Fragility of the Dash
I am new in this forum and i am considering buying this phone. I need a phone that will last me at least a YEAR and a cheap smartphone. This seems to be a good phone. The problem is that i have heard many people breaking the lcd screen . How fragile is this phone? If it is that fragile of a phone, please recommend a good cheap screen protector. Thanx
I personally think the phone is built very well, and is quite solid.
No phone is meant to be dropped, but it does happen from time to time by accident of course.
The bigger the screen, the more chance it has to crack.
I have dropped my Dash twice on concrete in the case, no problem..
If I had dropped it outside of the case, chances are it would probably crack the screen at least one of those times.
Smartphones are not meant to be slipped into the back pocket, their target audience is the business person.
I agree with you guys, but a silicone skin is in part like to buy an insurance. I´ve dropped accidentally my dash a couple of times and the story would have been different if no skin is wrapping my phone.
Investment of 5 bucks is worth.
I droped my dash a few times and is still working, one thing i did was get myself a case to cover the phone, i hate when the screen gets scratch when you have it on your pocket. But overall personally the dash its a really good and reliable phone.
Great Phone
This phone is the best ive had ever... before this one was a blackberry pearl, hated it. I have loved every second of owning my dash. got it for 50 bucks and have dropped it on a couple of occasions, just dings and dents on the hard plastic/rubber casin, thats it... nothin wrong with the screen
p.s. runnin rickwyatt's newest rom and it is freakin awesome
I am probably the most anal person you would ever meet when it comes to my phones (as an example I have phones well over 5 years old that look brand new). No scratches, dents or dings will do. I bought a hard shell cover that snaps over the entire phone and I use a scratch proof screen cover. I have on occasion dropped my Dash and it never has had a problem.
This is a good phone, I dropped it a few times and works perfect still... Haha and especially if you upload the new rom you will rock it straight pimpin haha...
I live a little rough, and where I go, Dash goes.
When it falls out of my lap as I get out of my truck, and it lands on asphalt it seems to be okay, though I hold my breath till I see it function. It has slowly collected dings in the chrome edge. My truck is a bit high, to be fair.
If the alarm goes off in the middle of the night and you fling it with all your semi-conscious might because the end button wore out and you cant turn it off, however, it will probably break. Depends on your arm, I suppose.
It is not fragile compared to your average phone, but it has glass parts and they have their limits. As for the buttons losing function, I do use the bechooie out of it all day, every day. A lot.
Get insurance, take care of it. Respect your tool.
I had the same reservations about this phone as I considered it over a Blackberry Curve this past November. I googled on it and the stories of the cracked screens really made me nervous. People were stating that they would just crack on their own it seemed.
But since Suncom ran out of inventory on the Curve during that time, it narrowed my choices and I really liked the features of the HTC S621, so I decided to go with it.
So far (knock on wood), the screen has held up just fine. I even dropped it once on our very unforgiving hardwood floor, that rests on top of a concrete slab. It was not in any sort of protective case. It fell hard enough for the battery cover and and battery to fall out. I just knew that was it for my phone. But I picked it up, looked at the screen, no cracks. Reinstalled the battery and turned it on, everything functioning the same. Of course every drop could have a different result, depending how it lands and such. I may not get so lucky if that happens again.
Going back to all the nightmare stories about the screen cracking. I'm wondering if these were earlier versions of the HTC S620's issued by T-Mobile. Perhaps with later revisions of the HTC S620's or S621's they fixed what was ever causing the cracks to occur.
Anyways, I love the flexibility and the level of customization that can be done with this phone. I've already flashed my phone many times, and have tried all sorts of stuff on it. This phone is great for people who really like the ability to tweak their phones.
Thank you,
Tim
I don't know why people think the S620/Dash is "fragile"; mine has held up wonderfully. The only thing that is remotely fragile is the screen, which WILL break if you hit it hard enough (as it does on EVERY phone). The good news is that the screens are pretty cheap on eBay (US $25), and they are decently easy to replace. I made a tidy profit repairing and reselling a friend's Dash that he smashed while he was drunk.
I have owned my dash for a year and a half and have had no problems. I think a lot of the cracked screens were from back pockets and tight jeans...lol. I always use the pouch and have dropped it a few times. Nothing has ever broken, even the time I got out of my truck with the phone in my lap and it fell and I ended up punting it a good 8 feet with the battery going one way and the cover and phone another. Treat it well (most of the time) and it will last.
what a GREAT TOUGH phone
i have dropped my dash 3 or 4 times.. hard too! i have seen it land on its edge and once face dowm... not a thing happened to it except a ding where it hit on the cornner,, and the face looks great... not to mention,, the phone itself rocks too... (as long as you ditch the T-MO ROM) lots to do with it, and holds a good charge...
well worth the $$$$$
I dropped my Dash a few times on the concrete and it never got anything more than some scratched on the silver outer band.
I decided to do a little test for you all. So this weekend I ran my Dash over with my car just to tell you all what would happen. (Yeah, that's why I did it. I knew there was a reason.) It broke. The LCD is busted and the body no longer fits perfectly together. The middle of the keyboard looks a little indented as well. I can still make and receive calls, even via bluetooth.
Now since I helped you all, anyone want to help me get a new one? I don't mean to hijack the thread (and I've read a few others on the subject.) Am I pretty much hosed at this point ore should I try sending it to one of the repair places like pocketpctechs.com?
How to remove single scratch from screen?

