Im concerned..Please Help - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys...im thinking of buying this awesome phone but there is one concern which is the battery life of this phone, i have searched many places, read many reviews, all were mixed. So i decided to open a thread here and ask the actual users of this phone about the battery.
please report how many hours you get wth a single charge and what activities you perform..
im not a very heavy user, but use my wifi from time to time, dont use 3g at ALL, one hour of games. mostly browsing stuff, checking mails, twitter, gplus, news and all.
sorry for making a new thread for this
Thanks in advance

You can't measure battery like that, each user has a unique way of using their phone.
With the usage you describe it will last you until you're back at a charger, at least 12 hrs with 2-3 hrs screen time.

I would consider myself a heavy user. I watch about an hour of video every day via YouTube and have wifi and data always enabled. I do have to say I run a custom rom and kernel and that has significantly improved battery life since I bought it. I usually finish a days use with about 20-40% before charging again. It's hard to say since everyone uses their phones very differently, but compared to other android phones I have owned this is by no means a battery whore (any more).
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus

Battery life for me is worse than any Android device I've ever owned (see my signature), by far, even with the same amount of usage.
Best ever was my UV/UC Nexus One. I miss that metallic masterpiece.

What are you using. Iv installed a few roms and kernels and my battery is still horrible. With little use too! Im in school all day where I get a perfect 4g signal. Yet the phone still drains battery.

i know we cant measure the battery life like that, and its not my first android devices, i have used htc wildfire, and gakaxy i9003.
i was asking compared to others is the battery satisfying ?

You're looking at 3-4 hours of screen on time per day on average.
I've had it last for almost 3 days (very minimal use) or 6 hours (very heavy use, 5hrs 16mins screen on time)
Depends how you use it.
And to ryjabo, the battery life in this is better than the nexus s. Definitely.

The GSM version gets very good battery, especially if you are not a heavy user. The Verizon sprint version gets bad battery. I go 8 hours and have 70% left with 1 hour display time. This phone idles very very well. On wifi all day is even better.

Well for starters I have a gsm phone, not lte and I'm sure that helps a lot with battery. Apart from that I'm on cm9s latest build with Francos latest nightly.

I have the Google Play GSM version, rooted but with no special power tweaks. Yesterday I didn't use it very heavily (< 1 hour screen on), and last night I had 82% remaining after 16.5 hours. That was with wi-fi on all day. It definitely seems like the screen is the most power-hungry component, and it typically accounts for about 50% of my battery usage.

You should expect mixed reviews for this phone. This phone targets developers. Developers know all the intricates of a device and benchmark it against other hardware.
The Gnex is on par with the Photon 4G and has a better battery life than the EPIC 4G. (for me). I stick to stock roms and only change the kernel.

Yeah the fact that you're even connected to 4g all day is probably why your battery life sucks. I always stay on 3g when im not on WiFi unless i need to download something or do some browsing or what not.

Would this be considered good?

In your opinion, would this be considered good battery life?
2 days and 12 hours on battery with a total of almost 2 hours of screen on time.

I think it's pretty subjective to be honest.
Are you able to get what you need to do on the phone done without having to worry about the battery?
If you mean in terms of comparison to others, then it is about average. I'd guess you're running a LTE Nexus - with the extra radio, you'll have worse battery life compared to GSM users. Some GSM users have reported 4+ hours of screen on time, which I would assume needs a few of the right tweaks here and there to achieve that. I doubt a LTE Nexus will be hitting those numbers though.
Well a phone like that and using it less than an hour a day for actual use defeats the purpose of having a smartphone.
So it's really impossible to say if it is considered 'good' battery life or not, since 99% of us use it frequently for e-mails, chat, browsing and gaming.

I keep LTE disabled most of the time even though LTE is plentiful in my area. I get 250 kilobytes per second on Verizon's 3G 95% of the time and that's plenty for browsing webpages or streaming music.
Another thing I should mention is that I am on GummyNexus 0.7.0 with LeanKernel 1.7.1 and I wanted to test how long I could make the phone last, with light to very moderate usage while on Wi-Fi. Brightness was at 50%.
I have made it to 3 hours and 50 minutes of screen-on time before when I had brightness at 25% with LTE disabled and connected to 3G.
I am aware that LTE drains battery, and the only reason I'd need to use it is if I wanted to download a large file. I get anywhere between 10-to-20mbps download and 8-to-10mbps upload, which is faster than my aunt's AT&T HSPA+ connection. She has trouble hitting 6mbps download and 2mbps upload.

did you get all the use out of it you wanted in a days time without having to charge it? if so, then you're good to go.

