Wondering if anyone knows of anywhere to get either like a stainless steel or aluminum backplate for the evo? (to replace battery door, not just go over it)
I've been looking everywhere, and since seeing the stainless steel one for the iphone4 just thought it would look bad ass.
I will pay if someone can make one, it would just be awesome to have a brushed metal back that matched the kickstand!
Thanks!
You know, no matter how good it would look, it'd probably totally screw up your reception.
What if instead, a metal looking plastic backplate? lol
I remember seeing THIS a a few days back. Not sure if this is what you are looking for.
What would be/ is the benefit of an aluminium case like that?

I guess protection? Looks super ugly to me though....but hey, to each his own...
A metal battery door would be AWESOME.
It would look neat and flashy, until you started getting nicks and scratches on it. (My ipod ended up looking pretty beat up, craptacular, when I scratched the heck out of the back.)
But with the location of the radios/ antenna.... would it really mess with reception that much? Most are located at the top or the bottom of the phone I thought? Not right in the middle.
@napster
Thanks, but I meant like a metal piece that replaces the back part of the phone u take off to reveal the battery
Any one find one or willing to fabricate??

That would be pretty awesome. I'd go for it.
I would prefer a wood grain battery cover instead.

That would b awesome, but not that particular one....

what would be most awesomer would be a black chrome brushed aluminum back cover !
ll, hmm, depends on the price, but if it was a brushed aluminum and black in color, "an actual door, not just a case" id pay 20-30 plus shipping for it
A brilliant idea that would be awesome is a metal backplate , that is similar to the Blackberry Storm's battery door . Granted the same design wouldnt work since the back piece snaps into the phone but a metal door that allowed you to remove the battery without having to take the whole back cover off and putting extra strain on the retaining clips . Just some random thinking for those out there that swap batteries religiously
That would b awesome, like a 2 piece door, one that for into the other that the smaller one popped off right where the battery was....

I use a magnet mount I got in a truckstop -- it had a stainless steel tab that I stick to the back of the phone -- it then sticks to the magnet when I put it up there, and is pretty secure during travel. If the entire back were stainless, it would work much better.....
A brushed aluminum one would look sooo sick.
I would pay $30-40 for a nicely done one.
only using it for an example,

Not so much. Most stainless steel is not magnetic.

i don't need metal, but heck, even thicker/sturdier plastic would be nice. the backplate feels like it's going to snap in half every time i remove it.

Dont think you can buy them yet mate. Im looking for one too! Im sick of the portruding Galaxy S logo on the back and dont like the mock carbon fibre look.
Yeah... I would love a new back without the Galaxy S logo. The faux carbon fiber pattern has grown on me but it really wouldn't go with the argyle TPU case that I'm most likely going to get.
It's like most phones are designed by two teams of industrial designers. One wants to make the phone as sleek and minimalistic as possible, then the other comes in afterwards and slaps as much branding and gaudiness as possible.
Anyone want to sell let me know I needed one bad thank you.
just get a TPU case and a back cover is not really necessary. Maybe get one thats not translucent...
You should be fine for a while with just a standard solid color TPU case, the back of the captivate has a sliding piece that actually holds the battery and everything in place with the back off.
Hell, it even looks cool to have the insides exposed with a clear TPU case!

Just order one from Samsung
I called Samsung today and ordered a back cover. $10.81 and I should have it in 3-5 business days. I was already registered on their website, so I just went to the service request section and chose "other." I was given a phone number and ticket number. It still took about 15 minutes on the phone, but I got it ordered.
would love a real carbon fibre matt back cover!
From the simplicity of the back cover it seems that it wouldn't take much to just fabricate one. The speaker cutouts could be basically any design with the right hand and a dremel tool.
It would look really cool if someone made one from anodized aluminum. There are two contact points on the back though, does this have to do with the antenna for the device?