Mine has buncha little ones but dont distract from a beautiful machine
Most commercial scratch coverups are liquid acrylic-based. Even some liquid floor polishes (like "Future" in the US) can be used to hide some scratches. If it bothers you that much, there are people on eBay selling full housing replacements for the phone.
Try to use toothpaste, I heard that it works just run a little toothpaste and brush for a few minutes on the screen and then wipe it off. Usually this helps out quite a bit so give it a try.
Depending on how deep the scratch is, there are different methods you can use.
If you use Future to cover it up, be aware that water dissolves it.
My screen Died!!
Hi, my Dash screen turned completly white with a Black Stain in the middle like ink..does this means my screen died completley or do u think there is anything I can do to fix it?? I think something got burned inside...
It sounds like your lcd is broken. It should look like a puddle almost. I imagine you hit it or something. That does not have to be the case. It could just happen. that's wha they do sometimes when they go black like that. There is nothing you can do to repair that. Replace the lcd or the phone. That's it.
Ive only had mine since the Saturday before last and already I have a tiny scuff on the lens and a hairline scratch on the screen. I've not dropped, manhandled or in any way mistreated the handset and I keep it in my jeans pocket with no other items....I can't for the life of me work out how this has happened. Luckily It's going back to T-Mobile as I'm not happy with the headphone loudness...unfortunately it will spoil my enjoyment of the device a little as I'm going to be constantly worrying about scratches .appearing from nowhere.
Just thought I'd let you guys know that it might be wise to get a case and screen protector for your Desire and not assume that careful handling will prevent it getting irritating scratches or marks.
I have not received mine yet (it should be tomorrow), but I got same experience like yours with my HTC Kaiser.
I put it in my jeans pocket with nothing else, but yeah ... got scratches and the LENS cover is dirty which you cannot clean it.
I could buy the back part where the lens cover reside, but that's 30 euro in cost.
So, now, I bought a "seal" type of pouch for my upcoming HTC Desire
http://www.fommy.co.uk/view-full-page.asp?divid=Google&cat=Cases&skuno=82280
I already received it, it is soft leather and look nice. It should cover the whole device with slide open on top.
And I will buy screen protector later from martinshields.com (bit expensive, but it never let me down on my HTC Kaiser, Touch Dual, and Nintendo DSi). Strong, clear, thin and NO BUBBLES!