Have a few questions :)

I might be buying one of these bad boys. And i have a couple of questions.
1. How is the GPS on this device? Does it lock on pretty quick? Also im talking about stock, not with any tweaks or anything added.
2. How about signal? Does it get good signal? Like if T-Mobiles map says it has excelent 3g coverage will i get that inside a building?
3. Hows the camera? I heard it was the best and looking at pics taken from it it looks pretty spectacular. But nothing speaks more then users opinions
EDIT: missed one 4. Under moderate use, texting throughout the day, hows the battery life? Also hows it with heavy use?
Thanks guys for your time!
Battery sucks with any use, GPS locks on pretty quick(15 sec or so)
The camera is great, by far the best I have seen on a cell phone and just as good as our point and shoot.
I always have good signal on T-Mobile

Thanks! I figured battery life wouldnt be too good considering its using the Super Amoled + display. I was planning on buying an extended battery anyhow. About how long does it last? Like from what time do you unplug it till it reaches zero?
I personally believe the battery to be fairly standard, but definitely not horrible. I keep my display brightness at probably 75% and it lasts me ALL day and usually needs charging at around 10. Definitely manageable, and this is heavy to moderate use; ALOT of texting, maybe 30 minutes of gameplay, live wallpaper, wifi on for about half the time, AND this is on AOKP ICS ROM so battery life would be considerably better on a stock ROM or even one that allows under-clocking. Hope this helped!
Honestly I think battery on life on stock is great well at least for me....with modetate to heavy use...that including alot of Web browsing, text, calls....it last me a good solid 12 hrs. best battery life I've had on any smart phone I've owned. This phone is just amazing in every aspect the only phone I think that is better than this is the HTC one X. obviously using GPS and stuff is going to drain it more so it depends on how u use it..

The GPS on this phone has never failed me.
As far as signal. If its good near you then you will be fine. I get 4G in my apartment and do over 20 mbps dl speeds inside.
I think the Camera is better than my wifes Sensation..
I am a moderate to heavy user. I mean Texts, Calls maybe a game lots of web with usually over 2.5 hours of screen on time and on stock I was doing 13 or 14 hours..
Rooted, under clocked, and undervolted I have went over 20 hours.

I have a second question though, what is the difference between the Samsung Galaxy S II (T-Mobile SGH-T989) and the Samsung Galaxy S II X (SGH-T989D)

ics and battery life

At first my girlfriend had her Nexus S updated to ics and immediately we noticed a huge difference in how long her battery lasted and she is the furthest thing from a heavy user.
So when I heard that ics ws being released for our phone my first thought was i hope that what she experienced won't be what i do as we have a better phone right?
Well I am sad to say on a stock but rooted rom I experience the same lack of battery life as her.
Now I am no beginner to Android and have changed all sorts of settings available and nothing syncs on its own and when I unplug my phone from charging in the morning I will need to plug my phone in at night before bed as my phone will be completely dead.
I have to say I am very disappointed in the battery life of thr the stock rom and hope some good kernels make it out to help.

Have you tried to find out which app/process is draining your battery? Better Battery Stats can help you identify what is using up your battery.
I had a big keep awake problem when i first installed stock ICS on my T989D. I did a full wipe of the phone and formatted my internal SD card (after backing things up of course), reinstall the same stock ICS and everything works great now. Battery life is about the same as before (stock GB w/ Synergy kernel), which is about 30 hours with moderate use.
Try CM 9. I get almost 2 days of battery life.

Though I am now on AOKP, I had great battery life on stock ICS as well. But, everything is subjective. How many email accounts are being synced? Do you have Facebook / Twitter / G+ updating every hour? Do you have news feeds continuously updating as well?
I have to agree with the poster above. Get Better Battery Stats and find the culprit draining your battery and work from there.
biggest thing draining the battery is the screen.
you can literally watch the battery usage drop 10-15% in a period of 10 to 15 minutes which is absurd when its set to low.

Wait for kernel development. Its underway as we speak. It will make a significant difference.
Some battery saving tips:
- use juicedefender and set it to aggressive mode.
- use romtoolbox or other programs to underclock cpu frequency.
- also try using telus stock ics. Very good battery life.

I have a brand new T989D (I'm new to Android, former iPhone user) and got the ICS upgrade the day I got it (9 days ago). Battery life is terrible, I'm lucky if I get 10 hours of moderate usage. The phone also tends to run very, very hot. Sometimes apps freeze and all I can do is either wait or, in some cases, remove the battery to reboot.
I'm open to any tips that will get this fixed! I haven't rooted yet (no time). I think I will try those wipe tools and reflash the stock ICS ROM.
First post btw - glad to have joined XDA!