I think it does. It may not, but I know before I'd take the cover off and the phone wouldn't connect to the network. It may just be a coincidence though.
some phones do use the cover for an antenna, i havent noticed any ill effects without it. ive software bricked many times and ill leave the cover off in the trouble shooting and reflashing process, phone still gets signal.
ok i just dismantled my phone (seriously). there is a cast metal chassis that is atached to the screen. there is copper plating on the back of the plasitic frame in a strip that stretches from one end of the phone to the other under the screws that are above the battery box and appear to help form a connection from the board to the chassis and connect to the round pin that contacts the back cover.
in my experience it appears to be a ground point probably for shielding. the second contact is probably for redundancy, it directly goes to the board but im not going to atempt to trace it's path.
the cover seems to be aluminum for anyone that has the idea of making a new one. or stripping the black off. the galaxy s is a feature stamped into the back. you may be able to mill or file or sand it off but beware you may go through.
Just got off the phone with Samsung. Seems they are out of backplates for this phone at the moment and will be contacted when they're available again.
Stupid me, accidentally dropped the dumb backplate when switching batteries and got a small dent.
You know what would be awesome? Getting a Giorgio Armani i9010 backplate for my phone.
Has anyone devised a way to make the battery cover more grippy? I can't use a case because of the Touchstone mod I did, but I also don't want the back of the phone to look terrible.
Looking for ideas, anyone have some?
Sorry but unrelated really but what is a touchstone mod?
I got a 2000Mah battery this morning with a different cover and the phone feels much better in my hand. I totally get what you are saying about it being hard to grip.
I took the inductive charging coil off the back cover of an old Palm Pre and stuck it to the battery cover of the Galaxy Nexus. A little copper tape connects to the inside of the pogo pins. There's a nice guide here on XDA somewhere.
A case can't be used because the air gap would be too much for the coils, phone wouldn't charge at all.
I have a carbon fiber skin from a company called XGear and its great. I don't like making the phone any bigger with a case and wanted to give it a better feel in the hand. I'm pretty picky about what I put on my phone and I am very satisfied.
I had to use a heat gun to put it on perfect but it looks nice.
I don't have any pictures on my tablet but if you look it up they have pictures or if you PM me I can email you some.
Good luck.

I would just use the battery cover skin. Is it grippy though? If someone makes a rubber-type skin for the battery lid I would like to see.
I wouldn't say its grippy like a rubber case would be but it definitely gives the phone a more tactile feel. I am extremely happy...
One thing to note is they have re designed it since I bought and it actually covers more of the phone than mine does.

Thanks for the pictures
How grippy would you say the skin is, over the stock battery lid? I don't think I'm looking for much, just something more so that I don't drop the thing.
What's interesting is the part that makes the phone easier to hold onto is not so much the carbon fiber back as it is the sides. The back definitely helps though. I don't really know how to describe it other than to say my GF does not have a skin or case on her nexus and it definitely feels slippery in comparison to mine.

I wonder where I can find a thin sheet of clear self-adhesive silicon, I could just cut out exactly what I want and save a few bucks....
Too slippy? -> Skateboard tape.
Spray some plastic dip on it. About 6 layers should do. I believe that's what was done with the nexus s when it was released.

This was not received purposely, my guess is that they packaged up the items and mistakingly sent me somebody elses cause the tracking number they sent me doesn't match what's on the package. I ordered a white carbon fiber battery cover. But I gotta tell ya, this thing is DEAD SEXY! I'm not even mad that I didn't get what I paid for.

Fit and finish:
The finish is beautiful! I'd say the cover is a bit darker than pictured...when I seen it I didn't think gold I though burnt copper. Very nice color and it's accented with the vertical brush marks which makes it look even better. The cherries on top are the chrome trim around the bezel and the chrome trim around the camera/speaker/flash openings. Also, no gaudy "Galaxy S III" name on the back, it has the SAMSUNG logo embossed on the back and it looks like it was machined, polished aluminum. Very nice! Snapping it on to my phone I was impressed at how precise the fit is. The camera is flush with it's opening with the speaker and flash recessed and looking nice with the chrome trim surrounding them. The chrome bezel lines up perfectly with the bezel of the front side of the phone and doesn't clash nearly as much as I thought it would, it blends in nicely. The charger port cut out is spot on as is the headphone jack cutout. After I stopped drooling the first thing I noticed is added weight makes the GS3 feel much more substantial and solid. So far so good.
Cases:
The only cases I have right now are a Fosmon S type TPU and an Incipio Silicrylic Dual Pro. Apparently this cover adds a little girth cause the TPU case didn't work out. I got it on but it would not wrap around the screen on both sides, one side would but the other would just reach to the edge of the bezel. No bueno. The Incipio fit, but it's very tight. That being said, case fit will be hit or miss.
Functionality:
One concern was signal interference. Cell signal strength seems uneffected but wifi is weaker by 1 bar at the furthest point in my house from my router. I haven't tested NFC yet but will later on. Mobile data connection hasn't seemed to take a hit, based on the updates I just completed for a few apps. Haven't tested bluetooth yet either. So far any signal degredation is minimal and insignificant.
This is the first time I'm actually happy the company messed up my order!
I've been wanting to snag one of these, thanks for the write up!