Similar situation with me - a few tiny scratches on the screen. Have to look hard to see them, but they're there. Waiting on screen protectors.
Just in case your getting confused... The screen has a cross hatch set of lines in it... Its part of the multitouch hardware i think. you can only see it in some angles of light. Same with the gridded dots.
Though i did buy a cheap felt pouch to keep it safe untill the PDAir cases come out.
I had a spare screen protector from my Milestone i just cut it to size and used that, far better than not having one at all, even though my old phone the Milestone had gorilla glass which they say you can't scratch i still never trusted it.
put it in a pouch.
Just cos there's no keys, pens etc. in your pocket, does not mean there's no fluff, grit or something else in there that will scratch the screen when it's pressed against your leg. all it takes is a tiny particle of grit or sand to get between the lining of your pocket and the screen and it'll scratch it to buggery!
I put an old Hero screen protector on mine, its covered the main screen portion but not the bezel area, waiting on my official screen protector though!
lets hope zagg release their invisible shield soon. those things are awesome!
I am going to try buy these official screen protectors

I thought it had the same glass screen as the HD2?
They have uploaded video of someone using keys and knives on an HD2 screen to try and scratch it and have failed...
@leoni1980
You had hd2 if I remember correctly?
I consider buying desire, could you compare overall build quality of this two devices? Also, is call quality in desire better than hd 2?
One more question:
In a phone call, does proximity sensor works like one on hd2 or iphone? Or do you must turn the screen on/off manualy?
Thanks.

The screen turns off when you lift the phone to your face in a call, and turns back on when you bring it down.
The build quality is as good I think, although this opinion is somewhat tainted by the fact that under the same circumstances my HD2 never developed a single scratch or scuff. I have a few tiny nicks on my camera lens already which is incredibly annoying since it is literally just 11 days of usage....one would expect a phone kept purely in a trouser pocket on its own to endure longer than a week and a half before developing marks.....
I'm really quite put off by this. When I get my replacement it'll be going straight in a gel case, though lord knows what I will use to protect the lens (which is clearly very susceptible to damage).
This is why I always say: use a pouch and use a screen protector! And e.g. when placing the phone on a hard surface, use the pouch as protection (read: put the phone on top of the pouch or keep the phone inside the pouch).
Mobiles are becoming disposable objects more and more. People use them for two years and then get rid of them (in the garbage bin). So not all people care about scratches etc. They will probably think the pouch and screen protector is nonsense.
Btw, getting a scratch doesn't nescecarily say something about the quality of the phone. In my experience getting a scratch on the phone is usually just bad luck. E.g. I had my Omnia for half a year, no scratches whatsoever. And my Hero was scratched the first week (even when I am so carefull with my stuff). Build quality of the Hero is much better than the Omnia imho (Omnia is all plastic, and chrome paint etc usually damages quickly). It only takes one silly moment to get a scratch unfortunately.
I always sell my phones after some time, every scratch is less value!
Guys Guys...It's a phone, scratch the baby up a bit let her live a little, all you are doing is keeping it tidy for the next owner, my phones are f**ked by the time the next all singing handset comes out so it gives me an excuse to buy the next one.
You might get 50 quid less by sending it off to envirofone or whatever but who cares it's only a phone and does not need leather fluffy cases
ronnyuk, you took the words out of my mouth. Spending time opening cases or sliding in and out of a pouch isnt worth it. Get past the first few scratches and then you can enjoy you phone without the worry. No scratches on mine yet though. Somehow I don't think the desire is going to stand up to what my touch pro went through. That was one seriously tough phone. I have dents in my wall from that baby.
RaptorRVL,
Did you specifically buy a pouch for your HTC Desire?
Or is it a used one from your other device?
If possible, let me know which one and where did you buy the pouch.
As I noted above, I got simple and nice soft-leather pouch from Fommy.co.uk, but if your pouch is nicer I will change

The Desire screen is certainly alot harder than the Touch HD due, I assume, to the different technologies. Thus I am hoping to get away without a protective screen - which I could never seem to get on the HD perfectly.
I was just wondering though whether, if the worst came to the worst, and my Desire does get scratched can you use a Displex ( http://www.displex.com ) type scratch remover? Worked very well on my early non-touch screen phones but clearly would not on the soft finish of the HD.
Anyone know whether OK on the capacactive Desire screen - still have half a tube left?