Stock, not rooted, my battery life is great. Something is using your battery up, and flashing some exotic kernel isn't going to change that. The stock kernel works fine. You'll want to find the root of the problem. Keep a real-time (or 1-5s interval anyway) eye on the phone's current (mA) usage, and when it's high for no apparent reason, you'll know that whatever is sucking your battery is doing it right then. That should help you characterize the problem. I've noticed when my WCDMA/GSM radio signal sucks, so does the battery life, so I either turn off the radio or switch to GSM only when I'm in that area. If your display is what's eating your battery, well a kernel can't stop that. Turn the brightness down, leave it on auto-brightness, or just deal with it if you need the display on all the time. But if tweaking and modding makes you happy, by all means...

I have the same complaint. The "screen" battery usage is just unacceptable, especially compared to GB. My phone has been draining from a full charge for ~4.5 hours and my screen usage is 70% and battery is down to 65% with hardly 10 minutes of screen-on time.
I use an app called autostarts and you basically enable/disable apps that start running when certain events happen (phone startup, wifi being turned on, incoming call/sms/mms, other apps turning on, etc.). Just make sure you do your homework so you dont disable something critical. Hopefully this app works on ICS. You'll be surprised what different events make certain apps turn on automaticly. Screen, data/wifi, gps and bluetooth are the biggest battery drainers. No matter what Rom you are on if you don't keep control of those items your battery will drain fast. Keep ur screen on auto, let it go off @ 15 seconds ( you have to be pretty used to your phone for that setting not to annoy you), turn OFF your data or wifi when not in use. With bluetooth and gps...well u know that when you use them your battery is gonna drain faster than normal...just keep that in mind. Its all pretty much common sense.
I'm not going to tell you how much battery time I get cuz its nonsense. There are times my phone lasts till the next day and others Im charging it by sundown. Then again Im still on Juggs n Darkside kernel and Im gonna wait a bit still b4 I make the switch. Also don't go by what other people say on battery life cuz if you might not get the same results on that ROM. Everyone of our devices is unique and acts different. Everyone user uses their phone different. You can't define "light, moderate, heavy" use so don't go by that either.

After upgrading to ICS stock unrooted battery life sucked (5-6hrs). I did the whole remove battery, factory reset and still sucked.
Broke down rooted (still stock), downloaded batterycalibration from play, followed the instructions. Easily get over 24hrs before having to charge again. and when I say easily, I mean I still have over 25% left.

Bingo. Vastly different battery life between ROM's is generally BS. Every once in a great while one of these threads has merit but typically someone saying ROM X had "Killer" battery life is clueless and drinking the koolaid. Then a placebo effect takes place. And definitely someones "Heavy" use is subjective. If someone says they get a day out of an android phone they are not heavy users by my definition. It doesn't happen with heavy use. Perhaps the Razr Maxx or another phone with a very large battery but I've had 5 Android phones. If I get past noon it's because I am not using my phone that much and forget about a full day. It's never happened in the 4 years I've used google OS phones. Never.

Huge battery life issues ]VZW] GNex

I have my Galaxy Nexus and I have noticed the battery has just been complete crap lately. Today for example my phone was at 50% and after a 2.5 hour long movie, my battery was down to 19%, and within 10 minutes from that I was down to 14%.
I can easily kill 40% of my battery in one hour driving to work by streaming pandora. I have tried:
CM10, Stock Roms, AOK
Different Bootloaders
Newest radios, older radios, hybrid mixture of radios
Different kernels with hotplug CPU (LeanKernel, FauxKernel)
I might as well walk around with a car battery in my back pocket. I have tried turning off LTE and its better but damn 3G is slow. The thing that pisses me off the most is my Wife's Droid RAZR (not MAXX) has a 1780mAh battery running an OMAP 4430 cpu at the same speed and running LTE all day and she gets a day of use almost out of her device.

My Nexus S was a great phone with great battery, and hell even my HTC Sensation was a great phone but I felt weird with roms that were not true AOSP because of kernel sources having to be patched for newer versions of roms. So I switched and got a GNex when it came out.
So the new Google Nexus Experience is walk around with a charger in your ass, its sad that Google honestly let this device out like this, When and you can look at the S3 or One S/X and that Snapdragon S4 dual core is much better on battery then this OMAP

Im about to just fess up and switch to AT&T, at least if you disable LTE you still have great speeds on HSDPA+ to stream pandora and surf the internet. I really only need LTE for Netflix, its even worse when your device uses more power than you are able to provide it while charging.
Turn LTE one and Stream Netflix while on a good car charger, it will just slow your battery drain, im about to drop the money on the 2100mAH battery on Amazon, the one that comes with the replacement door that makes the phone just slightly thicker. Anyone have battery recommendations

Issue with switching to AT&T is losing your Galaxy Nexus if you want LTE. AT&T's HSPA+ is plenty fast enough for Netflix honestly. Much faster than Verizon's 3G.
But thats up to you. Battery life on the LTE Galaxy Nexus just isn't that good.

