Have a few questions :) - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I might be buying one of these bad boys. And i have a couple of questions.
1. How is the GPS on this device? Does it lock on pretty quick? Also im talking about stock, not with any tweaks or anything added.
2. How about signal? Does it get good signal? Like if T-Mobiles map says it has excelent 3g coverage will i get that inside a building?
3. Hows the camera? I heard it was the best and looking at pics taken from it it looks pretty spectacular. But nothing speaks more then users opinions
EDIT: missed one 4. Under moderate use, texting throughout the day, hows the battery life? Also hows it with heavy use?
Thanks guys for your time!

Battery sucks with any use, GPS locks on pretty quick(15 sec or so)
The camera is great, by far the best I have seen on a cell phone and just as good as our point and shoot.
I always have good signal on T-Mobile

Thanks! I figured battery life wouldnt be too good considering its using the Super Amoled + display. I was planning on buying an extended battery anyhow. About how long does it last? Like from what time do you unplug it till it reaches zero?

I personally believe the battery to be fairly standard, but definitely not horrible. I keep my display brightness at probably 75% and it lasts me ALL day and usually needs charging at around 10. Definitely manageable, and this is heavy to moderate use; ALOT of texting, maybe 30 minutes of gameplay, live wallpaper, wifi on for about half the time, AND this is on AOKP ICS ROM so battery life would be considerably better on a stock ROM or even one that allows under-clocking. Hope this helped!

Honestly I think battery on life on stock is great well at least for me....with modetate to heavy use...that including alot of Web browsing, text, calls....it last me a good solid 12 hrs. best battery life I've had on any smart phone I've owned. This phone is just amazing in every aspect the only phone I think that is better than this is the HTC one X. obviously using GPS and stuff is going to drain it more so it depends on how u use it..

The GPS on this phone has never failed me.
As far as signal. If its good near you then you will be fine. I get 4G in my apartment and do over 20 mbps dl speeds inside.
I think the Camera is better than my wifes Sensation..
I am a moderate to heavy user. I mean Texts, Calls maybe a game lots of web with usually over 2.5 hours of screen on time and on stock I was doing 13 or 14 hours..
Rooted, under clocked, and undervolted I have went over 20 hours.

Thats impressive! 20 hours! Woah! thanks for that i'll def consider making a profile in setCPU or tasker or even make my own apk which will under clock and undervolt when i want it
I have a second question though, what is the difference between the Samsung Galaxy S II (T-Mobile SGH-T989) and the Samsung Galaxy S II X (SGH-T989D)

Would this be considered good?

In your opinion, would this be considered good battery life?
2 days and 12 hours on battery with a total of almost 2 hours of screen on time.

I think it's pretty subjective to be honest.
Are you able to get what you need to do on the phone done without having to worry about the battery?
If you mean in terms of comparison to others, then it is about average. I'd guess you're running a LTE Nexus - with the extra radio, you'll have worse battery life compared to GSM users. Some GSM users have reported 4+ hours of screen on time, which I would assume needs a few of the right tweaks here and there to achieve that. I doubt a LTE Nexus will be hitting those numbers though.
Well a phone like that and using it less than an hour a day for actual use defeats the purpose of having a smartphone.
So it's really impossible to say if it is considered 'good' battery life or not, since 99% of us use it frequently for e-mails, chat, browsing and gaming.

I keep LTE disabled most of the time even though LTE is plentiful in my area. I get 250 kilobytes per second on Verizon's 3G 95% of the time and that's plenty for browsing webpages or streaming music.
Another thing I should mention is that I am on GummyNexus 0.7.0 with LeanKernel 1.7.1 and I wanted to test how long I could make the phone last, with light to very moderate usage while on Wi-Fi. Brightness was at 50%.
I have made it to 3 hours and 50 minutes of screen-on time before when I had brightness at 25% with LTE disabled and connected to 3G.
I am aware that LTE drains battery, and the only reason I'd need to use it is if I wanted to download a large file. I get anywhere between 10-to-20mbps download and 8-to-10mbps upload, which is faster than my aunt's AT&T HSPA+ connection. She has trouble hitting 6mbps download and 2mbps upload.