I got this one :
http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160415564575&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
It's super cheap, 4 euros. It's for the nexus but fits the Desire very nicely (same size). Perhaps it could have been a few mm longer, that would have been perfect (little bit more protection at the top). But I guess it will all stretch a bit since its neoprene.
Can take a picture tomorrow with the Desire in if you want.

Hi,
I have got my One X for about 2 weeks now and there are multiple micro-scrathes on its screen already... (some of them are covering half of the screen). They are only visible when the screen is off and under certain lighting and angle, but it is quite annoying - I am worried how would the screen look like after a couple of months.
I am very careful with the phone and never keep it in my pocket with any other items. I have got HD2 previously for almost 3 years and with the same usage pattern its screen hasn't got a single scratch.
I suspect it is not Gorilla Glass that gets scratched, but some kind of coating (oleophobic?) on the screen.
Is your experience similar?
Dude there something with the screen. Its sh1t. i dropped the phone yesterday from my bed and on the right top of the screen there is a brake on the screen and some scratches too.I had Galaxy S and i dropped it several times and from higher position than bed and non a single scratch i dont mention the ****ing brake.i am already thinking replacing the digitizer .its a fuking new phone its not that i have problem with the broke as long my lcd is working but u know what i mean
was the swearing necessary?
replacing the glass is hard- the screen and lcd are apparently attached and spare parts are expensive, let alone the effort required to disassemble the phone (as the m/board etc are attached directly to the screen)
the screen is also laminated - maybe this coating is getting scratched? i don't know exactly what laminated glass is, just what it achieves.
Its necessary when they say Gorilla Glass should be Gorilla Glass. Its the same screen as galaxy s.Anyway i am afraid removing the digitizer would damage the LCD too by accident and the problem will be larger. so i am not quite ready to do that.i can live with a scratch
Sorry to hear your dramas with the phone.
I have mine now over a month.
I use a flip leather case now, but had none for the first two weeks and I use my phone a lot but with no screen protector and I don't have any scratches on it.
You must have hit something with sharp edges hard.
I had a SG2, never had a screen protector and was exposed as I didn't use a flip case. It never got any major scrathes, but hundreds of tiny ones that could be scene in the right light only.
This is a much better glass in my opinion.
Hope you are able to fix yours without too much trouble.
Cheers.
I too have many minor scratches, it does not hinder its use so I'm alright with it, I was but no longer using the HTC branded flip case that phones4u have me when I upgraded. Offers no protection and is clumsy to answer phone quickly lol.

I have noticed these micro-scratches too (funny I googled HTC One X micro scratches and this page came up). I haven't dropped my phone and I haven't put it in my pocket with anything else. At first I only noticed them in the sun, but now I can see them indoors as well. You have to turn the display off and hold it at an angle to see the scratches, but they are there.
Today i returned mine after 2 weeks it had a scratch in the midle on the screen and it was visible when the screen is off...
I hope they replace it i dont whant to have a scrached phone that costs 700 euro and is suposed to have gorila glass.
And i havent droped it or put it in my pocket with other items.

Are you sure they are scratches? I noticed something similar on my HOX the other day and thought I'd scratched it at first, but the whole screen seems to have that pattern and it's far too regular to be tiny scratches. I think it's part of the screen (digitiser?) as scratches wouldn't look so regular.
Think I have a few on mine now...not gonna get too beet up about it, it's only a phone and will probably be swapping it for something else in six months..... Which will probably get scratched too, lol.

