- it had a stainless steel tab that I stick to the back of the phone -- it then sticks to the magnet when I put it up there, and is pretty secure during travel. If the entire back were stainless, it would work much better.....
A brushed aluminum one would look sooo sick.
I would pay $30-40 for a nicely done one.
only using it for an example,

Not so much. Most stainless steel is not magnetic.

i don't need metal, but heck, even thicker/sturdier plastic would be nice. the backplate feels like it's going to snap in half every time i remove it.
the back of my old hero, on the otherhand, is like a tank
Has anyone devised a way to make the battery cover more grippy? I can't use a case because of the Touchstone mod I did, but I also don't want the back of the phone to look terrible.
Looking for ideas, anyone have some?
Sorry but unrelated really but what is a touchstone mod?
I got a 2000Mah battery this morning with a different cover and the phone feels much better in my hand. I totally get what you are saying about it being hard to grip.
I took the inductive charging coil off the back cover of an old Palm Pre and stuck it to the battery cover of the Galaxy Nexus. A little copper tape connects to the inside of the pogo pins. There's a nice guide here on XDA somewhere.
A case can't be used because the air gap would be too much for the coils, phone wouldn't charge at all.
I have a carbon fiber skin from a company called XGear and its great. I don't like making the phone any bigger with a case and wanted to give it a better feel in the hand. I'm pretty picky about what I put on my phone and I am very satisfied.
I had to use a heat gun to put it on perfect but it looks nice.
I don't have any pictures on my tablet but if you look it up they have pictures or if you PM me I can email you some.
Good luck.

I would just use the battery cover skin. Is it grippy though? If someone makes a rubber-type skin for the battery lid I would like to see.
I wouldn't say its grippy like a rubber case would be but it definitely gives the phone a more tactile feel. I am extremely happy...
One thing to note is they have re designed it since I bought and it actually covers more of the phone than mine does.

Thanks for the pictures
How grippy would you say the skin is, over the stock battery lid? I don't think I'm looking for much, just something more so that I don't drop the thing.
What's interesting is the part that makes the phone easier to hold onto is not so much the carbon fiber back as it is the sides. The back definitely helps though. I don't really know how to describe it other than to say my GF does not have a skin or case on her nexus and it definitely feels slippery in comparison to mine.

I wonder where I can find a thin sheet of clear self-adhesive silicon, I could just cut out exactly what I want and save a few bucks....
Too slippy? -> Skateboard tape.
Spray some plastic dip on it. About 6 layers should do. I believe that's what was done with the nexus s when it was released.

I figured it was about time to ask everyone to show off their case with stickers, their fancy paint mods, cool clips, holsters, docks or whatever you like to use with or mod on or around the use of your DInc2!
Here's what I got.
First my ever so slightly modded dock for using my DInc2 as an alarm clock. All I really did was buy a $5 speaker set off Amazon and cut it so the phone would fit in it.

Then I have my car dock made based on something I saw in the Eris forums way back with hooks to hang it from my ashtray, and a little Sugru to pad the "feet" so it doesn't slide too much when I rally race my Pup around the corners. The rubber bands are to provide traction for the phone so I don't need to build sides for the "dock". This thing works amazing!
Please share ANY gear you love and/or modded to work for you!
Binder clips FTW.
DIY Extended Battery TPU case.
I made this case myself after I got the OEM extended battery. It was originally a HTC branded TPU case. I simply carved out the back, which allows the new, larger back door to bump out. I REALLY wish that I did not get white.
This was hard. I had a good xacto knife from Utrecht, and probably spent an hour trying to shave and sand it... and i still think it looks crappy. Cutting through TPU is tough. Next time I would be interested to see if I can heat the knife up somehow... but the problem with doing this that if you make a mistake you can trash the case. It's hard to know how heat would affect things. Maybe next time I could try boiling the case to soften it up before cutting. However, that could trash the case, so I don't know if it would work.
So you can do this, but making it look good (and not rough around the edges) is quite difficult. Cutting anything that is not a straight line is really hard.
A 2nd effort I made with a different TPU case resulted in me destroying a case.
However, it works great. This case is now a bumper.
Pics are attached, happy to answer any questions.
I think you did a great job with that. I'm inspired to try it myself with an old tpu.
I wonder if a soldering iron would smooth out the edges, or maybe a dremel?
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
If I had to guess, the soldering iron would be best. That said, Orbison almost certainly going to char the case.
I would like to try a hot knife, that might actually work really well. Again, a white case is not ideal.

I cut it with a dremmel type tool. I've made more cuts in it since then to free up more real estate on the screen. I have seen people use Sugru to line the edges for a more custom look, but it's not necessary.
Really, the sound from that thing is quite good especially for the price. You can even take it with you if you put a few AA batteries in it. It folds up to a nice little cube for travel.

Nice, I am defiantly gonna look into doing this.

I'm a prototype plastic injection mold builder and I trim plastic all day the best way to cut out the back of the case is to use a pencil type grinder dremel etc.. Grind out the back and leave your trim line alittle full then come back with some course grit sandpaper or a file and your lines will be dead smooth.. Just take it slow

I really like the concept. I especially wanted something like this on the Samsung Galaxy Note, as it was rather big and hard to handle with one hand. Always feeling that you could drop it while trying to stretch your fingers over to reach and loosen your grip on the phone.

Got mine yesterday and I like it. Great case for $6.99 shipped. Looks nice, decent protection, and the kick stand works well. The only thing I don't like is that the back gets even hotter while using for an extended amount of time. Seems like the case covers too much and there's no place for the heat to flow.

Yes, it leaves it open. I've used my ear piece and my usb cable with no problems.
I bought the case for my GS3 and it works very well. Easy on, easy off.
No problems so far with my Xtremeguard screen protector. And dust in the case hasn't been a problem even though I work construction.
I never knew about the "sure grip" feature that the kickstand doubles as! I will be using that for sure.

Well, im using a pretty cheap one with kickstand which i really like. Found it on ebay at about USD$7.00. Its double layered, and protects the phone A LOT. Im also using a Zagg Screen Protector too. I want to keep my phone as close to new as possible.

Q&A or Accessories would have been the correct sub-forum for this thread, maybe a mod will move it for us.
I started with a OB Defender, moved to the Trident Kraken, and now I use the OB Commuter. I also have a skin that is made for a 3rd party extended battery, but I have never used the battery or skin.
OB and trident are so expensive lol i feel like any hard case would be fine.. i dont drop my phone lol and $50 is pretty crazy...
I have this case:

Well.. It depends. If you drop your phone right now and bust the screen you are going to spend way more fixing it. If you drop/scratch/ding your body/screen but dont break it then you are stuck looking at a flawed/ugly phone. With OB or Trident you are most likely not going to have these problems. I have dropped mine over and over but under the case is a flawless phone that looks like it just came out of the box. And under my ZAGG is a screen that has never been touched by a human finger. When I go to sell it, the price will reflect that.
Additionally the port covers are a must for me and are mostly only found on those cases. Just search for the threads on "wont charge / usb not working / etc". My old roommate had to send hers in for a replacement because of issues with the charging port.
You get what you pay for, for sure.
I use the Rearth Ringke Slim, and the Ringbo screen protector from the same company. The case is very slim and low profile, but probably doesn't offer the best protection from a major drop.