REALISTIC battery life ???

I was just curious what you guys and gals were actually seeing from your batteries?
I have an LTE GNex that is rooted with APex ROM and Franco Kernel.
Everything i read is about all this fantastic battery life... im just not experiencing that. I did purchase francos app to keep the kernel updated and to support him. I am also running Antutu Battery Saver on Level 3. My phone will lose 10% an hour just replying to a few texts and sitting idle in my pocket. If i watch a few youtube videos or listen to some music itll drain quickly. Has any one experienced similar?
CPUspy shows that the phone spends most of its time in deep sleep... what is going on?
From the looks of your screenshot, it shows you have low signal. The phone could be dying faster trying to hold onto extra signal if you spend most of your time where the screenshot was taken

first thing i would do is get rid of that battery saver u dont need it and make sure ur on a current radio , mine and a few others battery posts are on frankos kernel thread page 747 . the first 20% OF my battery from full charge always drops fast than after that slows down . hope helps u
wow, thanks for the quick replies!
I thought maybe it could be struggling with a signal.. this house is the dang bermuda triangle of cell service... however with the same 2 bars of LTE im still getting decent speeds....
I am on the 4.0.2 radios only other ones i saw were the leaked 4.0.4 and from what i have read about them, they are iffy...
Thanks so much for posting a page number!!!!!!! i was getting worn out reading and finding nothing on his kernel page!!
I will ditch the battery app and see what happens with that...
I am also losing my OC... is this the fault of the kernel and the rom fighting to own the permission to OC ??? ill set it and check it a while later and ill be back to 1000mhz...
thanks again for the replies
much appreciated,
j
LTE will usually give you good speeds even with one bar. The problem is when the radio senses a weak signal the phone pushed more power to the radio in an attempt to catch and hold onto that signal

oohhhh that makes more sense then. so it could still be this dang house! lol
i will be in BFE west texas next week without a hint of LTE... ill put phone on CDMA and i bet my battery goes a full day then...
the Kernel Page only had 245 pages ... i didnt find the battery stuff... ill keep after it and see what i can come us with...

i have a gsm gnex and my house is also a very low signal area, 2 bars or 100 dBm is very good and the phone is constantly switching from edge to 3g but even with all this i still get excellent battery life. try switching radios like other said, certain radio are better at switching from 2g to 3g or LTE. im also using apex with the apex kernal. its the best one in terms of battery life, very simple and minimal but works great. there wasnt anything causing wakelocks.
did you check if you have any apps or process interrupting the phones sleep? 10% an hour seems more than just a radio problem but i could be wrong since LTE does use more power. try downloading better battery stats, its free, and will tell you what process or apps are waking your phone.
I would turn off lte and sync when not needed ...try stock rom and see how the battery life is...use it for few days then install a custom rom if needed
OK, So i downloaded better battery stats and found that i had a process that was really doing a number on me it was... "mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser" I did some research on it and found that it had to do with dolphin browser. I removed the browser, the bookmarks to SD, and the faster load... the process then went away and the battery percentages appeared to be more normal.
However im still losing battery really quickly. I unchecked some synced things that i dont use, browser, calendar, photos, music and wallet... hopefully this all helps.
I was sad to lose dolphin but i found Chrome instead... very very nice!!
I will watch the processes... i did not see anything that was waking the phone..
Thanks again!

Im concerned..Please Help

Hey guys...im thinking of buying this awesome phone but there is one concern which is the battery life of this phone, i have searched many places, read many reviews, all were mixed. So i decided to open a thread here and ask the actual users of this phone about the battery.
please report how many hours you get wth a single charge and what activities you perform..
im not a very heavy user, but use my wifi from time to time, dont use 3g at ALL, one hour of games. mostly browsing stuff, checking mails, twitter, gplus, news and all.
sorry for making a new thread for this
Thanks in advance
You can't measure battery like that, each user has a unique way of using their phone.
With the usage you describe it will last you until you're back at a charger, at least 12 hrs with 2-3 hrs screen time.
I would consider myself a heavy user. I watch about an hour of video every day via YouTube and have wifi and data always enabled. I do have to say I run a custom rom and kernel and that has significantly improved battery life since I bought it. I usually finish a days use with about 20-40% before charging again. It's hard to say since everyone uses their phones very differently, but compared to other android phones I have owned this is by no means a battery whore (any more).