Wow I'm really surprised when I read these posts
My story I had my one x in my pocket no case or screen protector and was in a rush for the bus and just chucked my coins in my pocket not realising it was the same pocket my one x was in and ran for the bus only when I went to get my coins that I realised my phone had been bouncing around with the coins in my pocket like a washing machine while I was running
Subsequently I almost scrapped myself thinking I've commited the ultimate sin I expected to see a crapload of scratches
To my disbelief besides a couple of light scratches on the polycarbonate back that just rubbed off the screen was fine I remember think what?! That can't be right and for the whole bus ride I was furiously examining the screen, holding it on an angle in the light to try and detect even the most minor of scratches and still found nothing ever since then I couldn't stop praising the screen on the one x
The camera lens was also scratch free but I'm thinking that was just sheer luck

Guys I am forced to believe HTC isn't using Gorilla Glass on all models.. I had the Thailand version and it scratched crazy easy. I now have the HTC ONE XL and i can take a key to it..
I have two minor (about 5mm in length) hairline scratches on mine. Inspected my screen at an angle with powerful flashlight just to barely notice them after having read this thread.
I'm not going to be bothered by those, but I am going to do an occasional inspection and if I notice a trend I'll put a screen protector on.
I have some screen protectors for the phone and even applied one, but tore it off immediately because the bare screen is much better to the touch and does not have that stupid rainbow effect the protector had.

Yeah, these are definitively legitimate scrathes, very irregular, there is no pattern.
They seem to get worse and worse every day...
A $2 dollar screen protector would have prevented this. Just saying.

I am tired of reading about problems in HOX. I start to think I have another phone no one x. I have it 1.5 month. I have no problem at all.
I am not using screen protector and case. Just a poutch.
Twice I had drop it from the base of the car and hit the screen in different places. No problem.
Usually I put in my pocket without the poutch. There is no scratch on the screen and polycarbonate.

Hello everyone,
Is it just me or the new M8 have a fragile screen? I've had quite a lot of HTC phone in the past and never had a scratched/broken/cracked screen with any of them (they had invisible shield but it still was very clear). But my M8? A different story. My first one last 1 month before cracking near the middle on the left. I changed it and immediatly (as in remove from the box and install) an invisible shield glass. Now, the protector, 8 weeks old, is cracked at 4 places.
The phone never droped or hit anything and is alone in my pocket, far from anything, like all of my other phone... Is it because it's bigger then the other, thus making it "warp" in my pocket, adding pressure on the screen? I don't know, but I really feel like I'll be forced to by a case with front flap to prevent that, something I really wanted to avoid.

You've invested in this Awesome phone, but you don't want to spend money to protect it? Personally I bought an otterbox. These days one hast to have a protective case, as all the newer phones screens are fragile. I am glad the rep at the T-Mobile store talked me into getting the case. I have a bit more peace of mind now. If you get a case I highly recommend an otter case, I don't think there is a case better than an otter case, then again this is the first time I have bought a case for my phone so I could be wrong.
Hmmm... Haven't had a case since one x, gorilla glass are suppose to be tough and I like the aluminum finish on the phone. M7 didn't had this issue neither. Right now I'm waiting for my invisible glass replacement, but still, this phone never dropped, never bump on something, always rest on his back and still, screen broke. It's super fragile and it shouldn't be like that
Never had this problem at all. I hammer my phones too. I've dropped it numerous times, and it has marks and chips in the aluminium and two very small scratches on the screen.
Nothing at all fragile about this phone or the screen, although you said the screen protector shattered too so it's something you are doing.
I really don't see what I'm doing differently then with all my other phone. It's in my pocket, screen side on my skin so if it bump, it bump the back, always rest on his back, never droped or bumped.... The first one cracked from the middle of the screen (left to the middle), this one, the screen protector cracked from the top middle to the right. Really weird...