I rather not drop the huge money on another phone right now. Think I am going to go with This Samsung 2100mAH battery for now and see if we get a new Nexus Product this year. If not that new RAZR MAXX HD is looking quite nice
There must be something else going on. What is your per hour standby drainage like? I'm on vzw and have the 2100mah batt. But Pandora consumes bout 6~8% an hour if I don't wake the device up to much checking emails and such. My idle sleep drain is about 1% an hour with gmail sync on. I don't have any other apps i.e. Twatter, Face****, G+ and so on. My last 11 hours in the caps.
good day.
I used to get great battery but not recently. I don't load my phone down with anything crazy because it is a work phone. I disable 4G and have WiFi always on. A typical day at work:
8am off charger
push exchange, gmail, twitter and Facebook widgets.
Before I used a Winner00 kang. At 1:30pm, I would normally have about 75% left.
Seems with JB I'm lucky to have 30% and 45minutes screen on time.
Its bad. I've changed kernels, ROMs, super wiped, radios. Nothing seems to fix it. I'm wondering if its Google Now or some app update. I've done battery monitoring stats and I'm getting deep sleeps and nothing unusual.
I have VZW 2100mah battery BTW.

Yeah I've been getting worse battery life...another thing you can look at is how good the signal is wherever you are. The weaker the signal, the more juice it uses. I realized this once I started attending a university.
I've started to bring my charger wherever I go now.
The CDMA Gnex are notorious for having terrible battery life. I personally can barely get a full days worth of juice from the stock battery, so the 2100 could probably get you by the day without much battery anxiety. But YMMV; I also don't use BookFace cuz I'm too cool for such silliness
I do use Google Now and its nice, though its not as helpful as Google made it sound, though being able to access it for other things like phone commands or searching is nice.
I have Exchange Sync for work, Two IMAP email accounts that are on Push via K9 Mail. Play store set to auto update.
I have a total of 42 apps on my phone, most of which are the default apps like calendar, people, etc. I will be trying out a new rom later today once I get my phone charged back to 100% and now that I think about it, battery has gotten worse after JellyBean.

Hi All,
My Gnex 9250 has a poor battery life, My brother has the same phone and his battery last much longer(with 3g) than mine. Please help.
1130 AM - Battery 100%
1 and half hour Music(Player Pro) - Not much screen activity(with 2G enabled)
2G on for 6 hours, Pretty long texting.
about 45 Minutes of Browsing(2g)
10 Mins on Voice calls.
No Widgets.Background apps = Swiftkey,Go launcher(No theme),Profile scheduler.
By 12am battery was 20%
Screen brigntness is VERY low so its not that, Its about 20%.
Phone is about a month old.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT - 4.1.1(No available updates)
The fact your battery goes over 12hrs seems it's not too bad with moderate use. And who knows if your bro uses his as much as he says? If you want to compare then look at his battery stats in settings next to yours.
Try a different ROM? Kernel?

Thanks for your reply. My brother does use as he said, Ive seen his battery stats, uptime was 1 day 9 hours(14% then). He doesnt text half as much as I do, but his voice calls are much more than mine. Also hes on 3g thats a bigger battery hog than 2g. Not too keen on changing the Kernel/Rom.
Could it be SwiftKey and Go launcher? He doesnt use either of them.
Thanks again.

there are lots of thing that can affect your battery life one of it is the kernel ur using.
I already have this problem before.
i've tried lots of custom rom. the only custom rom that solve this battery issues is from Android Revolution HD 7.0.0
from this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361348
imo the best battery/performance kernel out there is franco's. try it, battery will be 2x to 3x longer.
if you like to fool around with what's chewing battery you can get better battery stats and it will tell you what keeps your phone from going to sleep. sometimes nothing, sometimes crappy app that messes things up
good luck!
Thanks to all for your replies.
Guess that 12 hours is not bad afterall right? Seems like that from the first reply I got.
Unfortunatly I have no time to re-flash a differnt ROM/Kernel. But thanks for all reccomendations.

You say that your brother doesn't text as much as you but he uses voice calls more. Remember that when you're texting the screen is on and that has a big impact on battery life.
There's not a kernel, ROM, or flying saucer out there that can triple battery life Just saying. People get fanatical about certain ROM/kernel combos. The usual suspects are leaving on things you don't need and on occasion an app. People claim that different things work better on different phones but I think it's a bunch of crap. Much of what you hear is placebo.