Battery life for me is worse than any Android device I've ever owned (see my signature), by far, even with the same amount of usage.
Best ever was my UV/UC Nexus One. I miss that metallic masterpiece.

i know we cant measure the battery life like that, and its not my first android devices, i have used htc wildfire, and gakaxy i9003.
i was asking compared to others is the battery satisfying ?
You're looking at 3-4 hours of screen on time per day on average.
I've had it last for almost 3 days (very minimal use) or 6 hours (very heavy use, 5hrs 16mins screen on time)
Depends how you use it.
And to ryjabo, the battery life in this is better than the nexus s. Definitely.
The GSM version gets very good battery, especially if you are not a heavy user. The Verizon sprint version gets bad battery. I go 8 hours and have 70% left with 1 hour display time. This phone idles very very well. On wifi all day is even better.

Well for starters I have a gsm phone, not lte and I'm sure that helps a lot with battery. Apart from that I'm on cm9s latest build with Francos latest nightly.

I have the Google Play GSM version, rooted but with no special power tweaks. Yesterday I didn't use it very heavily (< 1 hour screen on), and last night I had 82% remaining after 16.5 hours. That was with wi-fi on all day. It definitely seems like the screen is the most power-hungry component, and it typically accounts for about 50% of my battery usage.

You should expect mixed reviews for this phone. This phone targets developers. Developers know all the intricates of a device and benchmark it against other hardware.
The Gnex is on par with the Photon 4G and has a better battery life than the EPIC 4G. (for me). I stick to stock roms and only change the kernel.

Yeah the fact that you're even connected to 4g all day is probably why your battery life sucks. I always stay on 3g when im not on WiFi unless i need to download something or do some browsing or what not.

Poor Battery Life

Hi All,
My Gnex 9250 has a poor battery life, My brother has the same phone and his battery last much longer(with 3g) than mine. Please help.
1130 AM - Battery 100%
1 and half hour Music(Player Pro) - Not much screen activity(with 2G enabled)
2G on for 6 hours, Pretty long texting.
about 45 Minutes of Browsing(2g)
10 Mins on Voice calls.
No Widgets.Background apps = Swiftkey,Go launcher(No theme),Profile scheduler.
By 12am battery was 20%
Screen brigntness is VERY low so its not that, Its about 20%.
Phone is about a month old.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT - 4.1.1(No available updates)
The fact your battery goes over 12hrs seems it's not too bad with moderate use. And who knows if your bro uses his as much as he says? If you want to compare then look at his battery stats in settings next to yours.
Try a different ROM? Kernel?

Thanks for your reply. My brother does use as he said, Ive seen his battery stats, uptime was 1 day 9 hours(14% then). He doesnt text half as much as I do, but his voice calls are much more than mine. Also hes on 3g thats a bigger battery hog than 2g. Not too keen on changing the Kernel/Rom.
Could it be SwiftKey and Go launcher? He doesnt use either of them.

there are lots of thing that can affect your battery life one of it is the kernel ur using.
I already have this problem before.
i've tried lots of custom rom. the only custom rom that solve this battery issues is from Android Revolution HD 7.0.0
from this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361348
imo the best battery/performance kernel out there is franco's. try it, battery will be 2x to 3x longer.
if you like to fool around with what's chewing battery you can get better battery stats and it will tell you what keeps your phone from going to sleep. sometimes nothing, sometimes crappy app that messes things up
good luck!
Thanks to all for your replies.
Guess that 12 hours is not bad afterall right? Seems like that from the first reply I got.
Unfortunatly I have no time to re-flash a differnt ROM/Kernel. But thanks for all reccomendations.