Perhaps it's getting twisted from being in the pocket. The phone is quite tall, so when it's in your pocket and you move around, it could put stress on the phone and make it crack. For instance when you sit down and your pants gets stretched out etc. I've broken the volume buttons of another phone by keeping in the pocket while im on a bike, and in time the stress on the buttons caused them to malfuntion.
That's the only explanation i can think of, when you say that you haven't dropped it and it hasn't bumped into anything etc.
Just wondering how everyone's phones is holding up since there aren't any real good protective cases or user drop test videos yet. I haven't dropped my oppo yet but I'm curious to find out who has and how the phone stood up to the fall.
I have for sure had some issues and I am not happy with them. somehow my screen has scratches on it, in 2 or 3 places. In the very top right corner it is starting to look like air bubbles under a screen protector, where the screen glass actually looks like it is coming off. It has fallen once, and bounced, the bottom corner of the bezel is damaged due to the fall. The scratches appeared on my screen weeks before the fall.

I took off the screen protector as it wasn't fitted properly in one of the corners, I have ordered more as the screen is a dust magnet. I have ordered the iFace Mall cases for my phone, it's so annoying having to order accessories from China because no-one in the UK seems to sell them.
I dropped my oppo twice by now.
The first time from about 30cm on tiled flor, and the second time yesterday from about one meter on tiled floor.
At the first fall it falls on the upper left edge, there you can see that the metalframe had prevented more damage.
At the second fall it fall on the display side. Now the "plastic frame" arround the screen prevented damage to the screen.
Ha I managed to drop mine today as well about 3 1/2 feet on to hard concrete and it bounced on 3 corners and the back cover popped off. I just knew once I picked it up that it was done for but the screen was untouched and the metal bumper took allot of the impact. If this would of been my old iphone it would of certainly cracked. Very happy with the durability of this phone.

I just bought oppo find 7 last week because of the good spec they offer but I was dissapointed with it after only 1 week. My oppo have been heating up frequently and sometimes a bit lagging. My phone was very hot on the first day itself while I was just setting up my new phone such as installing app and sync my account. I can feel it even with the casing. And it also a bit laggy when wake up from sleep. When I double tap, the screen will wake up but I need to wait few second before it respond. Sometimes I need to double tap to off and on again a few time only it works. Its sometimes get annoying when you want to access your phone quickly. But this, I still can bare with but what finally drew the last straw is the fragility of the phone. I always put my phone in the small pouch inside my handbag. And yesterday when I come back home, I found out the screen on my phone is crack. I was so shock and try to recall what I did and I remember when I ask my friend to pass me my bag, she did put down my bag on the table a bit harder. And that's the only thing I think can think of that cause the most impact. I was so sad and disappointed with oppo because the screen crack just because of this small impact even though its protected with a casing and a curve hd tempered glass. Its so different from what was advertised with the toughness of their guerilla glass if it can't even withstand this small impact which other phone brand have no problem with it. This experience is making me doubting the quality of oppo phone and its only been a week since I bought it. Now my friend and family also starting to doubt oppo phone since what happen to my phone.
Well a week ago my oppo fall on the road, cracking on the left side, top of it
I use a protective case of transparent plastic, but on the corners, near the screen, doesn`t protect well....:crying:
Finally, some days ago i discover that the cracks, are from my Nilkellin screen protector, and not the Gorilla itself!:laugh:
I order another Nilkellin H9 and im very happy to make the investiment on this, because it seems it really protected my screen!:angel:
cracked and dead
Lets start this out with a disclaimer... I HAVE NEVER HAD A CRACKED SCREEN BEFORE... but I managed to be in a hurry one day at the store getting my son out of his car seat and dropped my phone from waste height onto the concrete... poof, the screen is killed and all touch responsiveness gone.. So, I order a screen off aliexpress, it gets here and I install it.... Two days later I'm on a bike ride up my favorite trail (phone in a padded pocket of a backpack) and I ate hit a rock coming down forcing my balls into my handlebars but overall still staying on the bike. Get to the bottom of the mountain, take phone out to turn off the gps, and there is my nice and new screen cracked again... again with no touch response.
Fast forward like 4 months and I finally calmed down enough to order another screen and try again. Let's see how long this one lasts, lol.... This time I did order a tempered glass screen protector from the get-go, so hopefully that helps.
Hi giznad. You replaced the screen or led the task to a technician? I can't find a video for the Find 7a. It was dificult to do?
Thanks.