My bad
The black aluminium back cover I have seems to be killing signal pretty badly, or I'm getting really unlucky after my water incident.

After using mine the last two days in varying environments in and around my house as well as out in the community...I have to agree with you. It's too bad cause damn that thing was sexy! But there's a new battery cover in town and I don't miss this one at all...white carbon fiber :good:
Hello everyone,
I really liked the bumper idea, however i didn't feel like spending nearly $100 on a bumper (not yet, anyway).
I found one on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Luxury-Alum...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item43b18a7ec8
It looks nowhere near as good as the Draco one, however it does look very nice. It seems to be protective, I've dropped it a couple times and it hasn't gotten severely scratched. No damage to the phone. At $12 it's pretty decent protection. It'll get scratched, but you can easily/cheapily replace it.
Though, I got bored with just the bumper (I get bored way too easily) so I decided to try to get a backplate as well.
Backplate is also dirt cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/19071832365...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I bought a blue one, a black one, and a red one to match my outfit. I also bought more bumper colors as well.
The challenge:
Apparently this backplate was a few millimeters thicker than the original. 2-3mm, maybe more. This made getting the bumper on a real challenge, and because of it I messed up my Invisible Shield HD (you'll see what I did in the pic :/). However, once you can actually get it on (takes patience and time) it looks really great. It feels good, too. Feels really really secure.
Drops/Protection:
To start off, the back cover does get scratched. It's really shiny, so they kind of show depending on what color you get. I got a bright red, I've kept it in good condition. For only $7, you could just replace it if it gets too scratched up. Moving on, the bumper seems to be a good protector as well. It's very secure, feels sturdy. I dropped it off the table and it bounced (it was on a thin carpet at a restaurant). No damage. Went ahead and did it again just to show the person I was with, worked pretty well.
Here's some pictures of the blue bumper with the red backplate. Note: I have a good camera but I'm not good with the settings and stuff, apologies if the pictures don't look amazing.

Love the look. Very Cobra-esque
Im a fan of the bumper w/alt back cover look aswell.
Front was still red when I took the pics, that why no frontal shot on the white/green combo. Doesn't have the same look without the white front. Lol
For bumpers I've got black, green and silver. Waiting on my blue and red still. Battery covers I've stock, stock wrapped in carbon fiber which I want to rewrap to recreate the moto RAZR HD carbon fiber design , red "croc" leather, n dual metal panels in green/white. With a bunch more on the way

Where did you get the nice back covers? The green one is sick!
found it! http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-Frame...r-Door-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-i9300-/310445655
I actually got all my battery covers from amazon. Usually thru seller handheld items. Takes about 3-4 weeks to arrive if ordered thru them
If you buy a rear cover cradle type case it's pretty easy (maybe) to glue some covering and include a flap.

How does the finish look like?
hand made cases is always good u just need time to finish it all . thats why people prefer buying one than making one
thanks look cool but the time invested seems a bit much for finding something similar for $4. On the otherhand i am always up for DIY projects and i always thought of doing something similar to this for a case but adding a LED circuit of some sort into it. That case would def not be found anywhere else.
Time investment isn't a consideration for people intelligent enough to have thrown away their TV sets. <snicker> <snicker> Some folk prefer to spend such time doing hobby stuff like leather carving, RC model building, glass blowing, pottery, sewing, computer graphics, writing, reading, and so on and so forth.
Adding LED or LCD to a case might be fun. I can't imagine what I would hook them up to though. As indicator lights they would be redundant. Maybe as text scrollers they might be interesting. They sure would add a lot of bulk for sure! I can't really fathom any use for it. <shrug>
Such a thing like this doesn't have to be made from leather. I chose leather because I wanted to recap/learn about leather carving but gluing cuts from an old pair of Levis onto some hard plastic or cardboard for the front and onto a cheap-o back shell-case for the back could work. Furs too! I have a few faun skins (pelts) that I was thinking about using for my Galaxy Note. And also the covering doesn't need to incorporate a flip cover front part. Just the back would do. And in that case starting out with a white one and spray-painting or air-brushing could produce some interesting results! Using sculpey and sculpey-like products on a flat surface is easy and fun too!
Here's a progress update on mine. This is from about a week ago. The next step will be finishing the edges a bit and adding an inner surface which will be hard like a door and covered with padded microcloth.

NomNom, advice? As in "do not swallow!" or the likes? I dunno. Some phone manufacturer designs incorporate an antenna in the rear cover. So if the case you select replaces that cover, make sure it has the antenna connections.