You say that your brother doesn't text as much as you but he uses voice calls more. Remember that when you're texting the screen is on and that has a big impact on battery life.
There's not a kernel, ROM, or flying saucer out there that can triple battery life Just saying. People get fanatical about certain ROM/kernel combos. The usual suspects are leaving on things you don't need and on occasion an app. People claim that different things work better on different phones but I think it's a bunch of crap. Much of what you hear is placebo.

[Q] What are you currently doing to increase battery life?

We all know our GS2 runs out of Battery at a faster rate than what we would like! I'm just curious, what steps do You take to increase battery life, if any.
-Do you use certain apps?
-Do you enable/disable certain things and certain times?
-Anything, ever the smallest things you do, I would like to know!
I'm just curious to see what different people do to strengthen their battery.

Battery Life
Im running FK23 leaked rooted with stock kernel. I use powersave mode that comes in stock settings app.
I don't limit cpu. I use phone to txt, play games, youtube, facebook, twitter, and instagram and google play store.
I get around 14+ hours usage.
Also, I try to use WIFI whenever I can. I turn off GPS when not needed. I dont use 4G often as 3G is pretty good on FK23.
Lasts me from 7:45AM to 10:27PM as of now on 1%.
Wow, and how much do you use you're phone throughout the day? I'm just looking for new ideas because I do several things to increase my battery length, but I find myself around 50% in the first 2-3 hours of my 11 hour day. :/

I bought a cheap ($10) extended battery and cover, and a cheap ($9) TPU case/ At 14 hours, I still had 61% battery left. I can get a full legitimate day out of it running 2.3's, but I am going to try JB and ICS again and see where it's at.
I run KingKang with the JB tweaks package. I also modified my build.prop for both performance and battery life. Plus I toggle my 3G on only when I need it. If I have a WiFi signal I'll do the same with that. I average 17 hours but sometimes I get more than 24. Inverted apps not only look great, but help with battery too.

I did the same as you until the fk23 leak came out. Calkulin's v3.0 gb is amazing for battery life, smoothness, and functionality. I was never fully satisfied with any of the ics solutions, stock or custom.
Although the fk23 battery life isnt as good as calkulin, I'm still using it as my daily driver bc it's jellybean and cool, the phone runs well and smooth, and battery is good enough for me.
To answer the op's question, I do the following to help extend my battery life:
1. Leave off all data unless I need to use it (3g, 4g, wifi).
2. Turn of autosync and only sync as needed.
3. Remove bloatware and/or freeze any unnecessary apps (use GSM battery and OS monitor to find battery hog apps).
4. Leave off GPS unless needed.
5. Set screen brightness lower.
Here's a link to my FK23 results over in the battery thread in General:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34924972&postcount=534
I've only owned this phone since after the ICS update, so never tried any GB ROM.
The ICS ROM I've had the most success with is Re-Calked, but FK23 takes it just a step further for me. I know some people have been reporting issues with FK23, but for me it has been rock solid and has been my DD for nearly a week now.
Blu Kuban also did well with battery life, but it is a little over-customized for my liking. I also had some stability issues with BK. I used sleshpics M'ICS build for a while too ... again, over customized for my liking. Good performance and relatively stable. Also, I have never been able to get 4G speeds on any other ROM/kernel like I'm seeing now.
If I'm in an area with a strong cellular signal, I can get over 24h with 3h+ screen time both on and off WiFi. If the cell signal is week, I burn from 5-7%/h so maybe 15-16h if I was there all day ... but that would obv. improve if I threw it into airplane mode.
I have frozen all of the bloatware apps, don't have Google Now activated. Other than that, I allow syncing to occur per default. I don't have FB app installed.
I use auto-brightness most of the time, and I have a dark wallpaper.
dim screen. stay on wifi. that is all.
Honestly, getting use to a dimmed screen made a HUGE difference!!
Is there ever a time when its better to not be on WiFi, of a WiFi is available?

Wow, and how much do you use you're phone throughout the day? I'm just looking for new ideas because I do several things to increase my battery length, but I find myself around 50% in the first 2-3 hours of my 11 hour day. :/
